The Advantage e-News Welcome May! What a great month when everything is turning green, spring flowers are popping up and buds are beginning to burst with warm weather exuberance! Things are also bursting here at the Chamber and all over town! There is just so much going on—don’t ever believe someone who says ‘nothing ever happens in Merrill’! We are so excited and very hard at work with our new website that will debut later this month. It is brighter, fresher and most importantly userfriendly. Everything will be easy to find, there will be advertising opportunities and an opportunity to have your own webpage. This will be great for businesses who do not have a webpage or for those that want to advertise special events, coupons or specials. And most importantly you will have a password to go in and change your own page as often as you wish. The new webpage will still have all the things that you like such as a calendar of events, weather and news. But it will also have its own tourism section so that we can tout all the great things there is to do in and around Merrill. And speaking of tourism, the 2015 numbers are in about tourism in Lincoln County. Total tourism business sales in Lincoln County during 2015 was $83.6 million, an increase of 2.03% from 2014. Direct visitor spending in Lincoln County was $53.2 million in 2015, an increase of .67% from 2014 and visitors to Lincoln County generated $5.6 million in state and local taxes during 2015. And in 2015 Lincoln County saw a 1.2% increase in room tax revenue. Once again these increases are due in part to the very aggressive advertising that we do in travel guides, maps and travel magazines. We already know that we will see an increase in this years numbers due to our Discover Wisconsin episode and being named the 3rd Most Charming River Community in Wisconsin by Discover Wisconsin and Travel Wisconsin. And I believe that the new website with its own tourism section will also be a boost for tourism too! During this time of year we are also busy working with the school district and seeing firsthand how wonderful our students are. We just finished coordinating the high school interviews and our volunteers performed mock job interviews with more than 100 seniors. All I can say is WOW, we have some very impressive kids moving on to all levels of higher ed and/or training programs. Thank you to the educators for engaging these young people. On May 20 we will be kicking off our 20/20 Program with PRMS 8th graders. This program is the Chambers workforce development program for young people. It is named 20/20 because the first class we are working with will be graduating in 2020 and 20/20 also means clear or perfect vision. The goal is to showcase many different jobs in Merrill with hope that following post high school education that the students will come back to Merrill to raise their families. The school district has broken the students into 16 different Career Clusters based on their aptitude and interest. Thanks to the employers in Merrill we will be able to send the students out for talks/tours on May 20 in 14 of those career clusters. We also plan to find mentors for a handful of those students to follow them through high school. It will be interesting to see if their job areas change and if so why? The 20/20 Mentoring Program will also be a great follow up piece to the upcoming 8th Grade Exit interviews. These interviews are also a lot of fun as the students show you their middle school portfolios and explain what they believe high school will be like, what type of career they want and tell you what classes they believe will be needed. If you have never taken part in the 8th grade or high school interviews, be sure to sign up for next year. You will want to do it year after year! This has been the season for groundbreakings. In just the last month we took part in the groundbreaking for the long awaited Nortrax. What a great company! We also held the groundbreaking for Kindhearted Home Care’s new building on Mill Street. How exciting that this small business has grown in just a few short years to the point that they need a larger facility all their own. We look forward to their ribbon cutting this fall. Congratulations Diane! The Sawmill Brewery has finally opened and kicked off with a Chamber Day before the officially public opening. What another great boost for Merrill and it is busy all the time! These are Merrill people, making Merrill grow. Congratulations Stan! We just announce our partnership with the Wausau Chamber to take part in their very successful Young Professionals program. If you live in Merrill and are between the ages of 2145, then this just might be the vehicle you are looking for to network with others all over the central Wisconsin region. Currently there are 2500 members, so consider joining this fast growing program today. Our 38th Annual Chamber Golf Classic is coming up on June 6. This fills up quickly so be sure to get yourself or your team registered today. It is always a great day of networking with awesome food and great prizes all donated by members like you! Plans are now underway for our 2nd International Friendship Tour to Scotland and Ireland. The dates of the trip are April 112, 2017. Consider joining us for this fun, networking opportunity. And of course the summer season is about to kick off. We salute all of our military and will remember those no longer with us on Memorial Day. The new grandstand is completed and the rodeo arena is being installed along with other improvements. Watch the calendar for the Rodeo, the new Antique Tractor Pull and of course the Lincoln County Fair! Debbe Chief Executive Officer 105 Years 1911– 2016

The Advantage e-News

Welcome May! It is brighter, fresher and most importantly user‐friendly.  Everything will be easy to find, there will be advertising opportu‐nities and an opportunity to have your own webpage. And speaking of tourism, the 2015 numbers are in about tourism in Lin‐coln County. And in 2015 Lincoln County saw a 1.2% in‐crease in room tax revenue.  Once again these increases are due in part to the very aggressive advertising that we do in travel guides, maps and travel magazines.  We already know that we will see an increase in this years numbers due to our Discover Wisconsin episode and being named the 3rd Most Charming River Community in Wisconsin by Discover Wisconsin and Travel Wis‐consin.  And I believe that the new website with its own tourism section will also be a boost for tourism too!  During this time of year we are also busy working with the school district

and seeing first‐hand how wonder‐ful our students are.  We just fin‐ished coordinating the high school interviews and our volunteers  per‐formed mock job interviews with more than 100 seniors.  All I can say is WOW, we have some very im‐pressive kids moving on to all levels of higher ed and/or training pro‐grams.  Thank you to the educators for engaging these young people.  On May 20 we will be kicking off our 20/20 Program with PRMS 8th graders.  This program is the Cham‐bers workforce development pro‐gram for young people.  It is named 20/20 because the first class we are working with will be graduating in 2020 and 20/20 also means clear or perfect vision.

The goal is to showcase many different jobs in Merrill with hope that following post high school education that the stu‐dents will come back to Merrill to raise their fami‐lies.  The school district

has broken the students into 16 different Career Clusters based on their aptitude and interest.  Thanks to the employers in Merrill we will be able to send the students out for talks/tours on May 20 in 14 of those career clusters.  We also plan to find mentors for a handful of those students to follow them through high school.  It will be in‐teresting to see if their job areas change and if so why?  The 20/20 Mentoring Program will also be a great follow up piece to the upcoming 8th Grade Exit inter‐views. In just the last month we took part in the ground‐breaking for the long awaited Nor‐trax.  What a great company!  We were so pleased to finally welcome them to Merrill and we look for‐
