On November 11, 1975, H. R. 10686, a bill to release the 1900 Census, was introduced in the U. S. House of Representatives. This bill would make available, "seventy-five years after the census date and thereafter to persons whom the Archivist of the United States determines will utilize access to such material for genealogical and other proper purposes·, the census of 1900. The bill was referred to the Post Office and Civil Services Committee. As of this date, no action has been scheduled on it.

I do not need to remind the members of the Arkansas Genealogical Society of the importance of the passage of this bill. Although the 1900 census is now available on a limited basis at the National Archives, and at the various Regional Records Center, use of it is made very expensive by the necessity of travel or the hiring of researchers. It will not be until this census can be found in state archival agencies and historical societies that it will be accessible to the many millions of Americans who wish. to do family history research.

If you wish to express an opinion concerning the merits of this bill, you may write to Rep. David N. Henderson, Chairman of the Commitee, or Rep. Patricia Schroder, Vice-Chairman of the Committee, c/o the House of Representatives, Washington, D. C. 20515. You might also contact your local Congressional Representative.

R. P. Baker Archivist Arkansas History Commission

P. S.: Copies of H. R. 10686 may be obtained from your local Congressional Representative.

GRAY FAMILY HISTORY by REV. JAMES BURROW HINES GRAY Cave City, Sharp Co., Ark. July 27, 1908

"Family history as far back as we can trace it: My Great Grandfather's name was Gilbert GRAY and came from Paris, France, just after the Revolutionary War, and landed some where on the Eastern coast. He was accompanied by his Uncle, and they came on sailing vessels. It took about six months to cross. After they landed, his uncle put up a store and he worked in it for several years. They put up at Charleston, South Carolina. He married a Wilburn and they had seven children. Their names are from the eldest. down. Alson, John, Arrington, Elisha, Andy, are the boys. The girls are Martha and Ann (Chipman).

"After he left the store he went to farm in Guilford County, North Carolina, near Parsons Mills, and he went to those mills to mill, and would go in bathing in Deep River, which empties into the sea. He owned a good farm and several stores.

"Alson Gray, son of Gilbert Gray, was born in Guilford Co., North Carolina. He married Malinda Robinson (Robbins) and she was an Old like girl. He owned two hundred acres of land before he married. He farmed and preached. He commenced preaching when he was 22 years of age and preached until he was 80 years of age. Church History: He was one of the first of the organizers of the Methodist-Protestant Church. He was a Methodist-Episcopal Pastor before they organized the other. He had several children. One girl had a pet dog, and it ran up and snapped her, and it was mad. It bit her on the head, and old Dr. Coiin burnt the place, and she never developed hydrophobia. His son, Silas, was a preacher, and belonged to the J. P. C. (Justice of the Pe~ce Court) Alson lived to be 84 years of age. .

"John Gray, son of Gilbert, was born in April la, 1810. When he was a boy at home, the dogs caught a hog at the back of the field and Gilbert hollered at Alson and the negroes to get up and run. They were slow about it, and Uncle John ran and beat them off of them. Then the hog ran by him and bit him on the leg, and left a scar ••• While they were very small but large enough to chop wood, they went to cut some wood ••• they both wanted to chop, and Alson got the ax and John wanted it, but he would not let him have it. So, he said he would not let him chop and he put his foot in the way, so he could not hit for a while ••• he got to making short licks, and finally he cut off two of his toes, the little toe and the one next to it.

·"When Alson was 8 years of age he had to cut wood. He said that he had paid for his raising two or three times.

"John said he could remember the first crab grass. It came up in the garden, and they howed it to see what it was. It soon took everything. They called tomatoes, Balsoms, and they grew wild. They did not eat them, but they would put them in Whiskey for medicine. They would make lots of whiskey.

"The land was sandy, and there were plenty of muscadines, grapes, fox grapes, huckleberries ••• John worked one year in the mines, and they mined for gold. They would make one dollar and quarter per day. And common labor was from 25¢ to 50¢ per day. They had slaves, and did not need very much help. They raised corn, wheat, and fine fruits, potatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, and all kinds of fruits. He owned 200 acres of land before he married, very good land, and he farmed. He was about 27 years of age when he married Belinda Robbins, sister to the one Alson married. And Enoch Robbins, brother to this woman, was the richest man in the country. Out of his father's estate he got one and a half negroes, his name was Bob. He and one of his brothers sold the negro for 800 dollars and divided the money. And the one that they sold, they got into it by trying to correct him about something and the negro got an old barlow, and said he could cut them. So they got him by the neck and choaked him, and this was why they sold him.

