Character Review

Sam Houston • He fought in the second war with England

where he rose to the rank of first Lieutenant. He eventually became a prominent person in the affairs with Texas.

• He became leader of the US forces in Texas during the Spanish- American war. After the fall of the Alamo, he defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto.

William Travis

Travis entered the Alamo in January of 1836, with about 30 men. Eventually that number rose to 180, and he shared command with Jim Bowie.

Travis led the men in defending the Alamo.

William Travis cont. o From – South Carolina

o Life Span – 1809-1836

o Fun Fact – During the battle of the Alamo, he drew a line in the sand asking any man wishing to stay and fight, to cross the line. All but one man crossed the line.

Jim Bowie

He is very famous for the “bowie knife” and reckless adventures. During the Texas revolution he shared command with William Travis of a volunteer force at the Alamo.

Jim Bowie cont.

He contracted pneumonia that kept him to his cot, during the battle of the Alamo. People say he died back against the wall with a pistol in one hand and his knife in the other.

Jim Bowie cont. o From – Kentucky

o Life Span – 1794-1876

o Story of the Knife- He carried this knife for protection; and during a brawl he was shot twice and stabbed twice by his opponents. He pulled down his opponent and killed him by using this knife. Hence the legend grew.

Santa Anna

He was a ruthless dictator from (1833-1855) of the Mexican territory. He waged war with the Americans over the rights to Texas; until he was captured at the battle of San Jacinto.

He was exiled from Mexico in 1853, until a couple of years before his death.

o Fun fact – After being elected president through a democracy, he pronounced that Mexico was not ready for a democracy. He then declared himself dictator.

Davy Crockett

He is best known as a noted hunter, unique backwoods style, and a heroic participant in defending the Alamo.

Disgusted with politics in Tennessee he moved to Texas. Where he sacrificed his life during the battle of the Alamo.

o Fun fact- Fun fact- He is one of the most well known American folk heroes. His tales have been exploited by songs, books, and many other forms of media.

How long was the battle?

oBattle began on February 23rd, 1836

oBattle ended on March 6th, 1836

oThis 13-day siege killed all but two Texian defenders

How long was the battle?

o Although this was just one battle, it was the downfall of Santa Anna. When the rest of Texas found out they wanted revenge for Santa Anna’s ruthlessness.

Battle Statistics

o Mexican Troops- 1,500 soldierso Alamo Troops- 189 soldierso All Alamo defenders were killed.

Those who surrendered were executed on Santa Anna’s orders. One of those who surrendered was Davy Crockett.

o Mexican troops were better supplied and had more artillery. They outnumbered their enemy 12 to 1.

o Although the Alamo defenders were outnumbered, they held off the Santa Anna for 13 days.

What This Sparked

• Texians were now seeking revenge against Santa Anna. On April 21st, 1836 Santa Anna was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto. • This battle was short lived and put

an end to the revolution. Santa Anna signed a peace treaty signing Texas over.

What This Sparked

At the Battle of San Jacinto over 630 Mexican soldiers were killed; and 730 more were captured. This battle was fought in one day

As Texians charged they cried out “Remember the Alamo. This phrase is forever etched into American legend.

Texas Before & Now Aftermath Historical Legend

Texas Before

When Santa Anna became president he created new laws for the country.

These laws became very unpopular throughout the country.

Texas Before

This split the country, and some citizens went to join the Texian force. Santa Anna then declared war against the US over the Texas territory.

Texas Now

After the war, the Texians came out winning the war and their revenge. Santa Anna signed over his rights to Texas in order to save his own life.

He was then banned from both Texas and Mexico until several years before his death. Texas became the 28th state in the union.

Santa Anna hoped that the fall of the Alamo would discourage the rest of the Texian army. It had an opposite effect; causing many Texians to join Sam Houston. This led to the fall of Santa Anna and his army.

The first English-language histories of the battle were written by a Texas Ranger, named John-Henry Brown.

A number of songs, books, and other material have been written to publicize the fall of the Alamo.

When the Alamo fell one of the most famous stories was the story of Davy Crockett. People said “that he surrendered with no less than 16 bodies around him”. He was a true American folk-hero.
