ISSUE #6 - JUNE, 2010 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This was the best Pentecost that I can remember. The church was packed with 548 people. Rickie Feuille, Fr. Claire Degenhart, and Michael and Anthony Snow (father and son) were baptized, and Bishop Terrence Kelshaw confirmed (or received) thirty teens and adults. Although the service was two hours, it was vibrant with the presence of God! A couple of months ago our Senior Warden, Gus Haddad, suggested that we might have a church picnic in May. Approximately four hundred church members came and another two hundred folks from our neighborhood. The praise band provided wonderful music, while Bob Gilbert drove kids around in Maynard Haddad’s fire truck. Maynard and Anita Haddad, Joey and his wife, Julia Haddad, and Jimmy Daw were making burgers and hotdogs; Lorraine Roper managed side dishes; Sally and Steve Mletzko decorated; Rachael Degenhart was in charge of games; and Christine Francis and Betsey Parker were making snow cones. Noah Hicks put the rector in the dunk tank on his first pitch! Thanks also go to the church staff for their hard work, and some of the Men of Christ who helped set up. Finally, Gus, thank you for spearheading the entire project. May has been a busy month. We will need to do asbestos abatement, move a wall to create a larger pantry, install a new tile floor and new equipment. The cost for the work to be done is about $100,000. Also, some of you have been wondering when we would get around to painting the back wall of the church. We wanted to see if we had any leaks after we reroofed last year, and I think it is safe to say that we can move ahead on that, too. May we ask that you try to be faithful in giving to the Lord through the summertime? Frequently, giving lags in the summer because members are out of town. A good way to remain consistent is to set up an ACH withdrawal from your checking account or automatic payments through online banking. Finally, I would like to remind you of an idea that has been around for a long time: Extra Dollar Giving. What is it? It is putting an extra dollar in the plate. Think of it as a “thank offering”…a way to thank God for specific blessings during the week. Believe it or not, those extra dollars add up! Noah Hicks put the rector in the dunk tank on his first pitch! Thanks also go to the church staff for their hard work, and some of the Men of Christ who helped set up. Finally, Gus, thank you for spearheading the entire project.

May has been a busy month. On May 2nd, we had Gary Gunning of the Gideon's International Society give a brief presentation, and as you left the church you gave $2,274 to the Gideon's for their ministry of distributing Bibles.

On May 16th we honored those who were graduating. If you missed the service, then let me say again, “Congratulations to the graduating seniors of 2010! We are proud of you and are praying that God will guide your steps as you enter the next stage of your life.

The Men of Christ is our monthly men’s meeting at the home of a church member that includes dinner and a testimony. On June 17th we will be having a BBQ before taking a couple of months off for summertime. Check the web site for details.

This summer we will be renovating the kitchen in WR Hall. It has been forty years since it was originally built, and all of the equipment, except the stove, is in very bad shape. Also, the needs of both the church and school have changed over the years. We renovated the galley during the Christmas break with all new equipment, and added a large cold storage unit outside.

Starting June 7th the kitchen will be out of

service for about six weeks.

May we ask that you try to be faithful in

giving to the Lord through the summertime? Frequently, giving lags in the summer because members are out of town. A good way to remain consistent is to set up an ACH withdrawal from your checking account or automatic payments through online banking.

Finally, I would like to remind you of an idea

that has been around for a long time: Extra Dollar Giving. What is it? It is putting an extra dollar in the plate. Think of it as a “thank offering”…a way to thank God for specific blessings during the week. Believe it or not, those extra dollars add up!

May God grant you a blessed and (hopefully)

an enjoyable summer! Yours in our Blessed Lord,

The Rev. William C. Cobb, D. Min.

The single most important thing you can do for your child is…. Family, school, career paths, extracurricular activities, church, youth, missions; the list goes on and on. We want our children to be “well rounded” and to have exposure to everything so they will succeed in the world. Our Lord addressed this dilemma with some of his close friends. Mary and Martha were sisters; however, they each approached life from a different stance. Martha had a clear understanding of what society said was proper while her sister seemed to be “not in touch with reality.” Martha was frustrated with her sister’s seeming poor choice and she voiced this to Jesus. She wasn’t prepared for His answer! Instead of agreeing that Mary’s priorities were off and that Martha was “right”, He said, “Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41.) Martha had been bewitched, so to speak, into thinking that God looks on things the same way as the world, or in other words thinking that God and society agree on what is important. She was shocked to find that what God deemed important was what the world called “foolish.” I Cor 1:27 tells us, “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” Mary’s choice had been to sit and fellowship with Jesus. Martha’s choice was to do what society had said was proper for a hostess to do. What does this have to do with us today? As we raise our children, teaching and modeling a personal walk with God will have more ultimate value than all the running around and sacrificing we can do for them. Let us not be bewitched as Martha was but may we see with clear eyes what is truly important in terms of life and eternity. God bless you! Save the Date! SPORTS CAMP! We are rolling into Summer! I hope you survived the end of the school year. Con-gratulations to all our high school gradu-ates! As I look at what God has done in the youth ministry over this past semes-ter, it is plain that He is guiding us and moving us in the di-rection of His will. Thank you Jesus! Looking forward to summer, we have an exciting time ahead of us. We will be having our summer schedule of Youth Group for June and July. Middle School and High School will both meet at the same time….Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, in the YAC. In June, we are already planning on outreach to the Christian Men’s Home here in town. I am really looking forward to it. We are looking to see what the kids want to do this summer; the sky’s the limit. If you have any ideas, please let me know! Please pray for our service members, wherever they may

