In Hungerford last week I found myself talking with an attractive, charming young lady - as is my wont. And our conversation strayed quickly from a boring exchange
about weather and politics to the state of our military forces, and the army in particular.
Guessing that my career had been associated with the latter she volunteered the information that her great uncle had served as a sergeant with the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, and had been killed, aged 24, in WW2 at the battle of Anzio; and she went on to describe that he had been awarded the Victoria Cross for his “determination, fearlessness and devotion to duty with great gallantry and self-sacrifice”. I also discovered that he had been previously awarded the Military Medal in another action for bravery: thus carrying the title Sgt. Maurice Rogers VC, MM.
Nicola, with whom I had been speaking, went on to mention casually that her father Raymond Portlock, now resident in Hungerford, had served on active service in recent times as a helicopter pilot with The Army Air Corps. I sought a meeting with Ray and was humbled to learn of his distinguished career in recent years as a helicopter pilot in several theatres of war, which led to the award of the QCVS (Queen’s Commendation for Valour), earned for the evacuation of a trainee soldier with his helicopter from dense jungle in Brunei. We acclaim today’s heroes but we must not forget the courageous persons who have distinguished themselves like Ray Portlock.
John Cameron-Hayes served in Palestine and Malaya with an Army Observation Squadron (AOP) flying light Auster aeroplanes in a similar role - thus making this chance meeting in Hungerford so remarkable.

Retirement from Public Life
MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY
I told the assembled guests who were there for my retirement that I was a life-long Methodist following a tradition set by my grandparents and parents, and whilst
church attendance is very reduced over recent years it is a most important part of my make-up. I am the only surviving trustee of the Old Bath Road Wesleyan Church and the demolition of that church and of the Chilton factory site in Church Way have been the only two buildings where I have shed an emotional tear.
Let me now step back to 1955 when I was first elected as a town councillor, an office I held for 45 years ending in 2000 when I suffered an unfortunate heart attack.
I became chairman in 1965 upon the proposal of the late Bert Wyatt, a four year appointment and then when the office of town mayor was agreed from 1978-1981-1990-1991 an finally 1999-2000 a total of nine years in the town council chain. The last year being that of the millenium was a truly exhausting period. I also served for an incredibly long period, actually 28 years as chairman of the finance and general purposes committee and finally to the most enjoyable of recreation as chairman of footpaths, bridges and seats for a very long period.
This article is significant in that Jack Williams is one of three recipients of this year’s Hungerford Town Council Freedom of The Town Awards for outstanding service.

BOOK CLUB MEETING
Hungerford Town Council may have to cut back on its budgeting for the Triangle Field pavilion.
Monday’s council meeting felt that a cost in the region of £150,000 was too high.
The council will await a more detailed cost report before seeking funding.
It has been suggested that the Triangle Field and its pavilion be used by sports other than Rugby.

West Berkshire Council was continuing to work on a solution to a Hungerford Bridge Street pedestrian crossing, District Councillor David Holtby reported to
councillors before their meeting on Monday. He said the previously suggested crossing did not meet the required formula. There has been concern over the safety of pedestrians moving between Eddington and Hungerford town centre.
Hungerford Councillor Terry Harding was welcomed back to the council chamber by the mayor, Cr Martin Crane on Monday. Cr Harding had completed a hike to the Everest
Base Camp and helped to rise £20,000 for charity.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is delighted to announce that they have received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for their Wild Connections
project. The project aims to:Improve accessibility and educational value of our reserves for
visitors so that everyone can connect with and learn about our natural heritage.

Provide conservation-based youth volunteering activities for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Create new ‘Friends of’ groups based at WWT nature reserves across the county.
Wild Connections will focus on 15 of the Trust’s key nature reserves that have been chosen for their proximity to communities, heritage value and capacity to support volunteering and training activities.
The 15 project sites are rich in historical and natural heritage, including features such as ancient hunting sites, wildflower rich meadows, native woodland, chalk downland, medieval terraces and even a WWII airfield.
The Trust’s Development Officer, Caroline Robson, said “We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support. Wild Connections is an innovative and important project to increase and encourage access to our natural environment for everyone, including groups that historically may not engage with the countryside. POLICE REPORT QUIET EASTERHungerford police reported a quiet Easter period to Hungerford Town Councillors before their meeting on Monday. There were three drug charges in their drug crack-down and two burglaries reported in Marsh Lane and Priory Avenue.
PARKING REVIEW THIS QUARTERHungerford’s parking review would begin this quarter and would inclue coach parking in Charnham Street, District Councillor David Holtby reported to council-lors before their meeting on Monday.
Nearly 100 members of the Hungerford Historical Association were entertained to a very interesting presentation on Windsor Castle on the 27th March, by the current Governor and Constable of the Castle, Air Marshal Macfadyn.He explained his role of Constable representing the Queen when she is not at Windsor, but also explained in great detail how the whole of the Castle community came together after the great fi re in 1992 destroyed large areas of the Castle. The restoration and rebuild-ing took just over 5 years at a cost of £37 million and by a combined effort the Castle is now fully back to its place as one of the great iconic buildings that il-lustrates our nation’s heritage and history.The next meeting will be held on Wednesday. 24th April at 7.30pm in Hungerford Corn Exchange when Dr. Hugh Pihlens will give a talk on “Sir Christopher Wren – his life and times”. -SHELAGH PERRY.
