y fellow anglers and friends,

is issue (October 2013) marks our rst anniversary

nce our rst issue back in October 2012. We met

th a lot of roadblocks, issues (technical and not

chnical), took a lot of risks, and we made it one year

spite the odds.

e have been told that we would not make it past our sixth issue and there

as a lot of scepticism as we embarked on our adventure. The reason is that

e are giving The Asian Angler out for free and the only way to keep the com-

ny a oat is with advertising.

ere were times when we had to survive on instant noodles and lots of bread

our nances ran dry and yet we needed to upgrade our systems and what-

ts. It was tough and I have to admit that we did ask ourselves if we could go

any longer.

s all of you that we have to thank for giving us the motivation to go on pass

ese hurdles. We received email thanking us and wishing us well. There were

aders gave us ideas on what we could do. But most of all we knew we are

the right path when we started growing globally.

e thank you for a good 1st year and we will most certainly do our best toake The Asian Angler a more enjoyable magazine for all. With that in mind

e will be launching the bahasa Malaysia issues targeting the middle of this

onth as we received a lot of request for such.

ank you for your support and tight lines. Enjoy this issue.

Abu Garcia has over the years been

pushing out more and more extreme

reels. They have been pushing the

bar further and further with every new

extreme JDM (Japan Domestic Prod-

uct) reel. When you thought they have

reached a limit, out pops another one.

Afxed your eyes for here comes the

Revo LTZ AE74-Racing.

Signature Reel

Slowly making my way to the sleek,

black, side plate that is painted with a

yellow stripe, I see this signature at the

area just beside the thumbar. Looking

at the signature you can tell that the

person who signed it has a sporting

nature. The signature belongs to

IMAKATSU(Katsutaka Imae).

25

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 14/167

IMAKATSU(KatsutakaImae)

So who is Imakatsu? He is a well known

top pro angler in the Japan bass tourna-

ment circuit. He holds many titles. Hewas the Bass Angler of the year in 1989,

1990, and 1992. He won the Japan Su-

per Bass Classic in 1996 an 1998. He

won the Basser All Star Classic in 1991

and 1992. In 2003 he won the Japan

Bass Champion of Champions tourna-

ment. He is the champion of the Japan

Bass series in 2001 and 2004. He is also

the champion in the Japan Bass Elite 5

contest in 2005.

With a plethora of titles under his belt I

am sure that he knows his shing tackle

really well. The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ

AE74-Racing is one of those reels that is

built for him in accordance to his needs,

thus you see his signature on this beast

(meant in a very good way).

Delicate Crest Design

Walking behind the reel to the other side

and my attention was attracted by the

spool control knob. Unlike the Revos

before, this one comes with a well deli-

cately embossed crest of the Swedish

royal courts. This emits a hint of sport-

ing luxury of which you will probably

nd sitting on the grill of a Rolls Royce.

Brushed Aluminium

Sit inside any luxury sports car today

and you will see brushed aluminium

trims adorning its dash and certain ar-

eas of the cabin. The Revo LTZ AE74-

Racing too showcases a brushed alu-

minium rim that is ported, sitting right

behind the star drag giving it the sporty

luxury look. This side plate also pays

tribute to the earlier Abu Garcia Morrum

 AE74.

Carbon Fibre Handle

Step back out a little and you come to

the carbon bre handle. Carbon han-

dles are lighter and they look good but

they are quite common these days with

mid to high-end reels. Worry not, if you

have some money to throw, you can opt

to pickup something hip from Hedgehog

Studios if not just stick to the very reli-

able original carbon handle.

33

Handle Knobs

Handle knobs? What’s the big deal? All

reels have handle knobs. Well, The Revo

LTZ AE74-Racing doesn’t just come with

any handle knobs. It comes with the BFC

light nesse knob. So you didn’t know

that there are knobs for nesse baitcast-

ing? Well, now you do.

35

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 19/167

From a distance they look very much

like ordinary rubber handle knobs. But

they are actually made of plastic (some

type). Well, plastics are lighter than

rubber right? The handle knobs do feel

light yet they don’t feel cheap. I am not

a fan of plastic knobs but this, I really

don’t mind at all.

Extra Super DuraluminDrive Gear

Now wait a minute. What the heck is

duralumin? Duralumin is a type of alloy

that is hard, strong, and lightweight that

was widely used since its development

in 1903. They were used in airplanes

and airships, precision tools, auto body

parts, etc. Over the years, with advance-

ment in technology the use of duralu-

min include engine parts in aircraft and

spacecraft fuel tanks. Now you have it

in your reel.

Enhanced Magnetic Brakes

When it comes to magnetic brakes, the

magnets on these brakes are stronger

than magnets on earlier Abu Garcia

Revos and Max reels. Having stronger

magnets creates stronger electromag-

netic elds of which makes control the

spool better. But due to the lightness of

the spool, you still need an “educated”

thumb.

