FeaturesThe net free area through all 5000 and5010 Series Flame Arrester banks isthree to four times the unit pipe size,resulting in increased flow capacity withminimal pressure drop. The large surfacearea of the bank also improves heatdissipation.

Varec 5000 and 5010 Series FlameArresters are designed with a uniqueextendible aluminum bank frame (seephotos on page 10). The corrugatedsheets can be individually inspected androutinely cleaned without removal fromthe frame.

If the bank assembly requiresreplacement, the frame slides easily outof the arrester. It is not necessary to jackapart the end housings or connectingpiping.

Additionally, the unitized housing doesnot require support for proper bankalignment during maintenance, as maybe necessary with spiral bank arresters.This is especially useful in applicationswhere frequent inspection and cleaningis anticipated.

The 5010 Series is designed with an“off-set” housing, providing anadvantage over symmetrical housingsand spiral bank designs. Generally, flowcapacity is not affected by condensateaccumulation, even when installed inhorizontal piping. By design, the bank ispositioned above any area wherecondensate would accumulate. Eachunit is fitted with a 1/2” NPT drain plug atthe low point, conveniently located forroutine draining. A Varec Drip Trapshould be specified for field installationat this connection to provide for saferemoval of condensate.

OperationVarec 5000 and 5010 Series FlameArresters stop the propagation of aflame by absorbing and dissipating heatthrough the surface area of the banksheets. Ignited vapor attempting to pass

through the arrester is forced throughsmall passages within the bankassembly. Heat is absorbed, loweringthe temperature of the gas below itsignition point and quenching the flame.

ApplicationsThe arresters are designed to stop thepropagation of flame (Group “D” gases)from external sources. They can bemounted up to 15 feet upstream of theignition source in accordance with ULapproval, or 10 pipe diameters inaccordance with FM approvalrequirements.

5000 Series (formerly Figure 50) is forvertical installation. 5010 Series(formerly Figure 53) is for horizontal orvertical installation.
