Greetings,

On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife Karen and I welcome you to the 39th annual

Ault Park Concours d’Elegance, one of the longest-running automotive celebra-

tions of its kind in the country. Ohio is proud to host this internationally-recognized

event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles

and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show honors the rare and unique cars of

that iconic Italian marque, Ferrari, as well as highlighting special classes of BMW

cars and motorcycles, Ford GT40 racecars, Donald Healey’s creations, and the

traditional workhorse of Ohio’s farms and businesses—pickup trucks.

The automobile industry has been a significant presence in Ohio for over a cen-

tury. The legacies of innovation and quality of the early days of motoring are carried

on by today’s modern factories producing world-class parts and automobiles across

the state.

The proceeds from the Ault Park Concours support Juvenile Arthritis research and

assistance programs of the Arthritis Foundation, benefiting the many children and their

families in the Southern Ohio region who are afflicted with this debilitating disease.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Ault Park—one of Cincinnati’s many beautiful city

parks - to view the spectacular vehicles on display, and we thank you for support-

ing this grand event. To those visiting from out of state, it is our hope that you will

A Letter from the Mayor

On behalf of the City of Cincinnati, it’s my great

pleasure to welcome you to the Ault Park Concours

d’Elegance.

During the past 39 years, this event has attracted thousands

of spectators and participants from across the United States

and Canada, becoming one of the most anticipated events

for classic car enthusiasts in the entire nation.

Ever since the first event was held at the estate of William

and Helen Williams in 1978, Concours d’Elegance has become

associated with presenting the best of classic car design, gen-

erating excitement far and wide among aficionados.

I am especially excited about the theme of this year’s

event, “An Italian Icon—Ferrari.” As you know, it’s also the

100th anniversary of BMW and the 50th anniversary of the

Ford GT-40, so I expect this year’s displays will be especially

interesting and engaging.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the

Concours committee for all of its hard work. Event organiz-

ers have generated more than $1 million for our local chapter

of the Arthritis Foundation. Your efforts have been crucial to

bringing new awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis,

and the Greater Cincinnati community is grateful.

Cincinnati is a city where you will find unparalleled arts,

celebrated cultural institutions, and world-class entertain-

ment options. We are proud to be the home to one of the top

five zoos in the nation, excellent museums, a nationally rec-

ognized park system, and critically acclaimed restaurants.

After enjoying the Concours weekend, I hope you will take

time to visit the many attractions and amenities that have

made our city a popular tourist destination over the years.

I t is once again my great honor to welcome you to the 39th annual Ault Park Concours d’Elegance, one of the oldest and most respected celebrations of vintage and classic cars in the U.S. From the early days at the Williams estate, we have strived to present an interesting and exciting display of auto-

motive elegance, and this year is no different. Ferraris, Austin Healeys, BMWs, Ford GT40s, and pickup trucks…and that’s not all…the show field will be covered with gleaming American and foreign vintage cars, sports cars, muscle cars, and motorcycles of every description.

New this year will be a beer garden featuring craft beers from brewers here in the Greater Cincinnati area. Relax with a cold one from a vantage point high above the field and enjoy both the view and the automotive artwork next door.

The Concours is not just a beautiful walk in the park—it’s an event that all Cincinnatians can be proud of. Hundreds of volunteers spend countless hours to ensure a wonderful experience for exhibitors and participants. From the Chief Judge

The 2016 team of judges and I would like to thank all of the car owners for bringing such a wonder-ful group of vehicles to our 39th Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. I hope that you will enjoy this year’s event as much as we enjoy planning it for you.

Judging at Ault Park Concours follows the traditional Concours d’Elegance standards set by the early events that took place in the ’20s and ’30s where style, presence, and elegance determine the winners. The judges will also take into account the historical significance of the design of the car, as well as assessing the quality and accuracy of the restoration of the interior, exterior, and the engine compartment.

Again this year we are awarding two Best of Show awards, the first from the traditional classes and the second, an Esprit de Sport award selected from the sports car and racing classes.

We have assembled a highly qualified team of judges from around the country to aid in the selection of Best of Class, First Place, and Awards of Distinction for each class. We also have many special awards and, lastly, the two Best of Show awards.

We believe every vehicle on the field is a winner, and we would love to give every one of you a trophy for taking the time from your busy schedules to display such beautiful works of art for the enjoyment of the public and to further such a wonderful cause.

