Carmen Espino, [email protected], Manteca As much as I would like to join you all at our 50th class reunion, my health does not permit me to. But I will be looking forward to seeing all the pictures in the newsletter, and hopefully facebook.. I appreciate all the effort in putting the class information out there for us classmates to see. Have a great time! to all of you..take lots of pictures....regards, Carmen Espino Huerta
Henry Ponce ,[email protected], Salinas. Hi C - I'm sorry, but due to health problems, my wife and I will be unable to attend the reunion. First- I do home dialysis and I have to be home at the latest 10 Pm in order to be connected to the machine, and I am on it for 9 hours while I am in bed, Also, I got gangrene on my right toe. It got amputated, and I walk with a cane, and my balance is off. (I go to physical theraphy starting next week to try and regain my balance). Thnx - Henry
Pat Allred [email protected]. Boise ID. Again many thanks for all you do to try to keep us all connected. The reunion sounds wonderful, but we will not be able to make it. A new grandbaby will be arriving about that time and I need to be here to take care of the siblings of the new baby. It will be grandbaby 39 for me. 38 will arrive a couple of weeks before that. I wish I had a picture of me and all my grandchildren, but I just get little pictures. Pat
Don Ricci, Las Vegas, [email protected] I recently bought a house in Las Vegas. My wife is back in school in the Philippines. It's her last semester. Commencement is on October 31 so I will miss the 50th reunion. Also, I'm having a hard time with the passing of my dear friend Steve Markley. We will return to the USA. Hopefully, there will be more reunions so we can attend. Don

Sue Ann Holt, Ben Lomond, [email protected]. This is a very difficult time for me, but the prayers are helpful. Hope you and our classmates have a wonderful time at the reunion. Sue
Karin Rasmussen, Clinton AR, [email protected] You and the NSHS team do such a wonderful job of "reporting". I appreciate what you do. I have already had my annual California vacation. The family continues to grow.
Greetings to my classmates across the globe. Happy 50th ya'll!
Our food pantry now serves over 400 households every week. I try not to miss the weekly workdays if possible. But I do HAVE TO HAVE my annual with the kids. I'll be thinking of you all in October. Karin

I’m sending a more recent photo to use in the newsletter. I went to a home show last year and WON a free sitting with a local photographer. ( I never win anything so was really chuffed when he called.) The camera doesn’t usually like me but these turned out OK.
Can you use this one from now on?
Well, its getting close now.
Slowly, slowly the excitement is building.
It doesn’t seem possible that it was ten years ago that we were all together in Monterey for the 40th NSHS Class of 1964 Fortieth Reunion.
The band that night was fantastic!
Judy Simpson was there.
November 15, 1946 - December 2, 2005
I remember she spoke to everyone, saying goodbye so earnestly and giving everyone a hug. She knew that it was the last time we would see her… but we didn’t. A brave lady.
And now we have lost Nick Losada, a lovely man. And God knows this world needs good men.
August 9, 1946 - May 21, 2014
Sometimes I think of my parents when they were losing friends and classmates at the same time in their lives. I remember my father was especially affected by the losses. His high school class, Grass Valley High Class of ’31, had less than 100 graduates but for their 65th reunion there were still 11 of them attending and only one who couldn’t make it. Incredible.
And now, we have become our parents and its our turn to go through this stage of life. All in all, I think that we turned out bette r than OK. As teenagers we didn’t see the real value in each other, but as an adult, I look at our classmates with admiration and affection at how decent a group they are. Most of my Kiwi friends can’t believe how connective we are!
Isn’t it fantastic that Chryss Rodinou, our foreign exchange student, is coming from Greece.
Athens, [email protected]
And I’ve been emailing Freddie Ligon lately and he seems excited about the event.
Thailand, [email protected]
I’m flying into San Francisco on Sept 29 and staying in the City for two nights. I’ve booked a ticket to see Bellini’s Norma at the SF Opera House because I adore opera and NZ is a wasteland in that area. ( Rugby, Beer and Racing is our national motto)
It will be more than 30 years since I’ve stepped foot in the War Memorial Opera House and there is always a frission of excitement when I stand in the foyer and look up at the staircase.
As kids, for our birthdays, our parents always gave us a ticket to either the ballet or an opera. I can remember clearly my first opera…… Dorothy Kirsten singing Madame Butterfly and my mom embarrassing me because she was in tears towards the end and kept sniffling.

