ArtsWeekly, Inc., is proud to announce that TheAquarianWeekly has been accepted into the Rockand Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives, theworld’s preeminent research collection of writtenand audiovisual materials relating to the historyof rock and roll. Current publishers/owners DianeCasazza andChris Farinas were told of the decisionto take the newspaper into the Rock and Roll Hallof Fame by library director Andy Leach in earlyJanuary.
“I spoke with Andy about the collection and hewas thrilled, even amazed that we have copies ofevery issue printed,” said Casazza. “Throughout allour moves, we’ve always maintained the archives,as they were a valuable resource when we neededto look up past information.”The Aquarian and all supplements — The EastCoast Rocker andThe Nite Owl—will be deliveredto the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Library at its new22,500-square-foot facility in downtown Cleveland.
A collection of over 1,800 issues—from 1976 on—will be sent to Cleveland.“We see this collection as a historical record of
the evolution of the music and times. It certainlybelongs in the Hall of Fame Library,” says Farinas.“New Jersey has always played a big part in therock music world, and still does. The Aquarian stillcovers the up-and-coming bands, as well as themajor acts that come through the state.”The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library’s mission
is to collect, preserve, and provide access to theseresources for scholars, educators, students, journalists, and the general public in order to broadenawareness and understanding of rock and roll, itsroots, and its impact on our society. The grandopening of the newRock Hall's library and archiveson Cuyahoga Community College's MetropolitanCampus, will be preceded by nine days of tie-inevents onSaturday, April 14, during the 2012 inductionceremonies.
James Rensenbrink,founder.
First Issue Of The Aquarian Weekly, 1969
April 2012
Founded by JamesRensenbrink in 1969, theAquarian isNewJersey’slongest running arts and culture newspaper. An alternative voice fortheWoodstock generation, it concentrated on radical politics anduncompromising ecological writings.Rensenbrink published passionatewriters expressing their exuberant love of life, sharing naturalexpressions of their own individuality while retaining a powerful voicefor Mother Earth and human rights.Over time, the newspaper gravitated to the music scene that wasexploding across the Garden State and beyond, reporting eachweek on dozens of musical and cultural happenings.Going throughits back pages, one finds a continually unraveling Jersey scenestarting with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith in the mid-‘70s toany number of current artists of the day making local and nationalwaves.Although it never relinquished its political edge, the blend ofmusic and social issues became the guiding balance of the Aquarian’sweekly agenda, and remains so today. Diane Casazza and Chris
Farinas took over The AquarianWeekly in1998, when Rensenbrink retired to Oregon, and found a third, silent partner in MarkSceurman ofWeird N.J.and theWeird Statebook series, who started with the Aquarianin 1979 and still retains a desk at the officein Little Falls.“TheAquarianwas always something special,”saysSceurman.“Therewas always somethinggoing on. I wasmore of a ‘behind the scenes’guy, working in production, but I’ve been withthe paper through all its ups and downs, andthe craziness of the times. It was a greatenvironment to be in. The deadline was onMonday, and I hadn’tmissed aMonday deadlinein the 19 years I was in the art department. Iremember laying out many of those issues that
are going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”Many well-known names in the rock music world have written andphotographed forThe AquarianWeekly, including its longtimemusiceditorMikeGreenblatt, the late Lydia Carole de Fretos, future BillboardEditor Timothy White, Star Ledger Music Editor Jay Lustig, TheBoston Globe’s JimVerniere, Mike Daly (who fronts indie rock bandMike Daly & The Planets), disc jockey Vin Scelsa, Bob Santelli ofthe National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS),Joe Dera, the late Gene Kalbacher, Catholic Priest Father CharlieCrespo (who started as an Aquarian gossip columnist dubbed“Everynight Charlie”), George Dassinger, acclaimed novelist SusanShapiro (who was published for the first time in her career in theAquarian) and Ruth Polsky (pioneering provocateur and promoterwho coveredGreat Britain and the early punk scene for the Aquarian, and who died in the line of duty on September 7, 1986 when acab jumped the curb outsideThe Limelight nightclub).Such respectedjournalists as Scott Shinder, Craig Zeller, BobMakin, JohnReynolds,JeffTamarkin, Joe Edwards, BobCianci, AnnaCerami and Rich Leeall got their starts at the Aquarian.Photographers have included BobSorce, Charlie Frick, Bob Leafe, Karen Bialecki (K.B.Shoots), MarkWeiss, Mitch Kearney, Ebet Roberts, CathyMiller andmany others.Unlikemany ofThe Aquarian’s predecessors in themusic publishingbusiness, which either folded or sold out to trendy commercialconcerns, The Aquarian has maintained its integrity and once-a-week print deadline. The newspaper certainly had its ups and downsboth financially and editorially over the years, but it still stands asNew Jersey’s most-awarded music newspaper.Timemarches on, formats change, butTheAquarianWeekly continuesto providemusic content and social issues to all its patrons, 42 yearsafter its first issue, either on the newsstands or online. From its firstoffice next to the Capitol Theater in Passaic, thenMontclair and nowin Little Falls, The AquarianWeekly is one of the few independentlyowned newspapers in the U.S., and might just be the final pioneerin original music.
