A STEELE FAMILY HOLIDAY CONCERT AT BETHEL
NOVEMBER 2013 VOLUME 13, ISSUE
You may have had the privi-lege of hearing Jearlyn and Billy Steele when they visited Be-thel back in January. We had an overwhelm-ingly positive and enthusiastic response from our congrega-tion and the visitors that joined us that Sun-day.
We’re excited to have not only Jearlyn and Billy, but also Fred, J.D. and Javetta coming back to Bethel for a special holiday concert! The date is
Saturday, November 30th and they’ll begin at our Highlands
campus at 7 pm (right after the 5:30 worship service con-cludes). Tickets are currently on sale, have been selling well, and are only $15 a seat/adults and $10/students! (As op-posed to the $75 you’d pay, if you were hearing them at the Guthrie Theater, or another Twin Cities venue!)
Besides being regulars on Gar-rison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion Show, the Steeles
have performed and recorded all over the world with the likes of: Mahalia Jackson, George Clinton, Kim Carnes, Prince, Donald Fagen and Steely Dan, Bill Cosby, Mor-gan Freeman, James Cleve-land, Rod Stew-
art, Mavis Samples, Jonny Lang and more! This Holiday Concert will highlight Christ-mas tunes of the season as well as the tremendous talent of these Grammy-winning artists!
I hope you’ll join us for this great opportunity, and bring your friends and family of all ages! Don’t wait to get your tickets! (It’s general admission seating, and only a limited number will be sold.) What a great way to welcome in the Advent/Christmas Season right here in Hudson and at Bethel! Don’t miss the fun, ex-citement, meaning and faith of this special event! Hope to see you there!
God’s Blessings!
Pastor John Lestock
AN INVITATION TO PRE-
SCHOOL CHAPEL TIME The second week of the month
BHP will have Chapel Time with
musicians and a pastor, and
we’d love to have some of our
community join us. The children
will still sit with their classes, and
you can sit in the rows behind
them. Sometimes we grownups
learn the most when we have
faith like a child, and learn the
Bible stories all over again. Join
us! November 13th, 9:05 am
and November 14th, 9:05 am
& 12:35 pm.

DOUBLING YOUR
CHOICE DOLLARS!

great opportunity for you to help
Bethel, and it won’t cost you a
thing! Between October 1st and
November 30th Thrivent Finan-
cial will DOUBLE all Choice Dol-
lars directed to churches!
If you have accounts with
Thrivent, simply 1) call 800-
THRIVENT (800.847.4836) and
say “Thrivent Choice”, or 2) Go
to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice,
on the web …and simply name
BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH of
HUDSON, WISCONSIN as the
recipient of your dollars avail-
able. (Otherwise your dollars
will be diverted into a national
fund.) Thanks for helping Bethel
with some additional, and well
appreciated, dollars!
THANK YOU
Thank you to everyone who
filled a school bag or made
bags and brought supplies.
Bethel filled 81 bags for
Lutheran World Relief. These
bags get shipped to natural dis-
aster areas like Haiti or poverty
stricken areas such as Africa
and India. Extra supplies went to
our own Hudson schools, as well
as to the Wolf Creek School on
the Pine Ridge Indian Reserva-
tion. Your giving truly makes a
difference!

