2 AUGUST 2020 SAINT ALOYSIUS GONZAGA PARISH PAGE 3

The offering of the love of God is emphasized in our readings this Sunday. The first reading speaks about how bountiful is the love of God. The prophet Isaiah utilizes the images of water and bread, which in the desert are precious sources of nourishment, to proclaim what God wants for His people, abundant and ultimate satisfaction. He invites us to a place where we will be secure, where we could satisfy all our hungers, desires, and needs... Where we shall lack for nothing.

St. Paul in the second reading talks about the intimate and strong bond between him and those who keep God's covenant. This relationship, unique only to our God, cannot be destroyed, broken or annulled. St. Paul, at the threshold of his own martyrdom, maintains and reinforces the idea that nothing shall stand between our God and us, nor principalities or demons, nor the past or the future, not even our own personal weaknesses. This is all as a consequence of God's promises.

These promises have a concrete appearance. God's offering of love becomes food for us. In today's gospel the miracle of the multiplication of the fish and loaves acquires Eucharist connotation. The author identifies the time of the day, it was evening, almost as foreshadow of the last supper, which also took place at the end of the day. It mentions how Jesus took the loaves and looking up to heaven said the blessing, broke the loaves and fed the crowd. This was the inspiration for the primitive church to celebrate the Eucharist, as it is an inspiration for us today. This is the moment where all must be fed, all must be taken care of, and all must be satisfied. This is Eucharist.

This event acts as a model for the church in all ages involving the whole Body of Christ. Jesus accomplished the feeding of the crowd with the help of his disciples. He didn't want to make of this a "one man show". He made his disciples part of the delivery even though they were reluctant at the beginning to do so and also looked for pragmatic ways of solving the problem. Challenged by Jesus to use their own resources and to simply have faith they were able to feed everybody. What started with an insignificant portion of food became an abundant gesture from our Creator to His creation.

The five loaves and two fishes represent the resources and the potential we pose for goodness. This gift may be our ability to provide a neighbor of something he might need, or a listening ear to a sorrowing widow, or to be willing to be member of a parish organization. In whatever way we are of service for others we show the compassion of Christ, the very same compassion that moved him when he disembarked and saw the vast crowd and their needs. We gather around this altar to celebrate the Eucharist and to receive the gift, which we are called to share. Only in such we can be for others, only in such we can be of nourishment... only in such we can be Eucharist... And we don't even get to do dishes.

Creating a Lesson Plan: Spiritual Goals (Catechist 2020-2021 Handbook and Planning Guide) What makes catechesis different from other forms of learning is that “the object of catechesis is communion with Jesus Christ” (National Directory for Catechesis, 19B). It promotes an encounter with Christ through our beliefs, the sacraments, the moral life, and the life of prayer. “At the heart of catechesis we find, in essence, a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth,” (St. John Paul II, Catechesi Tradendae, 5; also NDC, 19B).

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

National Immunization Awareness Month is an annual observance that highlights the importance of getting recommended vaccines throughout your life. Advocate Aurora Health encourages you talk to your doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional to ensure you and your family are up to date on recommended vaccines. During National Immunization Awareness

Month, your faith community can:

Encourage members to get their flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends every person six months and older receive an annual flu vaccine. See the CDC Flu Vaccine Finder and other information at https://www.cdc.gov/flu. Offer your building as a flu vaccination site. Remember to follow CDC safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Learn more at https://tinyurl.com/r3dcpqk. Organize rides to vaccination clinics or set up vaccination appointments for seniors, those with disabilities and other members in need of assistance. Hold an information session on vaccines or publicize the CDC vaccine guide in your faith community newsletter or website: https://tinyurl.com/y3kyo25p.

Prayer: Thank you for the protection we receive through immunization. Strengthen and guide us as we care for ourselves and those with whom we share our world. You Have the Power to Protect

If you are pregnant, getting vaccinated can help protect your baby after birth by passing on

antibodies. These antibodies can give your baby short-term protection from flu and whooping cough until it is time for their own vaccines. Parents: You have the power to protect your children against serious diseases like measles, cancers caused by HPV, and whooping cough. View CDC’s immunization schedule to see which vaccines your children need, whether they are babies or teenagers: https://tinyurl.com/y8b2ocvf Adults: Vaccines aren’t just for kids. You may need vaccines to protect against whooping cough, flu, pneumonia, and shingles. Ask your doctor about vaccines you may need for your age, health conditions, job, or lifestyle. Knights of Columbus

Since 1882, membership in the Knights of Columbus has been open to men 18 years of age or older who are "practical" (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. Since that time, the Knights of Columbus has understood "practical catholic" to mean a Catholic who accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, i and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.

We are seeking members for our group here at St. Aloysius. If you are interested in joining and are 18 years of age or older, please contact David Diaz at 773-206-9455.
