Dear reader,

We write these lines exactly a month after the first time we met you in the Istanbul Erkek Lisesi. The last time we saw you was 27 days ago and all of them have been long and full of thoughts of an extraordinary session, a National Selection Conference which has been a success in all aspects; held in one of the most beautiful and ancient European cities, attended by the brightest of the Turkish youth, organised by one of the best Nation-al Committees and a promising Organising Committee, with officials ded-icated to the European Youth Parliament Schwarzkopf Foundation having formed a multicultural and diverse, yet cohesive team, presided by the enthusiastic Richard Royal. Thank you all for making those days special!

It is commonplace to find it difficult to cope with the all the mixed feelings after a session, especially when it comes to ones as excellent as the 13th NSC of EYP Turkey, but talking to the people we met there and stumbling upon photos from the conference uploaded in the Internet has helped a lot. The Arch was created in order to further assist us in keeping our dear memories from the session alive. Apart from its special issue handed to you as a feature of the Legacy during the conference and the one you are currently reading there is going to be one more, which is currently being edited. All in all we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did.

Yours,Dionysius and Fotis

What was the greatest obstacle that you dealt with before the session?

Yiğit: Actually there were many different organ-isational obstacles we had to face before the session, but ı am glad that none of them were too hard to solve. Transportation, panel debate speakers and coffee break sponsorship were the three biggest challenges we had to face. But besides all these, I think the greatest obstacle I had to deal was my own tire.

Furkan: Impossible is nothing. Hence, nothing to be considered as an obstacle.

What are your expectations of this session?

Yiğit: First of all and most typically, I expect that all participants and officials enjoy the session and remember the session as a bunch of very nice memories when they come back their home. I think this aspect was the one we con-sidered most important and that is the reason we have prepared all those t-shirts, sweatshirts and bracelets. And the other most important aspect was to do our best to organise a session which would be remembered as having a spe-cial quality among its predecessors and also the following ones.

Furkan: To provide an unforgettable chance for older EYPers in terms of reunion, fun and excitement whilst introducing this city of lights ,’Istanbul’, to the international participants. And to spread the word and to make the first-time EYPers love the atmosphere of EYP so that

by Dilge Imer (TR)Organising “a session” takes hard-work, patience, enthu-siasm and others. But in order to hold “an unforgettable” session, all you need is Furkan and Yiğit. They are the lovely, marvelous, energetic, hard-working Head Organ-isers of the 13th National Selection Conference of EYP Turkey. Since you only get to see them running around, we wanted you to have the chance to know a bit more about them. Enjoy the interview we had with Furkan and Yiğit!

more and more youngsters can be involved in the community in way or another. To organize a session during which they will be learning at least one thing from one another as a part of their self-development and which will always be remembered with a stupid smile on their faces. Basically, to ‘spread the love’. (in memory of the recent AYF)

What is it like being a Head Organiser?

Yiğit: It is like a huge challenge in oneself; you should deal with all tasks and problems; but at the same time it shouldn’t be actually you who is dealing with those. Then you should delegate your team very effectively, but also there are many occasions you are unable to trust on an-yone else except yourself, and you feel obliged to do many tasks on your own which are taking quite long time. Here you have to decide wheth-er to be a perfectionist or not.

Furkan: Cannot be told, must be experienced.

What is your most embarrassing EYP moment?

Yiğit: I rather wouldn’t tell that, sorry. But it was during the Tallinn IS. They will close your news-paper if I say that :D (так стыдно)

Furkan: (Laughs out loud just as he reads Yigit’s answer.) No comment.

Boxers or briefs?

Yiğit: Boxers, of course. Why? Simple, because they are comfortable.

Furkan: As you like it. (He bet no one would recognize that it also is the name of a comedy written by Shakespeare.)

An official or a delegate?

Yiğit: If possible, both.

Furkan: I agree.

The Three-Steps-Guide to

Socialisingby Delia Berner(CH)

You would like to become friends with other session partici-pants but you are a bit shy? Don't worry, try our suggestions

to get to know a person in only three steps!

Step 3: Make sure this person will remember youTake a freaky picture together. If you really want to make sure he or she remem-

bers you, make it embarrassing.

Write a little note for him or her and your name on a piece of paper – Facebook is not enough. At least I don't remember all my 38729384 Facebook friends.

Invent dance moves together. Any journalist around will be happy to film you.

Spill a drop of your drink on your partner's shirt. If you fail to be remembered pos-itively, give your dark side a chance.