on Wednesday, November 6 from 1-3 pm at Bethel Down-town. Book Club is open to all who enjoy a good book and lively discussion.
KNIT-WITS:
NEW MEETING DATE! Knitters and crocheters: dust off your craft needles—it’s time again for Knit-Wits! The Knit-Wits will now meet on the FIRST Wednesday of the month (please note change), November through March. The first meeting will
be on Wednesday, November
6th at 10 am in the Downtown lounge. This group is open to anyone who enjoys knitting or crochet-ing, and anyone who would like to learn! It’s a great way to pass the cold winter months with friends new and old, making prayer shawls for Bethel’s prayer ministry.
MANY THANKS!
Another successful Scandina-vian Food Fest has now been added to Bethel’s history. The event could not happen with-out the hundreds of helping hands and hearts that lend support.
The Women of Bethel express sincere thanks to all who con-tributed in any way and hope it was an opportunity for you to meet some fellow members you hadn’t previously known. We are a two campus church, but one congregation, which is evident when so many come together to make the fest a re-ality. Proceeds from the fest will be used for various service pro-jects of Bethel.
NOVEMBER 2013 5
Plan to join us for Bethel’s own American Festival of Thanks-giving service, Wednesday
evening, 7 pm, November
27th at our Downtown cam-pus! We’ll share communion together in this “blended” service. And of course, we’ll have something for the kids. Afterwards, you’re invited to
share a piece of homemade pie and a cup of coffee or
punch downstairs in the fel-lowship hall. Whether you tend to worship at Highlands or Downtown, we hope you will be sure to be with us for this important ser-vice . . . who in the world, more than Americans, have a reason and a responsibility to say “thank you” through our
Thanksgiving worship? Bring family members and friends and don’t miss this meaningful time and tradition at Bethel! See you then! Please note: this service is in place of the 9 am Thanksgiving Day service.
A YOUNG AT HEART
CHRISTMAS
Is it ever too soon to start thinking about Christmas? The
Young at Hearts can enjoy the comedy, “A Carol of a Christ-
mas” at the Fanny Hill Din-ner Theater in Eau Claire on Wednesday, November 20th.
The hero, Rudy, finds out that he is supposedly related to Ebe-nezer Scrooge. His wife val-iantly tries to point out that Scrooge is a fictional character, but Rudy is undaunted. Rudy is taken on a wild ride with some of our best loved characters that reaffirm the true meaning of Christmas.
Lunch at the Dinner Theater will be a traditional holiday meal. The bus will leave Down-town at 10:30 am and will return by 5 pm. The all-inclusive price for the holiday meal, show and
bus is $39. Please sign up at the
Downtown welcome center. The deadline for signing up and paying is November 10th.
****For those eagerly awaiting the big news, the answer is. . . . [drumroll]: the Mayans ate lots of corn-based breads and drinks, supplemented with wild game and fruit.***
Sunday, Nov. 3rd, 5 pm
at Willow River Cemetery
A brief, but meaningful service
in remembrance of all the saints
who have gone before us. This
year we will pause at the grave-
sites of several Bethel members.
The Bethel Bell Ensemble will
lead our processional. (Please
dress casually and appropriately
for the weather. In case of in-
clement weather, we will meet at
the Highlands campus. Please
call the church if in doubt.)
Please join us immediately fol-
lowing the service for a home-
cooked meal at Bethel’s Down-
town campus.
Please note: there will be a mini-
mal amount of walking, and the
ground we cover is relatively
flat.

VIA DE CRISTO:
JANUARY WEEKENDS
About 30 years ago, Lutherans became involved in Via de Cristo, a renewal movement started on an island in the Mediterranean. Since then, over 17,000 Lutherans have been involved in this lay movement. Bethel decided to become a part of the move-ment 15 years ago and has had about 60 members attend a three-day weekend. The weekends are conducted in various churches. Partici-pants come from all over the metro area—35 men one week-end, 35 women the next. There are no costs. Each per-son has a sponsor. You have no responsibilities other than to attend. No pressure. Meals are provided. You sleep at the church. Fifteen Biblical pres-entations are heard. Commun-ion is celebrated. There are “down times.” The next weekends will be
held in Brooklyn Center, January 16-20 for men and January 23-26 for women. If you’d like more information or would like to attend, please contact Chuck & Ruth Lewis or Ann & Paul Martinson.

