Act “As If”...

Act as if you are confident - even if you are not.Confidence, you will find, is a state of mind, the fulfillment of attitude evolving with time.

True confidence is a trait of character, not a boastful or prideful talk.

Always act with sincere humility, then with true confidence you will walk.

Act as if you are affluent, even when you’re the beggar in need.Wealth you will find, will often leave you behind,if its attainment will make you unkind.

True wealth is not measured with money, but with love, and knowledge and health.

Act as if you’re least of all men,and then you shall find true wealth.

Act as if you are noble, even if your nobility’s numb.

Act as if you are a servant, even if your own kingdom has come.

When you act “as if”you are foretelling your fate,

your future is already known.Act as if it is possible,

and the seeds of fulfillment are sown.

If Only...

If only men would humbly admitthe faults and wrongs they’ve done -

If only children remained innocent, uncorrupted as oft they become.

If only lovers remained in love, never quarreled, bickered or fought -

If only strangers wouldn’t feel estranged, unwanted, unloved, and unsought.

If only women were treated as women,as angels sweet and divine -

If only people would treat each otherwith that same thought in mind.

If only there were no poverty,no homeless, or hungry, or lost -

If only we helped each other out, regardless of what the cost.

If only we paid more attention,to the problems and needs that abound -

If only we cared more for others, how much love in our lives could be found.

If only we wept more often, and let our souls sing out -

If only we laughed out loud now and then, and befriended and served our fellow men.

The Journey Before Me

The Journey before me is a difficult oneIt’s a perilous path to walk.

It is laden with thorns and treacherous traps, strewn with glass and rock.

Pitfalls surround me, the darkness engulfs me,black as night is the day.

Terror abounds and sickness compounds frightening my health away.

Calamities come, decay descends,Sorrow stays too long.

Disease ensues, my spirit’s sinkand everything turns out wrong.

Yet up ahead in the distance before meI see the light of day.

The darkness fades, the sickness subsides,my troubles have gone away.

Though terrifying the trail may be,my spirit is strengthened, my soul is set free.

Ignorance turns to intelligence, fear turns into faith.

Troubles turn into triumphs -in life this is commonplace.

The “As If” Principle...by Jerald M. Simon

Where Are the Men?

Where are the men who valiantly fought, for freedom and virtue and truth?

Where are the men who are honest at heart, who are pure as the innocent youth?

Where are the men who openly weepwith women when they mourn?

Where are the men who are strong as an ox,and gentle as a newborn?

Where are the men of character, stalwart, faithful, and true?

Where are the men who love their wivesand never their vows would undo?

Where are the men of substance,of honor, and pride, and self worth?

Where are the men with courage,to stand up and challenge the earth?

Where are the men with manners, with morals, and values, and heart?

Where are the men unafraid to be menwho are willing to do their part?

Where are the men who are manly men, gentle, noble, and true?

Where are the men who know what it means to be men?

Are there really so few who know what real men do?

The “As If” Principle...by Jerald M. Simon

Let us be men, courageous men unafraid to do our part.

Let us be stalwart, faithful, and true, with morals, and values, and heart.

Let us be men with standards, convictions, faith, and love.

Let us be good men and great men, with assistance from above.

Men of Honor

There is a special bond of brotherhood,a faithful fraternity,

that exists between men of honor, who know what real men should be.

They are not corrupt, coarse, or profane, they are respectful, clean, and pure.

They do not belittle, deceive, or disgrace, their course is steady and sure.

Happy Homes

Happy homes create healthy hearts, habitats filled with love.

Happy are they, who oft look heavenward, for help from up above.

I Believe In You

I believe in you.I believe in all that you can do.I believe you’re intelligent. I believe in your dreams.I believe circumstance is irrelevant, it never is quite what it seems.

I believe in your abilities.I believe in your word.I believe you’ll do what you say you will do,because I believe in you.

You are capable, you are able. You’re more powerful than you know. You’ll accomplish what you want to accomplish, you’ll learn, and improve, and grow.

I believe in your future. I believe you will do your best.I believe you will prosper. I believe you will be blessed.

I believe in your talents. I believe in your gifts.I believe God has a purpose for you,He inspires, prepares, and lifts.

I believe in your greatness. I believe in your heart.I believe you have a mission in life, and will fulfill and do your part.

I hope you believe in yourself. I hope you believe in your dreams.I know you will do what you were sent here to do.Your life is much more than it seems.

The Courage To Continue

When others tell you, you can’t,when everyone says that you won’t,

don’t listen to them, they’re the worst of men, continue and do what they don’t.

The courage to continue, when others retreat and give up,

is a courage to always hold on to,to live life and never let up.

Everyone will tell you what you haven’t done, people often give up right away.

They prefer to quit and often say, nothing good ever comes their way.

But if you have courage and do your best, and if you continue each day,

you’ll live your life and be content, and won’t listen to what others will say!

It Is Not Enough...

It is not enough to be the best, when you know you could be better. You must do the best that you can doand don’t worry about a grade letter - and yet,

It is not enough to work life away,if you’d rather have time to vacation and play. You must have fun so enjoy each day, life is too short, don’t worry it away.

Do What It Takes

Are you determined to do what it takes? To sweat and work even when your back breaks? Are you committed to excellence -your own personal best - to give it your alleven when you don’t pass the test?

Do What Must Be Done

Do what must be done, until you can do what you choose. You make the plans and you’ll win or you’ll lose,by what you’ve done and what you choose to do.

Always do your best and always do your part, and in life you’ll pass each test, with a calm and happy heart!

Fortress of Faith

A fortress of faith is built by timeas months and years go by.

The seedlings sprout, hope’s blossoms bloom, and the fortress extends to the sky.

Our fortress of faith is our fortitude,we are strengthened as each day goes by.

But our faith is often tested, and often we wonder why.

When our health fails or we lose a job,and our faith and patience is tried,

our fortress of faith keeps us fortified,it is what keeps us going inside.

The Fellow Who’s Blind

Please by kind to the fellow who’s blind, who cannot see his true worth.

He thinks life is defined by wasting his time, with the filth and corruption of earth.

He spends his days rotting away, debased and immoral and impure.

But if you are kind to the fellow who’s blind,he’ll regain his sight for sure.

Aspirations

What are your aspirations?Tell me about your goals. What are your ambitions? If you don’t know, no one knows.

Write down what you want to do,plan out who you’ll be.Take control then follow through, and create your own destiny.

What do you want to know?Who would you like to meet in life?Where do you want to go?

Will you follow the path that’s been prepared, or will you follow your heart and soul?

Take a minute and ask yourself,“is my life complete and whole?”

What more do you need? What more would you want?Have you done all you wanted to do?

If not, you can if you think you can!Dare to dream and then, follow through.

The Weary Warrior

What befalls the weary warrior, who willfully falls to the battle’s tail?

Without exerting his forces to fight,he willingly wishes to fail.

Warriors are fighters who never give up,who advance to the battle’s front.

Unafraid to fight for what is right, and willing to carry the brunt.

They give their all to the cause -crusaders noble, and pure.

Undaunted by pain unrelenting, survivors who always endure.

But what befalls the straggling soldierwho slips away from the captain’s view, and struggles to do what he’s asked to do?When faced with decisions of right and wrong, the soldier succumbs with the wicked throng.

But warriors will always be warriors, even if they retreat; don’t despair.

For in the end they’re victorious -for each is a noble heir.

Never Quit

Never quit and never give up -quitters give up right away.

Quitting is never an option, regardless of what others may say.

When you quit, you’re the failurebecause you fail to realize your true worth.

You don’t think you will be victorious, you think success is a gift that is given at birth.

Never quit and never give up -you’ll be grateful you didn’t one day.

For if you quit, you’ll live with regret -and that is what failures will say.

I Will

I will help the helpless, and befriend the friendless, and fight for the losing side.I will learn from the learned and defend the powerless, who have washed up with the tide.

I will shelter the homeless and bring hope to the hopeless, and in harmony and peace abide.I will earn my earnings and lend a hand,to each fellow who’s at my side.

The “As If” Principle...by Jerald M. Simon

What Is Success?

Success is a series of accomplishments, woven together with work.

Success is the dreamer who does what he loves, not the slacker who knows how to shirk.

Success is a series of lines, that wrinkle with the times. It’s the wisdom of age, the all knowing sage, who knows where to draw the line.

Success is the servant to the master who knowsthe path he will walk each day.

It is given to him who has prepared a plan, and is already on his way.

Let Me Live

Let me live in a world of wisdom, where knowledge and good books abound.

Let me live in a nation of integritywhere honor and truth are found.

Let me live in a town where people come first, and neighbors become friends for life.

Let me live in a home that is filled with love, for the children, husband, and wife.

Let me live a life of service, and selflessly give all I own.

Let me live in peace and prosperity, for in life I am never alone.

Be a Leader

Be a captain and leader.Strap on your strength, mount up your morale.Capture your courage, you’ll find it at length.

Lead and inspire, teach and encourage,be good and honest too. When you walk in frontand you set the pace, others will follow you.

Inspired Productivity

When I prayed for inspiration,I was asked for perspiration. When I prayed for creativity,I was asked for productivity.Every time I prayed for an easy load, more trials began to unfold.

Now I pray for perspiration, and when I work, I receive inspiration. So I’ll pray for more productivity,to enhance, in me, God’s creativity.Every day that I pray for a heavier load, more blessings in life begin to unfold.