MEANWHILE
BACK AT THE FARM
Piper Farm, Cambridge, New Zealand
This photo is of the stables which are attached to the main house. I have an apartment over the back garages
which I rent out, usually to little jockeys.
The day after I get back from the reunion trip I have an Irish couple coming to stay with me for 5 weeks. I rent my flat above the stable block to a darling little couple, both jockeys. Brendan is Irish and his partner, Ulrike is Swedish. I feel like an absolute elephant standing next to them. Both are apprentice jockeys but are at the top of the boards. I am now more like a surrogate mother to them, especially when raceday falls and it's hospitalization time. It’s a dangerous occupation and there are inevitable injuries but together we get through them. Right now, Brendan is
recovering from two broken vertebrae and a cracked pelvis. Last year it was an ankle. Ulrike has so far only had pulled muscles and bruises . I am so thankful that my son, Andrew, is built like a brick wall and could never, ever be a jockey in a million years. These kids take such awful chances every time they get up on one of those fizzy-brained thoroughbreds;
*See below under "Grandparents Day" for a little jockey photo
I’ve just had the farrier here to do a horse’s feet. Sometimes the “chop and change “ of my days drives me nuts. Not all horses are ready to have their feet done at the same time so the farrier comes as needed. Vets are another constant visitor to the farm with a penchant for never arriving when they say they are. And naturally the weather dictates what you can do outside on any given day. There are times when I wish I had a nine to five job where free time was set. With such an erratic time schedule, you end up wasting hours of your day. So many jobs don’t get finished OR started because of the time factor.
( This is my whinge for the day) *it's a word…we just don’t use it stateside
I’m looking to get another dog to keep my Border Collie company. She is terribly lonesome so I'm looking to get another Labrador. My other dog, re-homed herself to the jockeys and lives with them now. She took one look at Brendan and it was love at first sight. He takes her everywhere in the car with him….. to the training track every morning, to the beach, to the races……she is in seventh heaven. Border Collies are hyper so the newcomer must have a calmer personality yet be young
enough to play. I would love another Cairn Terrier but they are too cheeky and aggressive for the Collie. And a LOT of work.
*Later, from Cecile
My last word on dogs. The word “ collie” in Scottish gaelic simply means “dog”. To the world, a collie is Lassie, the beautiful, long-haired multi-coloured dog.
*We're not talking about Lassie, here
A Border Collie is a different dog altogether, usually being black and white with medium long hair. Here in NZ, we use Border Collies as work dogs and the basis for a crossbreed dog called a Huntaway. These dogs are indispensable on the big farms, sheep stations and dairy operations. But the great thing about them is they make wonderful family pets because of their nature. The Border Collie here has been further refined into a short-coated variety which is what I have. Although the black and white collie is the most popular colourway, there is also the grey merle ( Chip) and a brown and white ( rare). I also have a Catahoula cross female dog that is an SPCA graduate.

Monk Seal encounter attack, Cathedrals II off Lanai, Hawaii
Feb. 10. 2009
Scuba diving at Cathedrals II off Lanai, Hawaii, a monk seal visits us, then attacks one of our team. For over 20 minutes the seal stayed with us. After, when we were all on board the boat, the monk seal came aboard, also.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PKDbJ-0gzs
NOAA had heard of this particular seal’s behavior, but never seen it. They captured and relocated it 2 days later. Usually monk seals are very shy and seeing one for 10 seconds from 100 ft away will make a diver’s week on Maui.
Here’s some highlights of one of my Maui trips.

Not much music. I’m surprised they didn’t knock this out because of Beatles song. I think Beatles doesn’t want them to and are one of few commercial bands that encourage use of their music.

He did all the backdrop and scenery including the massive waterfall, rocks, trees, bushes etc. It’s the best video I’ve seen of his work. Thought you might enjoy seeing it. There’s a bunch of talking going on as they didn’t know the guy was going to post it. Enjoy, Claire"

*Keith, the Winnett family thanks you for introduci ng the snare drum to bro Jimmy. But if you could have just taught him at least a couple more routines. We almost went crazy day and night listening to the one traditional snare drum cadence. I still hear it sometimes in my sleep.