41

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 22/167

The Magnetic brakes also feature two

modes; one for casting and the other for

Pitching. Turning the dial towards Max

helps with casting. Turning the dial clock

wise to the bottom helps you with pitch-

ing. Upon removing of the side plate you

will notice that there are more magnets

at the casting setting area since more

control is needed for casting, as com-

pared to the pitching area.

43

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 23/167

Superlight Spool

The LTZ AE74-Racing comes with two

spools a shallow spool that can take

about 100 meters of 8lb lines and a su-

per shallow spool that has only half of the

shallow spools line capacity. Can some-

one call the mental institution please!

This has gone from insane to total mad-

ness and I like madness.

45

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 24/167

So if you are into casting tiny little light

lures then this reel is a must have.

However, do note that the spool is not

meant to be used on your battle with

giant shes. The spool is thin and light

and as with all things, it too does have

a limit. Treat it with respect and you will

be ok.

47

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 25/167

How about the design? Well, if the

spool design cues were to be use

in Ferraris air cool engine system,

the engine will probably not even

get warm. Just the spool on the ear-

lier Revo LTX, this one has got lots

of holes. The more holes there are

the lesser the weight. Holes equals

good. Agree?

49

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 26/167

BearingsThis reel comes with 10 BF-XT bear-

ing and 1 roller bearing giving the

reel a smooth performance. Turning

on the handle I hardly felt any weight

on the spool and the rotations are

smooth and light. However, if you

want to soup it up further, you can

replace them with Hedgehog’s AIR

bearings.

Missing Weight Factor

When you see a word like ”Rac-

ing” printed on something, it usual-

ly means that that thing is fast and

abnormally light. In the case of the

Revo LTZ AE74-Racing (there you

go again), it is actually light. Abu

Garcia claims that it weighs only

163 grams.

53

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 28/167

My Thoughts

The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ

 AE74-Racing is like a high

performance sports car. It

comes fast but allows you

the opportunity to tune and

make it go even faster, even

lighter, and even hotter. With

aftermarket parts available

this is indeed a reel for an-

glers who want something

that makes the word com-

mon almost a banned word.

Clicker; makes noise as the sh

takes your lines out.

55

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 29/167

There are basically two kinds of car own-

ers. The ones that buy a car and keep it that

way until owner and car part ways. Then

there is the other that buys a car, turns it

into a monster, and then force hell to break

loose. If you fall under the second category,

damn, you are going to love this reel.

Unfortunately, this reel is not for everyone.

I mean anyone can buy it but not ever one

who buys it will be able to appreciate it. It

is for the select few that shes unlike the

masses. The Abu Garcia Revo LTZ AE74-

Racing is not just a reel. It is a statement.

Zen Zagan Micro StageDrop Flickn A State Of Zeny Philemon Foo

When it comes to zen, it is com-

monly used to refer to a state of to-

tal togetherness of body, mind, and

soul of which simply means; com-

plete and absolute peace. These

rods that we are playing with are

the Zagan Micro Stage “Drop Flick”

by Zen.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 32/167

How does one nd complete and

absolute peace in a rod? This time

“zen” probably comes in the form or

rather a state of total togetherness

of power, strength, lightness, and

sensitivity; a package that reminds

me of some old Kung Fu ideology

of which is graceful like a swan but

still deadly.63

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 33/167

A Different Type Of Blank

The Micro Stage some with a

blank that is made of low resin

high tenacity carbon of which

gives it a more powerful blank.

The rod comes with a backbone

of about 70% and a slow taper tip

that gives it the ability to ick out

light jigs.

65

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 34/167

Quality Components

The Micro Stage comes with Fuji K

Guides of which reduces friction be-

tween lines and guides. This quality

Fuji guides also come with a strong

frame that is resistant to corrosion

of which is an important quality for a

saltwater rod.

67

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 35/167

The reel seats on both rods are also

Fuji of which is known to keep your reel

in place with little or no movements.

Having such high quality components

on a rod gives the angler added con-

dence especially when playing the sh

as he or she knows that these compo-

nents will do their part well.

69

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 36/167

Balanced And Light

Weightlessness is the current

name of the game. The other

factor is balance. Magicians can

levitate things and make stuff dis-

appear. I too can do such forms

of wizardry. I recently met a new

angler who wrote to us for advice

on shing tackle and showed him

a bit of magic as I explain rods to

him.

71

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 37/167

Meeting him at a lake in Subang Jaya (Selangor,

Malaysia), I asked this new comer if he believed in

magic. He says for entertainment sake, yes. So I

went on to tell him that I am a magician and I am

about to defy the laws of gravity right before his

very eyes. I picked up the Micro Stage that was in

my car at the time and handed it to him. I asked

him if he thought that the rod was light.

