Act as if you are confident - even if you are not.Confidence, you will find, is a state of mind,the fulfillment of attitude evolving with time.

True confidence is a trait of character,not a boastful or prideful talk.

Always act with sincere humility,then with true confidence you will walk.

Act as if you are affluent,even when you’re the beggar in need.Wealth you will find, will often leave you behind,if its attainment will make you unkind.

True wealth is not measured with money,but with love, and knowledge and health.

Act as if you’re least of all men,and then you shall find true wealth.

Act as if you are noble,even if your nobility’s numb.

Act as if you are a servant,even if your own kingdom has come.

When you act “as if”you are foretelling your fate,

your future is already known.Act as if it is possible,

If Only...

If only men would humbly admitthe faults and wrongs they’ve done -

If only children remained innocent,uncorrupted as oft they become.

If only lovers remained in love,never quarreled, bickered or fought -

If only strangers wouldn’t feel estranged,unwanted, unloved, and unsought.

If only women were treated as women,as angels sweet and divine -

If only people would treat each otherwith that same thought in mind.

If only there were no poverty,no homeless, or hungry, or lost -

If only we helped each other out,regardless of what the cost.

If only we paid more attention,to the problems and needs that abound -

If only we cared more for others,how much love in our lives could be found.

If only we wept more often,and let our souls sing out -

If only we laughed out loud now and then,and befriended and served our fellow men.

The Journey Before Me

The Journey before me is a difficult oneIt’s a perilous path to walk.

It is laden with thorns and treacherous traps, strewn with glass and rock.

Pitfalls surround me, the darkness engulfs me,black as night is the day.

Terror abounds and sickness compounds frightening my health away.

Calamities come, decay descends,Sorrow stays too long.

Disease ensues, my spirit’s sinkand everything turns out wrong.

Yet up ahead in the distance before meI see the light of day.

The darkness fades, the sickness subsides,my troubles have gone away.

Though terrifying the trail may be,my spirit is strengthened, my soul is set free.

Ignorance turns to intelligence,fear turns into faith.

Troubles turn into triumphs -in life this is commonplace.

Where Are the Men?

Where are the men who valiantly fought,for freedom and virtue and truth?

Where are the men who are honest at heart,who are pure as the innocent youth?

Where are the men who openly weepwith women when they mourn?

Where are the men who are strong as an ox,and gentle as a newborn?

Where are the men of character, stalwart, faithful, and true?

Where are the men who love their wivesand never their vows would undo?

Where are the men of substance,of honor, and pride, and self worth?

Where are the men with courage,to stand up and challenge the earth?

Where are the men with manners,with morals, and values, and heart?

Where are the men unafraid to be menwho are willing to do their part?

Where are the men who are manly men,gentle, noble, and true?

Where are the men who know what it means to be men?

Are there really so few who know what real men do?

Let us be men, courageous men unafraid to do our part.

Let us be stalwart, faithful, and true,with morals, and values, and heart.

Let us be men with standards, convictions, faith, and love.

Let us be good men and great men, with assistance from above.

Men of Honor

There is a special bond of brotherhood,a faithful fraternity,

that exists between men of honor,who know what real men should be.

They are not corrupt, coarse, or profane,they are respectful, clean, and pure.

They do not belittle, deceive, or disgrace,their course is steady and sure.

Happy Homes

Happy homes create healthy hearts,habitats filled with love.

Happy are they, who oft look heavenward,for help from up above.

I believe in you.I believe in all that you can do.I believe you’re intelligent. I believe in your dreams.I believe circumstance is irrelevant, it never is quite what it seems.

The Courage To Continue

When others tell you, you can’t,when everyone says that you won’t,

don’t listen to them, they’re the worst of men,continue and do what they don’t.

The courage to continue,when others retreat and give up,

is a courage to always hold on to,to live life and never let up.

Everyone will tell you what you haven’t done,people often give up right away.