*maybe not, but I found this pict that might depict your team. While Keith was teaching my brother to snare, you were teaching him the jump shot..I think he was 4' tall or a little less.

It was with great sadness that I read your second email regarding grandparents day. It would appear that NSHS failed us back in the day. I was able to read your email having learned to read in elementary school. It seems that unfortunately several of our classmates cannot read. I guess it is possible that the photos of pets are of their grandchildren but I don’t want to hear about it. (You might be a redneck if one of your grandkids is a dog) Anyway I am attaching two photos (I had to get them from my kids as I don’t carry around kid photos) One is of me (of course holding my first “McKenzie”) and the second is of me with my grandson “Neal” discovering chest hair. Take your pick. If you really want a cat picture I have one with my cat and a half of a rat (he only eats the top half and brings the rest home for me).

I have received more responses from those of you who do not have grandkids, but do have a pet....a dog, a cat, a bird , a gaggle of geese, etc. Well, bring it on! Don't want to discriminate against anyone. Those of us with a menagerie of grandchildren would love to see those of you with a menagerie of favored pets, for crying out loud! I know you asked for photos of grandkids but my trainer in Australia just sent me through this photo of Max and I. He is the last foal of my grand old mare, Triassic, and a big handsome colt. This photo was taken at the Cranbourne practice track in Melbourne, Australia where the colt is being trained. I flew over in May to see how he was progressing. The trainer who originally trained my mare is now training this colt. We have come full circle. It's about 6:30 AM and the sun was in my eyes. I am cautiously optimistic that this colt will perform at the top level like
his big brother did. We will be gearing him for the big weight-for-age races once he is fully mature in about 3 years. The "classic" horse is a slow grower unlike sprinters who hit the tracks as late 2 year olds. But it is the classic horse that runs in the big worldwide races like the Melbourne Cup, the Prince of Wales Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Dubai Mile, the American Breeders Turf Classic , the Japan Cup etc. Like his big brother, So You Think, these horses are the superstars of the racing industry and travel the world. I'm hoping to go along for the ride.

Back in the 1960’s when, I am told, the proletariat was prone to getting a little bit stoned, I adopted two pet rocks (not just stones—these are two of the most beautiful pet rocks that ever existed). They have matured in an exceptional way.
Pet Rock #1 Pet Rock #1 Pet Rock #1 Pet Rock #1 Pet Rock #2Pet Rock #2Pet Rock #2Pet Rock #2 No demands, never hungry, no messes, quiet, no blaming me about hard times (pun intended). They really are exceptional and wonderful. Yet you, Carolyn, in your narrow-minded discriminatory manner, won’t let my pet rocks (they really are more than just rocks to me) be seen by the world in your “August newsletter”. You invite grandkids, pets, even photoshops to your newsletter, yet my loved ones are excluded. I intend to write Dear Abbie about this insult. I am offended by your discriminatory actions regarding my loved ones. What have these little rocks ever done to you? Why do you hate them so much? Unless the August newsletter is opened to my pet rocks immediately, a conciliatory
move by you might be to invite their friends, the boulders, from the quarry as well, I may force myself to reconsider whether NSHS in 1964 was the wonderful inclusive place that you believe it to be. Or maybe it was a wonderful place, and some of us, as we age have developed discriminatory leanings? Is that you? Even your mea culpa attached letter does not address my discriminated against position. Not once, even as you throw open the doors to everyone else to your newsletter, do you include my beloved Pet Rocks. How could you do it? New World Order-not just yet, but soon,
signed, Big Daddy Rock

Carolyn, you have way too much time on your hands…….
*More from Jim - Going to retire in November and see what happens. Might work for my Son, build bird houses, tie flies, work around the house, what an emotional roller coaster it has been trying to get this done. No easy task.
*I am too!
What? You can't 'retire'.
You have single-handedly managed to bring together four-hundred and twenty-five people who shared a past life. We all went our separate ways and yet still enjoy hearing how each has faired.
How would we know about Meredith's pink Cadillac? Cecil living in New Zealand, raising horses
or Jim's country living ? And there's Freddie's stories from Thailand.
But most of all, getting in touch with old friends long forgotten. I know you have spent many hours each month putting the news letter together. It has been read and enjoyed.
You can't retire! Mike

here I am in the country."
