This Book, The Arrival of Buddha is a trans-lation in English of the original book Bud-dha Vijayam, delineating the birth, life,renunciation, attaining of Nirvana and thegolden teachings of Lord Buddha, includ-ing the basic tenets of Buddhism in a flow-ing poetry form, in a narrative style, writ-ten in chaste Tamil and nice composedeloquently by Swami Kavi Maharishi YogiShuddhananda Bharati.

It is such a comprehensive and elegantpresentation by the Swamiji that it keepshis devotees as well as any avid readerimmersed in the story of the great Buddha.

The Swami has adopted a simple style, eas-ily absorbable, at the same time, written inthe beautiful, pure Tamil (Senthamizh) ofthe past, selecting appropriate Tamil wordsfor describing every event, the transforma-tion in the Buddha and his attaining thehighest level of wisdom. The Swami’sTamil is of such a high standard that it wasa daunting task for me to translate it in its

entirety, in substance and in spirit aspenned by this immortal poet, Kavi YogiShuddhananda Bharati.

Sine Dr. Shuddhananda Bharati is so wellknown by the citizens all over the world Ido not have to extol on that aspect. Thespirituality to which he was mainlydrawn; his studies of the different reli-gions, including Hinduism, Christianity,Islam, Buddhism and Jainism; his highproficiency in Tamil; his mastering of dif-ferent European languages like English,Latin and French; his monumental contri-bution to literature in the form of severalhundred works in English, French, Tamil,Hindi, Telugu and Sanskrit; five thousandsongs, and fifteen hundred poems inFrench; and, capping it all, his master-piece, the magnum opus Bharata Shakti, allspeak for him profusely.

Dr. Shuddhananda Bharati‘s unique SamaYoga, the yoga of equality which he pro-pounded and propagated the world over,reflects his unshakeable belief that all theworld is one.

The wise one to the cosmic ageAlthough more than 90 years old, in hisschool in the south of India, Kavi YogiMaharishi (great divine visionary, wisepoet), Kavi Yogi Swami Dr.ShuddhanandaBharati worked like a young man oftwenty. When he was asked his age, heanswered: “My age is Courage!”

The Yogi wrote several hundred works inEnglish, French, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu andSanskrit; five thousand songs, and fifteenhundred poems in French. The magnumopus of the man conscious of the presenceof God in him, Bharata Shakti, (in 50,000verses) described his ideal: only OneHumanity living in communion with onlyOne God in a transformed world! BharataShakti is a monumental and unique work.The Yogi depicts the essence of all the reli-gions, of all the prophets and saints, all theapproaches of Yoga and all the cultures on

an allegorical fabric. It is a book for anyage which all spiritual researchers and allnations should read and meditate on.

His commitment is summarized in hisbook celebrating his life, Pilgrim Soul.

The two poems mentioned in the openingexpress perfectly his ideal.

His mantra, Aum Shuddha Shakti Aum,nourishes our souls and guides our stepstoward the inner joy Ananda. It means: thelight of Grace and power of the puresupreme Almighty bless us with peace,happiness and prosperity!

Let the beauty and greatness of soul of Dr.Bharati Shuddhananda bloom and scentthe entire Earth with its divine messageand spiritual and unifying benefactor!

I am very thankful to South Indian Life Pro-tection Assembly for coming forward topublish this book in 1927 in Tamil. For thecompassionate servants the biography ofBuddha is one of meaningful elucidation.His history and teachings have been clearlydescribed in beautiful Tamil. For the Tamilwoman the Buddha Vijayam will be a coolflower garland, my friend’s conviction.

Like this, the holy biography and teach-ings of the holy Jain king also will be pub-lished entitled “Jinanandham”.

The garden of LumbiniBeing nectar to the senses, Immersing the mind in penance,Being the beauty for the goodness, Being the garden of honey-filled fruits;In Lumbini garden, Bearing the baby of eminence Maya shone one day, Among the tender leaves of the asoka tree!