2016 Featured Cover Artist

Charles J. Maher was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but grew up in Miami, Florida. He attended the University of Notre Dame and received a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art in 1968.

Charles has been an independent artist since 1988. He first worked as a designer for Ford Motor Company. He later worked 14 years with a graphics firm in Detroit designing production car graphics for Ford, GM, Honda, and Toyota, as well as projects such as pace car graphics for the Indianapolis 500 and the Long Beach Grand Prix.

Dan McCrary was born in 1949 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and developed a lifelong passion for cars fueled by weekly outings to a local speedway as well as the exuberant car designs of the ’50s.

His automotive fine art has received many awards, including the first Dave Holls Award given at Meadowbrook and the Richard A. Teague Award, and placement in quite a few prominent private and corporate collections. His work has been seen in many publications, including Road & Track, Street Rodder, Auto Aficionado, Hemmings Classic Car, and Automobile Quarterly.

Steve T. Petrosky has loved automobiles all his life, beginning with his family’s AMC/Jeep dealership where he “raced” cars on the showroom floor.

His versatile style reflects a knowledge of the automobile that permits him to work at numerous levels of detail. Speed, color, and motion of racing cars are often subjects of his paintings.

Steve’s automotive art is balanced with his commercial art done solely on computer. His client list includes Apex Awards, The Kroger Company, Superior Label Systems, W/S Packaging, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Panoz Motorsports, and Doran Racing.

Bob Colaizzi graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1958 as a design major and spent most of his professional life as owner of ICON, a national annual report design and branding firm. Following retirement, he designed Art Deco furniture, then focused on automotive art. His style is based on a lifelong interest in realistic drawing.

The drawing base can still be seen in his finished work. The color rendering is created digitally. Many of the subjects in his work are vintage race cars, as Bob has been a vintage racer for 30 years. Please visit the website he shares with his design partner/son, Tony: colaizzidesign.com.

Will Sherman Art Show

DAVID BOWEN has been a fine-art dealer in Cincin-nati for more than 30 years with expertise in a broad spectrum of art, specializ-

ing in 19th and 20th century Cincinnati artists. He also served as the executive director of Great American Artists, an annual invitational exhibition and sale of well-established American repre-sentational artists that benefited local nonprofit organizations.

MARK EBERHARD has sketched and photographed animals in Kenya and all over the United States and has secured a place as one

of America’s best wildlife painters—par-ticularly when it comes to birds. Mark has won numerous awards and has been the featured artist in a number of invitational shows throughout the United States. His work is included in private, public, and museum collections throughout the world. In 2010, the Na-tional Museum of Wildlife Art honored him with a six-month exhibition.

PAULA NORTON has been in the business of capturing the finest visual images of Cincinnati for more than 40 years. Her clients include

Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Magazine, and the Cincinnati USA Regional Cham-ber. Paula has been involved with many community organizations through the years. She has also taught community education classes and workshops at The Art Academy of Cincinnati and of-fers private classes for individuals.

JOHN RUTHVEN, recipi-ent of the National Medal of the Arts from President Bush, is an internationally acclaimed wildlife artist

whose work is in the White House Collection as well as other major col-lections throughout the world. John started as an illustrator and commer-cial artist, then dedicated his full-time efforts to fine art as a wildlife artist. He is also a well-known naturalist and conservationist.

2016 ART SHOW JUDGES

Tony Sikorski is a Pittsburgh native, graphic designer, and illustrator. In l976, he started a graphic business, retiring in 1994. He then decided to combine his two passions of art and autos, choosing to portray cars sculpturally.

Tony has worked with many different media in the past, but he currently works in wood and stainless steel. In 2006, he was accepted into the Automobile Fine Art Society. This year marks his 22nd year of creating sculptures.

Sue Steele Thomas began her art career at the age of five and has continued with the dream of becoming a skilled and master painter. Sue has been painting automobiles since 1988. Her paintings have been exhibited in many invitational and juried exhibits throughout the country.

Sue is a professor of art and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Radford University and Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Fredonia. She is an associate member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society.

2016 Student Artist

Ben Treinen is a longtime enthusiast of modern and classic automobiles and an avid newcomer to the field of automotive art and design. As a 2016 graduate of Moeller High School and a student of Moeller’s renowned art program, Ben received exposure to an array of fine arts and design instruction. Ben will

be attending the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, to pursue a major in transportation design. He aspires to secure a career designing automotive exteriors. He enjoys creating fine art of new, innovative designs as well as classic and iconic automobiles in a realistic fashion. In his work, he strives to present automobiles in the most realistic fashion by paying close attention to design details and form.

