The Adviser, Friday, August 19 to 26, 2011

As a child, I had an unusual education in having attended fi fteen different schools before I was ten years old. That arose from the fact that after World War 1 ended, in 1918, my father, who remained

a serving Army offi cer, was posted to many different places and my mother and I went with him. One of them was Aldershot, Hants, which gave me the peculiar claim to have been educated at a girl’s convent. This was a famous convent called Hillside, in nearby Farnborough, which, in those days, ran a small preparatory school for boys. I clearly remember being shown by a nun how to make the Sign of the Cross by numbers and being told by another that my eight-year old soul was like a white sheet that had been spattered with black ink! (I wonder how she would describe it now?)

My serious education did not begin until 1923 when my father was axed from the Army in a Government savings drive (just as is happening now) and set up home in the market-town of Darlington in Durham on its southern border with North Yorkshire. After being given a fi ne start at a primary school, I won a scholarship to the local Grammar School where the staff were so dedicated that they inspired me, scholastically, and gave me a taste for acquiring knowledge that became almost pathological.

In those days, the stories in most schoolboy magazines were based in boarding schools and we all knew about Eton College and the strange garb of the pupils but, far from poking fun at it, as seems the current trend provoked by some politicians, most of us would have been proud to have been there. It was common knowledge that many of the nation’s most distinguished leaders had been educated there, acquiring their drive and determination not only in the classroom but ‘on the playing fi elds of Eton’. (David Cameron is the 19th Old Etonian Prime Minister!)

I learned a bit more about Eton, which had been founded in 1440, when, after securing an honours degree in science in 1935, I spent a year at London’s Institute of Education to qualify for a Teacher’s Diploma. (There was a joke

– with much truth in it - stating that ‘Those who can - do. Those who can’t - teach. And those who can’t teach - teach education’). However, I remained relatively ignorant about what was widely regarded as Britain’s fi nest school until the 1970’s when my eyes were opened by fi rst-hand experience. As has been so common in my professional life, it was my interest in spies that did it.

In 1951 a disreputable, though intelligent, member of the Foreign Offi ce, called Guy Burgess, had revealed that he was a Soviet agent by defecting to Russia where, it transpired, he nostalgically wore his Old Etonian tie, having been a pupil there. In 1970, or thereabouts, the proprietor of my newspaper, Sir Max Aitken, had been approached by the then headmaster to ask me if I would give a talk at Eton about spies in general, with no holds barred concerning Burgess. Traditionally, while many boys attended the morning service in the historic chapel there, they were given the choice of attending ‘The Alternative Assembly’, which was a talk given by a visiting speaker in a large hall. I was happy to oblige..

I was even happier when I was invited to spend the previous evening and night as a guest of one of the Housemasters and to have dinner and breakfast with some of the senior boys, when we discussed many subjects. In that short time, and during my address, I was unforgettably impressed by the quality of the staff and pupils and by whole ambience of the college. So, when sour-grapes left-wingers pour scorn on a great British institution, at least one old grammar school boy vigorously responds ‘Floreat Etona!’.

BUILDING DEMOLITION IN HUNGERFORD PT II

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY

Continuing with our town of Hungerford and its disappearing buildings

I left the readers in the railway station, so now down to Park Street. Remembering that the Station Road car park was once large gardens attached to the banks and there were large greenhouses attached to the

Three Swans Hotel back down lower Park Street. The demolition of Oaks offi ce and workshops now replaced by Williams Court, into Church Street, noting the disappearance of the shops of Barnards & Bartholomew and that this stood as an ugly gap in the High Street for many years. Then most signifi cantly the car park where once stood the 5 storey mill that was James & Co. This burnt down in June 1980, lets not forget the old gents’ toilets that stood on the roadside on the rear entrance to the Corn Exchange.

Proceed along Church Street into Smitham Bridge Road, Garage Services disappear and this was built on the site of the Old Wessex Electricity store sheds. Then the massive changes with James Mill demolished for the 2nd time, and then Davidson & McClean Engineering and the, oh dear for me, the sad demolition of the whole range of the Chilton Electric buildings and opposite the old stable buildings which were used by Chilton Engineering, this whole area at the western end of the town turned into houses.

