This issue of the Album Page is heavily weighted with Club News,Activities and Opportunities. First, for regular and associate mem-bers, there is an enclosure for annual membership dues. $24.00 forRegular members (residents of Multnomah, Clackamas, Washingtonand Clark counties) and $16.00 for Associate members (residentsoutside of those four counties). Also enclosed is an optional informa-tion survey and opportunity to contribute time and/or finances to Clubactivities. There have been a few changes to the members of several commit-tees. Here is the list of all current committee members. Several ofthese could use additional volunteers - completing and returning theenclosed survey would be a first step.

Cover of The MonthAround-The-The-World Flight of Amelia Earhart

Part IBy Eric Hummel

The story of this unique cover is actually the start of a series ofarticles about covers related to Amelia Earhart’s two attempts to flyRound-The-World. This cover was sold at the Christie’s RobsonLowe auction of September 25, 1991. It sold for $23,100 whichincluded a 10% buyers premium. To my knowledge, this is the lasttime it exchanged hands.

The articles to follow will tell the story behind the First attemptwhich ended in Hawaii and the Second attempt which ended some-where in the Pacific - plus the largest search by US Navy ships upuntil that time.

The story of this month’s cover is best told by the text and photoson the following two pages which were extracted without editing fromthe auction lot listing in the Christie’s Catalog.

Cover of the Month - continued.

This envelope, one of 7500 prepared for the journey in which AmeliaEarhart disappeared, is the only autographed example that was sparedfrom destruction through a strange twist of fate.

Amelia Earhart had already earned fame as the world’s greatestwoman aviator when she decided to embark on a 29,000-mile round-the-world flight in 1937. Flying from Oakland, California, on March17, Earhart and her crew successfully navigated the Lockheed Electraover the 2,400-mile course to Honolulu. Guiding the plane to the400-mile Pacific island coastline from such a long distance was aremarkable feat, requiring considerable skill to compensate for therelatively primitive communications and navigation equipment of thetime. As Earhart attempted to take off from Honolulu on the secondleg of the journey, which would take her to Howland Island, theElectra dipped to one side and the plane was crippled with a smashedwing and broken landing gear. Earhart was forced to return to Califor-nia where repairs could be made, and the round-the-world flight waspostponed.

On May 21 of the same year, the Electra rolled onto the runway for thesecond attempt. This time, Earhart chose to fly in the oppositedirection - from West to East. After five weeks, the Electra logged on22,000 miles across five continents with Earhart at the wheel and FredNoonan navigating. The final two legs of the flight to Howland Islandand then to Honolulu - were attempted on July 2 when Earhart andNoonan took off from New Guinea. After several communicationswith Earhart during the course of the flight, it became evident to theCoast Guard that the Electra was off course and in danger of runningout of fuel. Nearly 24 hours after take off, no further transmissionswere received. The Electra and her flyers were missing. The search forAmelia Earhart and traces of the Electra continued for two weeks.Aircraft and Navy Squadrons scanned thousands of miles, but nothingwas found. To this day the search for the Electra goes on.

Prior to the flight, Gimbels Department Store sold a special cacheted

November 2011 PAGE 7

souvenir envelope to collectors. The envelopes were sold for $5with Earhart’s autograph, or$2.50 unautographed. Theywould be carried on the flightand mailed to the addressee. When Earhart flew from Oak-land on the first attempt, shecarried 6,500 of these souvenirenvelopes. These were returnedto Oakland by the Honolulupostmaster for dispatch on thesecond attempt. When Earhart finally took off in May, another 1,000were added to the bags. In total 7,500 flight covers were with Earhartwhen she disappeared.

However, one of the autographedflight covers with proper post-marks and cachets was removedfrom the sealed post office bagsbetween the first and second at-tempts. This envelope is ad-dressed to E. H. Dimity, aparachute manufacturer who wasEarhart’s personal friend and un-official business promoter. Dimityparticipated in Earhart’s aviationactivities by raising moneythrough the sale of cacheted sou-

venir covers. As Dimity reported the story, the mail bags returnedfrom Honolulu were repackaged in the presence of Oakland Postmas-ter Donohoe. During the process, Dimity removed one envelopeaddressed to himself with the Postmaster’s permission. His secretintention - a practical joke - was to meet Earhart on her arrival aftercompleting the journey, wave the envelope in his hand, and exclaimthat the mail had arrived before she did. Instead, he preserved theunique memento to Earhart.

