Detroit Riverwalk (beautiful landscapes) with Marc Pasco

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy is a non profit organization responsible for the es-

tablishment, improvement, operation, maintenance, security, programming and expansion of the

Detroit Riverwalk and associated green spaces. Beautifully landscaped gardens along the river

from GM plaza to Rivard place provides visitors with a place to sit, relax, walk, and enjoy urban

art pieces while strolling the Riverfront. Join us as Marc Pasco talks about the fabulous new

downtown Riverwalk.

There will be refreshments and snacks. Please plan on bringing something to share. The

table centerpieces will be raffled off. Dearborn Heights club will be hosting a Mini-Silent Auction

table to raise funds to purchase a “TREE”. Feel free to bring a guest. If you haven’t seen the

Riverwalk in the past year, you are in for a pleasant surprise!

Moody Teez—Garden Club Party

We had a full house for the “Tee Party”. It was fun designing our own shirts, each of us came up with designs that fit our personal-

ities. I enjoyed visiting with club members, something I don’t get to do much at our meetings. Thank you to Cheryl Partin for

organizing the evenings activities and Moody Teez for having us! If you weren’t able to join us for the “party”, you can visit Moody

Teez at 33165 Ford Road and design your own shirt.. They are open from 10 am to 8 pm.

Last fall we replanted bulbs at the Butterfly Garden at City

Park into a shape of a butterfly. You can actually see the

shape forming. It will be fun to see it in bloom.

Take time to look closely at your plants. I found Praying

Mantis Egg Cases (they aren’t cocoons). Each case holds

about 300 eggs. Praying Mantis are natures bug eaters!

The Southwestern Michigan Garden Clubs of Districts III and your President cordially invite you to the 87th Annual Meeting and State Convention "Bzzzzz Michigan-Celebrating Pollinators" at the Radisson Pla-za Hotel in Kalamazoo, June 6.

Kalamazoo features a vibrant and progressive downtown with a big city mindset and yet with a small town heart. It offers quality dining, eclectic shops and galleries, and live entertainment-just waiting for you to experience it. Ever wonder the origin of the name? Kalamazoo is a Native American word that means boiling water. The river makes the sound of "kalamazoo."

Co-Chairs Evelyn Flynn and Mary Beth Montague along with their Committees have planned a memora-ble event for you that you won't want to miss. It will provide educational and networking opportunities, (oh yes, and shopping) including:

Presidents’ Plus Planning Meeting

On Thursday, April 26, 2018 from 9:30 to 12:15 am I, Pat McKarge) will be attending our district’s Planning Meeting at the Pleas-

ant Ridge Community Center , 4 Ridge Road, Pleasant Ridge. Ruth Moline is encouraging each club to bring one or two additional

people to the event.

Why? We need different, more efficient ways for District 9 clubs and members to work together. We will brainstorm, share,

cooperate, strategize and “think outside the box.”

If you are interested in attending the meeting, let me know a.s.a.p., so I can let Ruth know how many people to expect from our

club.

May Migration Bird Walk Series

8:00 AM -10:00 AM, Saturdays: May 5, 12, 19 and 26

We'll look to catch an assortment of spring bird migrants stopping over in the Environmental Study Area on their way to northern nesting grounds. Join Center naturalist Rick Simek for up to four different Saturday morning bird watching excursions. These walks are tailored to beginning and experienced bird watchers who enjoy an unhurried and inquiry-based approach to viewing birdlife. Binoculars are a must, so please bring your own pair, as well as a field guide to bird identification. Attend as many walks as you wish. Participants must be at least 12 years of age.

Join Naturalist Dorothy McLeer for an afternoon stroll through the woods to welcome the emer-gence of ephemeral spring wildflowers. The campus Environmental Study Area is home to such seasonal natives as Large-flowered Trillium, Cut-leaf Toothwort, and of course, Spring Beauties, among many others. A bonus will be the waves of migrating birds feasting all around us. Beat the heat and mosquitoes for this early spring foray!
