Bespoke Wooden Floors
Hungerford Jewellers have opened at 129 High Street (between the Prospect Charity Shop and the Kebab House).
Penny writes; “We have spent the past six weeks renovating the premises and they now look good with some very useful space. We have been lucky enough to have the services of great contractors who have my thanks for a job well done.
I established Thatcham Jewellers in 1983 and we have grown well in reputation over the years and become a family business with my son, Peter Richardson, and ex husband also working in the two shops. We are covering both shops between us all - to share the expertise and we have our other staff also fully involved.
We hope to cater for most customer needs in Hungerford with our range of product offering which is from a few pounds to several thousand and every price range in between. Our stock includes, but not exclusively, new female and male jewellery, watches and clocks, Christening gifts and secondhand jewellery. We do our own buying from quality companies with whom I have been dealing over many years and choose a mix of very different and contemporary stock. Our repair service for watches and jewellery should provide a local convenience for Hungerford folks and the battery and strap service we offer is usually “while you wait” which we fi nd customers generally prefer.
We are looking forward to getting to know our customers and becoming part of Hungerford life - to make a start we have joined the Hungerford Club and I will be joining the Chamber of Commerce as soon as I can - now we are open for business. Already we have had lots of good wishes and positive comments from visitors to the shop - people are very supportive and friendly and I hope we will not disappoint! Best wishes: Penny”.

Special Victorian Evening Feature by the Hungerford & Marlborough Weekly Adviser
Now in it’s 20th year the Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza is an annual event organised by the Hungerford Chamber of Commerce, and the Extravaganza committee, and continues
with its original aim of being a “thank you” to the local community for supporting local businesses throughout the year. The event is wholly non-commercial and is funded solely by donations from local businesses and other organisations. This year the major sponsor is once again ADP, who are generously contributing over twenty percent of the total required and along with another large donation from The Town and Manor of Hungerford have seen the fundraising off to a good start. The event costs in the region of £12,000 every year and most of this comes from donations made by the local business community, many of them small independent retailers and it is heartening to see that even in these recessionary times that many are willing to support the largest event in the town’s diary.
So what happens of the day? It starts at 8am with a breakfast, provided by the Three Swans Hotel, on the Town Hall Steps for invited dignitaries who turn out in full Victorian dress, generally in freezing conditions and to the bewilderment of passing motorists. This is followed by the judging of the hotly contested ‘best shop window’ display later in the day. Around midday the attractions start to arrive and set up and by 5pm the town is alive with steam engines, organs, side stalls, street entertainers, the big wheel and other fairground rides. Come 7 pm the parade starts at the north end of the town and works it way along Bridge Street and the High

Street, led by a Scottish pipe band. At 9 pm the, evening’s activities will be brought to a close by the Firework Finale once again sponsored by Sovereign Housing Association. For those not wishing to return home just yet the town’s many pubs and restaurants are busy well into the night.

The upkeep for the Grade II listed town hall in Marlborough is £60,000
per year, whether it is open or not. Using an innovative plan, some councillors are suggesting that the town hall could now become a focal point for the community. The plan is to upgrade facilities, to relocate council offices plus a local/visitor information area, provide access to modern toilets and much more. Improved facilities could attract well known performance companies to increase the entertainment on offer. Not only could local people benefit, but visitors would be encouraged to spend more time in town, thus helping to increase revenue that the Marlborough area relies on.
Can we afford to upgrade? The Public Works Loan Board provides loans for such schemes
and most councils use this route for capital projects. “The town council have to constantly dip into their funds, in a never ending game of catch up with this lovely old building. If the project went ahead, there would be a chance to plan a maintenance programme for the future, whilst also creating some revenue streams”, says Town Clerk, Liam Costello. The current offices would be rented out for a start, but there are many other ideas.
The main question from the public has been “Will it put up our council tax?” Cllr Guy Loosmore who is leading the project assures people it will not. Leaflets which are being delivered to every household, contain more detail.
Have Your Say The four day exhibition and consultation in the town hall
plus leaflets, ensure everyone is included and can have their say. Alternatively you can visit the town council website at marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk/consultation An application for planning permission will have to be made, that will only happen if there is sufficient public support and will provide further opportunity for comment. Guy Loosmore added, “It would be sad if we continued excluding the public from their building, whilst they pay for the upkeep. I want to see it brought to life and used daily as a vibrant focal point for the community and its visitors, not just kept as a beautiful white elephant”. -Val Compton