Trials Come to Everyone

When your back is pinned against the wall, when you’ve lost your strength and you slip and fall. When your demons of doubt begin to shout, and make you cower and crawl -

Look to God and praise His name, don’t be bitter and never complain.

Trials come to everyone, the rich, the poor, the sinner and saint. But God is always here for usregardless of man’s complaint.

Everything

All I ask is for everything -your attention, your strength and your heart.

Do your best no matter what you do,and finish everything that you start.

All you need is persistence, courage and faith and a smile.

Good things come when you whistle and hum,it’s the hope that makes life worthwhile.

Standing Still

At times, life stands still. The incomplete becomes complete, the bad turns good, the sour - sweet, the forces of evil from good retreat.

Time stands still and people change. They make amends and change their ways.

Standing still soothes the soul, it calms the raging tide.It gives us time to meditate,to ponder, think, and pray.It gives us time to listen to what others have to say.

At times, we all must stand still. When we are incomplete - we long to be complete, the bad within us becomes good, the sour - sweet, the forces of evil from us retreat.

To make time stand still, we all must change. We must make amends and change our ways.

Standing still makes us whole, and lets love and peace reside. It gives us hope as we demonstratethat we listen, think, and pray.It gives us comfort when others listento what we have to say.

At times we mustn’t stand still. There is still much work for us to complete. The bad around us must become good, the sour - sweet, and as we do our part, the forces of evil from others will retreat.

Sleep While You Can

Sleep while you can, rest if you must,

then when you awake, you’ll be rested I trust.

The familiar expression,of early to bed...

was written, I think,to inspire your head.

Sleep is rewardingafter we work and we play,

but don’t sleep too long,or you’ll ruin your day.

Be healthy and wiseas Franklin suggests.

Do your best each day,and get plenty of rest.

The Vanquished Victor

The vanquished victor was left to die, after his last battle cry.For they thought him weak, since he couldn’t speak, and assumed he’d give up and die.

“Not so”, cried his captain, who arose from the earth, who’d befriended the victor before.“The vanquished victor’s a friend of mine,he’ll live and he’ll fight once more.”

So the vanquished victor arose from the earth, with his captain at his side. They continued their fight well into the night, and much to the others’ delight -the vanquished victor and his courageous captain, together did faithfully fight.

At times we are captainsand defend those too weak, who have fallen to earthand are too frightened to speak.

In turn, when we fall, our captains will call. They will stand by our side, they will help us be strong, that in life we may know, where we belong.

The World’s a Better Place

The world’s a better place, because you do your part, because you live in such a way, that touches every heart.

The world’s a better place, for what you know and say,for what you’ve seen and heard each day,how you always help others to find their way.

The world’s a better placebecause of how you live, you serve and lift and sacrifice, you’re a giver who loves to give.

Count on Me!

You can count on me to be there when you fall. You can count on me to see you through it all.

Count on me to pick you up,I’ll carry you when life’s been unfair.Count on me to cry with you, when life beats you down and you’re in despair.

You can count on me because I can count on you. We’re in this life together, as friends that’s what we do.

Help Me Father

Help me Father, to learn and grow, there’s so much more that I don’t know.Life is a lesson I learn each day,I stumble and fall and lose my way.

At times it seems I do not learn,I do not grow, nor do I earnthe rights of passage paved for me,to give me life and set me free.

Help me Father, to yearn to know,to do much more now that I’ve grown -to learn life’s lessons every day, even when I stumble and lose my way.

Learning From Adversity

Adversity is my teacher, and I have much to learn.

He humbles me when I need humbling, but each lesson comes in turn.

For adversity tries my patience. At times he’s ruthless, unkind -

but adversity is my ally, and the greatest teacher I’ll find.

Listen

When I tell you in a rhyme, you think I waste your time. When I tell you in a song, you never sing along.

I try to tell you with the light, from the stars at night.I try to tell you in the day, from the sun’s warm ray,but you never seem to listento what I have to say.

We all must listen with our ears, with our hearts, and souls, and minds, and as we listen He will calm our fears, and envelop us in His arms.

All Aboard!

“All Aboard!” the conductor roared,to the masses who stood by the train -to the men and the women, and the dear little childrenwho stood out in the rain.

“You’re in for an adventure, the ride of your life, one you’ll not soon forget.Just board the train, then we’re off again,on the wonderful adventure of life.”

“The train speeds upand the tracks unfold, and we twist and turn as we go.Life’s ups and downsturn us all around,as we experience, learn, and grow.”

“Our train of life moves us here and there - traveling to and fro,we learn about life from what we do not know, and that is what makes us grow.”

The Educated Man

I sat beside a wise old man,who had lived a grand old life,a man who had seen some wonderful daysand sadly, plenty of strife.

We spoke of his travels, I laughed at his jokes,we talked as if old friends were we.And then with a stern solemn tone in his voice, he said, “Son, nothing in life is for free.”

“You must faithfully work every day of your lifelong hours at times is your lot.At times you will struggle and sacrifice much,at times you will lose the battles you’ve fought.”

“But never give up, my bright young friend, along with the pain and the strife -is a purposeful life filled with hope and with love, one with meaning and help from above.”

“Life is a treasure, a gift we are given,a blessing that oft is disguised.Too often life’s taken for granted, rejected, ignored, and denied.”

“But don’t give up on life, my boy, never stop living your life, my boy.Thank God and heaven to be alive and living, and treasure the life you’ve been given.”

Fist Full of Fire Flies

I caught a fist full of fire fliesone dark and lonely night. The fire flies were full of light, they lit my hands right up.

The fire flies grew brighteras darkness settled inthe darkness thickened, the light disappeared, but my fire flies glowed within.

I wanted to take them home with meto light my path ahead, but something told me not to,so I left them there instead.

The road I trod seemed lit with love,a path prepared for me,‘twas something of a wonder, but not always did I see.

When fire flies illuminate - our minds, and hearts, and souls - when unseen powers orchestrate our lives, and fates, and homes -when all about seems out of place, disturbed, depressed, and cold, the lights that others share with us,we must take into our homes.

The Beggar and the Bourgeois

The beggar and the bourgeois,*were about to break their bread.

The one bowed his head to pray, the other, had not a good word to say.

The one envied the well-to-do,the other pitied the poor.

They both hoped for better days, but both thought work was a bore.

The beggar and the bourgeois, often agreed to disagree, about the haves and the have-nots,those with everything, nothing, and in between.

The beggar and the bourgeoisreally are one in the same.

The one has nothing and does nothing about it,the other has everything and does nothing with it.

It’s sad and weak and intolerably lame.

*A bourgeois (pronounced boor-zhwa) as defined by the American Heritage dictionary, is “(1) One who belongs to the middle class, and (2) Overly concerned with respectability and possessions”.

Within Each Hour

Within each hour, there is a powerthat strengthens and changes all men.

It begins when we cherish each hour,as if on it our own lives depend.

What’s our time worth?Do we value each day?

Do we play with our children,or do we work life away?

Within each minute, are moments so dear,so precious and priceless and pure.

They must be honored, they must be cherished -our time is worth so much more.

The power held within each hour, must not be lost, whatever the cost, for what we do or do not dowith each second, each minute, and each hourwill hang over our head long after we’re dead -it’s our most precious and humbling power.

Fight Until It’s Fought

Battle of Truth

Every day the battle of truthis fought and victims fall,

innocent bystanders injured and hurtas lies are spread to all.

We must fight for truth,we must choose the right,

we must do the best that we can. This battle of truth must be fought

by every child, woman, and man.

The Last One Standing

There is a story of the well worn worker, who worked till the day was through,

unlike his fellow workers, who did the least they could do.

He was the first to arrive at work each day,and the last one standing each night.

He did what was best for his company, for he only would do what was right.

Be Courageous

Be courageous, when others cower in fear,be optimistic, when others think doom is near.Be an example, when others have lost their way,be a better person than you were yesterday.

The Past, Present, and Future

The present presented a problem, the past seemed too far behind,

the future too distant before me -a dilemma had formed in my mind.

I rarely remained in the present, too preoccupied with the past.

I frolicked for fun in the future, but sadly it never did last.

My past, present, and future, fought for space in my mind.

I rarely accomplished much each day, procrastinating my present away.

Instead of being present, I presently portray

a man who’s lost in time each day,and cannot find his way.

The past, present, and future, are entities of great worth, and yet -

too many never open the present before them, looking ahead in fear, or behind in regret.

A Faithful Friend

A faithful friend is one who will sit, with you through the storm.

One who will kindly listen and nod -one who is sincere, honest, and warm.

Some friends are fair-weather friends. They’re friends when the weather’s fair.

As soon as it storms, they disappear -they simply vanish into thin air.

A faithful friend is a necessary friend, one who will be with you to the end.

One who will talk and walk with you every step -one on whom you may always depend.

A faithful friend may at times correct, with honest intent when one’s erred -

but the faithful friend will always remain,by their actions, true friendship’s declared.

Regret

I’ve risen to the top of the corporate chain, experienced success, wealth, and fame -

seen fortunes won, and seen fortunes lost, but it’s sad to know how much of life it has cost.

Castles Made With Clay

I made sand castles in the sand, beside the ocean shore.

The water surged and the waves crashed down, upon the ocean floor.

