ASTHMA

Page 3: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Characterized by inflammation and constriction of the lungs’ main

airways, an asthma attack may be triggered by smoking or exposure

to secondhand smoke.

Atherosclerosis

Page 5: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Atherosclerosis occurs when plaque accumulates on the inner

walls of blood vessels. Plaque can clog blood vessels, which may

eventually result in a heart attack.

Bronchitis

Page 7: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Bronchitis – inflammation of the lungs’ main air passages – reduces air flow to and from the lungs and causes heavy phlegm production.

Emphysema

Page 9: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Emphysema occurs when tar in cigarette smoke causes irritation

and reduces elasticity in the lungs’ alveoli (air sacs), causing continual

shortness of breath.

Fetal Damage

Page 11: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of stillbirth,

miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and sudden infant

death syndrome (SIDS).

Gum Disease

Page 13: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Caused by plaque between teeth and gums, gum disease can lead to

tooth decay and tooth loss. Smokers are at increased risk for

developing gum disease.

Heart Attack

Page 16: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Smoking reduces oxygen in the blood, adds to the artery-clogging process, and increases the heart rate and blood pressure. These

effects can lead to a heart attack.

High Blood

Pressure

Page 18: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Nicotine increases a smoker’s heart rate and narrows arteries, contributing to high blood

pressure, a condition that can lead to a stroke or fatal heart attack.

Lung Cancer

Page 20: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Smoking causes more than 85% of all lung cancer cases. Lung cancer

is often not detected until an advanced stage, intensifying the risk that it will spread to other

parts of the body.

Osteoporosis

Page 22: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Low bone mass and progressive bone loss characterize

osteoporosis. There is a direct relationship between smoking and

decreased bone density.

Premature Aging

Page 24: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Research shows that smoking may cause hair loss, prematurely gray

hair, and damage to blood vessels. It can also cause premature

wrinkling of the skin.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Page 26: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

Rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic, debilitating condition, occurs when

the body’s own immune system attacks joints and organs, causing

painful swelling.

Stroke

Page 28: The ABCs of Smoking HEALTH EDCO a division of WRS Group, Ltd

A potential cause of paralysis, brain damage, or death, a stroke occurs

when an artery in the brain becomes clogged or bursts.

Smoking causes hardened arteries, high blood pressure, and clotting

problems, all of which can result in a stroke.