73

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 38/167

He did as the only rod that he has

is one that was recently given to

him by his uncle who has since

stop shing some 15 or so years

back. He handed me the rod that

his uncle gave him and it was a

lot heavier being a breglass rod.

He instantly felt the difference.

75

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 39/167

Then I told him that I am going to

make this rod even lighter. I told

him to point the rod tip straight

out, forward, and parallel to theground. He went “Wow! The

weight disappeared.” There you

go, a bit of magic. This is only pos-

sible with a well balanced rod. He

tried it on his rod and of course it

still felt a “tonne.”

The Micro Stage Drop Flick is in-

deed one very well balanced and

light rod, a rod that our new an-

gler can very well use to impress

his girlfriend’s father who is an

angler. Oh, the only reason our

new angler is taking up shing is

because he actually intends on

impressing his girlfriend’s father.

Casting Ability

While the Micro Stage is a light jigging rod,

it was the only rod (one casting and one

spinning) that I had with me at that time.

To teach our new angler to sh, I equippedthe Micro Stage spinning rod with a spin-

ning reel that was lled with 10lb lines and I

secured a spoon without the hook, to it.

I showed him how to cast by lightly icking

the spoon out using the tip. The Micro Stage

has tip that is able to ick out 12g spoons

with ease. I than got him to cast further the

way we normally cast. After watching me

do it a few times and getting it wrong about

The Micro Stage has a tip that

cast very well and will be superb

when you want to cast out your

micro jigs. The casting model has

a rated jig weight of 8-20 grams

while the spinning model is 10-30

grams. Both cast well within the

weight range.

Before I continue I have to make

clear that I advised our new angler

to look for a spinning rod and that

the rod I showed him was a jigging

rod and not so suited for casting in

lakes the way we did, although it

can be use for such a reason as I

have shown him. Well, he wanted

to impress his girlfriend’s father

who is an angler. He will have touse appropriate equipment.

Back At The Lab

Although we didn’t catch anything, it was

still fun meeting up with a new angler and

making a new friend. Anyway, back at the

lab we put the Micro Stage through the

standard tests.

Pressure Test

The Micro Stage has specied that the

max drag these rods can take is 4kg or

about 8.9lb. We started with the Micro

Stage casting rod, securing a drag check

meter to the line and gave it a few yanks.

We then proceeded to increase the pres-

sure.

83

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 43/167

I tightened the drag on the reel andcontinued to add more pressure

on the rod while my lab assistant

monitored the drag checker, look-

ing at it via safety goggles (safety

rst). We managed to get the pres-

sure all the way up to 8.9lb and that

is when he gave the signal to stop

signaling that the rod met its drag

specication.

85

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 44/167

Next we tested the Micro Stage

spinning rod of which also has

a specied max drag weight of

4kg. This rod managed to hit

almost 10lb which means that it

passed the specied max drag

rating.

My Verdict

Both Zen Zagan Micro Stage Drop Flickrods look good with carbon wraps, quality

EVA, and quality Fuji components. What’s

more important is that they met their spec-

ied claims. We had just one remark from

one of the anglers that saw the rod who

thought that the handle was about an inch

too long but then again that was just one

angler.

All in all I feel that the Micro Stage is a

good rod and it has already proved itself

out at sea. One thing to note is that this

rod being a low resin carbon rod requires

extra care. Whenever you travel with

them, ensure that you keep them in a rod

bag. If you are looking for a micro jig rod,

check this out.

The Monster Truck Of Fishing :Ryobi Turbo

y Philemon Foo

Monster trucks are tough, huge, and they really

mean business. What would your rst reaction

be if you were to see one closing up on you in

your rear view mirror? Mine would be “I better

get the hell out of its way lest I end up coming

one with the tarmac.”

This Means Business

The rst time I laid eyes onthe Ryobi Turbo, what came

out of my mouth was, “damn,

this is one mean shing ma-

chine.” When I picked it up my

initial thoughts were conrmed.

I wasn’t holding a rene, silky,

“hello beautiful” kind of a reel.

What I had in my hand is a

monster. A monster that makes

“workhorses” shit bricks. Par-

don my language but damn.

97

New Realization

When I picked up the reel for the

rst time, I felt the weight instantly.

How not too when all these while

I have been picking up light reels.

I was asking myself if the weight

would be a put off. I mean, every-one is going light weight these days

right? This reel moves in the other

direct opposite direction.

Truth is there are two extremes in

our sport of shing. Personally I

have been playing at one extreme

where we use light tackle to play

big game. A lot of tackle in the mar-

ket are made for this segment. In

this segment we want things rene,

smooth, sexy, with gears and bear-

ings that are light and tough. But

lightness seems to be the more im-

portant factor. That is why design

houses like Hedgehog Studios are

in business.