They prefer to quit and often say,nothing good ever comes their way.

But if you have courage and do your best,and if you continue each day,

you’ll live your life and be content,and won’t listen to what others will say!

It is not enough to be the best,when you know you could be better.You must do the best that you can doand don’t worry about a grade letter - and yet,

It is not enough to work life away,if you’d rather have time to vacation and play.You must have fun so enjoy each day,life is too short, don’t worry it away.

Do What It Takes

Are you determined to do what it takes?To sweat and work even when your back breaks?Are you committed to excellence -your own personal best - to give it your alleven when you don’t pass the test?

Do What Must Be Done

Do what must be done,until you can do what you choose.You make the plans and you’ll win or you’ll lose,by what you’ve done and what you choose to do.

Always do your best and always do your part,and in life you’ll pass each test, with a calm and happy heart!

Fortress of Faith

A fortress of faith is built by timeas months and years go by.

The seedlings sprout, hope’s blossoms bloom,and the fortress extends to the sky.

Our fortress of faith is our fortitude,we are strengthened as each day goes by.

But our faith is often tested,and often we wonder why.

When our health fails or we lose a job,and our faith and patience is tried,

our fortress of faith keeps us fortified,it is what keeps us going inside.

The Fellow Who’s Blind

Please by kind to the fellow who’s blind,who cannot see his true worth.

He thinks life is defined by wasting his time,with the filth and corruption of earth.

He spends his days rotting away,debased and immoral and impure.

But if you are kind to the fellow who’s blind,he’ll regain his sight for sure.

Aspirations

What are your aspirations?Tell me about your goals.What are your ambitions?If you don’t know, no one knows.

Write down what you want to do,plan out who you’ll be.Take control then follow through,and create your own destiny.

What do you want to know?Who would you like to meet in life?Where do you want to go?

Will you follow the path that’s been prepared, or will you follow your heart and soul?

Take a minute and ask yourself,“is my life complete and whole?”

What more do you need?What more would you want?Have you done all you wanted to do?

If not, you can if you think you can!Dare to dream and then, follow through.

The Weary Warrior

What befalls the weary warrior,who willfully falls to the battle’s tail?

Without exerting his forces to fight,he willingly wishes to fail.

Warriors are fighters who never give up,who advance to the battle’s front.

Unafraid to fight for what is right,and willing to carry the brunt.

They give their all to the cause -crusaders noble, and pure.

Undaunted by pain unrelenting,survivors who always endure.

But what befalls the straggling soldierwho slips away from the captain’s view,and struggles to do what he’s asked to do?When faced with decisions of right and wrong,the soldier succumbs with the wicked throng.

But warriors will always be warriors,even if they retreat; don’t despair.

For in the end they’re victorious -for each is a noble heir.

Never Quit

Never quit and never give up -quitters give up right away.

Quitting is never an option,regardless of what others may say.

When you quit, you’re the failurebecause you fail to realize your true worth.

You don’t think you will be victorious,you think success is a gift that is given at birth.

Never quit and never give up -you’ll be grateful you didn’t one day.

For if you quit, you’ll live with regret -and that is what failures will say.

I Will

I will help the helpless, and befriend the friendless, and fight for the losing side.I will learn from the learned and defend the powerless, who have washed up with the tide.

I will shelter the homeless and bring hope to the hopeless, and in harmony and peace abide.I will earn my earnings and lend a hand,to each fellow who’s at my side.

What Is Success?

Success is a series of accomplishments,woven together with work.

Success is the dreamer who does what he loves,not the slacker who knows how to shirk.

Success is a series of lines,that wrinkle with the times.It’s the wisdom of age, the all knowing sage,who knows where to draw the line.

Success is the servant to the master who knowsthe path he will walk each day.

It is given to him who has prepared a plan,and is already on his way.

Let Me Live

Let me live in a world of wisdom,where knowledge and good books abound.

Let me live in a nation of integritywhere honor and truth are found.