He owned another farm, and an old free negro stayed on it, and he would graft fruit trees, and put out about three acres of fruit.

5 GRAY FAMILY HISTORY (Con't page 2)

He said if he did not stay, he would be passing around and get a ••• of them.

He owned about five hundred acres of land before they left, and he had a sale to sell all of the personal property. There was a large crowd there, and it brought a very good price. He left the land in Scott Wilburn'S hand to be sold, and he sold it to Dean, and he could not pay for it in two years, 80 Scott Wilburn paid it.

"He had six children, Elutitia, Elisha, Jefferson Franklin, Ekisiar, Matilda, Martha Jane, Balinda. John's first wife died in about 1842 or there abouts. Martha Jane died before her mother died. Balinda was the baby, and old Au'nt Jane, called Rane, let her nurse a bottle. He married again in 1845, and married Sally Crow, while he lived there. James Burrow Hines born July 1, 1846 and Stevens Romulous McDaniel was born April 10, 1848. ,

"He left there the second day of March 1850, and started to Missouri, but never did get there. He came across the Cumberland Mountains, through Kentucky, Salisberry, North Carolina. He bought a trunk and brought it with him, and it is here today, July 27, 1908. And through Tennessee, and crossed the Mississippi River at Iron Banks or Columbia, and crossed in a flat bottom boat, and came through the edge of Missouri, then camped at old Jackson. They came to Smithville, Lawrence Co., Ark., to Jo McGee, and from there to Curia on the Batesville and Smithville Public Road now where my father lives. They bought corn from Mr. Sayad, who owned this place, and he wanted to sellout to him, but he wanted to go on further south. He went to Searcy, White County, and stayed there for a while, and was sick, so he turned back to here ••• anq the man that owned this place still wanted to sellout to him, but he went on out to Reeds Creek and got a small log cabin to stay in for a while ••• with wooden hinges, and in July 1850 he took a notion he would come back down here and look at this place, and bought the place. There was only 40 acres entered, and he put in an old Tar wagon. They moved to this place in August 1850, and they sowed turnips after they moved down here.

The one that was born in Arkansas: Mary Sabaria Elisa Gray, born 22 Aug. 1852.

"In July 1853, they went back to North Carolina on a visit. They left Elutitia and Elisha here, for they had married. While there, they stayed at Aunt Martha Chipman's. He collected the pay for his land while he was there. Then they stayed with Grandfather Crow. He was a farmer and owned a good deal of property and negroes. They started back to Arkansas, November 1853, and arrived for Christmas day. John Crow and John Smith came to Arkansas with him this time. SallY,Gray (Father's mother) died in August 1854.

"He went back there on a visit in 1856 accompanied by Martha Ann Chipman and Bill Anderson, brother to Clint ~all's wife. (Kentucky). A young man named Wilburn came back to Arkansas with them.

"He farmed, preached and practiced medicine. John Gray died Feb. 19, 1878 and is buried at the old Mt. Tabor Cemetery, his wife there by his side.

"Capt. Bell was a great uncle to John Gray, and he was a Captain in the Revolutionary War, and a lot of Tories. British. went there one night and caught him. They set the house on fire. He crawled out to the back of the garden to some blackberry briars and hid. He was afraid to move for he knew they would kill him if they found him. And they went out to Bill's Great Grandmother's and were going to take her negroes. when they ran out clapping their hands, hollering, "There they are. run boys". and they ran off and did not take the negroes.

"James Burrow Hines Gray. born July 1. 1848 in Guilford County. North Carolina, arrived in Arkansas. Aug. 1850, visited North Carolina in 1853. Came back to Arkansas in 1853.

He went to war in July 4, 1864, Regiment Col. Love (Lowe) at first, then under Captain Finley, Regiment Col. Barnia Ford. Route they went: Iron Mountain or Pilot Knole, Booneville, Leydon, then to Kansas City, then back to Arkansas. Surrendered at old Jackson Port, June 5, 1865. Moved to Jackson County one year, then returned to Independence County."

The deed for this property was made from Rev. W. D. W1ngfield and wife Dora. S1gned and acknowledged 16 November 1915 for $200. Deeded to the city of Emerson. Columbia County, Arkansas, for oemetery use only.

Was recorded 12 Apr11 1928 in Book 63, page 548, Magnolia, Columb1a County Courthouse, Arkansas. Containing 2 and a fraction acres in NE 1/4 - NE 1/4, Section 17 Towoship19 South Range 20 West. Mr. Buck OWens is 1n charge of the Cemetery (1975).