99

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 51/167

The other extreme is the one where they don’t

give a crap about lightness. Toughness, pow-

er, strength, and madness are all that matter.

The Ryobi Power sits in this segment. The tar-

get game would be bottom monsters like giant

groupers, large amberjacks, huge tunas, and

probably the giant Humboldt squid. They don’t

give a rat’s ass about letting the sh run and

things like that. It’s a battle of muscles and in-

tense bad language.101

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 52/167

So let me make this really clear right now. If

you are looking for a reel that is light, smooth,

pretty, sexy, hot; then this is not your reel. But

if you are the brute that don’t give a crap, don’t

take crap from anyone, and getting pull over-

board by a monster grouper makes your day;

this reel is made for you.103

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 53/167

Toughness All Around

Try twisting the stem of this reel

and try bending the rotor... Hel-

lo, did you not read the earlier

pages? It is pretty much use-

less trying to arm wrestle a two

tonne giant. I have never arm

wrestled a two tonne giant and I

don’t want to.

105

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 54/167

This reel is made tough. No way will

it ex. The only way for it to ex is

when you are in a battle with giant

brute. Even then I doubt it will ex

unless you yourself happen to be

a two tonne giant. If so I seriously

hope you accept my sincere apolo-

gies for the above statements and I

still won’t arm wrestle you.

Dual Speed

There are not many dual speed spin-

ning reels in the market. Do we need a

dual speed spinning reel? Well, do we

need a car with more than a hundred

horse power? Do we need cargo pants

with plenty of pockets? Do we need

strawberry ice cream since vanilla is

the most eaten ice cream in the world?

We may not need all these but we cer-

tainly want them.109

High Gear Ratio

Press in the silver cylinder at thehandle stem, turn the handle, and

you feel the gear change. With that

the rotation feels tighter. Now you

are in high gear. The high gear ra-

tio is 5.2:1. If you are twirling your

eyes telling yourself “no big deal,”

then you need to ponder this. Are

monster trucks made to race Fer-

raris?

Low Gear Ratio

Press down the copper coloured

switch at the handle stem, turn

the handle, and you feel the gear

change again. Now the rotation

feels lighter. You are in low gear.

The gear ratio now is 2.9:1. Yes

it is slow but you need this. Imag-

ine driving down hill without lower

gears. You’re going to burn your

breaks buddy.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 58/167

Why Dual Speed?

Well, when you are out at sea

bottom shing and the shing

is slow. You tend to wish that

your reel has a Ferrari engine

to speed up the reeling in. This

is normally when you reel up to

check your bait. But when you

are on to a serious brute, the low

speed gearing gives you lots of

cranking power. Now you havethe better of both worlds.

Language Of Power

When you look at the RyobiTurbo, everything says power.

From the freaking thick bail wire

to the industrial looking handle

all the way to the drag knob; its

power, power, power. Even the

gearbox reminds me of the old

 American muscle cars; where

its engine block sticks out of its

bonnet and blocks the drivers

view. It’s not meant to be pretty

but it says “don’t you freakin’

mess with me.”

Let’s Talk About Lines

So how much line can this mon-ster take? If you are shing with

50lb lines, this monster can hold

up to 420 meters. If you are ex-

tracting a giant groupers tooth

with 60lb lines, you can do it at

350 meters. If you intend to pull

out that groupers jaw using 80 lb

lines; that is possible at 270 me-

ters. These measurements are

based on PE lines.

What’s In My Mind?

I need more equipment in my lab. That

is one. Oh, the reel. The Ryobi Turbo

is seriously insane. Sorry, I meant in-

sanely mad. I am not much of a mon-

ster truck person but if I have to sh

with such a monster, I will choose the

Ryobi Turbo. It does not cost as much

as a Stella. It may be a bit heavier but

like I said, when it comes to games at

this extreme, who the #&%@ cares

about weight.

123

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 63/167

The high gear ratio being 5.2:1 is fast

comparing to other size 20000 reels

(Stella is at 4.4:1) of which is a plus

point to keep in mind. The gear ratio

at 2.9:1 is plenty of cranking power. It

is a super tough machine inside out.

Just look at that thick shaft, it says “I

am tough.”

It is by no means a reel designed to

attract you by beauty but if you are the

James Dean type of person; executive

by day, rebel by night, this is denitely

your machine. If I were to have an ap-

pointment with some of the monsters

of the deep and I am not allowed to

use a winch and a harpoon, this will

be my winch of choice.

Note: The reel shown here is a proto-

type. The production reel may be of

different color.

The Daiwa Tatula reel (Type R) will

soon be reaching our shores (tar-

geted November 2013). When Dai-

wa rst launched the T3 reels with

the “T-Wing” system I thought it was

a good idea especially how the line

ows more freely with less friction

during the cast.