Be a captain and leader.Strap on your strength,mount up your morale.Capture your courage,you’ll find it at length.

Lead and inspire,teach and encourage,be good and honest too.When you walk in frontand you set the pace,others will follow you.

Inspired Productivity

When I prayed for inspiration,I was asked for perspiration.When I prayed for creativity,I was asked for productivity.Every time I prayed for an easy load,more trials began to unfold.

Now I pray for perspiration,and when I work, I receive inspiration.So I’ll pray for more productivity,to enhance, in me, God’s creativity.Every day that I pray for a heavier load,more blessings in life begin to unfold.

Trials Come to Everyone

When your back is pinned against the wall,when you’ve lost your strength and you slip and fall.When your demons of doubt begin to shout,and make you cower and crawl -

Look to God and praise His name,don’t be bitter and never complain.

Trials come to everyone,the rich, the poor, the sinner and saint.But God is always here for usregardless of man’s complaint.

Everything

All I ask is for everything -your attention, your strength and your heart.

Do your best no matter what you do,and finish everything that you start.

All you need is persistence,courage and faith and a smile.

Good things come when you whistle and hum,it’s the hope that makes life worthwhile.

Standing Still

At times, life stands still.The incomplete becomes complete,the bad turns good, the sour - sweet,the forces of evil from good retreat.

Time stands still and people change.They make amends and change their ways.

Standing still soothes the soul, it calms the raging tide.It gives us time to meditate,to ponder, think, and pray.It gives us time to listen to what others have to say.

At times, we all must stand still.When we are incomplete - we long to be complete,the bad within us becomes good, the sour - sweet,the forces of evil from us retreat.

To make time stand still, we all must change.We must make amends and change our ways.

Standing still makes us whole,and lets love and peace reside.It gives us hope as we demonstratethat we listen, think, and pray.It gives us comfort when others listento what we have to say.

At times we mustn’t stand still.There is still much work for us to complete.The bad around us must become good, the sour - sweet, and as we do our part, the forces of evil from others will retreat.

Sleep While You Can

Sleep while you can,rest if you must,

then when you awake,you’ll be rested I trust.

The familiar expression,of early to bed...

was written, I think,to inspire your head.

Sleep is rewardingafter we work and we play,

but don’t sleep too long,or you’ll ruin your day.

Be healthy and wiseas Franklin suggests.

Do your best each day,and get plenty of rest.

The Vanquished Victor

The vanquished victor was left to die,after his last battle cry.For they thought him weak, since he couldn’t speak,and assumed he’d give up and die.

“Not so”, cried his captain,who arose from the earth,who’d befriended the victor before.“The vanquished victor’s a friend of mine,he’ll live and he’ll fight once more.”

So the vanquished victor arose from the earth,with his captain at his side.They continued their fight well into the night,and much to the others’ delight -the vanquished victor and his courageous captain,together did faithfully fight.

They fought side by side,they couldn’t be beatwhen they came to battle,the others would retreat.

Their strength was defined,as the willpower of mind,they were one in purpose,a complete mastermind,the greatest unity known to mankind.

At times we are captainsand defend those too weak,who have fallen to earthand are too frightened to speak.

In turn, when we fall,our captains will call.They will stand by our side,they will help us be strong,that in life we may know,where we belong.

The World’s a Better Place

The world’s a better place,because you do your part,because you live in such a way,that touches every heart.

The world’s a better place,for what you know and say,for what you’ve seen and heard each day,how you always help others to find their way.

The world’s a better placebecause of how you live,you serve and lift and sacrifice,you’re a giver who loves to give.

Count on Me!

You can count on me to be there when you fall.You can count on me to see you through it all.

Count on me to pick you up,I’ll carry you when life’s been unfair.Count on me to cry with you,when life beats you down and you’re in despair.

You can count on me because I can count on you.We’re in this life together, as friends that’s what we do.

