436-4522 or [email protected]. We’re in need of readers, actors, costume/set designers, choristers, instrumentalists, snack chefs, and gen-eral assistants, so there’s definitely something for everyone! We’ll have one rehearsal immediately prior to the service, at 4:00 pm (snacks included).

Feast of the Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2019

The Feast of the Epiphany will be celebrat-ed with a Choral High Mass at 11:00 am. The Epiphany is one of the seven principle feasts observed in the Episcopal Church. As we celebrated Christmas our focus was on taking in the wondrous mystery of the incarnation—God in human form—as we adored the helpless infant Lord in the manger. During Epiphany, we come to see Jesus as the “light of the world,” shifting our focus towards what His incarnation means for us and for the whole world. During the Epiphany season, as we “get to know” Jesus, we are also asked to respond to Him. Like the shep-herds who ran to the manger, the Magi who trav-elled great distances to bring Him gifts, and the disciples who heeded His call, we too can wor-ship and follow Him today. The name “Epiphany” is derived from a Greek word meaning “manifestation,” or “appearing.” Anglican prayer books interpret the word with an alternative title, “The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.” The last title, of course, is a reference to the story of the Wise Men from the East. A Christian observance on January 6 is found as early as the end of the second century in Egypt. The feast combined

The Feast of the Holy Name of Our Lord will be celebrated on January 1, 2019, at 10:00 am.

Epiphany Pageant, Burning of the Greens and Three Kings’ Dance Party

January 5, 2019 On Saturday, January 5, at 5:30 pm, there will be a special service to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The service will follow a lessons and carols format, including a pageant in which parishioners (children and adults) will depict the scenes described in our scripture readings, and will conclude with a candlelight procession out-side and burning of the greens. A Three Kings’ Dance Party, with festive supper, will follow the service at 6:30 pm. Bring along a small branch from your Christmas tree to include in our Epiphany fire. If you or your child(ren)—or any child (ren) in your life—are interested in participating in the pageant, please contact Amy Wells at 404-

Parish Luncheon January 6, 2019

Our regular First Sunday luncheon will be after the 11:00 am Eucharist on Sunday, Janu-ary 6, 2019. Those with last names beginning in A-H are asked to bring a dessert, I-R a main dish, and S-Z a vegetable or side dish.

The Baptism of Our Lord January 13, 2019

On the first Sunday after Epiphany, the Western Church celebrates the Baptism of Our Lord. Please join us to celebrate this occasion in the life of Jesus. This is a traditional time for baptisms and we will be celebrating a baptism at the 11am service this year.

Annual Meeting January 27, 2019

The 95th Annual Meeting of the Church of Our Saviour will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019. There will be one service, at 10:00 am, this day which will be followed by the Annual Meeting. Elections will be held for new vestry mem-bers. A printed synopsis of each guild’s 2018 ac-tivities will be provided, and Father Chris will discuss his thoughts on how to grow our neigh-borhood parish. Additional details are available on the front page of this newsletter.

A Bit of History: Our Baptismal Font By Oreta Hinamon Campbell

January, being the month we celebrate Jesus’ baptism, it seems appropriate to say a few words about the baptismal font which stands at the back of Our Saviour under the statue of Our Lady. To start with, our baptismal font is 149 years old. It is made of “Caen Stone,” a form of fine-grained limestone imported from France and used primarily in churches. Our font was made in 1867. It was originally given to Saint Peter’s Church in Rome, Georgia, by Trinity Church in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, to replace the one destroyed by occupying Union forces in 1864 and as a gesture of healing and unity after the War Between the States. When Saint Peter’s Church remodeled their Baptistery in the early 1900s a new font was donated to them and Saint Peter’s gave the Caen Stone font to the Church of Our Saviour to help out what was then a newly founded church. We are grateful and honored to have it in our sanctuary.

“Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body the Church. The bond which God establishes in Baptism

Saint of the Month Conversion of Saint Paul

By Berkeley Strobel January 25 is the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. In the history of the church, it is diffi-cult to think of an event after the Pentecost more important. It is almost impossible to conceive of the Church minus the works of Saint Paul. Paul, originally named Saul, was born in the province of Cilicia, which is several hundred miles north of Palestine, roughly the northeast “corner” of the Mediterranean. His was a devout family, of the tribe of Benjamin, and by birth he was a Roman citizen, by reason of his father’s citizenship. As a youth he was sent to Jerusalem to study the Law of Moses under Gamaliel. Paul became a Pharisee. Those who took this way dedicated their lives to complete obedi-ence to the Law. Pharisees were generally so dedicated that any exception, any violation of the Law, no matter how slight, was a grievous mat-ter. To disobey any part of the Law is to disobey the whole. Total focus, total attention to every act is required, from waking to sleeping. By this obedience, God is both proclaimed as the one true God, and is also glorified. Though the Phari-sees accepted the concept of some sort of resur-rection, a hope of some sort of resurrected, heav-enly life was not their main focus. Paul was one who supported this view. It is known that his zeal for the Law was great and that when Saint Stephen was martyred he was present, looking after the clothing of those who actually took part. This experience only exacer-bated his zeal, and he sought written authority to travel to Damascus with a group to arrest Chris-tians there, and bring them back for trial. It was on this journey that God appeared to Paul. A brilliant light struck the party to the ground, and Paul heard Our Lord’s voice, though the others only heard incomprehensible sounds. The dialogue itself is revealing. Paul heard a voice that said; “Saul, why dost thou persecute me?” “Who art thou, Lord?” “Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecuted.”

Paul then asked what Our Lord would have him do. He was given specific instructions, and, having been made blind by the light, was led on the way by his companions. Paul neither ate nor drank anything, a usual practice of repentance for the Pharisees. At the end of three days a local Christian had a vision of Our Lord, telling him to heal the notorious Paul. Despite his own misgiv-ings, he obeyed, and told Paul of the vision, that Paul was to reveal Christ to the Gentiles. Paul was immediately baptized, and began preaching in the synagogues of Damascus that Jesus was the Son of God. There can be no doubt as to the degree of animosity this generated in the Phari-sees and the rulers of the Jews. From then on he was marked for death by the zealots and the leaders. One of the remarkable elements of his con-version is that once convinced, Paul immediately began preaching the good news. He didn’t need to take a course, attend a seminar, or verify his arguments. He knew. He had always known. His path had been set for him from his birth onward. The one necessary element, the one element that God could not supply, will not command, was Paul’s admission, of his own free will, that Jesus is the Only Son of God, the Lord and Saviour of us all. The story of the Conversion of Saint Paul is at heart the story of every conversion of every believer. Truth is presented, sometimes by strangers, sometimes by unbelievers, often through seeming accidents, apparently random events. In each case, there is one element which even God cannot supply. Each one of us must ask, “What is it that You want of me, Lord?” And then do it.

Saint Paul, pray for us.