However it wasn’t a real hit as the

earlier “T” models had a ip up front

plate or what I called the “bonnet;”

and that needed some convinc-

ing and getting used to. There were

some amounts of scepticism within

the angling community.

Daiwa Project T

Daiwa may not have won the battle but they kept their eyes

on winning the war. With that in mind they embarked on

improving on a good idea, the T-Wing system or TWS for

short. So they set about with Project T and created the new

Daiwa Tatula baitcasting reel. Looks like this time they hit

gold.

Daiwa Tatula Reel

Daiwa created the Tatula reel to be one of the

best reels in the bass circuit taking into ac-

count disadvantages and strengths of current

baitcasting reels available. With that they re-

designed the T-Wing System which makes

casting more efcient with added distance but

without the ip up front plate.

They also created what is called the AIR Rota-

tion System of which is a new high precision

gearing system that makes the Tatula a super

smooth performer.

T-Wing System

When you cast using a baitcasting reel, there is some

amount of friction caused by the line rubbing againstthe line guide. The further the line is from the line

guide, the higher the friction due to the extreme an-

gles. Many reel manufacturers have created different

methods and systems to reduce this disadvantage.

Daiwa’s answer to this is the T-Wing system. With a

line guide that is designed like a “T”, what happens

is that when you disengage the spool for the cast,

the “T” guide moves down allowing the line to be at

the top area of the “T” of which is the wide section.

This wide section allows the line to ow freely as it

leaves the spool reducing the extreme angles be-

tween the guide and the line thus reducing friction.

Daiwa Tatula VideosBy Daiwa

When you reengage your spool, the “T” pops back

up forcing your line back into the narrow section

of the “T” guide. Having the line back at the nar-

row section allows the “T” guide to lay lines prop-erly on your spool as you retrieve (much like a

normal line guide) your line.

In short the benets of the TWS are reduced fric-

tion (dramatically), increased casting distance,

smoother cast, and faster drop rate. Genius!Episode 3

AIR Rotation System

The AIR Rotation System is Daiwa’s answer

to smoothness. Daiwa reels before this were

smooth but you were always connected to thegearing which means that you will almost always

feel the gears when you turn the handle. This

is not necessary a bad thing but they’ve done

some improvements.

The Tatula’s AIR Rotation System is so smooth

that you hardly feel the gears. Most anglers will

love the AIR Rotation System as it feels extreme-

ly smooth. Hence the term AIR Rotation System

Longer Handles

The handle on the Tatula is longer at 90mm. This

gives the Tatula added cranking power with high-

er line retrieval per turn. Well, some call this an

illusion but so what? It actually does work. That

is why big game reels have longer handles.

The Tatula uses the swept design for its han-

dle. Many other reels use the swept design as

it makes the reel feel more balanced when it is

being cranked. Swept handles actually reduces

wobbling.

Ultimate Tournament Drag (UTD)

The Ultimate Tournament Drag system found

the earlier T3 (improved over other modelsUTD) models is in the Tatula as well. I am not

sure if it is an improved version. The UTD is a

drag design that increases the drag pressure

while remaining smooth throughout a further

pressure level.

The maximum drag on the Tatula as claimed by

Daiwa is 13.2lb. It is decent taking into consid-

eration the shing conditions today.

Featuring MagForce Z Brakes

The Tatula features Daiwa’s latest magnetic

braking system called the MagForce Z. This lat-

est magnetic braking system of Daiwa’s or anti

backlash control gives you a wider range of ad-

justments as compared to older systems, with a

greater control.

How it works is at the start of the cast, the spool’s

inductor cup is retracted from the magnets re-

moving all magnetic effect on the spool thus giv-

ing you a super fast start-up. As the spool reach-

es the max speed, the inductor cup automatically

goes into the gap between the magnets and is

now using the effectiveness of the magnets to

control the spool.

As the spool begins to slow down, the inductor cup retracts to its original position allowing the

spool to spin longer without the magnetic forces.

This gives you better distance but an educated

thumb is needed.

We see a lot of innovation in rods,

reels, lines, lures, etc. Recently

I visited a tackle store (Kepong

Tackle) in Kuala Lumpur, Malay-

sia, and saw what must be one

of the best innovations in ghting

belts to date.

Being a big game angler, I have

my reservations when it comes to

ghting belts. I hardly use them

these days as I nd them uncom-

fortable to use and somewhat of a

hindrance. However, swage took

these discomforts to mind and

created some of the nicest look-

ing and comfortable to use ght-

ing belts.

Lightweight

With everything else going light,

it makes perfect sense for ght-

ing belts to join the party. After all, a heavy ghting belt is un-

comfortable and can sometimes

feel like your pants is about to

drop of which is not a comfort-

able feeling especially when you

are in battle with a giant brute.

