What is an Architect’s Notebook?

An architect’s notebook is a book in which an architect will formally document, in chronological order, all work that is associated with a specific design project.

Each architect has an architect’s notebook.

Architects record all related project work by hand.

An architect’s notebook records…

• Written ideas

• Sketches (preferably annotated)

• Work session summaries

• Research findings

• Interview information: who was contacted, when, and what was discussed or learned

2. Notebooks are bound.

3. No pages are removed from the notebook for any reason.

1. Pages are sequentially numbered in ink on the top outside edge.

4. The notebook is stored in a safe location when it is not being used.

5. When the notebook is full, a new one begins and picks up where the other ended.
