The Exalted Ruler’s Message

The Lodge Soccer Shoot was held at Leddy Park on September 29th. We had 104 shooters. We had seven shooters who were eligible to go to St. Albans for the State Soccer Shoot on October 12th. Ben Silver was the winner of Boys (10-11) group and is eligible to shoot in the Regional Soccer Shoot representing our lodge in Windsor, Conn. on November 8th. Our District Deputy Tom Maloney and our State President Kyle T, Brown III made their annual inspection/visit to our lodge on October 11th. As part of the DD inspection requirements we performed an initiation of new members. We initiated 8 new members.

With the announcement of Charles Munson’s retirement as Lodge Secretary at the end of November, nominations for his successor were opened at the October 16th lodge meeting and will remain open until November 6th. The election of our new secretary will take place at the November 6th meeting, with the installation being at the first meeting in December. November is Veteran’s Month. Remember a VET and thank them for what they have done in the past and what they are doing today for us. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live the way we do today. GOD BLESS THE VETERANS.

Fraternally Yours,

CHAMPLAIN VALLEY FAIR: ANOTHER YEAR OF FUN AND HARD WORK! The 2008 CVF was another year of bringing a lot of good, hard working Elks together. Without the hard work of all the volunteers this year at the Fair it would never have gone as well as it did. The set-up, manning the booth for ten days, and the clean-up went extremely smooth. There are days before the Fair to prep. Paint, clean and organize. Bringing supplies to the booth and getting all the equipment up and running for a long ten days takes some time. Then we have to find volunteers to run the booth for those ten days! Sign-up goes up on Family Day and usually fills up very fast. Three shifts a day with two shifts on the last day. After all that...don’t forget clean-up! Cleaning all the equipment and storing all the sup-plies that are left over and a complete cleaning of the booth for winter. Finally we have to winterize eve-rything. This usually adds up to about 80-100 volunteer hours for set-up, 1000-1100 volunteer hours to run the booth for ten days, and 30-35 hours to close the booth. That is not including any large projects

done at the Fair. That is a tremendous amount of volunteer hours. I would like to THANK YOU for all the time you were able to give to one of the largest, single most volunteer events we have. We even have a few volunteers that take vacation time from their jobs to help me at the Fair. My right hand man and “Little Buddy” Exalted Ruler David Blankemeyer, “Grill Master” Trustee Jim Procopio, and “All Around Man” PER Al Peake. A special thanks to the three of them!

Once again I THANK YOU ALL. This is a wonderful showing of what Elkdom is all about. Hope to see more of you next year. Check with any of the volunteers and they will tell you what a great time they had. Gary Little, PER, Trustee

BITS & PIECES

• My sincere apologies to the readership for the lack of Bits & Pieces last month. My wife says I was being a brat. I guess it’s back to anger management classes for me. • Roland LeBlanc is leaving the Lodge after seven years work-ing in the kitchen with me. His sunny disposition will be missed. Please join me in wishing him success in any and all of his fu-ture endeavors. • I would like to address a serious matter that many people may not be aware of. Certain individuals here at the Lodge have been receiving anonymous poison pen letters for over a year now. I would like to plead with the person writing these letters to seek professional help. Whoever you are, you clearly suffer with seri-ous psychological problems. This behavior must cease immedi-ately. You will be horribly ashamed when you are exposed, as you are bound to be. Many of us already suspect we know who you are. You masquerade as a friend, but you clearly are not. Get Help! • I have a few observations about what it is like to play Bingo. Whenever someone hollers Bingo, and grins victoriously, every-one else in the room immediately hates this person. Always. This is probably because everyone in the room is just waiting for one more number and has let their hopes get unrealistically high. Some Bingo players are hard of hearing, and some are hard to keep quiet. Buying multiple tickets does no good. If you have 6 tickets going it only means you must concentrate harder, and when that insufferably cheery old lady yells Bingo, you are wait-ing for six numbers, and are that much more annoyed. (I’ll have to ask my anger management counselor if she has ever played this frustrating game). • Bill and Julie (the squirrel people) were saying they had not yet turned on their heat. Julie does not feel it is warranted. Bill was complaining about how cold his house was in the morning. I think it’s his flatlander roots showing through. Hang in there Bill. Spring is right around the corner. John Plunkett

Bar Bingo Join in the fun every Saturday night at

6pm (new time). You will also get a chance to win $1000! Meals will be served as well.

C’mon...a little dab’ll do ya!

THANKSGIVING DAY BAGS

Once again Burlington Lodge will share our bounty with those less fortunate than ourselves by helping in our annual Thanks-giving Day Food Drive. This is our 7th year of doing this project.

Bags will be available Nov 1st till

Nov.23rd on a table in the bar area as you enter. There will be a list of suggested items on a sheet attached to the bag, but you may substitute any items you want. Instead of filling a bag you may opt to just give a gift card to a local market such as Hannafords, Shaws or P&C. Please drop your bags off in the coat room no later than Nov 23rd.

We hope each member will help make

someone else's holiday just a little more enjoyable! Remember - Elks Care, Elks Share.

Veteran’s Recognition Luncheon

We are looking for volunteers to assist in the kitchen and with serving and clean up - please sign up on the volunteer board in the bar.

ELDOES UPDATE

“Be the Best of Whoever You Are!”

The Eldoes are holding our Annual Holiday Bazaar on Sunday, November 2. We thank all who attend for their support. This is one of our biggest fundraisers, which enables us to continue our financial support of local charities. Once again - thank you.

November Birthdays: Jan Bossi, Marilyn Luchini, Mary McMaster,

Yvette Poulin, Pam Senesac & Debby Stapleton

Happy Birthday to all! If you come to a steak night during the month of your birthday,

you will receive $5.00 off your meal. A foliage/shopping trip was held on October 9 with 40 partici-

pants. We certainly ended up with a beautiful day. There was terrific peak foliage scenery (after I threatened the bus driver) with stops at the Quechee Gorge and shops, lunch in W Lebanon, important stop at the NH liquor store and a final stop at King Arthur Flour in Norwich. I would like to thank Bea Sylvia and her golfing buddies, the Eldoes, Elks and friends who made this possible. We will be planning an-other excursion soon with the many great suggestions given to me on this trip.

Other dates to keep in mind: 11/22 ......Meeting 11:30am at the Elks 12/14 ......Partners in Adventure holiday social outing 2-4pm 12/16 ...... Eldoes Holiday dinner 6pm (Eldoes please call me if

you plan to attend 862-8878) 1/20 ......Potluck dinner 7pm

Happy Thanksgiving to all and their families – see you in December.

Sincerely, Linda DeLaricheliere, President
