The Archibald Family John Archibald of Londonderry, Ireland (1623-1751) was the father of six sons; four sons moved to Truro from East Derry, New Hampshire in 1760. John was buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, having died Aug. 10, 1751. His father, John, was buried in Londonderry, N.H. in 1728. The will of the grandfather of the “Four Archibald Brothers” is in Londonderry, N.H. The four brothers, David, Samuel, James, Thomas, and three sisters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Matthew Taylor), Eleanor (Mrs. William Fisher) and Martha (Mrs. Samson Moore) came to Truro in 1760. The Archibald Family

Adams Archibald

1. Adams, (the 3rd son of Matthew & Janet Fisher Archibald) was born in Truro April 18, 1777. He md. Hannah (4th dau. of Robert and Hannah (Blair) Archibald on Jan. 22, 1802. They settled in Middle Musquodoboit where he had taken a grant of 180 acres on March 2, 1811, now the farm of Douglas Benvie 1980. He was one of the first to build a two-storey house here, it was situated on the old road further up the hill. His wife Hannah died June 10, 1854 age 75 yrs. They are both buried in the Pioneer Cemetery beside the church. Adams and Hannah had 2 daus. 2-1 Eliza b May 1, 1803 - July 24, 1827 age 24 yrs. 3-2 Janet b. Nov. 14, 1804 - Feb. 8, 1843, age 38 yrs. 2-1 Eliza md. Angus McLeod, her genealogy is given in the McLeod history.

Adams left his farm to his grandson, George McLeod. George built the present house in which Adams died in 1857. The Doug Benvie Property 1980.

When George became old he sold the farm to Samuel and Charles McCurdy. Later they sold it to Gus Chisholm, he to Foster Dixon McCurdy. After his death it was sold to E.D.T. Snow who sold it to Norman Benvie, who left it to his son Douglas.

3-2 Janet (2nd dau. Of Adams and Hannah Archibald) md. John Tupper on March, 1830. They had 3 sons, 1 dau. 4-1 Angus 5-2 Adams - unmarried 6-3 Henry 7-4 Eliza Janet died on Feb. 8, 1843 and her husband died July 26, 1844 age 40 yrs. 4-1 Angus md. Hannah (dau. of Hon. David McCurdy) in the spring of 1861. He died on May 5, 1865. No issue. 6-3 Henry md. Ellen Stewart of Musquodoboit. They had 3 sons , 3 daus. 8-1 dau. md. C.L. Beck of New Glasgow 9-2 Annie md. John W. Logan, lived in Truro. 10-3 Louise md. Captain Everett McDougall 11-4 George L.) 12-5 John reside in Duluth 13-6 Henry C. went to California

After the death of Ellen, Henry md. 2nd the widow of Hon. A. W. MacLean. 7-4 Eliza md. Mr. Parker of Upper Musquodoboit. She md. 2nd Alfred Brush of Moncton, and they settled in Auburndale, Mass. Her dau. Fannie md. Leon Minette and resided in Boston.

John Archibald

John (3rd son of David and Elizabeth Elliott Archibald) was born in Londonderry, Ireland, August 18, 1747. He came with the rest of the family, to New England about 1759, and to Truro December 13, 1762. He was one of the grantees of Truro Township. He lived, while in Truro, on his house lot in the Village; later it was known as the Hiram Hyde lot. About 1790 he moved to Musquodoboit and settled on the farm later called the John Tupper farm, now owned by Carl Grant where Ronald Stewart resides, 1980. John md. Alice (sister of Hugh Moore Sr. of Truro) on June 2, 1768. They had 4 sons, 6 daus. John and Alice both died in Musquodoboit and are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery although graves are unmarked. *2-1 David b. Mar. 19, 1769 *3-2 Hugh b. Oct. 24, 1770 - Jan. 7, 1771 4-3 Ann b. 16-5 David (2nd son of Letitia Archibald) was known by the name of David the sixteenth. He md. Christiana (dau. of James Guild and Elizabeth Johnson) on Nov. 1, 1832. First he settled in Glenmore but was unable to obtain a clear title to the property so later moved to Elmsvale on the present Legg property. They had 1 son, 6 daus.

Jonathan, shortly after he was married, moved to Pleasant Valley and had the mills at the foot of the lake. He moved from there to Musquodoboit in 1824, where he spent the remainder of his days at farming and milling. He died here in August 1861.

Matthew Taylor Archibald

1. Matthew Taylor Archibald was the second son of Matthew and Janet Fisher Archibald, he was born in Truro, November 17, 1774. He came to Middle Musquodoboit about 1800 along with his two brothers, Adams and Samuel Fisher Archibald. On March 2, 1811, he was granted 500 acres of land: this is the place so long known as the Bourke Gladwin farm but now owned by Smith Archibald, 1980. When Colonel Gladwin came to Middle Musquodoboit he purchased this farm and Matthew moved south to the farm where Smith now resides. On September 15, 1801 he md. Jane (dau. of William Guild). He was called Good Matthew - a name given him by The Rev. John Sprott. Matthew and Jane had 1 son and 1 daughter. Samuel Fisher Archibald

1. Samuel Fisher Archibald, the eldest son of Matthew and Janet Fisher Archibald, he was born in Truro, Oct. 3, 1772, He md. Olivia Scott (dau. of Joseph and Sarah Cutting Scott of Onslow Township) in Oct. 1797. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Musquodoboit where they settled and had their house on the property owned by Dr. Cleland Marshall, 1980. The lands on which he settled were granted to his father Matthew Archibald of Truro in 1786, actually it was granted to Matthew and Robert Archibald, 1500 acres on Jan. 20, 1786. Matthew never lived in Musquodoboit, but gave the grant to Samuel Fisher, his son, who came here about 1800. He was a tanner and farmer.

The tannery buildings were located on the present Stanley D. Archibald property, “The currying shop” is still standing and in good repair. 1980. Probably it is among the very oldest buildings now standing in Musquodoboit. For reasons arising from the Church activities of its residents this immediate locality was called “Deacontown”. In recent times the name has been discarded and is now known as Centre Musquodoboit. John Bates

The Bates originally came from Holland and settled at Hammonds Plains near Halifax. They came to Halifax after the American Revolution (1775-1783). Ehakim Bates married and had a family. He was buried in Halifax in the cemetery by the old Dutch Church; his name can still be read on his grave stone. 1. John V. Bates b 1792 –d Oct 27, 1870, son of Ehakim moved from Hammonds Plains to Halifax as a young man, where he learned the carpenter trade. About 1822 John moved to Musquodoboit, took up part of the Mark Hodgson grant in Glenmore, cleared his farm and built himself a home place where Mrs. Isaac Holman, a great grand-daughter, now resides. About the time he moved to Musquodoboit he md. Mary R. Layton (dau. of John Layton). She was born in 1803 and died Sept. 16, 1881 age 78 yrs.