Ben was recently recognized at the Detroit Autorama and took first place in a contest to design a 2025 Dodge SRT Hellcat. The national contest for high school students was organized by FCA US, a Michigan automaker that’s part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and makes Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge Ram, and FIAT vehicles.

Kids Get Arthritis Too!

Despite the common yet inac-curate belief that arthritis is “an old person’s” disease, 300,000

American children endure the debili-tating pain and severely disabling ef-fects of juvenile arthritis (JA) in its many forms. From systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)—a form of rheumatoid arthritis seen in children—to systemic sclerosis—a form of arthri-tis that affects the skin, muscle tissue, joints, blood vessels, and even internal organs—juvenile arthritis robs children of the joys of childhood, altering and even threatening their lives.

Although there are effective treat-ments available for some forms of JA, none of them were developed especially for children. Even JA patients who have access to doctors with a clear understanding of the varying forms of the disease must still undergo a process of trial and error before an effective treatment is determined. This wastes valuable time while the child endures chronic pain and the disease progresses, causing lasting damage and disability.

The Arthritis Foundation has been fighting juvenile arthritis and sup-porting families for more than 60 years. The Arthritis Foundation Ohio River Valley goals are to provide local JA families with education, re-sources, and support for managing juvenile arthritis through our JA pro-grams. The following excerpt, from a grateful parent of a 5-year-old girl with JIA, tells the story of how these programs can make a big impact in their lives:

“My 5-year-old daughter, Sierra, has JIA, which is still not con-trolled after over a year of treatments. She already has permanent damage to both knees, one ankle, and the joints of her hands. The generous people who made it possible for our family to participate in the JA Conference are heroes to us. Sierra met her new best friend, Madison, at the conference who understands and shares her challenges with JIA. I promised I would do everything possible to protect Sierra. Thank you for helping me keep that promise.”

Our programs, resources, and continued research into a cure would not be possible without the support of our partners. The Concours d’Elegance has been our leading JA partner and supporter of our pro-grams for more than seven years and a benefactor of the Arthritis Foun-dation Ohio River Valley for 39 years. Hagerty Youth Judging ProgramWe welcome Hagerty representative Stephanie Ruotsala, who joins us to head up their 2016 Youth Judging Program at the Ault Park Concours. Now in the sixth year of our “Partnership for Youth” with Hagerty, we are even more energized to introduce new kids to this special auto-motive experience. The enthusiasm and intensity with which our youth judges set out to select their winning vehicles is truly inspiring!

A testimonial to the success of the pro-gram is Kevin Scarpa of Loveland, Ohio. Serving as a Hagerty youth judge for two years, Kevin graduated in 2015 to the position of apprentice judge on the Con-cours judging team! He returns this year to continue his apprenticeship, “fueled” by his love of cars. The Ault Park Concours is proud to have one of the largest youth judging teams in the country. We are truly grateful for Hagerty’s support with foster-ing future generations of car enthusiasts.

Hagerty provides the official judging gear, including T-shirts, hats, and score-cards, and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are preselected to be scored by the Youth Judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportu-nity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the deter-mination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria.

IN THE SUMMER OF 1952, CINCINNATIAN EDMUND “EBBY” LUNKEN BOUGHT a 166MM Ferrari, and Cincinnati car culture has never been the same since.

Like many a young American returning home from WWII, Lunken, who was a pilot in the war, sought out high-speed thrills stateside in the form of road racing. And few cars could provide racing thrills like those pro-duced by Enzo Ferrari in Maranello, Italy.

Born in 1898, Ferrari was a well-established driver and race team man-ager with Alfa Romeo in the 1920s and ’30s. Once Italy began to recover from the war in the late 1940s, Enzo began designing, selling, and prepar-ing cars bearing his own name.

Right from inception Ferrari’s cars proved victorious in Europe, with the first major win coming in 1949 at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.

Keenly aware of Ferrari’s success in Europe, Lunken was intent on be-coming an early Ferrari adopter here in the states. As heir to the valve manufacturing company founded by his grandfather Frederick Lunken-heimer, Lunken had the resources and connections necessary to bring such a rare Italian machine into the U.S.