The Swage ghting belt feels

light which is great because

when you are ghting a sh, you

do not want to be ghting your

ghting belt as well.

Most ghting belts are sturdy of

which is good. However, there is

one drawback with a sturdy ght-

ing belt. While playing the sh, a

sturdy ghting belt can sometimes

be quite an irritant especially when

it doesn’t stay in place and starts

to move about, usually upwards.

Swage has eliminated thisproblem somewhat by making

its belts tough and yet exible.

The exibility of the swage

ghting belt allows it to ex ac-

cording to your body’s move-

ment keeping it in position

while you play your sh. This

allows you to focus on your

battle and not the movement

of the ghting belt.

No More Slippage

Have you ever had your rod butt slip off

your ghting belt while you were ghting

a hard ghting sh? Most anglers havebut Swage has eliminated this problem

by using what they call a ball and socket

designed gimbal.

I tested this at all angles that I can think

off and the rod held on securely. We

even tried hitting it out and the rod just

sat in place. This is just great especially

when you do not have to worry about

your rod slipping off and can focus on

the ght.

Tougher Than Nails

All these are great but just how tough is

the Swage ghting belt? It has been test-

ed to a breaking strength of 300kg and

a crushing pressure of 100kg (tested by

manufacturer). It has also a temperature

range of -50 to +50 centigrade.

The manufacturer has also put the ght-

ing belt through 2000 hours of UV protec-

tion tests and saltwater corrosion tests,

of which the belts survived with ying

colors. Tougher than nails? With that sort

of test, nails would have rusted but the

Swage ghting belt survived.

When it comes to choosinga product, cosmetics do in-

belts come in all sorts of

colors. If you’re the jungle

hunter type, there are camo

colors to choose from. If

you are the happy go lucky

hippie sort, there are bright

colors that may tickle your

I So Want One

Well, I don’t normally think much about

ghting belts. In fact I have a few ght-

ing belts sitting at home some of which

are still unused. In all honesty, I would

never have picked up the Swage ght-ing belt if my friend who was with me

had not pointed it out to me.

Now I want one. Not just any one but

the carbon bre designed one. That is

because I am somewhat crazy over car-

bon bre and I like what I saw and felt in

the Swage ghting belt. If you are in the

market for a ghting belt, you seriously

need to take a look at Swage ghting

belts. They look great, gives you com-

fort and condence, and you don’t haveto curse yourself for being penny smart

and pound foolish.

Like every other industry, players in the sh-

ing industry have to be innovative and smart in

order to survive and grow. It is a tough indus-

try with brands constantly innovating products

spending millions to come out with something

better or something special.

The Fortitude Fishing Inc.

While most shing tackle companies are clas-

sied as sporting goods companies, the Forti-

tude Fishing Inc. caught our attention rst for

having a reel that we really like and secondfor being classied as a technology company

within the realms of the shing industry. They

have been selected in 2011 as a Tech com-

The Founder

The Fortitude Fishing Inc. is founded by Da-

vid Lamoureux who is also the CEO who has

been a portfolio manager and derivatives trad-

er specializing in futures and options. It was

from here that he moved into the specialty

metal industry with his partners and formed

a company called Amalgamated Titanium Int’l

Corp.

Together with his partners he has developed

patents, products, and a proprietary titanium

technology. This means that David knows his

metal especially titanium really well and who

better to develop titanium reels other than his

company and him.

There is more to David. He is also an angler, a pio-neer in fact, who once single-headedly demolished

a world record with a 157 pound Bluen Tuna on a

solo kayaking mission, miles off the shore of Cape

Cod in the Atlantic Ocean. His accomplishments

have been documented in the New York Times,

the wall Street Journal, Popular Mechanics, and

also various shing magazines.

If you think that is all, you are wrong. David also

lmed an episode on Discovery Channel’s Animal

Planet called “Off The Hook: Extreme Catches”

which is scheduled to Air in summer this year,2013. If you have seen the episode then you will

probably know who David is.

An Interview With Dave (David Lamoureux)

We recently did an interview with Dave about his shing endeav-

ours, his company, and his plans for Asia; and this is what he hadto say...

The Asian Angler (TAA)

David Lamoureux (DL)

TAA: How long have you been shing?

DL: I have been shing my whole life. I remember my father taking

me freshwater shing when I was 3 years old and I caught a small

sunsh. That’s 43 years.

TAA: What type of shing do you enjoy the most?

DL: I love all types of shing but I like big game shing on light tacklethe most.

TAA: I understand that you were a portfolio manager and a deriva-

tives trader specializing in futures and options. What motivated you

to move into the shing industry?

DL: More specically, I was a commodities trader who moved into the

specialty metals business after developing a proprietary cost effec-

tive titanium technology with my partners. The shing industry was

one of our rst choices to enter because titanium is so applicable to

the market. In other words, there was a dire need for higher quality

and cost effective titanium equipment due to it being impervious-to-

corrosion in salt water, stronger and lighter for handheld tools (sh-

ing equipment) as well as lifetime durability.

