The scientific pro-gram will feature special topic symposia and poster and oralpaper presentations on the latest weed science research. Therewill be special pre-meeting Leafy Green Vegetable tour of theWintergarden area of Texas as well as a statistic workshop onMonday . In addition, there will be a special all-day symposiumon Thursday on Nursery Stock vs. Invasive Plants. The entireprogram will be posted on the WSSA web site ( HYPERLINK"http://www.wssa.net" www.wssa.net). Symposium speakersand those who register by December 30th, 2006 will receive theirprinted programs in the mail. Please be sure to bring those pro-grams with you to the meeting.. Leafy Green Vegetable Tour

Winter is the time for vegetables, atleast in Texas! Agricultural land inTexas consists of over 150 million acres, with 600,000 acres producing horticul-tural crops. Texas is a leading producerof winter-grown vegetables, includingthe region known as the Texas Winter-garden. This region includes manycounties located in southwestern Texasnear the Rio Grande River and Mexico, and contains over 40,000 acres of veg-etables valued annually at $85 million. In addition, over 49,000 acres of pecansare produced in the region with an esti-mated value of $58 million. The cool, mild winter climate and fertile soilsoffer excellent growing conditions forspinach and other leafy greens, as wellas onions, cabbage, carrots, beets, pota-toes and green beans.

On Sunday, February 4, 2007, atten-dees at the 47th annual Weed ScienceSociety of America meeting held inSan Antonio will be able to participateon an all day tour of the Wintergardenregion to experience Texas-sized agri-cultural production. This tour willinclude visits to local producer’s farms

in Frio, Zavala and Uvalde counties, aswell as a visit to the Del Monte Agri-cultural Research Farm where herbi-cide and disease control research isconducted in cooperation with Texas A& M University and the University ofArkansas spinach breeding program. After tasting an authentic Texas BBQ,tour participants will also be offered aunique opportunity to see up closewhat it takes annually to produce mil-lions of cans of spinach and other veg-etables at the Del Monte ProcessingPlant located in Crystal City. Alongthe way participants may also be able toview Texas-sized cattle, sheep and goatranches, as well as other “wild critters”found in the region.

The tour is being coordinated by theWeed Science Society of America, theTexas A & M University AgriculturalResearch & Extension Center andTexas Cooperative Extension, as wellas support from Del Monte Foods andthe Wintergarden Spinach ProducersBoard. Tour sponsors includeAMVAC, BASF, Chemtura, DowAgroSciences, Gowan Company,

Helena Chemical, Syngenta, UAPChemical, and Wilbur-Ellis.

Cost for the tour is $20.00 per per-son. The tour bus will leave the confer-ence hotel at 7:30 a.m. and will returnat approximately 5:30 p.m.

Statistical Assessment of Dose-responseCurves with Free SoftwareOrganizers: Jens C. Streibig and

Christian Ritz (KVL, Copenhagen, Denmark).

Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel, San Antonio, Texas

Time: 7 a.m. -4 p.m. February 5, 2007

Cost: $150

Course DescriptionA repeat of last year’s course. Herbicidesare designed to kill plants and their selec-tive use in crops is a question of dose. Con-sequently, use of dose-response curves isfundamental to understanding herbicideselectivity and efficacy. This principle canbe extended to other branches of weedmanagement, e.g. allelopathy, flame weed-ing, weed steaming, physical control, lasercutting and radiation and weed crop com-petition.

Dose-response curves, germinationcurves, and competition models are gen-uine non-linear. The way they are summa-rized varies and often depends on traditionand/or available statistical software ratherthan theoretical considerations of the bestway to exploit the information contained inthe data.

The aim of the course is to make partici-pants able to succinctly assess toxicity onthe basis of proper choice of dose-responsemodels and compare dose-response curvesstatistically using the free software pro-gramme R and a specific developed exten-sion package, drc, developed for weed sci-entists and freely downloadable at URL:www.bioassay.dk. Additionally the packagedrc can also be used to fit germinationcurves and user-defined functions, forexample competition models.

Course Content 1) The meaning of dose-response curves2) Installation of R and how to work with

the programme.3) Fitting and comparing dose-response

curves, e.g.: discrete versus gradual end-points, relative versus raw data, upperand lower limits, measurement of effi

cacy and index of selectivity, bioassaydesign, heterogeneity of variance, which model to choose and how toassess hormesis responses.

4) Working on handout data or, preferen-tially, own data.

ParticipantsGraduates and postgraduate students,

weed scientists in public and private insti-tutions. There will be a maximum of 25attendee s. Participants must bring theirown PC and data to get the maximum ben-efit from the course.

Course MaterialEssential course material will be e-

mailed to participants one week before thecourse and a cd with all material will be dis-tributed to participants at the course.

PrerequisiteBasic knowledge of statistics, including

regression analysis, would be preferable.Participants must bring their own PC;PC’s will not be provided.