To the top of Church Way (in my youth this hill was always called “Dog Hill”) stood the Regent Cinema a haven for fi lm goers for almost 50 years, to the top of the High Street and St John’s Mission Hall and of course Dods Nurseries and its greenhouses and fi nally returning to the eastern edge in Park Street. The demolition of the workhouse/hospital, a building I have written on in the past and fi nally in Fairview Road, Macklins Dairy Cowsheds, where the cows were driven down from the common to be milked. I won’t attempt to paint a picture of all the changes in the shop trades and ownerships, but please let me know if you want me to list these.

tea and hope a number of the ladies will be dressed in 1930s style. The Berkshire WI Chairman will be attending together with past members.

The Hungerford Arcade is also hoping to have a window display of the Hungerford WI from the 1930s to the present day. -Shelagh Parry

HUNGERFORD WI CELEBRATES 80TH BIRTHDAY WITH PARTY

Harvesting is well advanced in Marlborough and Hungerford area and results are generally better than expected earlier in the season.

Veteran farmer David Liddiard told the The Adviser that winter barley has been going up to 3.4 tons to the acre and wheat to 4.1 tons in chalk areas

He says the harvest is well advanced with modern machines able to deal with up to 120 acres a day.

While crops on chalk ground are satisfactory, most have failed on gravel ground and malting barley would be short along with grass and sileage.

HARVEST COULD BE BETTER THAN EARLIER EXPECTED

WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNINGTo the Editor -

As you may already know, here at Macmillan Cancer Support we are currently in the process of promoting our fl agship event, World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September 2011.

We hope to get as many people as possible from Wiltshire to register to hold their own event in the coming months. I have attached an offi cial poster for the event as well as a press release describing what it’s all about – would it be possible for your publication to print one or both in an upcoming edition?

Any help and publicity would be greatly appreciated and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

HUNGERFORD CLEAN-UP SUGGESTIONSHungerford Town Council’s Recreation, Amenities and War Me-morials committee will seek clean-up work at the entrances to Hungerford, St Saviour’s area, the skatepark, Triangle Field sur-rounds and Bridge Street war memorial.

Just a quick up date following on from the Retailers Meeting last month.

Road Works – High Street still due to fi nish week ending 30th July (as per Wales & West yesterday), we will see! There are a further fi ve weeks of disruption to follow at the Southern end of the High Street, opposite Atherton Crescent, at some point. We are still awaiting a date on this and Nigel Perrin is keeping on top of this and as soon as this date is know it’ll be passed on.

Tourist Information – First the boards on the library, Jenny Booth has been doing a lot of work getting the details, contacts etc and a meeting is taking place on August 11th to attempt to get Hungerford information on them, so we’ll update you asap.

Anthony Buckwell will be Chairing a working party which is a joint venture between the Chamber of Commerce, Town Council and Town and Manor looking at improving tourist facilities’. However in the meantime the Chamber and Sugar Mouse have joined “forces” (must be a better word, but can’t think of it!) and will be providing a Tourist Information Point in Sugar Mouse. The space to accommodate this is being provided free of charge and the Chamber are providing and funding the display fi xtures and signage. So what we need now is as much information as possible to put there, if your a B&B/Hotel etc please do supply us with any advertising material you have (tourist will have access to the phone in Sugar Mouse to check vacancies etc). Basically any information that is Hungerford related is most welcome, if you can’t get down to the shop just let me know and I’ll collect the info’ later this week. It’s planned to have this up and running by the end of this week for the start of the main tourist season.

Welcome for Hero’s – Robert Johnston is currently on holiday, updates will follow asap.

Just for your info – for those that haven’t yet heard the planning application for the budget hotel has been granted on appeal – Ben Blake

RETAILERS MEETING UPDATE

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR JOG

Hungerford’s John O’Gaunt Community Technology College has received national recognition, headteacher, Neil Spurdell reports in the school’s

magazine.Mr Spurdell said: “It is extremely important that the school

is recognised within the community and has the support from Hungerford locals in particular, but recently, we received national recognition for the improvements that we have made at John O’Gaunt. On the strength of last year’s GCSE results, we can now proudly boast to be the most improved secondary school in the South East from 2009 - 2010 and, perhaps even more impressively, the most improved school covering an even greater region over the period 2007-2010. This is testament to the hard work of the students and staff we have within the school and having made such enormous strides, we are determined to maintain and build upon the levels we have reached”.

HUNGERFORD WELL OPEN FOR BUSINESSHungerford trade is hoped to return to normal after many weeks of disruption through essential gas works in the main street.Traffi c lights were removed on Thursday night and normal fl ow resumed. About six traders are reported to be seeking compensation for busi-ness they allege was lost during the works.
