Freysinnet Ltd, specialist civil engineering contractors based inTelford, Shropshire, are now using Denso Tape on a regular basisto seal ducting prior to it being buried in concrete.

Denso Tape, a non-wovensynthetic fibre fabric coated withan adhesive compound based onpetrolatum, is used to seal twospigots to prevent concreteentering the ducting when it isbeing laid. This application is

now used on all Freysinnet slabjoints. Freysinnet also regularlyuse Denso Tape as ananti-corrosion coating onMacalloy Bars fixed toconcrete bases.

Exposed Surface Coating - Protecting Bolt Heads

Denso Tape Protection forNorthwich Swing Bridge.

A £3.5m refurbishment programme has been carried out on thehistoric Hayhurst swing bridge over the river Weaver in Northwich.British Waterways and Cheshire County Council worked inpartnership to complete the refurbishment as quickly as possible aspart of the new vision for Northwich, linked to the stabilisationof the salt mines.

Denso Tape, a non-wovensynthetic fibre fabric coated withan adhesive compound based onpetrolatum, is being used toprotect stainless steel bolt headsunderneath the walkways andon the angles of thebridge cantilevers.

Built in 1898, the Hayhurst

Bridge was Britain’s firstelectrically powered swingbridge and is a Grade II listedstructure. It was first refurbishedin 1976 and is now in need ofupgrading and strengtheningto cope with moderntraffic requirements.

The bridge incorporates an

innovative design that wasarrived at due to a number ofdifficulties relating to the site, including a continuingsubsidence problem due to saltextraction. It comprises a threespan (tail, spindle and nose)swing bridge and twoindependent approach spans. The bridge rotates on 76 conicalroller bearings and beneath thesuperstructure the bridge isconnected to a sealed circular, segmented pontoon placedunder the centre of gravity. The pontoon acts as a buoysupporting approximately twothirds of the dead load of thestructure, the rest beingsupported on cast ironscrew piles installed aroundthe pontoon.

Corrosion Prevention - Marine Piles

New York’s Historic LandmarkRenovation

In service for over 95 years, the timber piles had receivedmarine borer damage, whichthreatened the structural integrityof the slips. The pile repairsystem chosen was concreteencapsulation with rebar andfiberglass forms. This majorrehabilitation called for morethan 5,000 linear feet of timberpile repair with Denso’sFiber-Forms. The fiberglassforms provide a strong rigidform to allow concrete to bepumped into the annulus spacebetween the jacket andtimber pile.

Denso’s Fiber-Forms used forthe Battery Maritime Buildingwere custom fabricated to 3⁄16”thick utilizing woven-rovenconstruction. Installation

New York’s Battery Maritime Building received a $58 millionrenovation in which Denso’s SeaShield Fiber-Forms were used torehabilitate the timber piles supporting the slips. The building islisted on the National Register of Historic Places built in 1909 inthe ‘Iron Age’ with vaulted arches and ornamented structural steel. The building has over 140,000 square-feet and offers rarewaterfront views of Manhattan and The Statue of Liberty.

included installing areinforcement cage aroundthe piles and then installingthe fiberglass forms. Theconcrete was then pumpedinto the annulus space andto provide ease of

application the forms werefabricated in a translucent colorto allow the contractor to viewthe concrete level during thepumping operation. Thecompleted repair will provideyears of maintenance freestructural integrity to thetimber piles.

The contractor, David Hoyof Weeks Marine stated, “TheSeaShield Fiber-Forms wereextremely durable, high qualityand provided on-time delivery. The engineers and owners werepleased with the installation asthe application was completedahead of schedule.”

Corrosion Prevention - Protecting Buried Pipeline

Denso Protal 7200 used forNew Pipeline Application

Oilsand is the term used fora composition of sand, bitumen, mineral rich clays, and water.Alberta’s Oilsands contain thebiggest known reserve of oil inthe world. There is an estimated1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of oiltrapped in the Oilsands.

The Oilsand is partially minedin giant open pit mines. Theprocess begins by clearing theland of trees, stripping thetopsoil to reveal the ore body. The bitumen ore is loaded withhuge electric shovels into 400ton mechanical drive trucks. These trucks vary in size withthe largest having 3500horsepower, empty weight of685,000 pounds and a loadedweight of 1,400,000 pounds. The Oilsand is then transportedto a processing facility wherethe slurry is fed into aseparation vessel where itseparates into three layers-sand,water and bitumen. The bitumenis then transported to refineriesin central Alberta and refined forconsumer use.