be. Pray for the peace of the Lord

for their families and loved ones.

"To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian. The signal instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labours with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude and Piety to the Supreme Author of all Good." --George Washington

Thomas Jefferson proclaimed, "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time. ... Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever."

Texas 1845, Constitutional Preamble... "We the People of the Republic of Texas, acknowledging, with gratitude, the grace and beneficence of God..."

CIUDAD NUEVA (“New City”) Community Outreach & Development in the

St. Clement’s neighborhood

Ciudad Nueva Community Outreach seeks to embody the gospel of Jesus Christ

by advancing the renewal and development of inner city El Paso through the transformation and empowerment of its residents.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PURCHASED WILDCAT ROUNDUP TICKETS FOR THE CHILDREN OF OUR DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY! THE KIDS HAD AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS

FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!! We have just finished up another great year of after-school programs and I want to thank all of you who

have volunteered with this outreach to our downtown neighborhood. About 60 individuals volunteered through the course of the school year in one capacity or another, and you’ve all had a tremendous impact

on the youth and families of our community. I can’t thank you enough! May God bless you all and I hope you have a great summer.

ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP A NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH ATTEND SUMMER CAMP??

Thank you for everyone who donated funds towards our camp scholarships! We are still raising funds to provide scholarships for neighborhood youth to attend Christian summer adventure camps in

New Mexico and Arizona, as well as day camps here in town.

This year our goal is to provide scholarships for over 60 kids to attend camp!!! In the past, camp attendance has been one of the most transformational weeks in the lives of the kids.

Camp provides a chance for kids to head to the mountains (sometimes for the first time ever), build deeper relationships, and grow in their faith. In order to provide this amazing experience

we need to raise well over $20,000 to provide scholarships for:

40 kids to attend out-of-town camps (New Mexico and Arizona) 20+ kids to attend 5 weeks of day camps in El Paso

The scholarships cover the total cost of the camp, transportation, and a few basic camping accessories. In order to earn these scholarships, kids must regularly participate in our after-school ministry, exhibit

good behavior, pay a very small fee, and complete community service activities. Some of the kids in Launch Pad have been saving up their Launch Pad “bucks” for three years in order to attend camp!

The total cost for most of the camps ranges from $350 to $500 per camper, depending on the camp. If

you have questions please contact Sami DiPasquale at 269-5528 or at [email protected]. Please make any checks payable to “Ciudad Nueva” and send to: Sami DiPasquale, Ciudad Nueva

Community Outreach, St. Clements, 810 N. Campbell, El Paso TX 79902. All donations are tax-deductible and contributions in any amount will be greatly appreciated!

A Letter to Graduates, from www.christianparents.com

Graduating seniors are getting ready to leave home and go out into the world. You will be facing new and different situations, some of which you are prepared for, and some you will have to figure out as you go. The more you study and know now before you leave home, the less chinks in the armor.  I know you care or you wouldn't even be reading this. Many of you have a sense of still looking for some foundational answers that you know you can trust.   Something that doesn't change with each new situation in life.   That answer is Jesus Christ. He is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. And He teaches us how we shall live.  Deuteronomy 8:3 and Matthew 4:4 tells us how to live and not get trapped:  "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."

