County Fair Swine Identification

FAIR NEWS

There are two ways that 4-H & FFA members can identify

hogs for the Swine Show at the Allamakee County Fair.

1. The Swine Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, March 28 at the fairgrounds from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Members need to attend the weigh-in if they want to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest or Derby Class.

4-H youth will need to go into 4-H Online and verify their swine weigh-in information.

2. Members can self-tag swine by picking up tags and a

tagger from the Extension Office between April 15-

May 15. All swine ID forms must be completed. If ear

notched please note that on ID sheet, and returned to

the Extension Office with a picture of each tag in the

hog’s ear by May 15. Digital photos are acceptable

by email to [email protected]. Members who self

-tag pigs are not eligible for Rate-of-Gain or Derby

class.

All State Fair swine exhibitors contact Morgan at the Ex-

tension Office.

The cost for the process is $8/pig.

All state fair market and breeding swine will still need to

have a DNA ear punch tag provided by Extension Staff

and will be need to be identified by May 15.

For additional rules and requirements call the Extension

Office or go to www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/

swine for more information.

Poultry Exhibitors

The Allamakee County 4-H/FFA fairbooks will be on their

way to you. Club leaders may pick up the fairbooks off

the club shelves, after March 10. New families to 4-H will

be receiving a blue binder with the fairbook inside, fami-

lies that have been in 4-H will receive the packet to put

inside your binder. This year we will be printing the

whole fairbook, so please recycle your 2014 fairbook.

Additional copies of the fairbook may be purchased for

$5.00 at the Extension Office.

The Market Derby Poultry class is back! Class is limited to chickens only. To be eligible, birds must have been ordered through the Allamakee County Extension Office. Allamakee County Extension will not be held liable for the health and well- being of the poultry once they have been picked up by the exhibitor(s). Each exhibitor will be allowed to enter one pen of two derby poultry. The number of birds entered in this project IS included in the total number of birds allowed to be entered in the fair. A pen of two consists of 2 birds of either sex. For complete list of rules look at your 2015 Allamakee County Fairbook www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/page/member-info Orders must be placed and paid for at the Extension office by April 10. Chicks will be identified with numbered wing bands indicating these birds are part of the market derby project. These numbered bands will be recorded on a poultry identification form for each exhibitor. Distribution of chicks will be done on a first come first serve basis. All chicks will be Straight-Run Cornish-Rock. Chicks will be vaccinated for Marek’s Disease before they arrive. Chicks will also have their Pullorum Certificates. For an entry form and more information visit www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee/4h
