Over the past few decades, China’s rapid economic growth has caused severe environmental problems, creating tremendous challenges and opportunities for environmental chemistry researchers. The biennial National Conference on Environmental Chemistr y (NCEC) was initiated by the Environmental Chemistry Professional Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), with a mission to exchange ideas and share research findings in the field,facilitate
innovation and promote environmental chemistry education in China. Since its debut in 2002, NCEC has served as the premier forum for Chinese scholars to present their latest research in environmental chemistry, and explore potential cooperation with domestic and international research communities. The past NCECs were held in Hangzhou (2002), Shanghai (2003), Xiamen (2005), Nanjing (2007), Dalian (2009), Shanghai (2011), Guiyang (2013), and Guangzhou (2015).
Taking “Innovations in Environmental Chemistry and Sustainable Development” as its theme, this year’s conference is to be the largest in NCEC history. Over 6,000 participants are expected to attend 41 sessions, offering more than 3,000 oral and poster presentations. The program is more comprehensive than ever, organized under five tracks: 1) Monitoring and Analysis; 2) Toxicology and Health; 3) Air, Water, Soil, and Solid Wastes; 4) Special topics in Environmental Chemistry; and 5) Young Professionals Symposium and ACS Publication Forum.
The 9th NCEC is to be held in Hangzhou, a well-known tourist city with a history of over 2,200 years. The city is known as “Paradise on Earth”, featuring numerous places of cultural and historic interest. It has gained global attention after successfully hosting the G20 Summit in 2016.