Although Hungerford started well and had some early chances, Mangotsfield took the lead from a Jon Boardman own goal when he deflected a shot from Marcus Duharty past Stuart Wood and
the visitors always looked likely winners thereafter. Duharty made it 2-0 after 39 minutes when he turned a cross from Karim Rendall into the net and when Peter Macklin was harshly sent off early in the second half Hungerford’s fate was sealed.
Rendall made it 3-0 after 54 minutes as the visitors continued to dominate and a great 35 yard shot from Matt Day to make it 3-1 was merely a consolation for Hungerford as they slipped down to 4th place in the league table.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS WORKED BY MAGIC
At a fun packed and well a t t e n d e d
Marlborough evening, the Christmas lights were once again switched on. Father Christmas entertained many spell bound children, who were kept busy with activities whilst they waited. The huge mural of Santa with his reindeer proved a hit. Downstairs in the town hall it was the grown ups who were fi nding much enjoyment amongst the craft market stalls.
The Ramsbury Tea Company encouraged calm, Whimsy & Thyme products smelled wonderful and there was exquisite kiln formed and stained glass from Jeannette Therrien, pottery, wood carving and so much more.
The evening was not without its hitches and Alexander Kirk Wilson, The Mayor who is rumoured to be Marlborough’s answer to Boris Johnson, manfully struggled to make himself heard, without a microphone, on the steps of the town hall. Nevertheless, the new citizen of the year was announced as Jeremy York, to the applause of the crowd.
The Mayor – after some frantic pleas for an absent electrician – found the lights indeed worked by magic. As the crowd counted down from ten, the High Street lit up on cue.
It was an evening of fun, goodwill and fund raising. Marlborough College manned a huge cake stall, which raised an amazing £490 for the Oldies’ Christmas Lunch. -Val. Compton

Chilton’s Best Quiz EVER !Chilton Foliat’s village hall committee hosted its best ever quiz night with numbers reaching 54 a fantastic attendance to the event. As well as familiar neighbours and friends, teams from Aldbourne WI and Lambourn came along to swell the numbers.Under the eyes of quiz master Peter Camfi eld the teams used every inch of their ‘little grey cells’ to solve the questions put before them but the team that took the prize was members of Chilton’s own Chicks Toddler Group, who won a meal for two at the Palm restaurant, grateful thanks go to PC rep Gary Crumpler for secur-ing the prize. The half time hot supper that was made by the committee members and their spouses was very well received and following a 100 Club draw three hap-py members have a little extra for Christmas.Chairman Liz Outridge was delighted to announce that not only was this the best ever quiz night in the hall but it raised in excess of £300 for hall funds, which is a wonderful achievement. “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey”.Over 150 members and guests of the Hungerford His-torical Association were treated to an excellent talk by the Countess of Carnarvon on her latest book which tells the story of Lady Almina, who was married to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Lady Almina established a hospital for wounded offi cers at Highclere during the First World War. She nursed the offi cers herself and “treated them like the best people in the world”. Dur-ing her research Lady Carnarvon found a number of personal letters from servicemen and their families in the Castle’s archives. One read “thank you for all you did for my son – my husband got to his bedside before he died” The 5th Earl was a keen photographer and took a great many photos during his14 years excavating in Egypt with Howard Carter. The tomb of Tutankhamun was found in 1922 just before the Earl’s money ran out. A number of artefacts from the tomb are housed in the museum of Cairo, and there is also a collection if items at Highclere. Her talk was full of very humorous anecdotes dealing with larger than life characters. A really excellent eve-ning enjoyed by the audience. The next talk will be given by Canon Alan Deboo “The Railways and Society in Victorian England” on Wednesday, January 25th 2012 at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford -Shelagh Parry

The ADP Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza
Now in it’s 20th year the Hungerford Victorian Extrava-ganza is an annual event organised by the Hungerford Chamber of Commerce, and the Extravaganza com-mittee, and continues with it’s original aim of being a “thank you” to the local community for supporting lo-cal businesses throughout the year. It starts at 8am with a breakfast, provided by the Three Swans Hotel, on the Town Hall Steps for invited dignitaries who turn out in full Victorian dress, generally in freezing conditions and to the bewilderment of passing motorist. This is fol-lowed by the judging of the hotly contested ‘best shop window’ display later in the day. Around midday the at-tractions start to arrive and set up and by 5pm the town is alive with steam engines, organs, side stalls, street entertainers, the big wheel and other fairground rides. Come 7 pm the parade starts at the north end of the town and works it way along Bridge Street and the High Street, lead by a Scottish pipe band. At 9 pm the, eve-ning’s activities will be brought to a close by the Fire-work Finale once again sponsored by Sovereign Hous-ing Association. For those not wishing return home just yet the towns many pubs and restaurants are busy well into the night.