Help Me Father

Help me Father, to learn and grow,there’s so much more that I don’t know.Life is a lesson I learn each day,I stumble and fall and lose my way.

At times it seems I do not learn,I do not grow, nor do I earnthe rights of passage paved for me,to give me life and set me free.

Help me Father, to yearn to know,to do much more now that I’ve grown -to learn life’s lessons every day,even when I stumble and lose my way.

Learning From Adversity

Adversity is my teacher,and I have much to learn.

He humbles me when I need humbling,but each lesson comes in turn.

For adversity tries my patience.At times he’s ruthless, unkind -

but adversity is my ally,and the greatest teacher I’ll find.

Listen

When I tell you in a rhyme,you think I waste your time.When I tell you in a song,you never sing along.

I try to tell you with the light,from the stars at night.I try to tell you in the day,from the sun’s warm ray,but you never seem to listento what I have to say.

We all must listen with our ears,with our hearts, and souls, and minds,and as we listen He will calm our fears,and envelop us in His arms.

All Aboard!

“All Aboard!” the conductor roared,to the masses who stood by the train -to the men and the women,and the dear little childrenwho stood out in the rain.

“You’re in for an adventure,the ride of your life,one you’ll not soon forget.Just board the train,then we’re off again,on the wonderful adventure of life.”

“The train speeds upand the tracks unfold,and we twist and turn as we go.Life’s ups and downsturn us all around,as we experience, learn, and grow.”

“Our train of life moves us here and there - traveling to and fro,we learn about life from what we do not know, and that is what makes us grow.”

The Educated Man

I sat beside a wise old man,who had lived a grand old life,a man who had seen some wonderful daysand sadly, plenty of strife.

We spoke of his travels, I laughed at his jokes,we talked as if old friends were we.And then with a stern solemn tone in his voice, he said, “Son, nothing in life is for free.”

“You must faithfully work every day of your lifelong hours at times is your lot.At times you will struggle and sacrifice much,at times you will lose the battles you’ve fought.”

“But never give up, my bright young friend,along with the pain and the strife -is a purposeful life filled with hope and with love,one with meaning and help from above.”

“Life is a treasure, a gift we are given,a blessing that oft is disguised.Too often life’s taken for granted,rejected, ignored, and denied.”

“But don’t give up on life, my boy,never stop living your life, my boy.Thank God and heaven to be alive and living,and treasure the life you’ve been given.”

Fist Full of Fire Flies

I caught a fist full of fire fliesone dark and lonely night.The fire flies were full of light,they lit my hands right up.

The fire flies grew brighteras darkness settled inthe darkness thickened, the light disappeared,but my fire flies glowed within.

I wanted to take them home with meto light my path ahead,but something told me not to,so I left them there instead.

The road I trod seemed lit with love,a path prepared for me,‘twas something of a wonder,but not always did I see.

The beggar and the bourgeois,*were about to break their bread.

The one bowed his head to pray,the other, had not a good word to say.

The beggar and the bourgeois,often agreed to disagree,about the haves and the have-nots,those with everything, nothing, and in between.

The beggar and the bourgeoisreally are one in the same.

It’s sad and weak and intolerably lame.

I made sand castles in the sand,beside the ocean shore.

The water surged and the waves crashed down,upon the ocean floor.

Castles will come, and castles will go,with each emperor and their troubadour,*

but ocean waves never cease to end,there will always be more in store.

So when waves crash down upon your crownand all seems lost at sea -

begin again, for the waves never end,life must be lived through calamity.

*A troubadour as defined by the American Heritage dictionary, is (1) “One of a class of lyric poet-musicians of the 12th and 13th centuries in Province and Northern Italy.” The fact that an emperor would have his own personal troubadour signifies his need to be entertained and cheered up when the waves came “crashing” down on him.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones,but words will never hurt me.”Have you ever heard a sillier thingthen to listen to nonsense and rubbish like that?I admit it might be, very frightening to be,brutally beat by a bat - but it would also be,much more frightening to me,to be called names that hurt,and see people treat me, and others like that.So I’m partially afraid of the sticks and the stones,but I’m simply appalled, that from the actions of others, I’ll be alone.