So if anyone acknowledge that Jesus is the answer, then let him also acknowledge that the way to follow Him is to do what He says. After all He clearly says, "If you love Me, do what I say." He says, "Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth." Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand the fiery darts of the enemy.  (See Ephesians 6:11‐19). Yes, you are going out into the world, and you will have many wonderful times. but from time to time there will be hard decisions to make, choices of what to do, right and wrong, life and death.   To have good faith and a clear conscience that you will not be hurt, the Bible is the one book to know. Consider how many other books you've studied from cover to cover.  You could fill a library with the books you've  mastered.  Now is the time to treasure up the best book of all into your heart.  Then you will see and know and consider and understand (Isaiah 41:20) the things of life by the faith of God.    Jesus said, "...in the world you shall have tribulation, but fear not, for I have overcome the world." Knowing His way so we can follow Him, that is our armor against all the snares, pitfalls and fiery arrows of the enemy.   Even people who believe in God (as I did when I left high school) can be snared by the pressures of collegiate life ( as I was).  How do I know this is true according to God's word? Because it is written, "My people are  destroyed for their lack of knowledge."   We can believe in God and be one of His, but still not know to have on the armor we need for some particular situation that may confront us. That's where the fiery darts of the enemy can attack, in the place where we were ignorant, or presumed on the Grace of God.   Jesus Christ is our sufficiency, yes, true; and He is also the Captain of our faith, the Leader of our soul. And He commands us to follow Him.  He said, “If you continue in My word, then you are my disciples indeed." So let us continue in His Word and see how it helps us in the world today.  He has promised us victory in the world.  And this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.  Since the faith He wants us to have is the faith that comes of God, and not some imagination of our own, let us go on to study and show ourselves approved unto God even before we go on to college or marriage or career. In Jesus' name, Amen.

If  you  already  know  everything  you  need  to  know,  then  you  prove  to  yourself  that  you  don't  know  as  you should.  Learn this message from God…..put your trust in Him and not in yourself.  You do not  yet see Him as He sees you.  For now we see as through a glass darkly, but then face to face. Then we shall see Him face to face and know Him as He knows us is after we have received our resurrection body.  Until then we know in part.

His grace is sufficient.  True.  But we should not be presumptuous.  Presumptuous sin is still a sin. Presumption does not  take  the place of  faith.    Faith  comes by hearing,  and hearing by  the Word of God.  (Romans 10:17). Many students fall on the rocks of life as they sail their good ship out of home port.  Some lives are hurt badly within the first year after leaving home.  Eighty percent (80%) of those who went to church while at home,  quit

after leaving home.  Many have great problems with the love of their life, sweetheart or fiancée or money, trying to stay on course to get where they want to go.  They make wrong decisions in the pressure of the moment because they did not know enough scripture for guidance.  It's almost like minnows leaving the safety of home port to go into the big ocean where catfish and sharks lurk to lead them astray.  College environments are often ripe with temptation for agnosticism, atheism, or some other spirit worship, psychic readings, rational atheism, relative  values evolution, and many other seducing spirits.  Why is this here, you ask? Because Jesus said, "...in the world you shall have tribulation, but fear not for I have overcome the world." And in another place the Word of God says, "And this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith."  So you will have good faith of God, you need to know the truth of God. The truth of God from scripture and the truth of God from the things He has created are opened to you.

To avoid snares and not be deceived, you need to understand the deceit of humanism. Failure to understand the deceits of humanism causes many to fall into confusion and eventually stumble into many problems that aren't necessary. To find good role models, take a look at our Christian heritage in America.

Students who know these things have an easier time in life than those who are ignorant and by their ignorance of these things fall into many snares and hurts.  I don't want to see you get hurt. I want to see you have good success and prosper in all you do. God bless you!

We are Stewards of God’s Estate

"Estate planning." The phrase sounds so dry, distant, and foreboding. It's unfortunate so many people shy away from even the thought of it, because estate planning is really about caring for you and your loved ones and seeing that they are provided for.

The process of estate planning includes all the planning that's involved for setting up a will and other documents which insure that the assets entrusted to you by God go to the  people  or  organizations  that  you  want  to  have  them.  Since  your  estate  plan  is  your  blueprint  for  where  you  want  you  property  to  go,  a  comprehensive estate plan is one of the most important steps a person can take.  With a solid estate plan, you can prepare yourself and your family for the unexpected and keep you on the path God has set you on.

Psalm 50:1012 (God says) “Every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills…and the creatures of the field are mine…for the world is mine, and all that is in it.”  Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

If we belong to Christ, it’s logical that everything we have truly belongs to Him.

When we give to God, we are just taking our hands off what already belongs to Him.

Who was Jesus? He began His ministry by being hungry, yet He is the Bread of Life. Jesus ended His earthly ministry by being thirsty, yet He is the Living Water. Jesus was weary, yet He is our rest. Jesus paid tribute, yet He is the King. Jesus was accused of having a demon, yet He cast out demons. Jesus wept, yet He wipes away our tears. Jesus was sold for thirty pieces of silver, yet He redeemed the world. Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, yet He is the Good Shepherd. Jesus died, yet by His death He destroyed the power of death. -Attributed to Gregory of Nazianzus (329-389)
