A combined approach by major landholders is expected to be recommended for private development of Hungerford Railway Station precincts area. An open meeting addressed by consultant Lisa Jackson and attended by
representatives from Hungerford Town Council, Hungerford Town and Manor, West Berkshire Council (Hungerford District Councillors David Holtby and Paul Hewer), Hungerford Chamber of Commerce and others discussed development on Wednesday, April 18 and Cr Roger Thompson reported on the meeting to Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee.

ROYAL COUPLE IN SALISBURY
This summer Holy Cross Church in Ramsbury is launching a project to restore their 200 year old historic pipe organ. It has provided wonderful music over the years but is in need of some TLC. To help raise the £120,000
needed, a series of four concerts featuring a wide variety of instrumental and sung music is planned. The fi rst is on Monday 14th May at 7-30pm. The Lyra Ensemble from St Petersburg will give a recital of Russian classic, church and folk music.

Sir: A very good photograph in The Adviser, and what a clever (title): it will motivate me to write more on town council history. To add to the immediate information on dates Ron Tarry was mayor 1975 to 1978 and 1987 to 1988 and I served as mayor 1978 to 1981, 1990 to 1991 and 1999 to 2000 and before the mayoral offi ce was created in 1974, I was Parish Council Chairman from 1965 to 1969; same job but different title. LETTERS TO EDITORThames Water FiguresSIR:I was interested to see the Thames Water wrap-around feature in the Friday 20 to 27th edition. The comment that “After the driest two year since records began” is not factually correct for Marlborough and perhaps not for Hungerford which is just down the road, but it might be for the Thames Water region as a whole. I assume that they were referring to the years of 2010 and 2011.My weather station, consisting of professional equip-ment, has data going back to 1984. 25th April 2012: Mr William Shand M.D –“A Man that looks on Glass” Hungerford Historical Association was given an ex-cellent talk on the history of stained glass by William Shand, a retired Consultant Surgeon from St Barts Hos-pital, took the title of his talk from a George Herbert poem “The Elixir”. Mr Shand suggested that the only way to view stained glass properly is by looking through binoculars so that all the details of the windows can be appreciated. In addition to the magnifi cent windows in Canterbury and York Cathedrals he highlighted several churches that should be visited:- Fairford, Gloucestershire which is the only church in England with it’s original glass; All Saints Church, Tudeley, Kent which is the only church in the world to have all it’s twelve windows by Marc Chagall; The Chapel of St Anthony at Oundle School, built as a memorial to the fallen of WW1 with the win-dows designed by John Piper and made by Patrick Reyntiens; St Andrew’s Church in Kimbolton, Cam-bridgeshire which has the only window in England de-signed by Tiffany.The next talk will be given by Roger Day – “Savernake at War” on Wednesday, 25th May 2012 at 7.30pm-Shelagh Parry
CHILTON SCHOOL FETE TO INCLUDECHILDREN OF UPSALA CIRCUSChilton Foliat Primary School will host the Children of Upsala Circus on July 7 as part of the school’s annual fete.The fete will open at noon with a circus theme and and at 5.30pm there will be a hog roast and circus entertain-ment.The 10 children will come from St Petersburg and will be on a cultural exchange visit to the UK.The children will share their amaxing skills and relate thei lives in Russia.Local businesses and individuals are invited to become involved and to sponsor elements of the fete or donate raffl e prizes.Upsala Circus began in 2000 and is a social programme for underprivileged children from St Petersburg area. The 50 members of the circus are aged from six to 20 who are offered an alternative to street life. their confi -dence is built through the matery of circus skills such as juggling, acrobatics and mime so building their confi -dence on the journey into society.