Castles will come, and castles will go,with each emperor and their troubadour,*

but ocean waves never cease to end, there will always be more in store.

So when waves crash down upon your crownand all seems lost at sea -

begin again, for the waves never end, life must be lived through calamity.

*A troubadour as defined by the American Heritage dictionary, is (1) “One of a class of lyric poet-musicians of the 12th and 13th centuries in Province and Northern Italy.” The fact that an emperor would have his own personal troubadour signifies his need to be entertained and cheered up when the waves came “crashing” down on him.

It’s out of place on any face, and leaves an awful sting.

With God As My Witness

With God as my witness, I solemnly vow,to change how I live - right here and now.I will stop wasting my time.I will do my best.I will learn life’s lessons and pass each test.

With God as my witness, I will live here and now.I will follow my heart, and listen instead, to the promptings that come, then I will be led.

With God as my witness, I will not be ashamedof the noble birthright that bears my name. For I am an heir and God is my king.I will raise my voice and praise His name, for this is the song I was born to sing.

Be An Example

Be an example to the world around you.Others are watching right now.

Be an example to your neighbors beside you, even if you at times don’t know how.

People are always watching you, where you go, what you say, what you do.

So be the example and always be true -people are watching...you never know who!

Did It Ever Occur?

Did it ever occur to be polite? To show respect and do what’s right? To say please and thank you?Be courteous and kind?To give and serve all mankind?

Did it ever occur that you were a light? To others who were lost in the black of their night? To be an instrument in the master’s hand?To be an example throughout the land?

Live your life as best you can.Be a better person, be the best “you” that you can.Help mankind learn to do what’s right, that all will know how to follow God’s light.

A Stranger To Excellence

Don’t be a stranger to excellence.Don’t say you tried and failed to be your best, that you merely tried to pass each test.In all your days upon the earth, you’ve been given opportunities from the time of your birth. You’ve seen so many fleeting things, that came and went and soon were gone. Many at most were always wrong -but if you always do your best,in the end you’ll pass each test.

Tomorrow

I left yesterday, searching for tomorrow.Along the way I encountered today, and she said I could borrow -an hour or two to help me get through, this journey I’d begun.

The sun above began to sag,I saw tomorrow begin to drag.I quickened my pace and lengthened my stride,my joy and zeal I could not hide.

I knew tomorrow I’d one day find, yet as I crept to capture my time, tomorrow fled, yet once again and left me far behind.

The rising sun crawled up the sky, scaling the heavens whilst I did cry,for I had almost within my reach, tomorrow’s treasures unknown, to teach.

So many a traveler, traveling his trail, hath journeyed in search, without much avail, for a dream of tomorrow comes only tomorrow, just after the rising sun, hath scaled up the heavens - with earth as its haven, proclaiming the new day’s begun.

To Be All Alone

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”Have you ever heard a sillier thingthen to listen to nonsense and rubbish like that?I admit it might be, very frightening to be,brutally beat by a bat - but it would also be,much more frightening to me,to be called names that hurt, and see people treat me, and others like that.So I’m partially afraid of the sticks and the stones, but I’m simply appalled, that from the actions of others, I’ll be alone.

Justification

When can a man justify that he is a man?And how can we ratify, when a boy becomes a man?How old must he be, and how much must he weigh? Can we condemn his height? Will we ever really see?

A man is what he makes of himself, and what others around him have helped him to be.He simply becomes what he always has been. It’s not a question of “when a boy becomes a man”,but rather, the way he lives, for that justifies the man. What he does helps him become who he always was.

A Son’s Rainbow

I held the little rainbow within my little hand.

I looked at every color with its sparkling little strand.

My eyes I opened widelyas I saw each color fade,

within my hands I held the strandthen openly displayed,

to all the world round aboutin all the distant lands,

a rainbow with its beautysecured within my hands.

That rainbow of so long agono longer can be seen.

Let me tell you why that isand what the rainbow means.

That rainbow was a gift to me,my mother did bestow.

She told me, like the rainbow,my worth I soon would know.

I’ve walked along that rainbowthroughout my little life,

and thanked my little fatherfor his darling little wife.

I think I’ve heard somewhere beforea rainbow comes from Heaven’s door.

Calm the Raging Tide

The stormy sea in front of me has raged its war of misery -

and pouring down calamity, it drowns my life-long liberty.

I besiege the right to own -to live my life - now let it be known

that life can’t die nor ever willwhat love this life can help me feel.

The trying times and tempests come,to mock my courage and say I’m done.

The fire-flood of ages pasthas haunted me once, yet shall not last.

With turmoil and grief the beast did roamhe plundered and nearly destroyed my home.

What melancholy, did appear, when sadness and sorrow did house so near.

Never have I been afraid to try, even though failure loomed o’er my head.

Never have I been too afraid to tryand overcome failures when others have fled.

Never have I been ashamed of my name,of my family, my faith, and my birth.

Never have I been embarrassed to crywhen a loved one was taken from earth.

Never have I been consumed by my wants, overcome by the gremlins of greed.

Solemn Prayer

My heart I open, my eyes I close,my mind is awake, and my soul is alive.

This is a token of words unspoken, which men and women must always strive

to keep and do for this is true. And by such words we seek to find, the link between the heart and mind.

The Pool of Popularity

I plunged into a popular pool, where the popular people play. They laughed and giggledand gossiped all day, discussing what others should do and say.

They only did what they heard the crowd cry, they followed the masses, but never knew why.At the popular pool, they only play. They never work - they waste each day.

It looks like fun - such a happening place, with every upturned nose and plastic face.

But it’s a pathetic pool,a very shallow and mirky pool. And when we visit, we play the fool,by following the crowd into the popular pool.

The one complained of being small, the other that he was too tall.

Neither one seemed fully satisfied -they didn’t seem happy at all.

The pebble and the rock, often had this talk.

They would gripe and whine, and waste their time,

complaining about whatthey could not change.

The pebble and the rock, decided never to talk.

They argued that theywere too different that day,

and sadly each onehad nothing nice to say.

Several years passedand the pebble and the rockbroke down and had another talk. The one felt sorry for wasted time,

My Simple Serendipity

I whistled as I walked with wonder, calmly down the lane.

Yet with each step, I sadly walked, for no one called my name.

The scarlet strands that scanned the land, from sea to shiny sea,

scarred my soul and very being -then led to my captivity.

I wrestled with the chains of death, the sad and sweetest sound,

that led me from my mountaintop, back to the starting ground.

Yet from my journeys to and frothrough rivers far and wide,

I came to know just that much more,of who I was inside.

I walked with wonder as wisdom wandered, along the path we tread.

I pled with patience and sorrowed with sadness,

to think of what I’d said. The water flowed so dreadfully

without it’s humming song -and no one came to listen,

so alone I trudged along.

the truths my heart had shown mewhen abundance did bestow

the treasures of a love-filled life, into my heart and soul.

I whistled as I walked with wonder, lovingly down the lane,

Test of the Heart

I left my home and family with all their comforts dear,

to step into a foreign land, with forests far and near.

The Great Red Wood and Grand Blue Sprucethat sprang up from the ground,

told me of their greatest finds, throughout the land they’d found.

I leaned against the Great Red Wood, then pointed to the leaves, and asked Blue Spruce if he would grantthe leaf for which I pleased. He told me these were special leaves,

so special, they are rare, that only those who care enough,

put effort toward the dare.I asked him what he meant by this,

and what he’d have me do,for how to do the task he asked,

I didn’t have a clue.

Great Red Wood and Grand Blue Spruceboth whispered their reply -

“Climb the tree and you will see,the answers from on High.”

I climbed the tree most eagerly, yet sometimes had to rest,

and catch up with my goal aheadthat marked the final test.

And with each branch I slowly passed, the sky above drew nearer -

with ground beneath and sky above,my life seemed so much clearer.

I reached the leaf so high abovethat marked the final test,

and looked about at all aroundwith little thought of rest.

My heart was set on soaring high,my eyes looked round about,

I held the leaf within my hands, then I began to shout,

“Nothing is impossible - I have the leaf of life.”

Then silence pierced my soul again, and cut just like a knife.

I stood, and looked around -beside me swarmed a sea of trees

that sprang up from the groundthey told me of more treasures

that were waiting to be found.

A forest once filled with fearwas challenged by youth as a dreamer drew near. Each tree is filled with many leaves,

so special they are rare - that only those who care enough,

put effort toward the dare.

The Sturdy Soul

The sturdy soul has been broken before, but mended with heavenly care.

The sturdy soul is strong, but was weak, before its celestial repair.

A sturdy soul is one that’s been wronged, one that was pained and scarred by life.

But a soul will never be sturdy, until it’s been strengthened by strife.

Think Happy Thoughts

Think happy thoughts when life seems sad, positivity always outweighs the bad.

Strengthen your soul from the inside out, enlighten your mind when the naysayers shout.

Think happy thoughts when the world is down, when catastrophes come your way.

Stand up straight and never waitto help someone be happy each day.

An Open Book Test

Life is an open book test -there are resources all around.

It’s a match of purpose and destiny, where treasures await to be found.

The Baton

The baton on the floor was beaten and sore, after waving for hours each day.It was tired and knewthe music was through, but saddened to know, it had nothing to do.

The baton is the leader, and musicians will follow their leader through uncharted tunes. When dissonance clatters, it’s the harmony that matters - even if it seems different or new.

