    Todays corporate environment is

    changing rapidly. Many enterprises

focus on providing employees with a

    flexible workspace that provides

    ubiquitous access to corporate

    resources and services through any

    device and from any location

WHAT IS A 21ST CENTURY OFFICE

The 21st century office is focused on using

and maximizing diversity to accomplish both

individual and organizational goals. It provides the

opportunity for a unifying for organizational goals.

This will require organizations to invest time, effort,

energy, and commitment that can result in

    significant long term advantages.

THE NATURE OF 21ST CENTURY OFFICE

The nature of work has changed fundamentally

and forever and it continues to evolve rapidly.

Geographic distance and borders are increasingly

    irrelevant and transparent.

Mobility has enabled workforces to move closer

to the customer, and with information and processes

now being intangible (ie. electronic), staff are starting

to find better places to work than the office.

    GLOBALIZATION

Driven by national and international deregulation, and by the

communications revolution. Competition is increasingly global. By 2020 Brazil,

Russia, India and China (BRIC countries) will be dominant centers of economic

influence. Global talent pools and virtual teams will be the norm (cost and skill

shortage gaps). Multicultural workforce and diverse teams are working together

worldwide. According to Elance.com (a site that connects employers with free

agents) there is a shortage of .NET developers in the U.S. To combat this and

other skills shortages, this work is being done throughout the world today.

    CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)

Global citizenship and leadership skills are

    being acquired through philanthropic initiatives.

Corporate philanthropy is on the rise.

Organizations such as IBM, E&Y and Pfizer are

developing global leaders by sending to developing

countries. Also, agile working goals reduce

    congestion & emissions.

    THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY

Shift to a post-industrial economy (Kelly,

2006). A knowledge economy is one where the key

asset is knowledge (Houghton, 2000). In an

agricultural economy land is the key resource. In

an industrial economy natural resources, such as

coal and iron ore, and labor are the main resources.

A knowledge economy is one in which knowledge

    is the key resource.

    SKILLS SHORTAGE

Shortfall of 1.5M graduates in 2020, possessing skills

required for a Knowledge Economy. The biggest impact

will be in the quality and quantity of science, technology,

engineering and math (STEM) graduates required. STEM

jobs are predicted to outpace more traditional jobs in both

numbers and salary levels over the next decade.

We are entering a new era of unparalleled talent scarcity, which will put a brake on economic growth around the world, and fundamentally change the

way we approach workforce challenges. Global Talent Risk

    SHIFTING WORKFORCE DEMOGRAPHICS

Compared with the labor force of the past decades,

tomorrows labor force will be older, more racially and ethnically

diverse, and composed of more women. Life expectancy will

continue to rise. The World Health Organization predicts that if a

male is 60 years old and healthy he can continue to work in a full

time job until the age of 74 and a female can continue until the

    age of 77 years old.

    EMPLOYMENT TO DEPLOYMENT

Growth in newer forms of employment arrangements,

with the contingent/free agent workforce projected to include

1 in every 2 workers in the next decade. Organizations will

need to broaden their thinking and apply innovative

approaches to attract the talent they need. One of the talent

pools that organizations will need to tap more effectively is

the growing pool of virtual talent labeled contingent.

    TAKE CHARGE

Plan in advance how you will respond to the changed workplace environment, or, if you are furloughed or laid off, what steps you will take to manage your job-search, your finances, and your home life. Write your ideas down. Prioritize the most important steps. For example, when will you update your resume, when will you make contacts to further your job hunt, when will you begin looking at other job-hunt resources such as the classified ads. How will you manage the stress and anxiety that can be expected?

    TALK

When change does occur, feelings may be both positive and negative, and often both at the same time. These are normal responses, to be expected. Identify one or two or a few people in whom you can confide about the personal impacts of the changes. It is often a relief to hear that others have similar concerns, and you may gain useful information from others ideas of how to handle the situation. Dont allow yourself to be isolated with your concerns. However, dont limit your conversations to people who are feeling enraged or despairing about the situation; try to seek out people who have a sense of hope and some good ideas about managing the situation.

    MAINTAIN A REALISTIC OUTLOOK

Unrealistic expectations can be a tremendous source of

stress and unnecessary suffering. Unfortunately, when organizations

undergo downsizing, restructuring, or other major change, a whole

host of unspoken, and sometimes unrealistic, expectations can arise.

Upper management may expect, for example, that increased

productivity will occur, even though the workforce has been

seriously reduced. Employees, on the other hand, may expect

management to be able to solve problems for which there are no

ready solutions. Remind yourself that some problems can be solved

with direct action, and some require passage of time and ongoing

analysis before meaningful steps can be taken.

    IMPROVE LINES OF COMMUNICATION

Clear communication is of greatest importance during times of upheaval. Dont get into rumor-based discussions, and dont share unsubstantiated information. In seeking information, be specific: what is known about ___ at this time? When can we expect to know more? Are there options, or is there only one way? If there are options, what are they? Do they apply to me, or only to some categories of employees? If you are an information provider, be specific: acknowledge what you know, and equally important, acknowledge what you dont know. Offer specific target dates for updates, and even if there is no new information, update people at that time. People would rather hear that there is no new information, than wonder why you havent been in touch.

    USE AND DEVELOP COPING SKILLS

The body and mind respond to unwanted changes in a number of ways, including the release of stress-related hormones that can disrupt sleep and appetite. You may find yourself irritable, sad, resentful, and feeling disorganized or overwhelmed. The best ways of caring for yourself, so that your energy for coping with the situation can be as great as possible, and your mind at its clearest, include the following:

    a. Exercise, even just a little

    b. Maintain a schedule

    c. Relax your body

    d. Calm Your Mind

    e. Use Distraction

    f. Use Additional Resources as Needed

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR

    ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS

We can somehow consider administrative professionals

as the voice and face of a company to visitors and

customers, thus career opportunities for them are highly in-

demand. In todays downsized and restructured businesses,

everyone is called upon to do more. Administrative

professionals have gladly accepted their share of increased

responsibility. Job descriptions are expanding and new titles

are being created, such as administrative coordinator, office

    administrator, administrative specialist and information

manager, to name just a few.

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR

    ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS

Administrative assistants have moved into training,

supervision, desktop publishing, information management and

research. They are involved with equipment purchase and

maintenance, customer service, project management, public relations

    and supervision of outside vendors.

According to research by the International Association of

    Administrative Professionals (IAAP), most administrative

professionals want to remain in their field and advance into higher

support positions or become office managers. Many say they are

finally receiving recognition for what they do. They are becoming

    members of the management team.

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR

    ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS

With businesses operating in a global economy,

administrative professionals will have opportunities to interact via

e-mail, audio- and video-conferencing, and even face-to-face with

customers and associates from around the world.

The winners will be those professionals who master

technology, effectively use their interpersonal and communication

skills, have the ability to track and organize and be creative in

solving problems, and most importantly, have the willingness to

learn and grow, and accept challenges. For these administrative

professionals, there is a world of opportunity waiting for them!
