2nd volume of Iziko’s African Natural History Journal appeared.

National Mutual Building at the time of amalgamation of Iziko

The Iziko access project for people with disabilities

The oldest historical buildings of Cape Town involved in the project:

William Fehr Collection & Good Hope Gallery block at Castle of Good Hope

The city’s old Burgherwacht & Town House of the 1750s on Green Market Square, exhibiting the Michaelis Collection

Rust-en-Vreugd townhouse of the 1770s Old Slave Lodge of the 1810s Koopmans-De Wet House of the early 1800s Bo-Kaap Museum of the early 1800s National Gallery of the 1930s

Expected outcomes of Project

Michaelis Collection: new toilets, hand-rail and lift proposed and approved

National Gallery: lift to new library area approved

Rust-en-Vreugd: new lift and toilet facility approved

Slave Lodge: new lifts and toilet facilities approved

Koopmans de Wet House: new lift and toilet facilities approved

Bo-Kaap Museum: new ramp approved

William Fehr Collection: initial proposals rejected; further proposals rejected by respected architectural consultant; meeting with Castle authorities to take place to resolve impasse

Current status of project

Final drawings are being prepared by the architects for the buildings which have approved disabled access plans

Tender documents will be prepared for advertisement in early 2008

The authorities responsible for the Castle will have to decide on the appropriate way forward with regard to disabled access to this historic building

Strategic Goal 5: Unlock the educational potential of Iziko, and promote and innovatively showcase our arts, culture and natural history

Iziko Education Programmes

In 2006/7 Iziko Education and Public Programmes attracted over 198 000 visitors

Opening of the exhibition Separate is not Equal by the Ambassador of the USA at Iziko Slave Lodge

Opening of the Exhibition Breaking the Silence by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela at Iziko Slave Lodge

In addition to the acclaimed ‘Picasso and Africa’, Iziko hosted 33 new exhibitions during 2006/07

Hand of Fatima Exhibition at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum

Santu Mofokeng exhibition at Iziko SA National Gallery

Rainbow of Hope - exhibition to create Aids awareness, Iziko SA National Gallery, 1 Dec 06
