One recent employment advert produced 20 CV’s. “You’re wiser in the Adviser!”

A report from the International Baccalaureate Association has praised the links forged between the IB students at St John’s School in Marlborough and the local community.

The students’ involvement in volunteering with community groups and charities was described in the report as “meaningful, and with signifi cant outcomes”.

The IBO report followed an audit of Sixth Form students’ Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) activities, which form an integral part of their IB Diploma studies. The authors praised St John’s for its consistent and well-structured CAS programme, commenting that “a broad and interesting range of activities are available in which students can participate, many of which require a welcome level of involvement within the local community”.

As part of the Service element of the two-year programme all IB students participate in a range of community-based activities which frequently make a real difference to the effectiveness of community groups and charities. Some students choose to spend many hours volunteering at a favourite charity, some organise and run fundraising events, and others are involved in a range of smaller projects.

Many organisations have benefi tted from IB student volunteering, including The Bruce Trust, a disabled boating charity based in Hungerford, the Prospect Hospice, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, local Scout and Brownie groups, and Savernake Hospital.

Continued from page 7 ... In addition, students have been involved in activities including putting

on a production of Terry Pratchett’s Mort to raise over £1,200 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, charity bag-packing for Save the Children, helping the Marlborough Lions Club with their annual Christmas Santa Sleigh fundraiser, taking part in the Prospect Hospice Starlight Walk, and organising a fundraising evening for the Marlborough Brandt group.

Additionally, students have helped out at a wide range of events, including the Marlborough Literary Festival, the Marlborough Royal Wedding tea party, the annual primary schools Drama Day in West Woods, and the British Legion 90th Anniversary fundraising day.

Gary Paterson, IB Coordinator at St John’s in Marlborough said:“I am pleased to see that the Review acknowledges St John’s as a

shining light of how education can and should engage with its community. The International Baccalaureate Diploma encourages students to step outside their comfort zone and take part in activities that are often fun, but can also be challenging for the students. Year after year I have seen how involvement with the wider community not only benefi ts local people, but also helps our students to grow into confi dent adults and valuable members of the global community”.

The IB Diploma is an internationally-recognised alternative to A-levels. Students study six subjects over a two-year course, with an additional requirement to complete a minimum of 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) activities in order to achieve their Diploma. -K. Hunter

ST JOHN’S STUDENTS TRAMPOLINE SUCCESS

Continued ... The seven St John’s students who ranged in age from 11 to 17 have

trained in close partnership with seven younger students from Rushall, Preshute and Great Bedwyn Primary Schools, and Great Bedwyn School was successful in reaching the Southern Zonal Finals which take place in January 2013.

All the students are coached at Marlborough Leisure Centre by Juanita Davenport and Laura Davenport, both Teaching Assistants at St John’s. Laura Davenport and St John’s student Rosie Mulholland have also recently qualifi ed as British Trampoline Judges and acted as competition judges at the event.

Laura Davenport is delighted with the success of the students and said “The students did amazingly well, particularly because they competed against students who train at trampoline clubs several times a week, whilst our students train only once a week at a recreational level. All our students showed exceptional team work, support and encouragement to each other and displayed true sportsmanship to fellow competitors. We are very grateful to the support and encouragement shown by Dan Webb, the Marlborough Leisure Centre Manager”.

The results were as follows:Under 11 Girls NoviceSophie Bolland (12th), Charlotte Kelstrom-Page (13th), Freya Wharton

Action for the River Kennet and Thames Water are working in partnership to help Kennet residents save money on their water and energy bills this New Year.

Continuing with the ‘Care for the Kennet’ campaign, our fi tters will be visiting three of our local villages in January to offer residents a free water saving home makeover worth up to £150. From the 7th to the 11th of January our Engineers will be visiting homes in Chilton Foliat.

A number of free devices are on offer, from shower timers to kitchen tap fi ttings to dual fl ush loo adaptors. These can help reduce water use by up to a quarter, without reducing your water pressure. Homes that take advantage of a water-saving makeover, follow water-saving advice, and have a water meter could save up to £85 a year on their combined water and energy bills. ARK will be holding an information stand at Chilton Foliat village hall on Wednesday the 9th of January between 10am and 2pm. Please come and talk to us to fi nd out more.

