The Word of God is not a word to apply in our daily lives at some
later date; it is a word to heal us through, and in, our listening
here and now.
The questions therefore are: How does God come to me as I listen
to the word? Where do I discern the healing hand of God touching
me through the word? How are my sadness, my grief, and my
mourning being transformed at this very moment? Do I sense the
fire of God's love purifying my heart and giving me new life?
These questions lead me to the sacrament of the word, the sacred
place of God's real presence.
At first this might sound quite new for a person living in a society
in which the main value of the word is its applicability. But most
of us know already, generally unconsciously, of the healing and
destroying power of the spoken word. When someone says to me,
"I love you,: or "I hate you," I am not just receiving some useful
information. These words do something to me. The make my
blood move, my heart beat, my breathing speed up. They make
me feel and think differently. They lift me up to a new way of
being and give me another knowledge of myself. These words
have the power to heal or to destroy me.
When Jesus joins us on the road and explains the scriptures to us,
we must listen with our whole being, trusting that the word that
created us will also heal us. God wants to become present to us
and thus radically transform our fearful hearts.
—Henri Nouwen
WITH BURNING HEARTS: A MEDITATION ON THE EUCHARISTIC LIFE
Next Sunday we celebrate the birthday of the church, as well as the gift of the Holy Spirit given at Pentecost. We encourage you to wear something red to Mass as an outward symbol of the fire of God’s Spirit in our parish and the Holy Spirit moving within our faith community to gather us, transform us, and send us out.

Help Needed
We are in need of money counters for the weekend collection. Counting is done on Monday mornings from 9am to 10:30am. There are two teams, so you only count every other week. If you are willing to help on a regular basis or as a substitute, of if you have questions, contact our financial secretary, Net Larson, 515-292-3810 or [email protected]. We would
really appreciate the help in this ministry.
Invitation The family of Deacon John and Ruth McCully invite you to join us in celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at an informal reception in the St. Cecilia Social Hall from 1-3:30pm on Saturday, June 10. The couple requests no gifts, but cards are welcome.
New Faces in the Office Keith Allerton, Vice-President of the Steier Group, has been here at STA for a few weeks – helping us get things done in advance of our Endowment Campaign. Keith is originally from Council Bluffs and graduated from UNI. Among Keith’s many
accomplishments was leading the University of Nebraska, Lincoln’s St. Thomas Aquinas Church to a record-setting $7M raised in the first year of their campaign. Keith and Joe are working with the Supple Endowment Board and a dedicated group of alumni and friends in our Campaign Cabinet and planning travels to some 18 cities to engage alumni leaders in support of our future – endowing a significant part of our campus ministry program so more of our parish’s budget can support
ministries central to the lives of our resident parishioners. Nathan Hall is at ISU from Cedar Falls majoring in Criminology & Criminal Justice with a background in computer engineering and is in the office part-time working with the conversion of our database to a new integrated system that will help us “STA-In-Touch” with our 36,000 alumni and friends around the country.