The baton has moved on, new musicians have come, but their music continues to play. The music’s not through and we’ll be gladdened to know, that in our symphony of lifewe all have room to grow.

Your Own Kind of Music

Make your own kind of music. The greatest composers, past and present, made and continue to make music of their own. They learned from the masters and then let their hearts sing.

The World Around Us

The world at times seems dark, with all its negative news.

The tragedies, anger, and strife, sends us terribly mixed reviews.

We can edit our own liveswhen we’ve written mistakes,

but the world around usis still full of heartaches.

When we see the world dimmingand the news not worth our time,

when we hear the sad storiesof mischievous glories

and our hearts succumb to despair,we can look for the good

and simply bring out the best, for the world around us

will yet pass its test.

Faith Is a Power

Faith is a power.Faith is a blessing.It’s a source

to all knowledge and truth. It’s an open gateto hope and fate,

and must be instilled in our youth.

Hold Your Tongue

Hold your tongue when anger comes, when frustration and hostility flare -

when pessimism plunders and divides men asunder

and hatred is spread everywhere.

Hold your tongue when others gossip and rant, and criticize their neighbors and friends.

Speak kind words only, uplift, and inspire, regardless of popular trends.

Be the voice of forgiveness, of reason, and peace, make the choice to be pleasant and kind.

When you hold your tongue, you’ll have peace of mind,

one of the greatest comforts you’ll ever find.

Eternal Gifts

Determination, faith, and hope, humility, patience, and love,

are eternal gifts that have been given to usfor our guidance, from Heaven above.

We must share our knowledge,we must give of ourselves,

freely and selflessly serve. We have been given these gifts that we may learn,we’ve been given much more

than we rightly deserve.

Don’t Forget To Pray

When your world around you crumbles, and your friends all cower in fear,

when your dreams and life savings quickly vanishand you feel the end is near -

Simply be optimistic, and don’t forget to pray,

God is on your side,He’s there for you night and day.

When you’ve lost the will power to carry on,when you pity your plight in life -

if you’ve doubted your self wortha time or two and don’t understand all that you could do -

Always be optimistic, and never forget to pray.

God is on your side,He’s here for you night and day.

Happy and Strong

Persevere, persist, and continue to grow.Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know.Look on the bright side, don’t dwell on the wrong, and you will live life, happy and strong.

If I Think I Can...

I can do it if I think I can, even if it takes me a lifetime or two.I’m determined to accomplish and see it through,I can do it because I think I can.

I have dreams and visions of greatness.I have goals and plans for improvement. There’s more to me than meets the eye,If I think I can, I can do it.

The Good Deed Doer

The good deed doer is very rare, almost extinct, I believe. It’s always uncertain where he will appear, and how others around him will fare.

So much good is accomplishedwhen he assists the downtrodden with care,it’s almost unknown how much good will be sown, when the good deed doer is there.

Bridges of Hope

We build bridges of hope with every thought we think, word we say, and deed we perform.

Sire Smile-a-lot

Sir Smile-a-lot was a well known knight, with a smile stuck on his face.

He grinned and laughed and smiled a lot -such a friend to the human race.

When others were gloomy, depressed, or sad,Sir Smile-a-lot smiled, and they’d feel glad.

Each day was the same, and he’d smile a lot. He’d sing, and he’d laugh when others would not.

Then one day a sad little boy came walking his way.“Sir Smile-a-lot”, moaned the young little boy,

“You smile a lot - I wish I could smile,I don’t even know how to smile.I’ve never done it before,

at least not in a long, long while.”

This saddened Sir Smile-a-lot through and through, for the first time ever, he knew not what to do.

He didn’t feel like smiling, ‘twas the most depressing news he’d ever heard.

Then he noticed a beautiful flower, and heard the sweet song of a bird.

“Young boy”, laughed the knight, as a smile reappeared,

“smiling is easy and shouldn’t be feared.”

“It’s the first thing you should dowhen you awake each morn,

and the last item removed fromthe things that you’ve worn.”

“Smell the flowers of life as you live it,sing with the birds and hum with the bees.

Smiling will help you be happy when sad,and when others see you smile

it will make them feel glad.”

“Smile each day - never let your smile slip away, wear it with pride, never sulk, never hide.

Your smile is your shield,it’s your armor and strength.

Smile every dayand you’ll help others on their way.”

Place of Refuge

There is a place of refugewhere I retreat when I’m alone and afraid.

A beautiful place God created for me,where angels and children have stayed.

It’s a place of peace and prosperity, where everyone lives in harmony.

Families are happy and love abounds, and all is as it should be.

See the Good In Others

See the good in others. There’s goodness within everyone. There is no such thing as a worthless person -only worthless traits to be overcome.

There’s greatness within each person.Look past the hardness of life.

They have made mistakes from time to timeand experienced a great deal of strife.

But be very good to others, even when you are right and they are wrong.

Bring out the light in others, and help them learn to be strong.

Infinite Light

I’m searching for a place,somewhere far away,

searching for an answer,to help me find my way.

Along the path that we must follow, along the road that we must go,

in every corner of the world, the light we seek will help us know

the truth of love and goodness dear,to guide the weak and remove the fear.

The infinite light will let us knowthe path of life we each must go.

God’s Gym

Everyday we go to God’s gym, spiritually speaking, of course.

We run on treadmills of trials, and often experience remorse.

Heavy weights are strapped on our backs, then we pull up our barbells and beams.

We’re humbled and strengthenedthen we’re weakened again.

God’s gym is not what it seems.

It’s the testing ground for greatness,of charity, patience, and faith -where our souls sweat and our backs break, and we find our purpose and place.

Invest In Yourself

Invest in yourself for the long haul.Prepare for the coming years.

Don’t concern yourself with each daily defeat -there are days that are filled with our tears.

Plan and prepare for tomorrow.Look to the future in faith.

Work night and day in an industrious way,and invest in yourself each day.

Poisoned By the Plague

The plague is a poison that pollutes the race of men -

a pathetic pawn that perverts and preysupon each citizen.

To some it is a drug, that defeats, destroys, and kills.

To others it is a hatredthat hungers, haunts, and chills.

Poisons produce problems, precarious perils of woe.

Wicked men do wicked deeds, they’ll always reap what they sow.

But people poison each of usby what they do and say.

They plague our thoughts and tear us down, and then send us on our way.

The Smell of Success

There’s a wonderful scent in the air -an aroma of hope’s gentle care. The perfume of peace and prosperity -the sweet smell of success and serenity.

The Burning Bridge

I came upon a burning bridgeas I traveled the byways of life.

A bridge all aflame in the blackened night, that at first, caused terrible strife.

I didn’t dare cross the bridge, too afraid at the fiery sight.

I wondered, and pondered, and then prayed for help, until I saw an old man in the night.

The man was blind, yet went to the bridge,as if fearless he crossed it with ease.

He turned to me and cried, “Come along son”,but I hesitated, and was weak in the knees.

The man called out “listen to me,I’ll lead you safely to the other side.

Close your eyes and follow my voice, until you are at my side”.

I closed my eyes and followed his voice, until I arrived at his side.As I opened my eyes I turned around, and discovered, to my surprise, the bridge not aflame,

and the sun in the sky.I was puzzled and wondered why.

The old man, now young, came to my sideand then looked me in the eyes.

“Young man,” said he, “You have opened your eyes, and the trouble you feared is no more.

The bridge, you now know, was never aflame, the night was as bright as before.

Your perspective changedwhen you crossed the bridge,

now your vision is clear and pure.In life, it is more in what we’re looking for,

it simply is in what we choose to behold.”

Find the positive within the problem -look for the best in the worst.

When things seem black - simply step back, and try to put first things first.

The Weak Become Strong

I’ve seen strong men broken by their weaknesses, and weak men strengthened from being broken.I’ve seen wise men confounded by simple truths, and simple men enlightened by the wisdom in truth.

I’ve seen heartaches and hunger, pain and disease, but most may be overcome with little or no ease.

We each can be strengthened in spite of our weaknesses, each of us is capable of so much more. And as we do good, and improve, and progress -there are blessings, and gifts, and rewards in store.

My Perfunctory Paralysis

My perfunctory paralysishas crippled my character so.

I’m afraid to live and second guesseverything I think I know.

My perfunctory paralysis, is an excuse and crutch that I use,

it holds me back and slows me down,it even sours my face with a frown.

My perfunctory paralysis, causes me pain every day.

It blackens my dawnwith every word that I say.

I wish it would leave me and go away.

But until I change my attitude,I have no one to blame but myself.

And this perfunctory paralysis,is the prison I’ve given myself.

Put Others First

I’ve seen you in your weakest moments, when life dealt you an unfavorable hand,

but you were the man I knew you to be,and you accepted the challenge to stand.

You braced for the blow, you fought everyday,

you were tired and weak but you stood. You fought your battles anyway,

as the determined man who could.

You pushed past the pain, you went without food,

your needs and your wants you ignored. You put others first instead of yourself.

Your life has been lived for Heaven’s reward.

The Pessimist’s View

Some people say they are realists,by proclaiming the glass is half full.

But the optimist knows it’s the pessimist’s view, and realists are the instructors

at the pessimist’s school.

People often doubt what has never been done before. They despise the day dreamers who dream,

but our reality is created from our make believe,so dare to dream what you’ve dreamed

you could dream.