Step 2: Find a topic for the first chatTell your partner that he or she looks exactly like your favourite film star. If he or she doesn't, describe a film that you will realise in your next life and get inspiration

from the face in front of you.

Do it the British way: “Nice weather, isn't it?” The adjective is variable, other pos-sibilities include “beautiful”, “interesting” or “lovely”.

Make a bet what we will eat for dinner. Make sure to lose it, otherwise your friend-ship might have its first crisis.

Discuss if the chicken or the egg was first. Watch out, there are people getting emotional with this question.

Step 1: Get someone's attentionCarry a placard around your neck offering “Free Hugs for Everyone”. Be quick – the

bigger the market of placard holders the harder the competition.

“Lose” your shoe and wait for someone to bring it back to you. Make sure also to bring back a shoe someone else has lost.

Shout out a common name and wave to whoever reacts. The choice of the name is the key. If you're unsure, try “Honey”.

Tip on someone's shoulder and ask: “Hey, you look really bright, are you an organ-iser?” Every delegate will be flattered and turn immediately red.

C8H10N4O2, also known as trimethylxanthine. This is the name of a chemical compound that has saved many lives during EYP sessions: caffeine. The mol-ecule was first isolated by the German chemist Friedrich Ferdinand Runge in 1819. Caffeine is naturally produced by several plants, including coffee beans, guarana, yerba maté, cocoa beans, and tea. For the plants, caffeine acts as a natural pesticide. It paralyzes and kills insects that attempt to feed off the plants.

But we EYPers use it in a complete different way. It actually prevents paralysis of our body after the short amount of sleep had the previous night. Oh yes, short takes a whole new meeting in EYP. What you consider short when going to school would be 5-6 hours of sleep, but, a 5-6 hours of sleep is usually what you manage to get in a whole session. If you then divide this by the number of nights in one session (3 or 4), you easily understand why it is so badly needed.

So badly that we’ve actually seen some orgas bitting their nails when running out of boiling water, some chairs crying when there wasn’t the right amount of sugar in it and some delegates shaking, knowing that the next coffee break will take place in 2 loooong hours. Ask some orgas during a coffee break, and they will tell you it’s the first thing they have planned on buying (in quantity).

Confronting

stereotypes

Featured Article

One of the things EYP aims to reach is getting rid of stereotypes that we have been exposed to in our lifes. It is a fact that people change through time and gain new qualities. Sometimes it is for the better and sometimes not, nonetheless they realise they are no longer who they used to be. That is why everytime we confront a new situation, we seek to express ourselves in the best way possible to convey our new selves.

Sadly, this effort turns out to be in vain when people start judging you by your apperance, origin, family background or religion rather than paying attention to the unique personality you have. It‘s a really disillusioning experience when one realizes it‘s not ultimately up to his own effort to decide how people are going to perceive them. This phenomenon is called a stereotype, a term deriving from Greek word στερεός (stereos), meaning "firm, solid" and τύπος (typos), meaning "impres-sion," hence "solid impression".

This behaviour is common when you‘re experiencing a brand new state of acting: without some-thing to hold on to in the context, you just seek familiar information and rely on the known stere-otypes as you don‘t have the time to get to know each other profoundly and are looking for a fast classification of the people around you. One would think that globalization would encourage you to go and make up your mind about things yourself, to lose their critical judgement when travelling and to finally let go of stereotypes. Somehow this hasn‘t been the case, though.

The challenge you face in the process of self-explanation can be both sickening and tiring. As a result, one can easiy adopt the same behaviour towards new acquaintances and nationalities, thus entering a vicious circle.

With EYP entering our lives, we had the unique opportunity of breaking out of that vicious circle by experiencing the complex diversity of humans: Coming together for an EYP session is a unique situ-ation because you spend almost each and every minute together and, more or less, you would have to open up to the other participants during teambuilding and the rest of the procedure.

Who else would be able to fight stereotypes as head-on as us, the European youth, as we live in a more multicultural, open border environment than no generation before?

Istanbul, the largest, most populated city in all of Turkey, home to over a millennia worth of rich culture and history, and a candidate to host the 2020 Olympics. Over time Istanbul has been the capital of not only huge empires but has taken the role of European Capital of Culture in 2010 and European Capital of Sport this past year in 2012.

