Welcome! Well done for taking the first step to find out more about the alkaline diet and why it is so important to keep your body in acid/alkaline balance. In a nutshell, the alkaline diet (also known as the pH balance diet, alkaline ash diet and acid alkaline diet) is a healthy eating lifestyle based on eating foods that metabolise (burn) to leave an alkaline residue (ash) of minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper, which help to maintain your blood at its necessary pH of 7.35 – slightly alkaline. Dr Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in the 1920s for discovering that Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment. When we take steps to alkalise our body, through eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables, then the results are great health, prevention and even reversal of disease, as well as weight loss and anti-aging. Foods are classified as alkaline, acidic or neutral according to the pH of the solution created with their ash in water. Acidity and alkalinity are measured using the pH (potential of Hydrogen) scale. The pH scale spans from 0 to 14 with 0 being the most acidic, 14 the most alkaline and 7 as neutral. 1. Sunlight & Deep Oxygenation Oxygen is our number 1 most important need. Make sure you get high quality air and breathe deeply. Our cells need a lot of oxygen to produce ATP (Adenosine triphosphate, the ‘molecular unit of currency’) to fuel us. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for discovering that the no.1 cause of cancer is a lack of oxygenation in cells. Cancer cannot thrive in an oxygenated (alkaline) environment.

Deep breathing oxygenates your body and stimulates your lymphatic system, important for good immune function. Sunlight provides us with vitamin D, which we cannot make ourselves. The sun’s light and energy is a mood- lifter, a regenerator and plays an important part in great health (in moderation). Possible Benefits:

• Feeling more calm and stress-free • Increased immune function • Better skin • Weight loss • Less aches and pains

2. Pure Hydration Most people are chronically dehydrated and don’t even know it, until it’s too late. As a rule of thumb, a small inactive woman needs about 2 litres of pure water per day and a man needs around 3 litres. Drink much more when you exercise.

Everything that goes on in our body requires water. Lots of things dehydrate us – air conditioning, eating cooked food, bodily processes – digestion, sweating. You should have clear urine throughout the day – all day every day. If your urine is not clear, you are dehydrated and must drink more pure water. Possible Benefits:

• Better mental clarity • Good bowel function – no more constipation • Better skin • Appetite regulation – not overeating • Serious disease prevention • Anti-aging

3. Sleep & Balancing Rest Great sleep is essential for the health of our brain and nervous system. Many people have sleep problems that can be easily rectified with some good bedtime regimes. 8 hours sleep+ is optimal – there are no awards for needing less sleep.

Have good bedroom and sleep environment: NO electrical equipment in your bedroom such as a TV, LED alarm, stereo, phone etc. Turn of your home WiFi at night, it disrupts sleep.

• Better skin • A leaner waist – less cortisol being produced by your body, which

4. Living Alkaline Foods The alkaline pH balance diet is concerned with working in harmony with our bodies’ requirements for healthy functioning and prevention of disease – namely, keeping blood pH at its optimal, slightly alkaline range of 7.35-7.45. This is achieved by eating foods that create an alkaline ash when metabolised by our bodies and limiting foods that create an acidic ash. NOTE: It has nothing to do with stomach acid or even the pH of foods in their physical form. For example, lemons are acidic in their physical form but alkaline-forming when metabolised by our bodies. “You are what you eat” – Victor Lindlahr, Nutritionist “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” – Hippocrates Have lemon juice in hot water upon waking for an alkaline boost and a liver-cleansing effect.

5. Eliminating Acidic Toxins

Disease thrives in an acidic environment. Balance your diet to a more alkaline one and disease cannot thrive. Keep acidic foods to no more than 30% of your total daily calories. Acidic foods to reduce or eliminate include: Caffeine, meat, dairy, soda drinks, artificial sweeteners, GM foods (modified maize, modified corn etc), refined sugars and oils, any artificial additives, colours, flavourings (any chemical name which does not sound like a food), alcohol, drugs.

You also need to look at what you put ON your body (skincare and beauty products) and use in your home (cleaning products) – use natural products without harmful chemicals.

6. Movement & Posture We are designed to move! Aerobic exercise is great for your muscles, lymph system, cardiovascular health and blood pressure. Prioritise walking outdoors in the mornings.

Good posture aids spinal alignment and breathing. Possible Benefits

7. Positive Mindset & Emotions

Being positive enhances all aspects of your life, including health and makes you more resilient to everyday stresses. Positive mindset means that you have a positive expectation that things will turn out well and that you will succeed. It gives you more courage to try and persist with good diet and lifestyle changes than if you had a negative mindset.

This is not about embracing the ‘positivity movement’ or post-modern ‘all truth is relative’ flakey and intangible beliefs (in fact the opposite) – it’s about knowing you are created by God (faith in Jesus helps with that) and being able to ride the storms in life by taking firm and consistent positive action.