Justification

When can a man justify that he is a man?And how can we ratify, when a boy becomes a man?How old must he be, and how much must he weigh?Can we condemn his height?Will we ever really see?

A man is what he makes of himself,and what others around him have helped him to be.He simply becomes what he always has been.It’s not a question of “when a boy becomes a man”,but rather, the way he lives, for that justifies the man.What he does helps him become who he always was.

I held the little rainbow within my little hand.

I looked at every color with its sparkling little strand.

The stormy sea in front of me has raged its war of misery -

and pouring down calamity, it drowns my life-long liberty.

The fire-flood of ages pasthas haunted me once, yet shall not last.

It looks like fun - such a happening place,with every upturned nose and plastic face.

But it’s a pathetic pool,a very shallow and mirky pool.And when we visit, we play the fool,by following the crowd into the popular pool.

The Pebble and the Rock

The pebble and the rock,sat down and had a talk.

The one complained of being small,the other that he was too tall.

Neither one seemed fully satisfied -they didn’t seem happy at all.

The pebble and the rock,often had this talk.

They would gripe and whine,and waste their time,

complaining about whatthey could not change.

The pebble and the rock,decided never to talk.

They argued that theywere too different that day,

and sadly each onehad nothing nice to say.

Several years passedand the pebble and the rockbroke down and had another talk.The one felt sorry for wasted time,

the other that he’d been unkind.They reclaimed their friendship once and for all,

and left their past behind.

My Simple Serendipity

I whistled as I walked with wonder,calmly down the lane.

Yet with each step, I sadly walked,for no one called my name.

The scarlet strands that scanned the land,from sea to shiny sea,

scarred my soul and very being -then led to my captivity.

I wrestled with the chains of death,the sad and sweetest sound,

that led me from my mountaintop,back to the starting ground.

Yet from my journeys to and frothrough rivers far and wide,

I came to know just that much more,of who I was inside.

I walked with wonder as wisdom wandered,along the path we tread.

I pled with patience and sorrowed with sadness,

to think of what I’d said.The water flowed so dreadfully

without it’s humming song -and no one came to listen,

so alone I trudged along.

Test of the Heart

I left my home and family with all their comforts dear,

to step into a foreign land,with forests far and near.

The Great Red Wood and Grand Blue Sprucethat sprang up from the ground,

told me of their greatest finds, throughout the land they’d found.

I leaned against the Great Red Wood,then pointed to the leaves,and asked Blue Spruce if he would grantthe leaf for which I pleased.He told me these were special leaves,

so special, they are rare,that only those who care enough,

put effort toward the dare.I asked him what he meant by this,

and what he’d have me do,for how to do the task he asked,

I didn’t have a clue.

Great Red Wood and Grand Blue Spruceboth whispered their reply -

“Climb the tree and you will see,the answers from on High.”

I climbed the tree most eagerly,yet sometimes had to rest,

and catch up with my goal aheadthat marked the final test.

And with each branch I slowly passed,the sky above drew nearer -

with ground beneath and sky above,my life seemed so much clearer.

I reached the leaf so high abovethat marked the final test,

and looked about at all aroundwith little thought of rest.

My heart was set on soaring high,my eyes looked round about,

I held the leaf within my hands,then I began to shout,

“Nothing is impossible - I have the leaf of life.”

Then silence pierced my soul again,and cut just like a knife.

I stood, and looked around -beside me swarmed a sea of trees

that sprang up from the groundthey told me of more treasures

that were waiting to be found.

A forest once filled with fearwas challenged by youth as a dreamer drew near.Each tree is filled with many leaves,

so special they are rare - that only those who care enough,

put effort toward the dare.

