Theatre on the campus of the University of Michigan has always been respected as a key to self-knowledge, self-empowerment, and self-expression. As our department has grown and changed, we can also be proud of our commitment to the study of global theatre; to teaching the ways in which we can talk with and affect one another concerning important issues of our day; and to equipping our students with the skills and tools needed to succeed, not only in theatre, but also in fields outside of that world. As an alumna of this department, it fills me with pride and joy to remember those who have graced our stages, created art in our shops and studios, and, most importantly, taught in our classrooms during these last 100 years. I hope I speak for all of us when I say that what we learned here has been the Michigan difference in our lives, our careers, our hopes and dreams. May that truly be said for all who follow us. about Mary ZiMMerMan

Mary ZiMMerMan  (Writer) is the recipient of a 1998 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2002 Tony Award for Best Director of a Play and numerous Jeff Awards (including Best Production and Best Direction). She is an Artistic Associate of Goodman Theatre, a member of Lookingglass Theatre Co. and a professor of performance studies at Northwestern Univ. Direction/Adaptation: Metamorphoses, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, Journey to the West, The Odyssey, Mirror

of the Invisible World, Silk, The Arabian Nights, Argonautika, The Secret in the Wings, Eleven Rooms of Proust, Galileo Galilei (an opera with Philip Glass), Candide, The Jungle Book, The White Snake. In addition, Ms. Zimmerman has directed Shakespeare’s Pericles and All’s Well That Ends Well at the Goodman and Henry VIII and Measure for Measure at New York Theater Festival’s Shakespeare in the Park. She made her Metropolitan Opera directorial debut in 2007 with Lucia di Lammermoor, which she also directed at La Scala in Milan in 2014. Subsequent Met productions include Armida and La Sonnambula.