We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God's
ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group ac-tivities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! FPU classes meet for around an hour and a half each week for nine weeks.
In just nine lessons, you'll learn to take control of your money, invest for the future, and give like never before. Don't worry! You won't be asked to share any personal financial information during the class.
Classes will be held weekly at 4 pm from Sunday,
January 12-Sunday, March 9 in the Highlands chil-dren’s theater.
A preview will be shown on Sunday, November
24th, 11 am at Bethel Highlands in the children’s
theater and 12:15 pm at Bethel Downtown in the
lounge. For more information, please contact Kelly Carrier at [email protected]. To sign up and pay for
your class, visit www.daveramsey.com, click on
Classes, then scroll down to Find a Class. You
will see Bethel’s class listing. Please note: pay-ment and sign-up is ONLY on the Dave Ramsey site, not on Bethel ‘s Web site.

NOVEMBER 2013 11
Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is an international nonprofit ministry of U.S. Lutherans, working to end poverty and injustice by empowering some of the world's most impover-ished communities to help themselves. In 2012, LWR reached 7.8 million people in 35 countries and implemented 189 projects. As of June, 2013, nearly 12,000 people in the Philippines remain displaced in evacuation centers, while nearly 922,000 are still dis-placed outside of centers due to Typhoon Bopha. LWR re-ports that more than 91,000 people in the Philippines have received Quilts and Kits, in-cluding Personal Care Kits, Baby Care Kits, School Kits, LWR Mission Quilts and other health care items, and many more are still needed. LWR has also pledged $25,000 to provide relief assistance to families affected by recent se-vere flooding in northern India that forced 100,000 people to evacuate, and killed more than 1,000 individuals.
Today and every day, Lutheran World Relief Quilts and Kits give families throughout the world a helping hand, a sign of comfort and hope for the future. As the intensity of hu-manitarian needs in-creases worldwide, the requests for these Quilts, Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits and School Kits are also on the rise. WE CAN HELP Lutheran World Relief respond to these
and other needs around the world with simple gifts that
convey a priceless message of love and commitment to peo-
ple in desperate need. Thanks to their dedication and the generous contributions of many, the women of Bethel have been assembling these much-needed Quilts and Kits for LWR throughout the year. We will have special
dedication services on Satur-day and Sunday, November
16 and 17 to bless these Quilts and Kits before they
are delivered to the LWR warehouse for distribu-tion. Each year LWR spends nearly $1.7 million to oper-ate its Quilt & Kit Minis-try. Those funds, combined with the generosity of quilters and kit-makers throughout the United

States, enable LWR to distrib-ute more than $12 million worth of Quilts and Kits annu-ally. The approximate cost to deliver each Quilt overseas is $2.25; each School Kit - $1.40; each Personal Care Kit - $2.65 (includes the cost of adding toothpaste); each Baby Care Kit - $1.30; each Fabric Kit - $1.00; and one 18-pound car-ton of soap - $11.60. To help
ensure that the Quilts and
Kits assembled by the women of Bethel reach those who
need them most, a special of-fering for the LWR & Kit
Shipping Fund will be taken during dedication services on November 17 and 18. Please consider supporting this spe-cial mission project. For more information about LWR and these special pro-jects, visit their Web site at www.lwr.org, and also see the displays in the lobbies Down-town and at Highlands.

BRING JOY
AND HOPE
TO A CHILD Each year, Bethel friends
of all ages participate in
Operation Christmas Child. This program brings
joy and hope to children in desperate situations around
the world. A shoebox filled with small toys, school
supplies, other gifts, and a personal note can introduce
a hurting child to God's love. Look for displays at
both locations beginning Saturday, Nov. 2nd.
Shoeboxes can be dropped off through Sunday,
November 17th. You may also choose to make a
financial contribution online on their Web site:
www.samaritanspurse.org, with a credit or debit card.
Then you can print out the EZ give label that is sent
with your e-mail receipt. The barcode on the label
allows OCC to send you an e-mail to let you know
which country your gift went to and information about
OCC there.
A Bethel group will help pack up shoeboxes for ship-
ment overseas at the OCC Packaging Center on
Tuesday, December 3rd, 5-9 pm and Thursday,
December 5th, 2-6 pm. If you’d like to help, please
contact Alan Park [email protected] or through
the church office at 715.386.8821.