Amongst this vast culture the cuisine served in Istanbul has wide variety. When one thinks of Turkey some of the first things to come to mind would be kebab, döner, baklava or Turkish delight. Apart from these, coming to Istanbul and not trying simit, grilled fish in French bread, pide or chestnuts would be a huge mistake! The best thing of all is you can find most of these in carts all over Istanbul and don’t have to go looking around for them. Wherever you go I can guarantee that you will see these carts. Even if you’re stuck in traffic and want a little snack there might be people selling food along the roads as well so it is really hard to not find something to eat. These were just a couple of examples; there are many more things such as Hamsi, börek (which has so many types that one cannot keep all of them in their mind).

The deserts though may be the best of all (I warn you, you will become fat after tasting some). Tulumba, kadayıf, ekler, profiterole, the list goes on and on! Güllüoğlu is one of the most famous stores that make the best deserts; it would be a shame to not visit it.

We Turkish people also have some interesting drinks to go along with these great foods. Pickle juice and turnip juice may be the two that will surprise you the most. They both go with foods made of meat so you may consider them if you are brave enough. Other than that ayran is extremely popu-lar and tastes great. It goes well with rice, döner and many others too. There’s nothing better than a nice refreshing drink of ayran on a hot day!

Tea and coffee are the two things we cannot go a day without. They are basically woven into our culture and lifestyles. Drinking tea, smoking some nargile and playing a round of backgammon in Beyoğlu is an extremely relaxing way one can pass their time. If you enjoy the coffee more there are an endless amount of cafes you can go to enjoy the landscape and see the natural beauty of Istan-bul or can have your fortune read as well!

As one can see the options are endless and if you want to you can mix and match. When one first enters the store he/she usually pauses to be able to decide amongst the variety of choices. Call it whatever you may, Constantinople or Istanbul, in every way it is our home and is home to all this wonderful cuisine!

During the first day of the session all the del-egates from ITRE II, who have never met each other, gather in Istanbul Lisesi school in order to participate in the National Selection Conference. For some of them it was their first EYP session but the confidence they presented would never allow you to think in that way. However, they have completely different interests and plans for the future.

From the very beginning they started to cooper-ate as a real team and came to effective solu-tions. This creative committee, guided by their

very experienced chair Sigrun, was involved in a range of tasks and activities which they man-aged without any bigger problems. Although, the committee on Industry Research and Energy consists of a number of individuals, the consen-sus from each discussion has been achieved. Moreover, these new born eypers showed great enthusiasm and willingness to work which I hope they will keep for the whole session.

At the end, there are no doubts that this team has a spirit and will rock during the committee work and General Assembly.

The committee on employment; thanks to them I finally have a job! When I think about the job itself and the benefits that come along with my position I feel so amazing, and awesome and legen… wait for it, DARY!

Teambuilding itself has a place on its own amongst the great times that are shared at sessions. This was also the case yesterday. With Samuel’s charismatic looks, breathtaking games and stunning posture all members of the group had a blast. We all know just how wonderful of a chair he really is, but you all deserve to know this as well and can be jealous too, it’s under-standable.

The committee is not very masculine when you look at it: 8 gals, 3 guys. This gives the oppor-tunity for the men to be in touch with their feminine side. In the beginning the cliché name games, games based on conversing with one an-other were played and at once the synergy was formed. Bonding took only a second and the rest was just time for them to relax. It was so

heart-warming and attractive that I felt the need to participate in almost all the games (and, to show off a little bit, I beat them all in the Ninja Game while not losing either of my arms). The biggest regret of mine though would have to be missing pass the orange game (one of my favor-ites). That said, I didn’t miss the biggest mo-ment, which was the CHALLENGE! Six commit-tees gathered round to play a game that called for people to run with water in their hands and go to a cup, then around five times and back again. With elegant movements, graceful steps and an unmatchable cheer my lovely commit-tee on employment came in second place. The bigger story though would have to be their never-before seen support which won them the best cheering committee honors. I was so ecstatic and extremely proud of each and every one of you, kudos to all, hugs and kisses!

More and more and so much more was done but I don’t want to take all your time. Take care and remember to enjoy yourselves as much as I am while writing this. Sayonara!

March 29, MorningI have easily blended in with the "delegates" of the "committee". They accepted me as one of them, though they might have been a bit dis-turbed when I did not join them on their Blind Dates. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

***Half An Hour Later***They've gone outside, and are getting themselves into an inescapable tangle of arms. Instead of admitting defeat, they try to get back into a circle form. Their persistence is quite intriguing.

***Minutes Later***It seems their persistence was not for naught, as they managed to become a proper circle through careful planning. They are currently facing off against another committee, doing what I think are folkloric dances consisting of raising one's arms up and taking a giant-like posture, or getting as small as possible, or quick arm waving movements, followed by a chaotic chase. They still do not suspect me taking photos or notes.