Know and Do

I’ve been to the land of the know and do,where the dreamers and achievers abide.

A place where successful people dwell, and where I long to reside.

Nothing is impossible, when you’re surrounded by people who believe.

Nothing is improbable, when everyone beside you wants to achieve.

The collective power of productive peoplepropels the prodder along.

And dreamers become achievers, when they know that’s where they belong.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Looks can be deceiving, like books that are tattered and torn.

Their contents are well worth reading, but their appearance is wearied and worn.

Looks can be misleading. They may be full of filth inside

when they look appealing and clean,or they may be nice and gentle,

when they appear to be ugly and mean.

Productivity

Productivity is a powerful tool, implemented by the wise.

Once it’s ignored, you become the fool, and each day you waste - you’ll despise.

Be ambitious, be adventurous.Set goals and deadlines and then work.

Plan ahead, prepare, and defendyour dreams from each doubter’s smirk.

Most poke fun at the dreamer, whose ideas seem too good to be true.

Most don’t believe that dreams can come true, and they’ll mock and ridicule you.

But if you’re productive and persist day and night, and continue to dream with all of your might.

You will be successful in every way,as you continue to dream and work each day.

Don’t Worry

Don’t worry, everything will be alright.Light follows darkness, as morning follows night.Dry your tears, I’ll calm your fearsand help you re-kindle your light.

Don’t give in, you know you can win.Trust me, everything’s going to be alright.

He felt rejected, cast off and dejected -was fellowshipped by fear, and longed to be free.

He sank into silence, overcome by the pain -wandered for solutions, and then collapsed once again.

Beside the river bank, this hopeless wanderer drank -the dregs of discouragement, the drops of defeat -the bittersweet thirst,of the smoldering heat.

But hope hung aroundand patiently pled, that she would be found.

The Champions Race

A race was run by a champion, who’d won several races before.

He was swift and fast and knew his course, but always had more strength in store.

He wasn’t the fastest runner, now, there were many much faster than he.

He wasn’t the greatest athlete, now,but what a humbling sight to see.

He’d lost an arm fighting for his flag, and a leg at the battle’s front.

An injured veteran fighter was he,but still he fought for victory.

He ran many races before the war, with two good legs and a sturdy floor.

But now he ran with heart and soul, and fought to the finish - entirely whole.

Wasted Time

I need forgiveness for wasted time, hours and minutes I’ve lost.

I did nothing worthwhile or useful with them, and what a terrible price it has cost.

Like loose change misplaced or unaccounted for,I squandered my time away.

I gambled with life and broke each new day, thinking that time would linger or stay.

But time is a treasure of invaluable worth, more precious than silver or gold.

Its value is given from the time of our birth, and mustn’t be reserved for the old.

Character was steadfast, stalwart and good.He always did what he said he would.

Beaten By Bitterness

discarded by dignity, rejected in remorse, frightened by failure and extremely off-course.

Life had taken its toll on me -an extremely amazing ride.

The roller coaster of all roller coasters, and yet,I felt empty inside.

I felt sadly sweetened by loneliness, amused by the merriment of its dance.Dismayed by despair,

infected from its force, outcast and alone and

overcome by remorse.

But I will not let bitterness best me.I know I am better than that.I will improve each day, for now I know the way.

I will stand tall every time I fall, and bitterness will leave me

The Key To Happiness

I found a key as a little boywhen I played in the fields near my home.

I carried it with me wherever I went, and kept it until I was grown.

The key never went to a hidden door,or the secret garden of old.

It never led me to my paradise,or a treasure chest of gold.

The key never brought me any luck, never gave me fortunes, or fame,

but the key is part of who I am,and I kept it just the same.

I carried it with me wherever I wentas I journeyed and traveled abroad.

The key brought me hope, prosperity in love, and patience and peace from above.

The Life of An Empire

I ask not for chaos to destroy the mighty empire, but rather ask that charity become its fueling fire.I quiver when men quarrel,

I’m beset when they bicker and fight - when sarcasm spoils and each terrorist toils,

and the day seems darker than night.

I ask not for vengeance to avenge the pure in heart, but merely ask that each day brings with ita clean slate and a fresh new start.

Empires rise and empires falland sooner or later they’ll answer the call

to do what’s right and regain their sight, and in the end, they’ll awake from their night.

If You Come to the End...

If you come to the end of your hope and you’re weary,

If you’ve been hurt by friends in the past, and you’re leery,

If the world seems confusingand the wrong seems right,

and you feel as ifyou are losing your light...

Look around you, you’re not alone, the world understands you, you’re right at home.

The trials and pains of all mankindare similar, though different, from time to time.We each experience hope and heartache, satisfaction and sorrow, for we give and we take.

But learn from your neighbor, your mother and father,

your spouse, your child, your sister, and brother.

Humanity Hungers...

Humanity hungers for happiness.Feed them with hope, love, and acceptance.Nourish them back to life with your love.

Do What You Can

“Do what you can with what you have,

where you are” -Is what Teddy* exhorted

to those near and far.

He believed in man’s potential,on or off the field -

proclaimed that man was strong enough, with or without his shield.

Encouraged improvement,embraced enthusiasm,

fought for the faith of the faithless.Challenged with courage, defended dignity,

and strove to help the helpless.

Each of us must do what we can, with what we have, starting where we are -

for when we do, we will be the few,who will accomplish all

we were destined to do.

*Teddy refers to President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. Teddy was his nickname (the teddy bear was named after him because he refused to shoot a bear cub) and this quote was a well known quote of his.

The Wanton’s Land

I wandered through the wanton’s land, where the worrier was prone to go.

Through valleys of guilt and hills of fear,it was a terrible and hurtful blow.

I worried that I had made others cry,and afflicted them terribly so.

But I emerged and made my amends, and for it, I know I will grow.

Believe In the Best

Believe in the best, for life is a gift.Understand you’ve been blessed, that you can inspire and liftthe souls that have fallenthe ones who give up -those who have seen so much sorrow and pain.

Life is a wonderful experience.Look for the good and you’ll find it.There’s greatness in life, there’s joy all around.Believe in the best, and it will be found.

Learn and Grow

Each passing day we learn and grow, for we learn about life from what others know,

but when we think we know it all,we really haven’t learned anything at all.

I Foresee A Victory

I foresee a victoryover turmoil, frustration, and defeat -

a complete turnaround from temptationwhere sour and bitter turn sweet.

I foresee better days ahead, free from the pain that each sorrow brings -

where happiness returnsand our spirit sings.

I foresee a happy humanity, where people live in harmony -

where love abounds and tolerance is foundand all is as it should be.

Defeat

It’s easy to quit and most men do.

They quit and give up before they’re through.

They throw in the towel and quickly retreat.

They give in to fear and embrace defeat.

They say they can’t even if they can,

for the fear of failure destroys the man.

The arrows of anger pierce his soul,

corrupt his character and take control.

But there is no defeat, until the man thinks he’s beat -for the strength of a manare the words “I Can”!

Make It Happen

Never let go of the dream you dared to dream. It takes guts to envision the future. It’s glorious to make it happen.

See the Potential

The artist, the sculptor, and the poet, live in a world of their own.

They imagine and create, they dream and contemplate. They experience beautyand creation’s fate.

They see the potential, within the mold of clay. The blank manuscript of beauty on its way.

The artist, the sculptor, and the poet, perceive what cannot be seen. They understand their true worth, and search for the beauty on earth.

The Fellow

There’s a fellow who’s known by many names,he’s the visionary man who dreams.

He’s the captain and leader who plans and prepares, whose life is much more than it seems.

The fellow is brave, yet gentle and meek,he’s outgoing and confident

and knows when to speak.

The man who’s known by many namesserves and leads his fellow men.

He helps them be better, to improve, and take part,to increase their wisdom and share their heart.

The fellow who’s known by many namesis an exemplary man who cares.

He listens to his heart and lives by the truth, and keeps others continually in his prayers.

The Rope of Life

Worth Living For

Life is worth living for, worth learning and trying and enduring for. There’s a wonderful road worth traveling on,where the great people walkand the weak become strong.

There are blessings and lessonsthrough the trying times, from the failures and follies and fear -and though there is pain, there is also joy,and our loved ones are ever near..

Overcome By Life

I’ve seen many a man overcome by life, troubled by the obstacles they face -

daunted by dilemmas, perplexed by problems, living and dying in disgrace.

Life has incalculable uncertainties.Unforeseeable tragedies arise -

but all in all, it’s a blessing, and helps us to open our eyes.

When we are overcome by life, and overwhelmed by the perils we face -

it gives a chance to look at ourselves, and discover our purpose and place.

Tell me the truth I need to know.Help me improve each day.

Help me discover, to want to know,to learn about life on my way.

professors, scholars,any listening ears.

I’ve met with mentors,family and friends -

I meditate and pray, I hunger and thirst, for the knowledge and wisdom I need.

And with each thought, and with each prayer,I am discovering truth indeed.

Constant Companionship

Are You?

Are you dependable, are you true? Are you doing everything you should do?

Are you humble, are you sincere? Are you satisfied and glad to be here?

Are you afraid of the future before you? What have you learned from the past?

What are your thoughts about ethics and work? Will they continue to last?

Are you a believer, or do you doubt? Are you easily swayed when the crowds begin to shout?