He also had the help of Luigi Chinetti. Chinetti was Italian born, but became a U.S. citizen during WWII. As one of the winning drivers on the

1949 Le Mans team and a close pal of Enzo Ferrari, Chinetti set up a Ferrari distributorship in the U.S. to market the “prancing horse” to wealthy sportsmen just like Lunken.

In 1953, Lunken took his newly bought 166MM to the famed 12-hour race in Sebring, Florida, where he finished sixth over-all and first in class with fellow driver and Cincinnatian Charles Hassan.

Hassan, who worked in his family’s construction company, had also started a firm in Indian Hill that imported and sold British sports cars.

having, several other thrill-seek-ing Cincinnatians sought out rac-ing Ferraris, and thus the famed Cincinnati Gang—a group of swashbuckling well-to-do sports car racers from the Queen City—was formed.

“From the point that Lunken first took to the track to the next eight years, six different Cincin-natians drove over 20 different Ferraris in 146 starts winning 39 times. It was quite a ride into the record books,” says Kurt Nie-meyer, editor of Cincy Motors-ports Journal and a sports car racer himself.

In 1956, Lunken drove a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa to several vic-tories and earned a Sports Car Club of America National Cham-pionship in the E Modified class. Fellow Cincinnati racers John Quackenbush, Howard Hively, and James Johnston also com-peted in Ferrari TRs, with John-ston taking his own SCCA Nation-al Championship in 1958.

“About 41 Testa Rossas were produced among the 500 TR, 500 TRC, and 250 TR models. Seven of those cars made their way to Cincinnati, or about 17 percent of all the cars built in three years,” Niemeyer says.

Motorsports author Carl Goodwin recalls the Cincinnati Gang “frequently gathered at road races in the Midwest, lin-ing their cars up in the paddock to form a wonderful Ferrari row.” Goodwin chronicles the Cincin-nati Gang’s exploits in his fasci-nating book about the burgeon-ing days of sports car racing, They Started in MGs.

By 1959, most of The Cincin-nati Gang had left racing. In 1995, both Chuck Hassan and Ebby Lunken passed away. “Hassan and his friends were front run-ners at many of the major races, and they’ll be remembered as part of the golden age of sports cars in the ’50s,” Goodwin wrote.

100 YEARS OF BMW

IN MARCH OF 1916 THE BAYERISCHE Motoren Werke began as a merger of two German aircraft engine manufacturers, but by 1919 the armistice that ended WWI caused the company to shift its focus away from air-planes and into motorcycles and automobiles. Thus was born one of the world’s great brands—BMW. This year’s Ault Park Concours d’Elegance celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the company that brought the world the “Ultimate Driving Machine.”

Few companies have produced as wide a variety of vehicles as BMW. One only needs to look at the contrast between Michael Mc-Closkey’s 1957 BMW Isetta slide window cabriolet, Jerry Ball’s 1959 R50 motorcycle, and Rick Grant’s 1972 CSL 3.0 to see the breadth of machinery that has rolled out of Munich.

The CSL is a lightweight version of BMW’s flagship 6-cylinder coupe, boasting a fuel-injected, 3-liter engine producing 200 horse-power capable of pushing the elegant coupe to a top speed beyond 130 miles per hour—quite remarkable for a 1970s touring car.

The Isetta couldn’t be more different than the CSL. Always a crowd favorite, the Isetta generates lots of smiles with its three-wheel configuration, front opening door, and overall egg shape. Originally conceived in Italy by Iso (Isetta means “little Iso”), the Isetta was licensed for manufacture all over the world, and the ver-sion BMW made became the most popular.

During a time in the late 1950s when gas prices were soaring in Europe, the Isetta’s 1-cylinder engine capable of 50 miles per hour and 70 miles per gallon became a hot seller.

FERRARI ON DISPLAYThe Cincinnati Gang’s passion for speed lives on today with the tri-state region’s remarkable trove of historically significant Ferraris, several of which can be seen at this year’s Ault Park Concours.

Concours attendees, for exam-ple, will have a chance to see two of local collector Jim Jaeger’s insane-ly rare Ferraris: a 1962 250 GTO and a 1967 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider.