***Around Afternoon***Now they formed an even greater group with what I count as six committees. They formed three lines and it seems to me that they're having a military training focusing on balance. Basically they carry a bowl of water, spin around a small bottle on thr ground and then hand the bowl to the next person. At one point, one of them lost his balance and fell, which I thought would result with him getting kicked out, but on the contrary, all of them ran to his aid. Thekr solidarity keeps surprising me.

***Evening***I have followed them to a restaurant where they all ate together. Their preference to spend time together demands further investigation. I might keep a closer eye on them in the next days, and see if their solidarity is strong enough to tackle serious matters. Although for now, it seems to be.No further entries are found so far.

Orientation games are not just for fun. They have two main functions in my opinion. First, they obviously gets us closer in many aspects. They also give hints about the future character of the team. I won't lie and tell the truth: I had doubts. AFET I gave me the influence of a shy, unsure group of people because of hesitation at more demanding games. Yet here I am today listening to 9 people debating perfectly on their first day of committee work about a very soph-isticated and political issue. I was impressed by the renewed effort of Asude. She overcame her

difficulties and successfully participated during the brainstorm. This combined with Berke's creativity on the topic of "100 things to do with a baby blue sweatshirt". He suggested cutting them and making a fence out of them. Another cool idea was resizing them and making animal sweatshirts; loved it and I expect them to make a resolution just as unique as that one. One more thing. Being a late boomer is not bad as long as you keep the progress. Keep up the good work!

Welcome to Istanbul Erkek Lisesi’s stadium. A beautiful time for the match we all have impatiently been waiting for. My name is Janire and I will be the analyst of this encounter.

It is ECON versus AFCO II. It sounds so challenging…indeed it’s been a great dispute. Competence has been an important and consistent performer. First of all, Marianna’s committee it is composed by ten members. Concurrently, Alysha’s one has disadvantage in front of its opponent in this game: ECON, with one player less.

Both committees arrived this morning and had registered before starting teambuilding, got some warm up and breaking the ice games and started knowing each other. ECON and AFCO II have met around 12.30 am to play the Skin Snake. The line up of ECON today is Cagatay, Irmak, Kumsal, Zeynep, Gülcenur, Hasan. Elvin, Alara, Anil, Nursu and Sinan. At the same time they are covered by AFCO II whose players are Gürhan, Batuhan, Anil, Can Avni, Dora, Esra, Melis, Ilayda, Metehan.

This match will be a test to see how fast teamwork goes into each crew. So there I go! The whistle has just been blown and the battle is underway. The first minutes are beeing complicated for ECON, unfortunately the hands chain hasn’t been kept as it should while its members are trying to sneak past their partner’s legs. Luckily AFCO II are remaining firm. Despite of this little incident, the ‘economics’ are trying to continue. However, these aren’t the rules of the game so therefore we have to replay the game! AFCO managed to do it completely right but they must repeat the go aswell.

Oh! almost everyone has stained the knees area of their trousers, they’ve got verdigris of moss mixed with water from the playground! I can hear some complains from both committee members. They’re asking the coaches and referees to

have the second go inside the gymnasium. The petitions have been accepted so the show must go on. Oh, we need another player for AFCO II. If not, the match can be held because it’d be 10 economic players against 9 members of the committee dealing with democracy’s deficits in the EU. Well, It can be myself so I will furnish them some quick asisstance! Here we are! Nine AFCO II committee members plus ECON’s journo fighing against ten ECON guys. The game is entering its last and definitive chance and both team’s rows seem to be disposed to do whatever in order to achieve victory!

Ready, steady, go!!! Both teams are struggling. Now are the members from AFCO II who needs more speed when passing through their mate’s legs. The time is almost over and ECON is leading the situation. They are about to finish, they are, they are..done!!!There goes the blast of the final whistle. ECON did it faster, nevertheless this doesn’t devalues the fantastic effort from the opponent team.

Committee Sports

by Janire Sanz Sevilla(ES)

The winners are showing no more than amusement and delight. Both teams deserve to success, and I’m sure they will do it during the session but for the moment let’s call ECON the fastest ones rather than winners. Because here in EYP everyone is a winner, everyone is a successful candidate. Although committee members are quite young, they definitely have got the skills and capabilities to cooperate and let the Committee Work run smoothly. In the beginning it’s just you. Then, with your partners you form a group. Team building is the essence of the committee.

The team’s going wild! Huh. It’s been a great day and a great match. Thank you for tuning in. Janire Sanz’s out for today.