Water makes up about 4% ofthe oil sand by weight. Itsurrounds each grain of sand, keeping it separate from the oil.Without this water envelope, thewater-based extraction processnow used could not separate theoil and the sand.About 80% of the oil sands inAlberta are buried too deep forsurface to open pit mining. Aprocess called Steam AssistedGravity Drainage (SAGD)

recovers this oil. Using drillingtechnology, steam is injected intothe deposit to heat the Oilsandlowering the viscosity of thebitumen. The hot bitumenmigrates towards producing wells, bringing it to the surface whilethe sand is left in place.

The upgraded bitumen productconsists of naphtha, light andheavy gas oils that are combinedto produce light sweet oil.

Denso North America Inc.recently completed a pipeline innorthern Alberta in which DensoProtal 7200 was used to coat theweld areas of a 24” Fusion BondEpoxy coated mainline. DensoProtal 7200 was chosen for itsexcellent performancecharacteristics, ease of application, and proven track record.

The surface was first prepared bygrit blasting to clean, near whitemetal finish, SSPC-SP 10 / NACENo. 2. Because the applicationwas done in the winter months, the girth weld was heated withan electric induction coil to 100Degrees Celsius. The DensoProtal 7200 was then rollerapplied at pipe temperature of80 Degrees Celsius to a nominalthickness of 30 mils. Because ofthe quick cure time of the Protal7200, the product was curedbefore the surface of the pipereturned to ambient temperature. The welds were checked forholidays before the pipelinewas buried.

Denso Protal 7200 used for new pipeline application. The main industry in the province of Alberta, Canada is oil and gas.It makes up about 60% of the local economy. Although most oil isextracted through the conventional drilling process, there is also ahuge deposit of a product in northern Alberta. This product isknown as Oilsand.

Denso Protal 7200 is applied above the weld area of thepipe, prior to being spread out over it with a hand roller.

Densoband Used To Seal NewConcrete Servicing Area JointsAt RAF Waddington

Sealing Mastics - Jointing Asphalt to Concrete Surfaces

Densoband, a polymer modified bitumen strip, has been used as ajoint seal on a new aircraft servicing platform at RAF Waddington,Lincolnshire.

The 4,000m2 concreteplatform has been constructed byRMC Surfacing Ltd of Sheffield, who applied 430 linear metresof Densoband around its edgesto seal the joint between theconcrete and the asphalt standingarea and runway.

Densoband is approved by theDepartment of Transport in theManual of Contracts 7th Edition

for use in asphalt wearing coursejoints for asphalt and asphalt toconcrete interfaces as analternative to the traditional hotpoured bitumen. Unlike itsbitumen alternative, Densobandcovers the whole depth of thejoint face giving a muchsuperior seal and its flexiblecomposition makes it able toabsorb a reasonable amount of

thermal and mechanicalmovement without cracking.Because the joint stays intact, water, salts, pollutants and weedseeds etc cannot penetrate it andit remains unaffected byextremes of temperature and therapid joint deterioration thatcan follow freezing and thawingweather cycles.

Easy to apply and flexible, the picture shows howDensoband follows the contour of the joint with ease.

Denso SeaShield Series 100System Protects Hadrian Bridge

Corrosion Prevention - Marine Piles

As part of a major refurbishment programme for the Hadrian RoadBridge, North Tyneside Council has approved the use of SeaShieldSeries 100 System for improved anti-corrosion protection ofthe bridge piles.

The work has been carriedout by civil engineeringcontractors Edmund Nuttall, whohave installed the SeaShieldSystem to protect 49 of the mostexposed bridge piles.

When the bridge was built inthe late sixties the piles wereprotected with a 50mm concretejacket. Edmund Nuttall engineershave removed this concretejacket before applying the DensoMarine Piling Tape followed by

the SeaShield jackets.Denso Marine Piling Tape is a

cold applied petrolatum basedtpae for application under waterand is a key component of theSeaShield systems. The SeaShieldjackets, which protect the tapefrom mechanical damage, arefabricated from uv lightstabilised HDPE. They arefastened into position witheither non-corroding bands orthreaded fasteners.
