Preface The 4th Hiroshima Workshop on Sustainable Materials Science (SMS2009) is held in Higashi-Hiroshima city, Japan, November 13-15, 2009, along a series of the Hiroshima Workshop, of which the first, second and third ones have been held in Hiroshima in 1992, 2002 and 2005, respectively. The purpose of this Workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of the latest progress in specific topics listed below. Some of the top experts in these fields will be invited speakers. 1.