Are you at peace with the decisions you make? Are you committed to each path you take?

Are you reluctant to make corrections and change? What would you change if you could?

Are you excited to live life each day,and give life everything that you should?

Ask yourself, “Are You?” -and then wait for the answers to come.I think you will open your eyes and see you’re better prepared than you thought you’d be.

Words Become Weapons

That which we say,may come back to haunt us one day.Words become weapons,

they hurt and destroy. They tear lives apart,

they embarrass and annoy.

Words wound the soul, they cripple and control. They wreak havoc recklessly,

and hungrily hover to hurt -make pure souls filthy,

and cover their victims with dirt.

Words become weapons, and weapons ruin lives.

They twist and they torture, like sharp, unrelenting knives.

Skepticism Met Cynicism

Skepticism met Cynicism, and they were cunningly seduced by each other.Neither one seemed skeptical,

their cynical natures beguiled, they both began to act absurd -

they were quite uncontrollably wild.

Cynicism coaxed Skepticism, though scared as she was, she listened.

Their cynical plan unfolded and grew, and Skepticism shuddered as all skeptics do.

The two were a pair of misfits,of sorrow and pain and fear,

and the two joined forces then and there,to corrupt hopeful minds that are bright and clear.

So if you become skepticalor cynically speak with disdain,

you might be traveling with this terrible pair -and with them you’ll lose,

you’ll have nothing to gain.

What is required of the pure in heart? What are the essentials we need?

What is the purpose of honor in life, and why is there hatred and greed?

The Myth and The Moral

The man, the myth, and the moral, were walking through town one day.

The man told the myth about the moral, and then sent them both on their way.

The moral entered one town, the myth into another, and the man watched closely as time passed by.

The one town became productive, the other filled with perils and woes,

and the man can choose what he wants, and decides to which town he goes.

Be Optimistic

Be optimistic, think happy thoughts.Be positive and cheerful and bright.

Be considerate and thoughtful, and always do what is right.

Optimism is infectious, when you truly believe in the best.

It’s contagiously advantageous,yet sometimes becomes a test.

When faced with true failure, when we’re hurt and alone, when we’re facing difficulties and trials unknown -optimism will help us if we think it will.

Optimism opens opportunities. It strengthens our belief in the best.It has been given to us to empower us,and with it we will pass every test.

Optimism Defined

Optimism, as defined by the American Heritage dictionary, is (1) “A tendency to expect the best possible outcome or to dwell upon the most hopeful aspects of a situation.” (2) “The doctrine that this world is the best of all possible worlds.”

Always be optimistic. Optimism is the best prescription anyone can recommend. Think about the best in life and expect the best results out of life. Optimism will change the way you see the world.

For the very first time, he began to see, that life was more than what it seemed to be.

He thought more about his potential, and began to dream and prepare.

His options expanded before him.He found he could go anywhere.

The optimistic optometrist, opted to open his heart -

to understand what he’d do with his plan, and where he’d like to start.

He felt more like living -helping those who needed his care.

And the optimistic optometrist, began living then and there.

Defenders of Our Cause

There exists a division that has long since divided the nations of humanity. We stand united in a divided world where love is constantly attacked with hatred. We live in a time where the sweet are being slandered by the sour apples from rotten trees which have united their roots in revenge. We must give our names and pledge that we will aid the weary and help the distressed. We are captains of courage, defenders of our cause.

I Do Not Walk Alone

I do not walk alone. There are many who stand beside me.

I do not speak on my own. There are many voices that cry behind me.

My thoughts are not my own.I have learned from the great ones before me.

My faith has continually grownfrom the trials that have come upon me.

I do not learn on my own. There are countless teachers who teach me.

I do not cry alone.Others continually weep with me.

We do not live life alone. Each of us is a thread in the fabric of life.

We cannot live life on our own. Each is connected through joy and strife.

Life Lessons

In life, we are not alone. Each of us has been helped by another and each of us has a responsibility to help those around us. At times we are students, learning from the great teachers before us. At times we are asked to teach and lead by example. When this happens, we must not forget we are still being taught and learning from those who came before us.

Guidelines To Greatness

Goals are the guidelines to greatness. They’re markers who measure success.

They’re portals to perfection, and help give direction,

and make sure we continually progress.

Goals lay the groundwork. They build and direct.

They never tear down, and they never reject.

Goals can inspire us to be better than we imagined we could.

And with their help we improve and advance, with goals we’ll obtain everything that is good.

Life Is Not About You

Life is not about you. It’s not about what you want to do.Think about others and put their needs first.Help others succeed and improve.Learn to be humble, be teachable and meek, help others find the happiness they seek.

Life Had Passed Me By

I had fondly found my purpose, positioned myself in my place,

taken a look at my life through the looking glassand discovered a frantic face.

My life had passed me by.The passenger’s seat was mine.

I idly stood by and watched my life go,and quite frankly, I felt just fine.

Many of my dreams were gone. They vanished and disappeared.

But new dreams appeared and took their place, and I mused at my focused face.

Something within me had changed.I saw the world through clearer eyes.I pressed forward with purpose and heart.

Life became meaningful, wonderful, and newas I found new dreams I’d like to pursue.

Time had changed me,and I knew there’d still be time to change.

Life has not passed me by.There’s much to experience

if I am willing to try.

What “ist” the Problem?

The terrorist kissed the anarchist, and the two corrupted each other. The theorist and the theologist always argued with one another. The communist and the socialistdespised and annoyed each other. And the psychologist and the anthropologistkept blaming their faults on each other.

The egotist dismissed the moralistwhile the ventriloquist challenged the vocalist. The lobbyist clung to the capitalist, and the humorist hissed at the humanist.

The soloist dismissed the accompanist. The idealist ignored the perfectionist. They all coexist and yet none will resistthe chance to bicker and complain.

The satirist, the plagiarist; the actor and the novelist;the analyst, the essayist, the teacher and the specialist,

You see, there really “ist” a problem, when we insist that we’re better than the rest.Instead, make a list,of everyone to assist, and the problems that do exist, you’ll soon readily dismiss.

Far Off In A Future Time

Far off in a future time, when my troubles have come and gone. When the worries of todayhave vanished away, and I can happily walk along.

I’ll smile and think of days gone by,when the problems that exist did abound.I’ll fondly think of those trying times, and that through them my character was found.

Through the problems I faceand the pain I endure,I grow stronger and wiser each day.And somewhere along my journey through life, the present problems will pave tomorrow’s way.

An Incomplete Soul

I spy a man who’s bitter and sad,a troubled and incomplete soul.A man who’s been pained by the sorrows he’s gained,a man who is not quite whole.

I look in the mirror and long to progress.I pity the plight that I’m in.I don’t know how I could have fallen behind.I’m losing and fear I can’t win.

But you inspire me to improve and do better. You push me and prod me along.I feel more complete and somehow whole, and know someone else is watching out for my soul.

Right the Wrong

Let well enough alone.Leave it be and do not groan. So you’ve missed your stop -simply move on.Don’t give up,right the wrong.

Be Confident

Be confident in what you know you can do.Don’t listen when the world spreads lies to you, about your worth and what you must do,to keep up with the Jones’ who live beside you.

“Know thyself and to thine own self be true”,there are many who follow, but leaders are few.Don’t be afraid, believe in yourself.Trust your ideas and follow your dreams.

Be confident in knowing who you are.Be true to yourself and what you believe.Follow your heart and don’t be afraid, believe in yourself and what you’ll achieve.

Confidence

Confidence is a wonderful attribute. Confidence creates character. It shapes and molds mankind. Those who act with confidence decide to be in control and charter their course through life. You are courageously sailing through the stormy seas. Navigate confidently with determination and heart. Confidently make decisions that will help you be a better person. Confidence means knowing your strengths and making them stronger and learning your weaknesses and trying to eliminate or improve them as best you can. Be confident. Be courageous and do what you were born to do.

The Oak and the Acorn

The oak and the acorn, stood side by side one day.

The tiny acorn marveled at the mighty oakand then quietly turned to say:

“Mighty Oak so tall and strong,so wise and old and grand.

How can a tiny acorn like me,rise up and take a stand?”

“I’m just a tiny acorn, weak and timid and small,

but one day I want to be like you, majestic, mighty, and tall.”

“My little, tiny acorn”,the great oak stately said,

“For now just be an acorn, don’t try to jump ahead.”

“Day by day you’ll learn and grow, the wind will make you strong.

Reach for the sky, look to the light, and weather each storm when it comes along.”

“Through snow, and rain, and thunderstorm, which will badly beat you at times -you’ll gain experience, wisdom, and power,

you’ll improve and progress each day.My tiny, little acorn,

I have already paved the way.”

My Pledge

I pledge within my soul, without deception, yet in control. To boldly press forward, to humbly begin. To greet each day, to challenge and win.

My time is so short, my days slip away, yet I am my anchor, to go or to stay.To live to the fullest, to fight for the truth. To challenge my heart and rekindle my youth.

In every circumstance I will avail, whether I stumble or do prevail. My heart still will beat though I think to retreat. In depths of despair, I won’t find defeat.

Each day I’ll arise with love in my eyes, with hope in my heart, that today I will start,to open my heart and mind with this light -that all may know how to follow the right.

My feet they will follow the path they’ve been shown. My pride I will swallow, and humbly I’ll follow, this path, which will lead to my heavenly home.