Sire Smile-a-lot

Sir Smile-a-lot was a well known knight,with a smile stuck on his face.

He grinned and laughed and smiled a lot -such a friend to the human race.

When others were gloomy, depressed, or sad,Sir Smile-a-lot smiled, and they’d feel glad.

Each day was the same, and he’d smile a lot.He’d sing, and he’d laugh when others would not.

Then one day a sad little boy came walking his way.“Sir Smile-a-lot”, moaned the young little boy,

“You smile a lot - I wish I could smile,I don’t even know how to smile.I’ve never done it before,

at least not in a long, long while.”

This saddened Sir Smile-a-lot through and through,for the first time ever, he knew not what to do.

He didn’t feel like smiling, ‘twas the most depressing news he’d ever heard.

Then he noticed a beautiful flower,and heard the sweet song of a bird.

“Young boy”, laughed the knight, as a smile reappeared,

“smiling is easy and shouldn’t be feared.”

The Burning Bridge

I came upon a burning bridgeas I traveled the byways of life.

A bridge all aflame in the blackened night,that at first, caused terrible strife.

I didn’t dare cross the bridge,too afraid at the fiery sight.

I wondered, and pondered, and then prayed for help,until I saw an old man in the night.

The man was blind, yet went to the bridge,as if fearless he crossed it with ease.

He turned to me and cried, “Come along son”,but I hesitated, and was weak in the knees.

The man called out “listen to me,I’ll lead you safely to the other side.

Close your eyes and follow my voice,until you are at my side”.

I closed my eyes and followed his voice,until I arrived at his side.As I opened my eyes I turned around,and discovered, to my surprise,the bridge not aflame,

and the sun in the sky.I was puzzled and wondered why.

The old man, now young, came to my sideand then looked me in the eyes.

The bridge, you now know, was never aflame,the night was as bright as before.

Beside the river bank,the tired wanderer sank -into a sand trap of self-bereavement,abandoned and alone sat he.

He felt rejected,cast off and dejected -was fellowshipped by fear, and longed to be free.

The butterfiller and the caterflywere two of the most curious creatures.The one, a butterfly, acted like a caterpillar,while the other, a caterpillar, tried to fly like a butterfly.

He had lived a good lifeand wrote one last note -to his loved ones he’d be leaving behind.He told them he loved them and not to fear,that everything would turn out fine.

A Brief Message from Jerald to Piano Students and Parents...

If you come to piano lessons each week and walk away from your lessons and only learn about music notation, rhythm, and dots on a page, then I have failed as a Music Mentor™. Life lessons are just as important, if not more important, than music lessons. I would rather have you learn more about goal setting and achieving, character, dedication, and personal improvement. To have you learn to love music, appreciate it, and play it, is a wonderful by-product you will have for the rest of your life - a talent that will enrich your life and the lives of others. To become a better musician is wonderful and important, but to become a better person is more important. As a Music Mentor™ I want to mentor students to be the very best they can be. If you choose not to practice, you essentially choose not to improve. This is true in any area of life. Everyone has the same amount of time allotted to them. What you choose to do with your time, and where you spend your time, has little to do with the activities being done and more to do with the value attached to each activity. I believe it’s important to be well-rounded and have many diverse interests. I want students to enjoy music, to learn to be creative and understand how to express themselves musically - either by creating music of their own, or interpreting the music of others - by arranging and improvising well known music. In addition, I encourage students to play sports, dance, sing, draw, read, and develop their talents. I want them to be more than musicians, I want them to learn to become well-rounded complete individuals. Above all, I want everyone to continually improve and do their best no matter what they do or choose to do. I encourage everyone to set goals, dream big, and be the best they can be in whatever they choose to do. Life is full of wonderful choices. Choose the best out of life and learn as much as you can from everyone - everywhere. I prefer being called a Music Mentor™ because I want to mentor others and help them to live their dreams.

Your life is your musical symphony. Make it a masterpiece!
