Area and perimeter are different

ways of measuring a shape.

The area is the amount of space

inside the shape.

The perimeter is the distance around the edge.

Page 2: The Area and Perimeter Pack - teachingfiles.co.uk · To find the perimeter, add the lengths of ALL of the sides. Make sure that you don’t miss any! 6 + 5 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 9 = 30m To

This field is a rectangle.

It is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide.We can find out the area of a rectangle by multiplying the

length by the width.

4 x 3 = 12

4m

3mSo the areaof the field is

12 square metres.

We can write this as 12m2.These measurements are called the shape’s

dimensions.

Thismeans‘squared’.

Some shapes are

made by joining

two or more shapes

together. These are

called compound

(or composite)

shapes.

To find the perimeter, add the

lengths of ALL of the sides.

Make sure that you don’t miss any!

6 + 5 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 9 = 30m

To find the area, split the compound shape into smaller

shapes. Work out the area of each part and then find the total.

6x5=30m2

3x4=12m2 4m

The area of this compound shape is:

30 + 12 = 42m2.

I need a new field for my sheep. It must:• be rectangular,• have a perimeter

of 14 metres.

How many different designs can you find? What is the area of each design?

I own a vineyard. I measure the dimensions of my fields so that I can fit in as many vines as possible.

I also work out the size of the perimeter fence.