Fewer than 40 GTOs were made between 1962 and 1964, and many consider them to be the most beautiful and highly coveted Ferraris ever made. Jaeger’s GTO is one of the rarest in existence being one of only two that were originally fitted with a larger 4-liter V12, hence it had a “330 LM” desig-nation when it raced at LeMans in 1962. It now has the normal 3-liter engine installed with a “250” des-ignation, named for the fact that each cylinder has 250 cubic centi-

meters of displacement. Jaeger’s 1967 GTB, a gorgeous

open-top example, derives the “N.A.R.T.” part of its name from the North American Racing Team. Luigi Chinetti, so instrumental in Ferrari’s early history in America (including the earlier mentioned associa-tion with Ebby Lunken) formed his own American-based Ferrari rac-ing team in 1958. The team actively campaigned until 1982, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965, and collaborated with some of the world’s most renowned drivers, in-cluding Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, and Pedro Rodriguez.

The story goes that Chinetti re-quested Ferrari make a convert-ible “Spider” version of its 275 so that he could market the 275 in top down–loving America. Thus these beauties, only 10 of which were produced, have been ever-more known as “N.A.R.T. Spiders.”

THE PICKUP TRUCK IS A TRULY American invention, and it has its origins in custom bodies for hauling cargo that were put on Ford and Dodge chassis in the 1910s and 1920s. Today, of course, the pickup truck is ubiq-uitous in the U.S., and more of-ten than not, is used as a family passenger vehicle rather than an actual workhorse.

Terry Jacobs’s 1940 Inter-national D2 is a nice example of the days when trucks were meant for work, but still had a utilitarian charm. Jacobs’s D2 is back from a relatively recent 10-month, ground-up restora-tion featuring a fresh coat of its original light shade of factory green. The 4,600-pound Inter-national is powered by a 6-cylin-der, 213 cubic-inch motor mated to a three-speed transmission that is shifted from the floor.

Another unique truck on hand for the Concours is the 1961 Corvair Rampside pickup of Joe Slagle from London, Ohio. Most car people know the story of the Corvair—Chevrolet’s innovative but short-lived rear-engine, air-cooled automobile—but not many realize there’s a pickup version. One of the most novel features of this pickup is its “rampside” door, which lowers down from the side of the bed and forms a ramp upon which heavy cargo can be rolled into the cargo bed.

ONE OF THE RACING FERRARIS once owned by Howard Hively, a member of the famed Cincin-nati Gang of 1950s sports car racers, became embroiled in a fascinating legal drama over the last several years.

In the late 1950s, Hively sold his 1954 Ferrari 4.9-liter 375 Spi-der to another Cincinnati resi-dent, Karl Kleve. In 1989, the Fer-rari disappeared from the Green Township property where it had been kept for several decades. The car eventually ended up in Europe in the hands of a Belgian collector, who had bought and fully restored the car.

Displayed as part of the Ferra-ri factory’s museum, the car was discovered to be the ex-Howard Hively Ferrari, and a complicat-ed legal dispute about the car’s rightful ownership ensued be-tween several parties, including Kleve’s family and the Belgian who possessed the car. As part of litigation, the parties eventu-ally resolved to auction off the Ferrari and split the proceeds.

In 2014, the historic Ferrari hammered home for $15 million at the Bonhams auction held at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. But the legal issues didn’t stop there.

Additional pending legal dis-putes regarding the car’s own-ership surfaced after the auction sale. To date, the saga continues.

own personal cars will also be on display at this year’s Concours. The 1967 330 GTS was purchased directly from Chinetti by Scott Is-quick of Pepper Pike, Ohio, after his wife, Pamela, fell in love with it at a vintage race at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.

The car features a number of noteworthy features including its original factory giallo paint (also known as Fly Yellow because, some say, bright yellow Ferraris tend to attract flying insects), a special third seat that Chinetti perhaps special ordered so his granddaughter could ride along, and a Daytona inlet manifold with six carburetors that push the car to 400-plus horsepower.

Ferrari, of course, continues on today as one of the world’s fore-most car brands.

Cincinnati collector Alan Stat-man will share a pair of 2016 Fer-raris at this year’s Concours—a

2014 F12 Berlinetta and a 488 GTB. The GTB is an evolution of the 458 Italia that preceded it, featuring a smaller, yet more powerful, 3.9-liter engine cracking out 660 horsepow-er courtesy of twin turbochargers. Naught to 62 miles per hour comes in just three seconds, and top speed is reported to be 205 mph.

Where the 488 makes power from forced induction, the F12 Ber-linetta offers good old-fashioned Ferrari brute force. The F12 has a front engine 6.3-liter V12 generat-ing 730 horsepower. Despite that enormous lump under the hood, the F12 is reported to be a car that’s comfortable and luxurious enough to drive every day.
