AMSP seeks to reform and strengthen math

and science instruction in pre K-12

classrooms in the Central Appalachian

region.

Page 6: THE APPALACHIAN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

Performance will be improved through the

collaboration of all partners.

A more specific AMSP goal is to eliminate

the math and science achievement gap in

the Central Appalachian region.

Page 7: THE APPALACHIAN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

Part of AMSP’s strategy is to establish an

integrated elementary, secondary and higher

education system.

Page 8: THE APPALACHIAN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

The system will feature a continuum of

learning as partners at all levels capitalize

on opportunities to be both teachers and

learners.

Page 9: THE APPALACHIAN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

The four major related program initiatives are: Pre-service and administrator education

Professional development of pre K-12 personnel

Student learning opportunities, including

parent/community engagement

Research to advance the understanding of rural

education reform

The summer institutes are examples of

professional development activities.

The summer institutes are strongly related

to the other three initiatives.

SUMMER INSTITUTES

They benefit from planning and

development of pre-service coursework that

has occurred.

They will be followed by implementation in

participants’ classrooms.

Page 12: THE APPALACHIAN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP

Evaluation of the institutes and follow-up

implementation will help inform pre-service

courses for teachers, in-service education

and instruction in K-12 classrooms.