My mind will devour its heavenly feast,my soul will not harbor its hidden beast. My eyes see clearly, yet cannot see -the blessings, present, and future to be.

I will be true to the lessons I’ve learned,to keep in mind what I can earn. For with each step my feet will tread,I know my life is being led.

Though the world around me should fall apart,I’ll keep this thought within my heart, that I may find the peace of mind -so many seekers have sought to find.

I know the truth - I’ve learned the keys,to do what’s right will not always please, the many wanderers led astray, who’ve fallen and staggered and lost their way.

I will be true and follow the plan,to live like God, while yet a man.

Follow the Truth

Follow the truthwherever it leads,

fill your lifewith virtuous deeds.

The Little Train

The little train that thought he could, thought and thought all day.

But the little train that knew he could, was up and on his way.

The one began to strategize,to project and plan and prepare,

while the other simply went to work, and was quickly going somewhere.

The one who thought he could, continued to think things through. He thought of the struggles and the problems he’d faceand that if he’d fail, he’d have to live with disgrace.

He thought of the uphill battle before him,and the burden of the load he would bear,

and before he knew it, he decided to quit, and didn’t want to go anywhere.

But the little train who knew he could, continued his climb each hour.

And the more he did, the better he felt, and was filled with ambition and power.

He climbed the hill with courage and might, overcame each obstacle he met.

And when he arrived at the top, he smiled, knowing that he’d never have to live with regret.

A Nation Undone...

The people, the places, the times -the good days, misfortunes, and signs. In every circumstance now known,we see the change that time has sown.

As poor men begging for breath to live -we plead for change that we may give, unwearied efforts to the lostwho in misfortune have gone aloft.

With fervor feeling we fight the foe,for which we know we’ll learn and grow.

As oft, it seems, by chance to be,the bond between the bound and free.Imprisoned in chains, held captive again,we see the souls of despondent men.

As kings of old had sought to knowthe power to succor, to give, to hold -for inasmuch as light gives life,we know ‘tis true there is much strife.

Yet as we seek to know the truth, the truth evades as if uncouth. For “by and by” the king once cried, this day (thou knowest) the one who died.

If all men true would humbly bethemselves for what they cannot see, then we the people, united as one, would never become a nation undone.

The Link Between...

My heart I open, my eyes I close,my mind is awake and my soul is alive.

This is a token of words unspoken, which men and women must always strive -

to keep and do, for this is true, and by such words we seek to findthe link between the heart and mind.

Self Starter

Be a self starter, don’t wait to be told.Be a self starter, you’re never too old

to encourage yourself and stand on your feet.Be a self starter, don’t succumb to defeat.

Start your engines, get ready and go!The finish is almost in sight.

Steady is the course - you’re in control, continue with purpose and might.

The Pilosopher’s Stone

I’ve searched all aroundfor the philosopher’s stone,

looking for truthfrom what others have known.

I’ve spoken with Socrates, asked Aristotle for advice,

sat down with Spinoza, and paid a great price.

I debated with Descartes, collaborated with Kant,

and pondered with Platofor the life that I want.

Goethe gave great insight,Emerson enlightened me.Bacon begged me to listen,

and sometimes we met with Paine, but I continued my searchfor the philosopher’s stone

and began at the beginning again.

Thoreau traveled with meand Epictetus was our example. The philosopher’s stoneleft me all alone,

pondering and wondering and in awe.I’ve learned so muchfrom the philosopher’s stone,

I’m amazed to have seen what I saw.

Know That I Can

The land of all that might have been, that should have, would have, and could have been -is a land that far too many know.

With broken hearts and shattered dreams, distraught dilemmas and soured schemes, too many yearn for what they should have done, what they might have accomplished and could have become.

The land of all that might have been, that should be, and could be, and might again -was a land of possibility, of dreams and hopes and plans,a land that all have longed for -a land of a million “I cans.”

This land that might have been must be,and will be if we dream and plan.It can be and should be what we want it to be,a land of the “know that I can.”

A Life Well-Lived

A man looked backat the road he’d trod,

he thought about life, and his blessings from God.

He saw each friendly face he knew, and passed beyond the curtains blue -stepped through the light

and was on his way,and experienced the birth

of a brand new day.

The man was readyfor what lay ahead,

he’d prepared for this dayduring the life he had led.

The man looked backand gave thanks to God,

for the blessing of loved ones,on the road he had trod.

Mortality

Tell me about the pain and the fearthat mortals experience while they are here.

The tragedies and trials that yet abound, the happiness and hope that still may be found.

What is it like, this mortal life, the pain and the joy that I see?

What do they feel and why do they long,to become what they hope they may be?

Mortality is a moment in time, and yet I find that it’s wasted and spent -

that mortals don’t realize how precious they are,too many waste and abuse this life they’ve been lent.

Mortality is a time for growth,to be stretched, to be tested, and to learn.

Mortals will win and lose and know, they often will get what they earn.

To Do Something Good

I don’t think of it as an obligation or a duty, but rather, as an opportunity - to serve, uplift, and edify, to teach, instruct, and glorify -to do the good that oft I should.

The opportunity to do something good, for the benefit of all around,is an opportunity I long to have,an investment that is entirely sound.

Past the Point of Pain

When you’ve pushed yourself past the point of pain, when you’ve tried and tried and tried again, when the voices are shouting and saying you can’t,you mustn’t give in, look down, or give up.You cannot look back, slow down, or stop.

Strength’s not determined by what you’ve been given, determination is strengthened by those who are driven.Pain is powerless and pathetically so.Fear seems quick, yet is terribly slow.It cannot keep up with our determination or will.Push past the pain, climb to the top of your hill.

A Winner

If you think of yourself as a winner,a winner is what you will be.If you don’t think of yourself as a winner, that is the only thing you will see.

The image of light and truth reflectthe power of mirroring what we respect.Power and knowledge walk hand in hand, life begins when we take a stand.

One foot forward reaching out, praying that each small seed will sprout.Work pays off when you follow a planand then with the winners you’ll know that you can.

Words Are Powerful Tools

Words are powerful tools, when used to do what’s good.

More often words are uttered by fools, who never knew that they could

be the slanderous remarkthat cuts men in two

or the two-edged swordthat pierces right through.

They flippantly speak and never think, with quick-witted remarks

that degrade and deride, you’d think they haven’t

any feeling inside.

With loose tonguesthey demean and derail

they harbor ill feelingsthat impoverish and impale.

But words, truly are powerful tools, when used to do what’s good!

Let us, therefore, not speak as foolsbut rather speak the good we know we should.

Footsteps That I Follow(a tribute to my ancestors)

The footsteps that I follow, were courageously taken with care.

My ancestors knew that I would follow, they knew that I’d be there.

Footsteps of faith, courage, and strength, were taken before I was born.

Footsteps, by family, from generations pastwho looked forward to the dawn of a brighter morn.

They prepared for my future, they paved my way -

they took each step with care. They knew that I was coming,

and that one day I’d be there.

More Than a Banquet

Life is more than a banquet or feast, more than a moment, more than a dream, greater than anything I’ve ever seen.

Each day an adventure, each minute a miracle -each second a spectacular scene will unfold.

Life is more than what we know,it’s greater than everything we’ve been told.

The universal brotherhoodspans the land and sea,

it teaches us how we could liveand how each brother should be.

Regardless of race, color, or breed, the brotherhood stands for the good and the freed.

The universal brotherhoodspeckles the land and sea,

its dwindling numbers astonish me -the greatest travesty.

Regardless of place, feeling, or creed, this brotherhood demands we help others succeed.

Dare to do what hasn’t been done, and you, your victory, you will have won.

The Symbol of Success

Some say, the symbol of success is wealth, others might say it’s having good health. Some count their blessings with nickels and dimes, others are burdened by riddles and rhymes.

The symbols of success aboundand are patiently waiting to be discovered and found. Each symbol of success teaches some truth, some moral, some principle, to the aged and youth.

These symbols of success are givento those who work and demonstratethe ones who constantly give their allwho uplift, inspire, and motivate.

Look Inward

When times are tough, as oft they’ll be,when you travel your road, alone and uphill. When the path is dark and you cannot see, when the corrupt deceiveand you don’t know what’s real -

Look inward and pray, for the guidance you need.Counsel with God and always take heed.Trust the inner voice within and you’ll be,delighted to discover the truths you will see.

The Ripples of Life

I rowed my boat across the stream, past the island of intent.

I rowed with strength and purpose, and overcame the currents of contempt.

The ripples of life roared with each row,I steadied my boat and was in control -

for a moment or two with purpose I rowed, then the winds of life blew a terrible blow.

I rowed my boat, determined nowto turn about and face the storm.I knew I needed the sailors’ strength, the captains’ courage and the preachers’ faithto overcome the torrential deluge.

The winds were fierce, the climate clamored;clanking, contorting, and cold -

but I moved forward and didn’t turn back, which helped me learn to be bold.

Life’s Blueprint

I need a blueprint for life,an outline of the master plan,a tour guide to lead methroughout life’s span.

There are pitfalls and detours, dead ends and closed roads,u-turns, accidents, and even unknowns;but the master’s blueprint is very clear,it gives me directions, starting here.It leads and directs and guides me along,it give me corrections to right each wrong.