Although there is plenty of water in the river at the moment, adapting your home now will help protect the river during the next dry spell.

A typical water saving makeover takes up to 30 minutes and is

carried out by an approved fi tter from our partner Climate Energy. Climate Energy fi tters will be coming door to door in Chilton Foliat, Ramsbury and Aldbourne during January. However if you’re a Kennet resident outside of those areas you can book a Free water saving makeover by calling 0800 3586665 and quoting ‘Kennet’.

So if you’re feeling the pressure from rising bills this January, help take the pressure off your pocket and off the river at the same time. Talk to our Engineers if they come to call or telephone 0800 3586665 to book your free water-saving makeover today.

HUNGERFORD FAREWELLS GWYNNETHHungerford farewelled the loyal and hard-working Gwynneth Bullock at her funeral service in St Law-rence’s Church on Monday.

ROTARY RAISES £2041 FOR CHARITY Hungerford Rotary Club raised £2041 for charity and polio eradication funds at a supper provided by The Plume of Feathers in The Corn Exchange on Friday. 126 guests were entertained with West End songs. Club president Nick Fritz is already planning a St George’s Day supper in April. - James Brown

HUNGERFORD COACH PARK DISCUSSIONHungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee’s has discussed a coach park in Charnham Street. The park would be at the current bus stop oppo-site The Sun Inn and would involve several extra park-ing spaces, the mayor, Cr Martin Crane said. The meet-ing also heard of a proposal for a coach park at Cobbs Farm and feeling was that if Cobbs wished to develop a coach park, they could consider it.

STATION PRECINCTS PROGRESSDELAYEDTwo over-riding factors appear to be delaying progress of Hungerford’s railway station precincts development. These factors were again aired at a recent meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee.Firstly, the council needs a decision from Network Rail on the station boundaries and “ransom strip” alleged to be hindering progress.Secondly the council needs assurance that the rail ser-vice will be maintained when tenders for the service are sought next March. The meeting was told there was no guarantee that rail traffic would continue to expand if the service was re-duced to a “shuttle service” from Newbury when elec-trification of the line between Paddington and Newbury was implemented.A special council committee was to meet on Wednesday to discuss the rail service. Delegates from Hungerford, Kintbury and Bedwyn were mentioned but there was no mention of Marlborough from where there is under-stood to be concern from people who use Bedwyn and Hungerford railway stations in preference to Swindon.

“MORE POSITIVE HOUSING APPROACH”Hungerford Town Council was looking to a more positive approach to housing development within the town, the mayor Cr Martin Crane told the last council highways and transport committee meeting. He said there were areas within the town that could contain housing and moves were under way to appoint a pro-fessional consultant. He said overall involvement in a local development plan would be too costly for the council.

I am delighted to report that last night’s ‘Movies & Musicals’ night organised by The Rotary - Youth Op-portunities Committee was a huge success – in many more ways than merely funds raised for Rotary Chari-ties, although as you will see from the attached spread-sheet we have raised over £2,000.00 surplus! (Subject to all ticket monies having been paid) Everyone who attended was treated to a magnifi-cent performance by West-End performers, Jayne O’Mahony, John Langley and Andrew Sackett. The Boeuf Bourguignon, buttery mashed potato and broc-coli served up by Rotarian James Weir of The Plume of Feathers was truly magnificent – and almost every-one came up to specifically say so! Served with fresh crusty French sticks and butter with lemon cheesecake and coffee to finish – All this followed by an enthusiastic part II perfor-mance with audience participation and the most rous-ing selection of song tunes including Bond theme ‘Di-amonds are forever’ If you weren’t there then you really did miss out – and you should be really disappointed, you would have loved it – as those who came will surely tell you!!

This is just a quick note to say that the resurfacing of the A4 Charnham Street was completed on Friday night and some of the road markings were replaced on Saturday. Unfortunately, the wet weather prevented completion of the white and yellow lines, so the contractor will return as soon as they have a dry day. There will shortly be a post-completion inspection of the works and any defects will be rectified by the contractor. We will also be sending a satisfaction questionnaire to residents and businesses later this week. Many thanks to everyone for your patience during this major project. If anyone has any queries, please let me know.