As of this moment, our next auction will be on 17 March 2012 - thethird Saturday of the month. And St. Patrick’s Day - so if you have theLuck of The Irish you should not miss this opportunity to find realtreasure. There will be several auction lot reviewing dates in the weekjust prior to the auction. There will be a few changes to the distribution, content and formatof the auction catalog. There will be fewer lots and they will ingeneral have start prices of at least $20. The estimated value of eachlot will also be higher. In the past, auction catalogs have been sent toall OSS members and the lots were viewable online (in color). Thisyear, the lots will again be available for viewing online, but catalogswill only be sent to individuals who have bid in the last auction or toanyone who requests a catalog. We expect to mail the catalogs at theend of February for the March auction date.

We have received a very extensive US Revenue collection whichwill be one of the highlights of the Auction. An early estimate of thecatalog value of just the Revenue lots is over $15,000 and may besubstantially higher. The quality of individuals items is much betterthan average. Many with catalog values exceeding $500. The auctionwill also include two extensive groups of Private Die ProprietaryStamps. Illustrated above is Sc. #RS 73 Dalleys Galvanic Horse Salve- one of the more visually impressive stamps in this group.

Collins Gallery Exhibit 2012by George Painter

As reported earlier, the Oregon Stamp Society has reserved theCollins Gallery on the third floor of the downtown Multnomah CountyPublic Library in the spring of 2012 for a stamp exhibit. Because of acancellation by another exhibitor, the expanded dates for our exhibitare April 25 through June 20, 2012. (The 2012 PIPEX show is May11-13, so its visitors can visit the Collins Gallery exhibit at the libraryas well).

The exhibit is entitled “Stamp Collecting Is Alive and Well.” Wewant to promote both OSS and the philatelic hobby to the manypeople who utilize the library. There is no theme for the exhibit, because we want to show how big our hobby is. We want a great dealof variety.

There are certain library-imposed rules. 1) Exhibit space is limitedand can not be expanded. 2) The dates to put up exhibits are April 23and 24, and the solitary take-down date is June 21. Library staff assistexhibitors, so these dates are rigid. The library staff will not put upexhibits for exhibitors. No one can put an exhibit up early or late, ortake it down early or late. If you fail to take it down on June 21, theywill remove it, and there is no guarantee that the staff removing it willknow how to handle philatelic material properly. Be sure you arethere in person both to put up and take down your exhibit.

Also remember that, if you exhibit, you are committing yourself toan eight-week run. Remember, too, that, the more people exhibiting, the smaller everyone’s exhibit space will be. Although I will limit thenumber of exhibitors if necessary, it is possible that your exhibit spacecould be quite small.

I am collecting names of people who want to show something fromtheir collection. Keep in mind the rules and reminders above. Themore people who want to exhibit, the smaller everyone’s space willbe. Although a first-come-first-served basis generally will be in place

In a related theme is the stamp from Indiawith a cancellation from Bahrain. Indianstamps were used in the protectorate for atime. The dumpster diver often fantasizesabout finding old French or British stampswith colonial cancels prior to the coloniesissuing their own stamps, a sure sign ofdeclining testosterone levels

The dumpster diver has derived unparal-leled pleasure from finding fairly commoncancels on common stamps by imagining some significance topairing stamps from different countries cancelled in the sameplace due to changing political geography. If the dumpster divercould only read the Slavic languages he would find a lifetime ofinexpensive fun finding cancels of former German, Polish andPrussian towns in their postwar reincarnations in Russia,Ukraine and Poland.

The writer has decided to mercifully conclude this series withthe next article. The dumpster diver came to this decision afteroverhearing some OSS members discussing the desirability ofturning the tree in front of the club house into a hanging treewhile giving sideways glances towards this writer. The OSSboard can also cancel that special board meeting that wasplanned.

In this episode, the dumpster diver will explore some chang-ing political boundaries, as well as some historically interestingplaces as evidenced in postal markings. Once again, thesource is usually from the lowest costing definitives in dealerstocks or bargain bins and kilo nights.

The dumpster diver has been fascinated with changingpolitical boundaries over the past 200 yearsor so, especially where boundary changesresult in cities becoming part of a differentcountry (and postal administration). As wecan easily see, this kind of obsession ismuch more affordable than obsessing oversay, 1870’s US grill vari-eties. An example is theGerman 12pf stamp atleft. The Innsbruck cancelis from shortly after Aus-tria ceased to exist, uponunion with Germany.

At the right, from Great Britain, is thecancel from Dublin before Ireland gainedindependence from Britain.

From Asia is the pair ofstamps with Tsingtaocancellations. The first isas a German colony andthe second as territoryoccupied by Japan duringWW I. Now, if I can justfind a Chinese stamp witha Tsingtao cancellation…