I also love shing so this aspect of my career doesn’t even seem like

work. The big game shing was something I was doing which led to

the happy marriage of the two things. I was nally able to devote

more time to something I absolutely love.

177

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 90/167

AA: Did you design shing products such as the Fortitude Titanium

eel before or after you moved into the shing industry?

L: I had designed custom titanium shing products for myself and

ome friends prior to formally entering the shing industry. My unique

yle of shing requires a signicant amount of custom equipment and

one of the reels I bought off the shelf could either meet or stand up

my needs. However, the exquisite functionality of the titanium prod-

cts is also due to my engineering team and not solely me.

AA: Do share with us a bit about your company; how you started?

L: My partners and I developed a proprietary cost effective titanium

chnology which allows us to produce products at a similar price to

ferior aluminum and steel. Following that we researched numerous

dustries for synergies and applicability and the sportshing industry

as one of 4 that we subsequently entered. The others are petroleum,

rms and the marine industries under Amalgamated Titanium Interna-

onal Corporation.

AA: I like the Titanium spinning reel in particular because of its clas-

c design cues but what prompted you to choose a classic reel de-

gn (instead of a modern sporty design) and modernize it with military

rade titanium?

L: Form and function as it pertains to our proprietary titanium tech-

ology was the driving force. Visual aesthetics was a secondary ob-

ctive. We have incorporated so much technology inside the reel that

e wanted to insure that it worked awlessly. This is achieved through

simplied design structure. In essence, we want our reels to last a

erson’s entire lifetime.

AA: Most manufacturers these days use aircraft grade titanium on

eir reels. Why use military grade titanium?

DL: Aircraft grade is based on military specications but we are in

the business of making hand-held tools (shing equipment) that are

meant to be used at sea level and not at 30,000 feet in the air.

TAA: What is the one major selling point that puts the Fortitude Tita-

nium reel above other reels in the market?

DL: It unquestionably has the best cost-to-quality-ratio of any top tier

reel on the market, especially when you consider that it is half the cost

of other top tier reels which are made of inferior aluminum, steel and

plastic. Not to mention, the life time warranty!

TAA: What are your plans for the Asian region?

DL: We are currently looking to develop relationship to have the reel

available in Asia by early 2014. The goal is to establish top ight dis-

tribution partnerships in the market. The focus will remain on making

affordable titanium shing products for users around the globe.

TAA: You have achieved a lot like smashing the 157 pound Bluen

tuna record on a solo kayaking trip, doing episodes on TV channels

such as Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet, and more; what’s next

on your list?

DL: The company and I have begun to work with some exciting sh-ing TV shows although I cannotdisclose which ones at this point. Per-

sonally however, I am looking forward to landing some record sh on

lm next summer from the kayak. In particular, I hope to land a Blue-

n in the 300-400 pound range (135kg-180kg).

TAA: Thank you very much for your time David and we wish you all

the best.

While there are a few reels that uses tita-

nium such as a titanium frame and body

but with copper gears, and stainless steel

ball bearings, etc.; the Fortitude Titanium

reel is made out of titanium inside out.

Even the springs and ball bearings are ti-tanium.

Eye Catching

The rst thing that caught my eye is the

design of the Titanium reel. Being some-

one that loves classic reels, the design

caught pushed the right buttons and I au-

tomatically gravitated towards it. I do have

reels in my collection that look like this

but they’re all classics and made up of old

school materials of which were high-tech

during their era.

Fortitude Titanium Reel

A Reel Spool Of Holes

The other thing that caught my eye

is the amount of holes that the reel

has and with that, I meant the spool

and rotor. Holes not only create a

beautiful visual effect. They also

add on to the weight loss factor.

Every hole you see equals to a cer-

tain amount of weight removed.

Military Grade Titanium

While most brands talk about air-

craft grade titanium being used in

their products, the Fortitude Tita-

nium reel uses military grade solid

titanium. I am not sure what the dif-

ference is but Titanium is a tough

metal that is light and is resistant to

saltwater of which makes it a good

reel for saltwater applications.

Modular Gear BoxAssembly

This is another thing I like about the

Fortitude Titanium reel. This gear box

assembly allows for simple and fast

repair. All you have to do is to remove

the gear box and pop in a new one.

Imagine being on a boat trip and hav-

ing something go wrong inside your

reel. Easy, just change the darn thing

there and then.

My Thoughts

I love the classic design and clean looks. I

love the holes on the spool and the rotor. I like

the idea of the Modular Gear Box Assembly

making maintenance easy. I like tough and I

certainly do like light weight.

It does remind me very much of another reel

call Van Staal but heck this is full on Titanium.