26th October 2011: Dr Hugh Pihlens – “From Latvia to Hungerford”Over a hundred members of the Hungerford Histori-cal Association were treated to an excellent talk by Dr Hugh Pihlens last Wednesday night. Dr Pihlens was a very popular and highly respected GP in Hungerford for all his professional life but his talk focused on his family links with Latvia. His grandfather had been a Latvian nationalist revo-lutionary in the early 20th century and had to escape in the hold of a German cargo ship from the Russian police and their bayonets. Eventually as a non-English speaking Protestant refugee he arrived in England and was befriended by a Church of England vicar and given employment and sanctuary by the vicar’s family. He met and married an English girl and they settled down in the West Country where Dr Pihlens was born. A wonderful story much appreciated by the audience, a lot of whom resolved to research their own family his-tory.The next talk will be given by The Countess of Car-narvon “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. -Shelagh Parry
MARLBOROUGH THEATRE’S GREAT LINE-UPThe Theatre on the Hill, at the heart of the new St John’s school on Granham Hill in Marlborough, is now in its second season and thriving, This Autumn and into 2012 the theatre is offering with a full and varied pro-gramme of events appealing to a broad cross-section of the local population.Well-known names, including BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards double winners Show of Hands, described by The Independent as “a class act”, and a touring West-End style show Let’s Do The Twist are certain to attract large audiences, although the top selling show this Au-tumn will undoubtedly be the St John’s student produc-tion of Thoroughly Modern Millie. The 350-seat theatre is growing in popularity among a diverse and eclectic range of theatre companies and performers from across the UK, as well as providing a venue for performances and events for local communi-ty groups. In addition to school productions including Thoroughly Modern Millie, the star turn of the Autumn Season is perhaps Let’s Do the Twist on 14 October. The West End-style show, described as “electrifying” showcases music from the greatest musical stars of the 1950s and 60s Rock ‘n’ Roll era wrapped up in a Happy Days family style feel. This hugely successful show has already been snapped up by Impresario Bill Kenwright for a week at the Theatre Royal in Windsor. Kate O’Connor, Events Organiser at St John’s, expects this to be a sell-out evening. “We are very lucky to have been able to get a date in Marlborough on their tour. I’m sure it is going to be a fun fi lled, lively evening”Other highlights of the season include a 2010 BBC Ra-dio 2 Folk Awards double winners Show of Hands on 26 October, organised by Marlborough Folk Roots as part of a tour which culminates in a sell-out concert at the Royal Albert Hall in April next year. The phenom-enally popular duo Steve Knightley and Phil Beer hail from rock backgrounds but today their engaging music dips and dives through roots, rock, blues, country and traditional genres to make an unmistakable signature sound played out on a wealth of instruments from slide guitar to mandocello, fi ddle to South American cuatro.Theatrical performances include the highly acclaimed Icarus Theatre Collective with their bold and exciting performance of Macbeth, Shakespeare’s most bloody and fear-fi lled tragic “Scottish Play” on 16 November and Proteus Theatre Company’s Arabian Nights on January 27, a magical journey to the Far East in the company of Scheherazade.

