COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT DELAYEDHungerford’s John O’Gaunt Community Technology College expansion plans have received a set-back through lack of funding and the project is on hold until 2013/14 fi nancial year. The school is planning a music, drama, learning resource centre and sixth form facilities.THERE’S A RUN AFOOTPlans are under way for a Hungerford run as part of HADCAF. Cr Benneyworth told the Hungerford Town Council’s recreation, amenities and war memorials committee hat the run would receive publicity.

CHAMBER TO HELP WITH CARNIVALHungerford chamber of Commerce is expected to take over running Hungerford’s annual carnival.Hungerford Round Tble told a recent chamber meet-ing that Round Table no longer had the manpower or resources to organise and run the carnival.Chamber chairman Nigel Perrin told the meeting that Neale Marney had agreed to chair a carnival com-mittee comprising members of Round Table and the chamber.Concern has been expressed that the carnival dates may clash with the Marlborough Jazz Festival which drws many people from Hungerford.

HOLDING THEIR HEADS HIGHThe team from Perfectly Posh Hair Design are holding their perfectly styled heads high after a trip to the English Hair & Beauty Awards, where they might not have won, but were the only salon to reach the fi nals in four categories.“We were in amazing company,” said owner Krysia Eddery. “It was an incredible event at the Midland Hotel in Manchester and the awards went to well-known salons which were much bigger than Perfectly Posh and considering it was the votes of our client’s that led us to the fi nal we are still very proud.“Those votes also saw the salon reach an unrivalled four of 14 categories in the fi nal – Hair Salon of the Year, Women’s Stylist of the Year, Junior Stylist of the Year and Colour Technician of the Year. No other salon achieved this!“It has been great for business too, we have had so many new customers coming in since we were nominated and they all mention the English Hair & Beauty Awards; this has led to us taking on new, bigger premises in Hungerford sooner than expected.

“We are moving just a few doors up Hungerford High Street in September and the new salon will be fi tted out in the coming months and will see us more than double in size, from four chairs to nine – and this is happening sooner because of the support of our clients sending us to the premier hair and beauty awards.”Pic: Krysia Eddery (far right) pictured with the Perfectly Posh team at the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

NEWBURY HAS TASTE OF WORLD LEADING TECHNIQUENewbury district ballet supporters on May 16 were treated to an outstanding performance of La Fille Mal Gardee fi lmed directly from the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. The performance through Royal Opera House Cinema was beamed live to Newbury and many other cinemas throughout the world.Members of the audience commented that the perfor-mance was so good and clear that it was better than being at Covent Garden. The new technique supported by the Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Arts Council England is expected to revolutionise ballet throughout the world. The performance seen in Newbury was superb.

Wildlife Trust puts on moo-vellous day out at Lower Moor Farm. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is throwing open the farm gate for a free family event at Lower Moor Farm nature re-serve as part of the national Open Farm Sunday week-end. Come and have a go at foraging for wild food, watch hay making demonstrations using equipment from scythes to tractors; learn all about fl y fi shing on our sce-nic lakes; join guided wildlife walks, and visit the stalls and displays. You can try your hand at pond dipping and see what turns up on a minibeast hunt. And when you’ve done all that you can enjoy the BBQ and feast on some of the best burgers and sausages you’ll ever taste made from the Trust’s very own cattle and sheep. You can even wash it down with apple juice from the Trust’s orchards. Both meat and juice will be available to buy on the day. Open Farm Sunday is the farming industry’s annual open day organised by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). LEAF promotes environmentally re-sponsible farming. It helps farmers produce good food, with care and to high environmental standards, and can be identifi ed in-store by the LEAF Marque logo. “Wiltshire is a great farming county and the role that farmers play is pivotal to the wellbeing of wildlife. We have our own substantial farming operation and this

family day will give you the chance to explore how we strike a balance between farming and conservation,” says the Trust’s Reserves Manager Neil Pullen. “It’s a chance for you to listen to the birds, soak up the stunning scenery of Lower Moor Farm’s three lakes, ponds, brooks and wildfl ower meadows, and really get in touch with the land that feeds us,” he adds. (Lower Moor is the gateway to three neighbouring Trust Re-serves – Clattinger Farm, Oaksey Moor Farm Meadow and Sandpool Farm). The walks will each feature a different focus. One will look at amphibians and dragonfl ies. Another will take in the wildfl owers and butterfl ies in the meadows (in-cluding orchids). The third will explain farming sys-tems, and take a look at the orchards and bees in the hedgerows. And the fourth will walk around recently restored ponds and veteran oaks. The Wiltshire Amphibian and Reptile Group will set up a viewing point to the grass snake hibernaculum and run a reptile walk, peeking under tiles to see what reptiles are enjoying the warmth. “This is your chance to get out on a farm and ask us questions about how food is made, what impact this has on wildlife, and to connect with your food and the landscape around you,” says Neil. For more information contact: Neil Pullen (01793) 814768, email [email protected] Getting to Lower Moor FarmFrom Oaksey go in the direction of Somerford Keynes, cross the railway line and follow an S-bend. Immedi-ately after the S-bend the entrance is on the right. From Cricklade on the A419, turn left onto the B4696 towards Somerford Keynes. Continue straight over crossroads until you see the entrance on your left. There is parking at the visitor centre.
