Hungerford Town council has minuted that no district councillor has attended the past three council meetings. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane said on Monday that his

council wanted a good relationship with West Berkshire Council and non-attendance was unsatisfactory.

Hungerford’s mayor Cr Martin Crane at Monday’s council meeting thanked all who contributed to making The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend an outstanding

success. He apologised for the poor performance of West Berkshire Council’s sound system at the Diamond Jubilee Bridge opening. Cr Roger Thompson said the council should in future hire a proper sound system.

...Continued from page 1.First Class passengers are seated in compartments for up to

six people. Champagne and orange juice is served shortly after boarding, along with teas and coffees throughout the day. Waiting staff will serve home-baked cakes or biscuits on the outward journey and will be happy to take orders from a range of hot and cold food and drinks.

In the Premium Standard coach passengers are seated at tables for four, and there will be dedicated waiting staff to bring passengers unlimited complimentary tea and coffee along with any items bought from the delicious range of hot and cold food and drinks.

Marcus Robertson, Chairman of The Cathedrals Express, commented, “It is always really exciting to bring a steam train to a new route. The interest and enthusiasm from passengers to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train as it thunders through the countryside at speeds of up to 75mph is wonderful. And the idea of travelling in style, being looked after by our friendly and effi cient staff while enjoying superb food and drink, just seems to strike a chord with the public’.

Prices for this wonderful, nostalgic day trip range from £99 - £225 per person, with a 10% discount for group booking of 10 persons or more.

For bookings contact The Cathedrals Express on 01483 209888 or visit the website on www.CathedralsExpress.co.uk

COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT DELAYEDHungerford’s John O’Gaunt Community Technology College expansion plans have received a set-back through lack of funding and the project is on hold until 2013/14 financial year. The school is planning a music, drama, learning resource centre and sixth form facilities.THERE’S A RUN AFOOTPlans are under way for a Hungerford run as part of HADCAF. Cr Benneyworth told the Hungerford Town Council’s recreation, amenities and war memorials committee hat the run would receive publicity.

CHAMBER TO HELP WITH CARNIVALHungerford chamber of Commerce is expected to take over running Hungerford’s annual carnival.Hungerford Round Tble told a recent chamber meet-ing that Round Table no longer had the manpower or resources to organise and run the carnival.Chamber chairman Nigel Perrin told the meeting that Neale Marney had agreed to chair a carnival committee comprising members of Round Table and the chamber.Concern has been expressed that the carnival dates may clash with the Marlborough Jazz Festival which drws many people from Hungerford.

HOLDING THEIR HEADS HIGHThe team from Perfectly Posh Hair Design are holding their perfectly styled heads high after a trip to the English Hair & Beauty Awards, where they might not have won, but were the only salon to reach the finals in four categories.“We were in amazing company,” said owner Krysia Eddery. “It was an incredible event at the Midland Hotel in Manchester and the awards went to well-known salons which were much bigger than Perfectly Posh and considering it was the votes of our client’s that led us to the final we are still very proud.“Those votes also saw the salon reach an unrivalled four of 14 categories in the final – Hair Salon of the Year, Women’s Stylist of the Year, Junior Stylist of the Year and Colour Technician of the Year. No other salon achieved this!“It has been great for business too, we have had so many new customers coming in since we were nominated and they all mention the English Hair & Beauty Awards; this has led to us taking on new, bigger premises in Hungerford sooner than expected.“We are moving just a few doors up Hungerford High Street in September and the new salon will be fitted out in the coming months and will see us more than double in size, from four chairs to nine – and this is happening sooner because of the support of our clients sending us to the premier hair and beauty awards.”Pic: Krysia Eddery (far right) pictured with the Perfectly Posh team at the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

NEWBURY HAS TASTE OF WORLD LEADING TECHNIQUENewbury district ballet supporters on May 16 were treated to an outstanding performance of La Fille Mal Gardee filmed directly from the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. The performance through Royal Opera House Cinema was beamed live to Newbury and many other cinemas throughout the world.Members of the audience commented that the perfor-mance was so good and clear that it was better than being at Covent Garden. The new technique supported by the Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Arts Council England is expected to revolutionise ballet throughout the world. The performance seen in Newbury was superb.

CHILTON SCHOOL FETE TO INCLUDECHILDREN OF UPSALA CIRCUSChilton Foliat Primary School will host the Children of Upsala Circus on July 7 as part of the school’s annual fete. The fete will open at noon with a circus theme and and at 5.30pm there will be a hog roast and circus entertainment. The 10 children will come from St Petersburg and will be on a cultural exchange visit to the UK.The children will share their amaxing skills and relate thei lives in Russia.Local businesses and individuals are invited to become in-volved and to sponsor elements of the fete or donate raffle prizes.Upsala Circus began in 2000 and is a social programme for un-derprivileged children from St Petersburg area. The 50 mem-bers of the circus are aged from six to 20 who are offered an alternative to street life. their confidence is built through the matery of circus skills such as juggling, acrobatics and mime so building their confidence on the journey into society.

CHURCH APPLICATION RECOMMENDEDHungerford Town council’s environment and plan-ning committee on Monday recommended that there be no objection to an application to renew planning permission for Our Lady of Lourdes church and 14 residential units. The committee voted 4/3 after dis-cussion was held on the committee’s original objec-tion based on parking and the size and concentration of units.

CHAMBER BACKS FARMSHOP APPLICATIONHungerford Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting decided to back a plan for children’s facilities at Cobbs Farm just west of Hungerford.Cobb’s Farm’s chairman David Bruce addressed the meeting and outlined planning confusion over his company’s application for permission for a new chil-dren’s play barn.He said Hungerford Town Council had approved the scheme before opposing it.He said his company would continue to seek approval despite an estimated up to £10,000 legal bill. The plan for children’s facilities were much needed and would compliment the farm shop’s adult facilities. The company was responding to demand, he said.At Hungerford Town Council’s meeting on Monday, chairman of the council’s planning committee Cr Jean Hutchins said her committee’s objection was on the grounds that some of the requirements were not within planning guidelines. The meeting was told that a petition had been submit-ted signed by 600 people but did not comply with regu-lations because only one letter had been submitted with the signatures and at least six letters were required. The mayor Cr Martin Crane said the democratic pro-cess should be followed.

RED BINS ON THE HIGH STREETMonday’s Hungerford Town Council meeting was told by the mayor Cr Martin Crane he accepted red sails in the sunset but not red bins on the high street. He said the leaving out of red bins was most un-co-operative.

NO POLICE INCIDENTS AT JUBILEENo jubilee police incidents were reported at Hunger-ford, town councillors were told before their meeting on Monday. PC Claire Drewitt said mobile phone thieves were back in the town and she referred to a scruffy Asian man with a knuckle duster ring on his wedding hand. She said that while Hungerford was generally quiet, Lambourn was really active.

COUNCIL WORKING TO AVOID TRAFFIC CHAOSHungerford Town Council is working to avoid traf-fic chaos in the town during main street re-surfacing in September. The council will consult street residents, Hungerford Chamber of Commerce and is in close liaison with West Berkshire Council’s highways and transport department project team.Highways department officer Neil Stacey told a recent council highways and transport commit-tee meeting the re-surfacing of High Street, Bridge Street and Charnham Street would take three to four weeks and would involve traffic disruption. He said it would be necessary to close the streets to traffic while work was in progress and it was sug-gested that work be carried out in the evenings be-tween 6.30 and 11pm.Concern was expressed that the work be completed before Christmas trading.