LETTER TO THE EDITORPLIGHT OF THE VULNERABLESir: Following Mr Durie’s letter regarding the action of Great Bedwyn Parish Council regarding the treat-ment of the most vulnerable people in the village, I would like to have the opportunity to reply on behalf of the tenants. If Our Parish Council is so concerned and had any understanding of the needs of the tenants of The Knapp, then why have the most vulnerable of this vil-lage been forced to endure a year of hard campaign-ing just to gain access to their own homes?Wiltshire Council acknowledged and responded to our plight by producing a proposal within three months. A clear indication of how desperate our needs are. It was then rejected by our Parish Council led by Mr Durie. For the sake of displacing just 9 out of the 70+ that park here every day. What justifi cation can there be from the Parish Coun-cillors who are supposed to represent every member of their community.Whilst we are still active in pursuing resolution to our urgent and immediate problem we are also concerned that if this is the start of Localism. The start of Parish Councils taking more responsibility for the needs of the communities they serve, then perhaps it is time to consider the diversity of our Parish Councils. Be-cause from our research it would appear that the only way to challenge them in future will be via the courts. Yet again the most vulnerable will suffer.-Jan Thornton; The Knapp tenants’ Association.
NEW BUSINESSHUNGERFORD JEWELLERS OPENIN CENTRAL TOWN POSITIONHungerford Jewellers have opened at 129 High Street (between the Prospect Charity Shop and the Kebab House).Penny writes; “We have spent the past six weeks reno-vating the premises and they now look good with some very useful space. We have been lucky enough to have the services of great contractors who have my thanks for a job well done.I established Thatcham Jewellers in 1983 and we have grown well in reputation over the years and become a family business with my son, Peter Richardson, and ex husband also working in the two shops. We are covering both shops between us all - to share the expertise and we have our other staff also fully involved. We hope to cater for most customer needs in Hunger-ford with our range of product offering which is from a few pounds to several thousand and every price range in between. Our stock includes, but not exclusively, new female and male jewellery, watches and clocks, Chris-tening gifts and secondhand jewellery. We do our own buying from quality companies with whom I have been dealing over many years and choose a mix of very dif-ferent and contemporary stock. Our repair service for watches and jewellery should provide a local conve-nience for Hungerford folks and the battery and strap service we offer is usually “while you wait” which we fi nd customers generally prefer. We are looking forward to getting to know our customers and becoming part of Hungerford life - to make a start we have joined the Hungerford Club and I will be joining the Chamber of Commerce as soon as I can - now we are open for business. Already we have had lots of good wishes and positive comments from visitors to the shop - people are very supportive and friendly and I hope we will not dis-appoint! Best wishes: Penny”.
LETTER TO THE EDITORLONG TERM SOLUTIONS NEEDEDRoger Durie’s letter implying that Wiltshire Council has not taken the lead to protect Great Bedwyn’s vul-nerable elderly and disabled residents is disingenu-ous. That the Parish Council, led by Mr Durie, are pursu-ing a plan to lay white lines in preference to yellow ones, which are not only unenforceable but will do nothing to protect access, speaks volumes about the lack of understanding of the needs of the elderly and disabled – the most vulnerable in our village. I feel there is a lack of desire to solve the problem as a matter of urgency. Other long term solutions need to be found to prevent and address other parking issues in the village in addition to those experienced in The Knapp. Yours etc. Anthea Rogers, 6 CopyholdGreat Bedwyn.