Special thanks _from Y9ur EDITOR for the well typed copy. both for the Emerson Cemetery, Mount Zion Cemetery by Jane A. Goodwin, Patterson Cemetery by Mr. & Mrs. Chalman E. Green, Pleasant Hill Cemetery by James Logan Morgan, Mount Tabor Cemetery, Covington Cemetery, and the Joel H111 Pamily Bible, Daniel Skinner 'CoY'fam11y Bible. All this helps save time, and time has really been something to consider reoently. If any of these or any other article you happen to enjoy or reaeive any help from (e1ther 1n the Arkansas Pam11y Historian or some other publication) STOP right then, and drop the contributor a small note. If you have never inventoried a·Cemetery, try that 800n, I promise you will certainly apprec1ate every other Cemetery Inverttory, you ever see fron that time' torevert There are no chigero, tioke, rain, hot sun, (to mention a few of the problems) 1n your living room, but you aan expect most anything while you are trying to work out in the open Cemetery. Do not take my word - try it!

Mrs. Mae Green was just asked the question (by mail) "Do you know whether GRAY'S CHAPEL CEMETERY & HICKORY VALLEY CEMETERY & BALL CEMETERY have been inventoried?" Then she found - they had NOT been copied! Mrs. Green and her husband, Chalman E. Green hurried to get them to us for this issue. James L. Morgan typed them for us and the BALL CEM. will appear in a later issue (along with the Ball Family History). Additional information will be appreciated by Mrs. Henry O. Johnson, 109 Pleasant Valley Dr., Little Rock, AR 72207. MANY ARKANSAS FAMILIES are related to these Fa~ilies. Many many thanks to all who have helped. EC

QUERIES Some are beginning to complain. "All I can hear is the

Bi-Centennial and I will be glad when it is over." Personally, I think it is wonderful that we are remembering our 200th birthday, and that we have the freedom and resources to celebrate in the manner we are allover the country. Granted some of the celebrations are trivial and the event is being commercialized, but we also have people that will only be aware of the trivial and commercial aspect, and that is better than no awareness at all.

I think we should consider doing something on a personal level and writing a family history is a good way to make that personal contribution. You have spent time and money collecting information, (some that probably will never be available again) and all this will probably be destroyed at your death, if you do not write it in a form that will be of interest to some one who is not a genealogist.

There are many excuses but no reasons for not writing your family history. You do not have to have a Revolutionary Ancestor for this country was only born in the Revolution and has continued to grow and is still growing. Those who have come later, have made their contribution and are a part, and are important, just the same as those at the beginning. We have a part and are making our contribution now, future citizens will be a part, and continue building on the foundations laid by past generations.

A history printed on slick paper with hard covers and gold lettering is very fine, but the cost is often prohibitive, for family histories do not sell large numbers outside the family, but to get the history in print you do not have to use this method. The multilith is not an expensive method, produces a nice copy and you can get a small number of copies •. (This publication is by this process). The mimeograph is another method that is not expensive and is very good, when a limited number of copies are needed. Some resort to xerox, but multilith or mimeograph is cheaper. If you feel you can not afford either of these methods, make a neat typed copy. If you can not type or can not afford a typist, write it in pen and ink and staple together in book form. At least, you will have compiled a family history, and a relative might decide to help you publish it. .

One advantage of publication is that multiple copies will insure the material will be saved. One copy can be lost so easily. The cost can usually be met by pre-publication sales to other family members and there are some libraries that buy all publications in this field.

EDITOR I S NOTE: One of the best ways to get additional information on a

family - write several pages (or one page) and send it to your Arkansas Family Historian for publication! Many read our AFH and in turn write the author about their side of that family, many have made great contacts and by helping each other, other generations are often added. Our mail is loaded with nice remarks about the different articles in various issues. (E. Cia)

