PRESIDENTS CORNER

Well Spring is here. All of us are enjoying the fine weather and our Florida sunshine.

All of us enjoy our time off in order to relax and to recharge. I have heard a rumor

that a little bit of physical labor is good for all of us. What all of this is leading up to is

that we need to spruce up our yards. A little bit of weeding, some trimming, first thing

you know the old homestead is staring to look pretty good. Next thing you know we get

out the old hammer and start fixing up the front façade. If we are not careful we might grab

a paint brush and then it is, Katy bar the door, the old joint looks brand new. Not only does

It look new but is does give us a certain sense of accomplishment.

Everyone knows that summer is coming. It is time to start planning the summer vacation.

We may want to visit grandma, or maybe rent a cabin in the mountains. No matter what

we may have in mind for our vacation do not forget to let someone know that you will be

gone for a week or two. Be sure and have someone pick up your mail, stop the

newspaper, etc. In other words do not make it obvious that you are gone.

Just a short note about our annual meeting. There wasn’t one. Not enough of you bothered

to send in your proxies. Because of this we did not have a quorum and so we could not have a

meeting. Next year we will try again. I can only ask that fill out your proxy and either drop

it off or mail it to the clubhouse.

Enjoy Life

LOCK IT OR LOSE IT - This is a phase that all of you should be familiar with. It is too bad that many of

you do not follow what it stands for. There are still way too many people in Winter Springs who do

not lock their car. Many of these belong to residents here in the Highlands. It is certainly an easy

matter to lock our cars. I am asking every resident here in the Highlands to just press down on that

little button or lever and lock your car each and every time you exit the car. This habit may save you

from getting robed. Simple –LOCK IT OR LOSE IT

I mentioned vacations in the Presidents Corner. One item to consider before you go is a House

Check. All you need to do is notify the WS Police Department when you are leaving and when you

expect to return. There is a form that you can fill out that is on the City Web site or you can pick up

at the police station. Then while you are gone your house will be checked to ensure that no damage

has occurred and that all is secure. Just a little extra security while you are on vacation.

Editor’s Page Here is an economical yet effective window cleaner for your car or your house. Mix ½ gallon of white vinegar with 1 gallon of water and 4 drops of blue Dawn liquid detergent. Much cheaper than commercial window cleaners. Here is a great way to stretch your grocery money. Save all of your leftover vegetables such as green beans, corn, etc. in an old coffee can or other container. Keep in the freezer until full then put in a pan with chicken broth and seasonings of your choice for a healthy and economical soup.

Spring Cleaning – Tidy up your energy usage Spring cleaning is an annual ritual practiced by millions of homeowners. Did you know that it can help you save energy and reduce your impact on the environment? While you are chasing those dust bunnies around, consider the following tips to make your home more energy efficient:

• Behind the fridge. When vacuuming and dusting, remember to clean behind the refrigerator. Dust buildup causes the refrigerator to run less efficiently.

• Around your windows. While cleaning windows, look for loose panes, cracks or poor caulking, which can lead to air leaks. In spring and summer, replace storm windows with screens to provide natural cooling.

• Light bulbs . Dust accumulation on light bulbs blocks a considerable amount of light. Wipe off bulbs to get more light for your energy dollar. Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs. They use 70 to 90 percent less energy and last much longer.

• Ductwork . Leaky ducts often result in rapid dust accumulation around heating and cooling vents, causing your air conditioning system to run less efficiently. A properly sealed and insulated duct system can save energy and money – and make your home more comfortable. Have your ductwork inspected and sealed by a quality professional. Learn more.

• Office. Every desk could use some de-cluttering. Shred unneeded documentation like older mail or statements. Save on future paper clutter by enrolling in Paperless Billing. Learn more.

During spring cleaning, you may have more laundry and dishwashing than usual. Make sure these appliances are fully loaded before running them.