The controversial extension plan is being debated by ratepayers throughout Marlborough.Val Compton said in public question time she hoped most people would have the good sense to bin the anonymous and mostly fi ctiticous information be-ing circulated around town by a person or group too cowadly to put their name to it. She asked if the town council would ensure that, however much of the plan went ahead, to at least have the council offi ces relo-cated there, in order the public could reliably access their town hall .The mayor Cr Alexander Kirk Wilson said it was in-tended to make more information available. Docu-ments would be distributed next week after the council had been let down in distribution earlier. Answers to the questionnaire would be analysed. It was intended that council offi ces be contained in the Town Hall complex and would be open daily.Dr John Cooper was assured there would be public consultation sometime in Febuary or March. Dog FoulingIf you are one of the anti-social dog owners who fail to pick up after their dog – watch out – there’s a dog warden about. Should you be caught, the offence carries a fi ne of £80. However, if you are not suit-ably concerned about the fi ne, maybe you could view the problem from another angle. Because, apart from it being indescribably horrible to leave faeces lying around where both adults and children are walking, it could in fact lead to serious illness. It is not only direct contact with faeces that spreads disease, but soil can become contaminated when an infected animal passes roundworm eggs. The eggs are produced in large numbers and have a tough outer shell that can survive for up to fi ve years.Children, who are the most likely to be affected, can-have a range of symptoms from mild to so severe that they can cause breathing diffi culties and even seizures. Although rare, there is also a form of the disease which, if left untreated can result in a child losing their sight. Perhaps that small minority of dog owners who have not yet been converted to picking up after their dog, will consider changing their ways. Poop scoop bags are no longer avaible free of charge but can be purchased at most pet shops. If you have regular dog fouling problem in your area contact Wiltshire Council 0300 4560100. -Val Compton
Diabetes on the increaseAt a recent meeting of Great Western Hospital Founda-tion Trust, members took part in an interesting evening focussed on diabetes. Lack of diabetes education can result in poor outcomes for patients, which may lead to life changing consequences. The short session included some interesting and lively guesstimates of how much sugar was contained in a range food and drink on the ta-ble. There was much laughter amongst members as some of the guesses were a long way off the mark. Members realised most of us would benefi t from increasing our knowledge on this subject. Insulin treatment only commenced in 1922, but diet and exercise continues to be crucial in managing the disease in all cases. It is estimated that three quarters of a million people are walking around the UK with undiagnosed dia-betes. The rising number of obese adults and children is adding to the problem. As resources become increasingly stretched, the NHS is encouraging everyone to learn more about how to stay healthy and thus enjoy a better life. If you have any concerns you should contact your own GP.-Val Compton
ADP EMPLOYEES CLIMBCOTOPAXI VOLCANOThree ADP employees, two from Hungerford and one from South Africa have just returned from Ec-uador having successfully climbed to the top of Co-topaxi, the highest currently-active volcano in the world. Geordie Taylor, Euan Smith and Steve Rob-inson reached the 19,347 feet summit (5,897m) at dawn on Wednesday 21st September having climbed the last 4,000ft through the night. The fi nal ascent is made over the glaciers that cover Cotopaxi’s peak, an almost symmetrical cone. The volcano has erupted more than 50 times in the last 300 years. The ascent over the glacier required night-lights, crampons, ropes and ice-axes. Under the supervision of experi-enced Andean guides, the three negotiated the treach-erous crevasses, ice walls and thin air in wind-chilled temperatures as low as minus-30 degrees-C. ADP has kindly donated £1,000 to Hungerford’s Rotary Club in recognition of their achievements. The same three adventurers reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2008 and kayaked down the Zambezi River in 2010.

Marlborough Town Hall – White Elephant or Community HubThe upkeep for the Grade II listed town hall in Marlborough is £60,000 per year, whether it is open or not. Using an innovative plan, some councillors are suggesting that the town hall could now become a focal point for the community. The plan is to upgrade facilities, to relocate council offi ces plus a local/visitor information area, pro-vide access to modern toilets and much more. Improved facilities could attract well known performance compa-nies to increase the entertainment on offer. Not only could local people benefi t, but visitors would be encouraged to spend more time in town, thus helping to increase revenue that the Marlborough area relies on.Can we afford to upgrade? The Public Works Loan Board provides loans for such schemes and most councils use this route for capital proj-ects. “The town council have to constantly dip into their funds, in a never ending game of catch up with this lovely old building. If the project went ahead, there would be a chance to plan a maintenance programme for the future, whilst also creating some revenue streams”, says Town Clerk, Liam Costello. The current offi ces would be rented out for a start, but there are many other ideas. The main question from the public has been “Will it put up our council tax?” Cllr Guy Loosmore who is leading the project assures people it will not. Leafl ets which are being delivered to every household, contain more detail.
Have Your Say The four day exhibition and consultation in the town hall plus leafl ets, ensure everyone is included and can have their say. Alternatively you can visit the town council website at marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk/consultationAn application for planning permission will have to be made, that will only happen if there is suffi cient public support and will provide further opportunity for comment. Guy Loosmore added, “It would be sad if we contin-ued excluding the public from their building, whilst they pay for the upkeep. I want to see it brought to life and used daily as a vibrant focal point for the community and its visitors, not just kept as a beautiful white elephant”. -Val Compton

Uniform teal coloured polo shirts are on offer plus a bum bag, both bearing the “Voluntary Services Team” logo. The bags solve the problem of where to put belongings such as keys, or jewellery which is required to be removed whilst on wards, as an infection control precaution. Suzanne Bennett, from the Voluntary Team, explains the polo shirts are a very useful form of identifi cation for staff, patients and visitors – as are all hospital uniforms. They save the volunteer from being asked inappropriate questions or having to turn down requests for help that are only suitable for hospital staff to give. It is also easy for Ward Managers to know exactly who is working on the ward that day – even at a glance from the backview.Ailesbury Ward at Savernake Hospital is desperately looking for more help serving refreshments in the mornings or afternoons. Anyone with a small amount of regular time to give should contact Suzanne on 01985 220779 or email her; [email protected] -Val compton