GOSS Zona Hardin HaWkins, 4670 SW 182nd, Aloka, Ore. 97005 TETRICK I am hoping to contact someone who can help me get enough

information regarding the JAMES W.(William) GOSS family and their children, so that I can have a delayed certificate of birth issued for my grandmother MARTHA JANE GOSS (who was one of their children). The father ,James William GOSS, b. 1844, GA., his wife Charlotte, b. 1845, GA. their son John Gilbert Goss, also b. GA. At the time they lived in Viney Grove & Marrs Hill Townships, Washington 60., Ark., they had four daughters, all b. in Ark. The four girls were named: Sarah E., Martha J., Alice May, and Nancy. This family apparently left Viney Grove to move to OhiO, sometime in1880/81, because an uncle was b. in-OhiO in 1881. I am grateful for the help which has been given me so far in my efforts and I will appreciate any kind of info given me because it would possibly provide some clues as to where to look for this needed information. So no matter how unimportant it might seem to be if there is anything I will certainly appreciate receiVing it. On the other hand if there is anything I can do out here in my area to help any of the members of the Arkansas Genealogical Society, PLEASE let me know, as I would like to be able to return the favor, of the information I have received from the kind lady in the Washington County Courthouse who gave me the address of the Ark. Gen. Society.

There is also a paternal grandmother who came from Arkansas. Her name was MARY C. TETRICK. I have no information about her family at all, not even the names of parents or where they came from. She had two brothers: Danial and Charles TETRICK.

HUMPHRFYS Mrs. Willma Humphreys Newton, P.O. Box 41, Hampton, BLANTON Ark. 7174Lf I believe my paternal great grandfather

After years of search I have only two written references to him, one in the family of my grandparents, which says, "William Blanton Humphreys (my grandfather) son of John and Margaret (Peggy) Blanton Humphreys was born Apr. 22, 1822." In the same handwriting, an obituary of 'Ililliam B., written at the time of his death in ~Iarch, 1893, at Evangeline, Acadia Parish, La., recites the same facts about his parents. Have a fairly good record of "Peggy" Blanton Hunphreys, and through the Blantons, hope to be led to my Humphreys. Peggy was. born ca. 1803 in Monroe Co., Va. (now W. Va.), the daughter of John and Elizabeth Wiseman Blanton. Have established her descent from three men listed in the DAR Patriot Indexi Vincent Hobbs ,Sr., Isaac Wiseman, and William Blanton. John Blanton was .'-, Monroe Co. as late as 1812 when he acquired land there, moved to Estill Co., Ky. for a few years, then to Morgan Co., Ind. and finally to Hendricks Co., Ind. where he died in 1844. Peggy probably married John Humphreys someplace in Ky about 1821, al though the Humphreys, like the Blantons and "'iseman, were numerous in Monroe Co., Va. When John Blanton left Ky., son, William and daughter., Catherine (wife of John Murphy) remained in Estill Co. Other children werel son, Thomas b. ca. 1800 md. Lucy b,' Ky.; Belinda (or [.'!alinda)Somner (Sumner) I Jane, wife of Henry Moss; Mary (Polly) md. Ellison. All went to Ind. where numerous Blantons settled. ·Is this the Polly Blanton who married Hardin Ellison b. 1807 in madison Co., Ky. on Jan. 15, 1829? Peggy was a widow by 1830- 35. Her daughter, Melinda. Humphreys gives her age so variously in the census that a defins.te birth date can not be established but it was between 1830-35 in Ind. I want to assign the date of Peggy's widowhood and the arrival of the Blantons in Ind. around 1830, based on the fact that my grandfather always told his children that he left home at the age of seven. He always told them he never remembered seeing his father's face. He was apprenticed, first to a. man named Kelly and later to .3. Mr. Carlisle who taught him the blacksmith trade and treated him as a son. Family tradition has it that when he was twenty-one he went to Ind. hunting his mother. When John Blanton died in 1844, his will directed that everything he had be sold. At the sale of his personal effects in Nov. 1844, the first purchaser was William B. Humphries (now s.lmost 23) who bought his grandfather's shaving equipment. Where vms he before then? I have checked Estill Co., Ky. and Hendricks Co., Ind. for his apprenticeship, Need any facts about William B. Humphreys (Humphries) between 1830 and 1844. Need marriage of John Humphreys and Peggy Blanton and John's death date.

BUTLER & TIBBETT (TIPPIT, TIBBITTS) FAMILY HISTORY By - Allen Pendergraft

Father - David Butler, b. 28 August 1816, New York, New York d. 23 March 1877, Jonesboro, Craighead Co., Ark. (dates from Bible) m. 17 Dec. 1842 (Bible - 18 Dec. Elbert Co. Marriage Records) Georgia physician, Baptist Minister, Mason, Irish descent.

Mother - Narcissa SARAH Douglas Raymond Tibbet(t) b. 20 Dec. 1824 in Georgia (Bible, 1850 Butler Co., Ala. census) d. Apr 1898 in Stoddard Co., Missouri (no Will). Daughter of Thomas Tibbet(t) (tradition) born in Ohio, people from Va. or the North, cotton Planter, English, Dutch, and Indian descent.