I’ll follow this blueprint throughout my life, this outline of the master’s plan -and the blueprint before me will lead me along, and encourage and comfort me when things go wrong.

Rise Above

The depths to which men can falland the heights to which they each may rise,is entirely dependent upon their faith, their optimistic outlook, and belief.Their attitude can maim or change them.Their perspective will empower or impoverish them.Rise above the weight of worry, soar above the stains of sorrow.Live above the loathing life that lingers where the lazy stay - you are more than dirt or clay, now stand up tall and be on your way.

I am not content to remain ignorant,to falter or collapse, to hinder my step.I will press forward and improve each day.I will progress and find a way.

Against Myself

I fight a battle against myself, against my past and former self -the one I used to be before, the one I know I am no more.

The stranger I was, and no more am,was a frightening creature and not a man;a monstrous beast, an excuse of a man -I am grateful, that creature, I no more am.

The war has been waged, I command from the front,I give out the orders, I carry the bruntof the weight of my past, my mistakes, and my pain -to not relive my failures again.

This battle I fight, against myself, against my past and former self;is an ongoing battle, a daily struggle,a fight to the finish, a brawl to the end.

And I have met my match at lastas I duke out the demons that dwell within -the natural man, this monstrous beast, the fiendish foe that’s buried beneath.

I will fight this battle against myself, against my past and former self, the one I used to be before -the one I know I am no more.

Thoughts That Think

You can think a thought to death,by not acting out what you think you might do.You can destroy desire and cripple courage,by carelessly charading as the puppeteers pawn.

You can think a thought to deathand quickly give up before you reach the end,and too many men and women turn backwhen they’re almost at the finish line. They give up too soon and seal their fate, and then they think they have wasted their time.

Speak Up

I speak for those who cannot speak, whose voices have been silenced by fear. The weak and the down-trodden, the outcast and shorn, the many who feel distraught and forlorn.

I speak for those who dare not speak, whose voices have been silenced before. The timid souls, the wretch and recluse, the ones who have given up on themselves.

I speak for them who will not speak, who fear what their voice could do.The ones who refuse to speak their mind, the others who will not take the time,to listen to others who need to be heard -I will speak for others and share their word.

The Butterfiller and The Caterfly

The butterfiller and the caterflywere two of the most curious creatures. The one, a butterfly, acted like a caterpillar, while the other, a caterpillar, tried to fly like a butterfly.

The butterfly barely flitted, and never attempted to fly.He was afraid of heights, and would start to cry,at the thought that he would, could, and should fly.

On the other hand, the caterpillarknew he was destined to soar with the birds, and never gave heed to the discouraging words;from the ones who said he couldn’t and wouldn’t,to the others who said he mustn’t and shouldn’t.

One day the caterfly disappearedthen emerged as a creature of flight;the most beautiful butterfly any had seen, transformed, as if during the night.

And the ones who said he couldn’t and wouldn’t,and the others who said he mustn’t and shouldn’t,watched in amazement as that butterfly flew -higher than any tree ever grew.

The butterfiller and the caterflyare two of the most curious creatures. The one can fly and does not dare, while the other dreams of going somewhere.

I Am a Simple Sort of Man

I do not speak as most men do,my speech may not be the best,I do not write as most men would,I could not pass a grammar test.

I have not acquired as many skills as most,I do not have much, about which to brag or boast.I am a simple sort of man,I do the best I know I can.

I haven’t traveled very far,I do not own an expensive car.My taste is rather bland at best, and yet I’ll prepare for every test -

I am a simple sort of man,I do the best I know I can.

I know I do not know as much,as scholars, and doctors, and lawyers, and such -but I try to learn something new each day, something that will help me along my way.

I do my best with what I can,even though I am a simple man.I know I am a simple man,but I do the best I know I can.

Listen To An Old Man’s Tale

My brave, young, noble knight, come listen to my tale.Listen to an old man, who has seen far too manyyoung men get lost on life’s trail.

Times have changed from what they were, when knights were honest, noble, and pure -when a man’s word was more powerful than any deed, and when noble knights helped those in need.

Listen to me reminisce about the past, when faith was a power of substance and worth, greater than any knowledge on earth.

Times do change, but have they changed for the better?I believe they can and I believe they should.I believe they will and I believe knights could -

Become noble knights, yet once again,to inspire the souls of weakened men;to be the example that men might be,noble knights of dignity.

My brave, young, noble knight, come listen to my tale.Listen to an old man, who has seen far too manyyoung men get lost on life’s trail.

We must be the example for each page and squire, and shield and protect them from dangers on earth, and help them have faith and know of their worth.

The Purple Cow(a tribute to Seth Godin)

The purple cow walked out in frontof the plain dairy cows and said:“My bovine friends, every now and then, stand out from your black and white crowd.”

“Move about, take a break, and see the world anew.

There’s so much waiting around the bend,if you’ll do what the others won’t do.”

The cows protested and said, “We can’t,what would the other cows say?

What would they think if we changed our ways, and did something creative or different today?”

“If we stand out from the crowd, we won’t fit in, and people will notice us more.

We’ll be in the spotlight and people will seewe’ve become such an exciting, rare novelty.”

The purple cow sized up the crowdof the timid grazing herd,

and worried they never would change their ways, for ordinary cows are really absurd.

Unleash the new you - break free from the herd,be different, be exciting, and new.

There’s so much more waiting around the bend,if you’ll do what the others won’t do.

The “As If” Principle...by Jerald M. Simon

The Heart Knows the Way

Dream for tomorrow - faithfully pray, plan for your future - start today.Step forward in the direction you want to gowith purpose and might and the desire to know.

Faithfully pray for tomorrow’s dream.Start the process to secure your success -follow the course that lets your heart lead, and you will do well and will always succeed.

The Formidable Foe

The formidable foe was a sinister soulwho devoured men’s dreams and hammered their hearts.

He crushed their characterand stomped out their spirit,

but prosperous are theywho refuse to hear it.

You cannot give in to the formidable foeto the monstrous beast with a sinister soul.

You must have a dream,so hope and take heart,

and you will succeedif you dare to start!

Sincerely Yours...

Sincerely yours was penned at the endof a long life written with care.Words representing thoughts and ideas, tokens of deeds from a life that is freed.

Sincerely yours were the words that he pennedat the close of the love letters he wrote. His heartfelt words expressed what he feltand he freely shared his feelings of love.

He had lived a good lifeand wrote one last note -to his loved ones he’d be leaving behind. He told them he loved them and not to fear, that everything would turn out fine.

“I write this letter with love in my heartin humility with gratitude and faith.Do not worry about the journey before me,I’m moving on to a heavenly place.”

“With my parting words know this:that I love you and always will.I’ll still walk beside you - I’ll always be with you -my presence you always will feel.”

“We’ve learned a great deal as we’ve journeyed through lifethe memories you create will endure.Don’t live with anger, resentment, or strife -strive to remain wholesome and pure.”

“Never regret an undone deed,an unsung song, or unfulfilled dream.Live in the present and receive each day as a gift.Your life is truly a blessing, inspire, empower, and uplift.”

“I write these words with thoughts of hope,of your goodness, your future, your potential and more -there are so many more blessings ahead for you,a reservoir of love continually knocks at your door.”

“Trust an old man who has lived a long life, enjoy your children and love your wife.Never take for granted this gift of life -the gift to work and improve each day,to change for the better as you go your way.”

The letter ended abruptly - too soon. He’d penned his feelings and shared his heart, but now his new journey was about to start.

Sincerely yours was penned at the endof a long life written with care.Words representing thoughts and ideas, tokens of deeds from a life that is freed.

PROBLEM: How do you motivate boys (teenage boys in particular) to want to play the piano? What works?

SOLUTION: Let them play cool sounding music - The Cool Songs for Cool Kids™ Series (pre-primer, primer, volumes 1, 2, & 3)

A Brief Message from Jerald to Piano Students and Parents...

If you come to piano lessons each week and walk away from your lessons and only learn about music notation, rhythm, and dots on a page, then I have failed as a Music Mentor™. Life lessons are just as important, if not more important, than music lessons. I would rather have you learn more about goal setting and achieving, character, dedication, and personal improvement. To have you learn to love music, appreciate it, and play it, is a wonderful by-product you will have for the rest of your life - a talent that will enrich your life and the lives of others. To become a better musician is wonderful and important, but to become a better person is more important. As a Music Mentor™ I want to mentor students to be the very best they can be. If you choose not to practice, you essentially choose not to improve. This is true in any area of life. Everyone has the same amount of time allotted to them. What you choose to do with your time, and where you spend your time, has little to do with the activities being done and more to do with the value attached to each activity. I believe it’s important to be well-rounded and have many diverse interests. I want students to enjoy music, to learn to be creative and understand how to express themselves musically - either by creating music of their own, or interpreting the music of others - by arranging and improvising well known music. In addition, I encourage students to play sports, dance, sing, draw, read, and develop their talents. I want them to be more than musicians, I want them to learn to become well-rounded complete individuals. Above all, I want everyone to continually improve and do their best no matter what they do or choose to do. I encourage everyone to set goals, dream big, and be the best they can be in whatever they choose to do. Life is full of wonderful choices. Choose the best out of life and learn as much as you can from everyone - everywhere. I prefer being called a Music Mentor™ because I want to mentor others and help them to live their dreams.

Your life is your musical symphony. Make it a masterpiece!
