i The Amman Chamber of Commerce was established in 1923 and is one of the major and oldest

service institutions of public interest. The Chamber incorporates more than forty thousand trade

and service companies with capitals amounting to 42.5 billion Jordanian Dinar. It therefore plays

an important role in the socioeconomic progress and prosperity in light of the important trade

and service sector which it represents including its different fields and activities. Besides, it has a

wide network of bilateral, regional and international cooperation ties which the Chamber seeks to

expand in various possible means and methods.

iii The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) – a subsidiary of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation – is

the main provider for water and sanitation. The services are provided directly or through public

companies owned by the WAJ. Together with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, WAJ is

responsible for water resource planning and monitoring. Beside its services the WAJ is also

regulating and licensing the water abstraction by all users.

iv The Za’atari refugee camp is one of the world’s largest refugee camps. Za’atari, located on the

Syrian border, was first opened on the 28th of July 2012 and is under the joint administration of

the Jordanian Government and UNHCR. According to the UNHCR more than 83.500 refugees

are registered. The vast majority of refugees in the camp are from Da’ara Governorate in Syria.

The camp is – since its establishment – no longer just a temporary accommodation for many of

its residents and has become a permanent settlement. Regardless of the harsh environment inside

the camp entrepreneurial residents have set up businesses and the demand for general goods and

services is continuously increasing.

v Aqaba is Jordan’s only coastal city situated at the northeastern part of the Red Sea and is one of

Jordan’s main tourist attractions. It’s not just famous for its rich marine life, Aqaba is also best

known for its numerous hotels and mega projects. The City of Aqaba is furthermore benefiting

from its location and status as Jordan’s only seaport and special economic zone. Based on its

industrial and commercial activities, Aqaba’s economic growth is higher than the average

economic growth of Jordan.

vi The Aqaba Water Company (AWC) was first established as a government-owned and

commercially run water company and began its operations in 2004. Aqaba Water is owned by the

Water Authority of Jordan and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority. The company was

set up to manage the water and sewerage system of Aqaba.

vii The Disi Aquifer is a shared groundwater basin which lies beneath the southern desert of

Jordan. The resources of Disi Aquifer are shared by the Kingdom of Jordan (10%) and the

Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia (90%). The basin is approximately 250 km long and 50 km wide.

According to the Disi Water Company the water in the aquifer will last for a minimum of 50

years. The Government of Jordan has developed the Disi Water Conveyance Project to provide

100 Million cubic meter of potable water every year for municipal and industrial users. The water

from the basin is piped to Amman, and other cities in Jordan to meet an increasing demand for

fresh water.