David Butler's father was co-owner of Butler Bros., Inc., New York, N. Y, with a branch in Chicago, retail & whOlesale general merchandise, with a mail order bUSiness, like Sears, and with a livery stable. David left home after a quarrel with his brother and mother over putting out the cat, never to return, for which he was disinherited. He had recently finished medical school. He travelled throughout the South for several years, visiting every state, mainly by river boat, but sometimes by coastal Ships, looking for the ideal place to settle and practice his profession. In his travels he met the Tibbets. The father was an invalid and Sarah managed the plantation and its slaves. David and Sarah fell in love, but David was not rid of his wanderlust. He promised he would return in one year to the day and they would be married.

Sarah went to work on her trousseau, using cloth woven on the plantation. David returned as promised and they were married in 1842, planning to leave shortly. But Sarah's father took a turn for the

. worse and died within a month. They stayed on to run the plantation for several years, then moved to Butler Co., Alabama, to Paducah, Ky., and on to JoneSboro, Union Co., Ill., by 1860 (census). During the Civil War they were Southern sympathizers. David practiced medicine there, but he was a Baptist preacher on Sundays. His Masonic connection kept him from being impressed into the Union Army, but his eldest son, Andrew was "kidnapped" by Northern recruiters one Sunday morning as he came out of his father's church. He apparently served with good will; we have a tintype of Andrew in his Yankee uniform and another of his beautiful young wife, Jane Dean.

After the War, they removed to Jonesboro, Craighead County, Ark., about 75 miles south of Union Co., Ill. David worked too hard as a physician and died of exposure after riding his. horse at night through a flooded creek in March of 1877 trying to save the life of a sick man in a remote area. David Butler is buried in Old Philadelphia Churchyard four miles from Jonesboro. There is no mention of him in the County History according to the Jonesboro Public Library, though his name is listed as 6th Pastor of Old Philadelphia Church. Sarah took the children and moved again to Stoddard County in the Bootheel of Missouri. Cousin Willie Butler (son of James Laurence Butler, b. 1849, son of David) had a houseboat on the Mississippi River in nearby Cape Girardeau, Mo., where Almeta Ann loved to visit until she fell into the river, and was saved from drowning only at the last minute by her brother, who pulled her out by her long dark hair. In Stoddard Co., she met and married, Giles George Washington Cardwell, from Virginia,

and they settled on a small farm between Leora and- Puxico, north of the county seat of Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., Mo., where all their children were born except Ann (in Cape Girardeau) and Robert (in Texas).

65 Nell Johnson, Rt. 1 Box llA, Damascus, AR 72039 - My father's side of the family (BRINKLEY) came from England and settled in N.C., VA, Tenn., Texas and Ark., and some later went to California. But at one time almost all of them shows up here in Ark., around Conway, Van Buren & Clebourne Counties. My great grandfather was Bumpus B. Franklin Co., Tenn., to a Leroy P. WILLIAMS and had a family by him, he died prior to the War. Their marriage took place in Franklin Co., Tenn., in 1843. After their marriage they came to Ark. In 1859 she married my great grandfather, Bumpus B. Brinkley (17) and Mrs. Martha J. (HILL) WILLIAMS (age 30). They moved to Franklin Co. (Tenn. or Ark.?) this is not clear. They had 3 children. John Alexander BRINKLEY, my grandfather. (He was hung for a murder that he did not commit, in 1098. In later years, Dr. Virgil Cross & Mary Chambless the murdered victim's wife was learned to have murdered Dr. Gilbert Chambless, Mary's husband. Dr. Cross confessed to the crime before he died. The other two children were Margaret & Bynpus. John Alexander BRINKLEY, age 19 married Miss (Julian) Julie SCROGGINS, (age 16 or 17) in 1879. Permission for their marriage was signed by B. B. Brinkley, and Leroy Scroggins. (I suppose her father) not sure. Children. Martha, Dovie, Etta, John, Bumpus, Joe, Alexander (My father) and Karry. Margaret Brinkley married George STOWBUCK (his name later spelled STOUBAUGH). Bumpus (possibly) married Luby GREER and died in Oklahoma. (Tradition-a saw mill fire). Great grandfather Bumpus was married again (perhaps - Allie Jones?) and they had two children. His relatives knew he had remarried and had two children but did not know to whom.
