There is a growing tide of public opinion in favour of improving rail services on the main West Country line through Kintbury, Hungerford, Great Bedwyn and

Pewsey.Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee

members on Monday heard an outline from a frequent rail user John Willmott of Eddington who has launched a group titled HURT (Hungerford Users of Rail Transport).

Mr Willmott said there was hardly a week went by on the Hungerford line when something did not go wrong.

He said he was putting together a list of interested people and 40 were already signed up.

Bedwyn rail users’ group was highly organised and very helpful, he said.

There was already a long list of complaints from rail users, one of which was that there were no direct trains from London to Hungerford after 6.35pm.

TIDE OF OPINION GROWS FOR BETTER RAIL SERVICES

He is also addressing the electrification of the main line between Paddington and Newbury with pressure to extend to the West Country.

Monday’s meeting projected close co-operation with Cr Alana Wilson who has already obtained nearly 900 signatures to a petition for electrification of the line.

The issue has also been strongly taken up by Member for Devizes Claire Perry and by Bedwyn rail users.

Information may be provided to the highways and transport committee and Cr Wilson through the town council office on 01488 686195.

More than 100 people attended what was described as Hungerford’s most successful annual town meeting on Thursday.

The outstanding success was noted by former mayor and long-time councillor Jack Williams whose municipal service has spanned more than 60 years.

Main points of the meeting were that the town was in good hands and its finances sound.

District Councillor Paul Hewer said Hungerford was setting an example to the rest of the country in dificult times. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane, emphasising the slogan Hungerford, Heart of the North Wessex Downs said the municipal leaders were doing their best to promote Hungerford and to retain the town’s character.

ahead of schedule. There was an exciting plan for an artisan village at Garden Art. Footpath work was due in Priory Avenue, the area outside The Three Swans Hotel and the old Catholic church. Cr Richard Hudson said there was growing pressure from West Berkshire Council for Hungerford to take more homes and up to 250 were contemplated. Railway station area regeneration would provide an attractive gateway to the town and parking matters were being addressed.

Holy Trinity Church, Wonston, was packed for the service of thanksgiving for the life of Nina Alice Hilary (Lady Bearsted) on Tuesday.

Lady Bearsted who was 91, died on March 4th.In her later life, she resided at Bearwater, Hungerford

before living at Sutton Manor, Sutton Scotney.She was a great attender of Marlborough Summer

School and in 2000 wrote the following poem:Silently, slowly, darklyThe moonlit river flowsFrom whence has it come?No one here really knows.The hoot of an owlThen an anguished howlfrom a fox caught in a snare,Can I stay, do I dare?No, farewell my riverI shall see you no more.

My football was also enjoyable and in winning the Hungerford Cup in 1951 against Kintbury when reports indicated almost 2000 people

attending showed the attraction of Hungerford resident players in a local match.

Incidentally, I think only Harold North, Ray Cox and myself survive but then it is 61 years ago.

Sporting activity came to an end with need to build a house. A plot of land in Parsonage Lane offered by Stephen Neate, my parish council chairman, meant 18 months’ hard work and with only a very old concrete mixer as mechanical help, but it was certainly worth it and it would never have happened without the supervising help of my late father-in-law Bill Cox.

I must mention as I did at the reception, whilst digging across Parsonage Lane to literally find the sewer only one car was stopped, so different today as the lane is usually filled with cars. To be continued...

Hungerford Town Council’s Highways and Transport committee is investigating establishment of bus shelters at appropriate Hungerford sites.

Those mentioned are opposite The Sun Inn, outside the library, Priory Road and Atherton Crescent. Fears were expressed at Monday’s committee meeting for exposure to vandalism. It was also suggested that local tradespeople should be involved in construction. West Berkshire Council will be asked for guidelines including planning requirements.

Marlborough’s Finance and Policy Committee meeting on Monday was speedily despatched by Chair Cr. Andy Ross. Councillors received the

interim internal audit report, from Auditing Solutions Ltd, which “raised no significant issues and required no formal recommendations”. Cr. Ross commended Sue Fry and team, thanking them for the extra work put in to maintain the smooth running of the council, particularly in the absence of a town clerk for several months. He also thanked Town Clerk Shelley Parker for her excellent report on the committee’s current projects.

Cr. Ross presented the accounts, stating that he was not expecting any surprises before the financial year end, next month. The Town Clerk is going to look into the business rates charged by Wiltshire Council for the town’s cemetery and a small building on the site, with a view to obtaining a revision of the rates.

A war has been declared on non-native invasive species! You may not even have realised that we are being invaded. Such is the devious nature of our enemy. Help is at hand with Avon’s Army of Volunteers, but we still need more brave souls ready to fight the scourge of invasive species on our river.

This dedicated, if disparate, group gathered its troops recently at Salisbury’s Guildhall to draw up their battle plans. Avon’s Army of Volunteers includes representatives from parish councils, landowners, charities such as Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts and even a representative from Bristol Zoo.

This project funded by the Environment Agency as part of their commitment to restore rivers, both physically and for water quality.

Leading the attack, Sam Stork, of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Source to Sea project said “Over the past months, local landowners have been helping us to reconnoitre, gather intel, and generally spy on our enemy, the invasive species. And now that we know who they are, and how many there are, we are ready to take the fight to them. We will fight them in the river. We will fight them on the river banks. We will not rest until the River Avon is cleared of non-native species again. This is our finest year. 2013 will go

down in history as the year that Britons helped their wildlife fight back.”

That intel – collected over 300km of the river - resulted in over 2000 records of harmful, non-native species currently invading our stunning river. It must be stopped before our wildlife suffers irreparable damage. That’s why Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts are asking you to volunteer. Help us to fight these invaders. Come out and work along our river, its tributaries, chalk streams and waterways. Be part of our Avon’s Army of Volunteers and turn back the tide of the invaders. They do not fight with guns, but with sweat, with gloved hands and waders on their legs.

So far, 65 brave souls have stepped forward, representing parish and city councils, landowners, anglers, government bodies such as Natural England and the Environment Agency, the business community and ordinary people who care about the River Avon.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Sam Stork ended saying “This is our last chance. We either fight for the Avon or we lose part of our natural heritage that is currently struggling to survive. Like any good Army, we have a solid plan of action. What we need now are the troops, the volunteers to come out and help us fight.” -Kelly Barnett

ROUNDABOUT DISCUSSEDHungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee believes a roundabout at the TESCO and High Street intersection may not be necessary. The committee discussed the roundabout suggested by various townspeople, at Monday’s meeting. A safer pedestrian crossing is also being considered.