However, I must note that I do not own nor

have I used this reel and one of the things

that I am not sure does indeed lie within the

gear box. There is a reason why reel manu-

facturers use different metals for gears (one

softer and one harder). I am not sure how put-

ting two strong metals of the same type in the

ring and having them punish each other willplay out. Who knows, perhaps Fortitude in-

deed has the winning formula.

I used to hang out at his workshop and

watch him at work intrigued by the moun-

someone else. One can easily tell when

someone is doing a job out of force or out

of passion. When it comes to Kok Ming it

When you look at shing rods,

one of the items you will no-

tice is lure weight or lure Wt. It

could read something like lure

wt. 1/4 to 5/8oz for example.

What this term simply means

is the range of lure weights

that the rod is made to cast.

Well, why is understanding

this important?

Lure 1/4-3/4 oz as in the picture.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 102/167

Mechanics Of Casting

When you cast your lure or bait it is not just

how hard you push the rod that determines

the efciency of your cast. It is also not just

momentum or all the other universal laws that

determines the efciency of your cast. The rod

plays an important part. For this article we will

just stick with the word bait that covers both

articial and natural.

When you swing the rod backward and then

forward again to cast out your bait what hap-

pens is this. First you build momentum and

because your bait or lure weighs a certain

weight, it exes the rod tip backwards into an

arch as it loads up.

203

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 103/167

What happens next is that the

rod tip straightens all the way

back unloading the stored en-

ergy somewhat like a slingshot,

as it shoots your bait forward.

The faster the rod tip recovers

or rather “springs back” to its

original position, the higher the

energy transferred to the bait.

205

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 104/167

The Weight Factor

Understanding what happens to your

rod during the cast will help you un-

derstand why knowing your rod’s lure

weight and working with it is impor-

tant. How efcient your rod is at cast-

ing out or shooting out your bait de-

pends on the weight of the bait.

Using a bait that is too light for your

rod spoils the cast. If the bait is too

light, it will not be able to ex or load

the rod tip and thus does not build

enough energy at the rod tip to shoot

out the bait. The amount of energy

transferred to your bait is too little for

an efcient cast.

Try casting out a weightless y on an

8-20lb fast action rod with 10lb lines

and you will understand what I mean.

Your y would probably be going all

over the place not far from you yet far

from your targeted area. A y is too

light to be cast out and thus y an-

glers use weighted lines to push the

y out.

207

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 105/167

Using a bait too heavy on the other hand

exes the rod tip and the tip does build

energy but because of the bait being too

heavy, the energy that the tip has builtcannot be release efciently. The weight

of the bait slows down the “spring-back”

or recoil of the rod tip to its original posi-

tion thus wasting all that stored energy.

It is like putting a 660cc engine into an

old Volvo 740GL. It moves the Volvo but

you will not be going places as efciently

as a 2400cc engine would, and the fuel

consumption on the little 660 engine will

be a lot higher.

209

7/22/2019 The Asian Angler - October 2013 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-october-2013-digital-issue-malaysia-english 106/167

It is best to follow the range

of lure weights that your rod

is designed to handle. Even

then there is that one “sweet

magical weight” within the

said range that is the best lure

weight to use. Casting lures

of that weight is like driving a

Ferrari on the Autobahn with

no cars around (no, I haven’t

done this but I would love to).

The other problem with cast-

ing too heavy a bait for long

periods of time is that you

wear out your rod tip. Your

rod tip becomes weaker from

the constant stress of trying to

push out a piece of bait that is

too heavy for it to manage.

Sometimes it is impossible to get every-

thing right (unless you can control the

weather). The best thing you can do is to

work with what you have got with you anddo the best possible cast that you can pos-

sibly do.

Summary

Lure weight basically gives you an idea of

the best lure weights to use for a certain

rod. Too light a bait and you will have a

tough time casting it out. Too heavy a bait

and your rod will not be able to get it out

efciently.

Understanding Paddle Tails

When you look at paddle tail soft plasticsyou will notice that the body is thick and thenit slims down towards the tail section and it“fans out” at the tail. This design allows thebody of the bait to remain rigid while the tailgoes wagging. It simulates the movement of a sh.

There are also some differences in body de-signs. Some paddle tail designs come with atand smooth body and some come ribbed. Theribbed designed body emits more vibration un-derwater with hopes of attracting the attentionof shes.

Presentations

In general, the presentation of soft plas-tics have always been said to be slow.

Yes, this is a common and proven methodand rule of thumb. But I am one who be-lieves that rules are meant to be brokensometimes and the rule of thumb for soft-ies is one that has been broken by quitea few anglers especially when the rule of thumb fails and one goes creative.

The paddle tail soft plastics can be pre-sented in many ways of which of courseinclude slow and slow retrieves. The ver-satility of this design lay in its ability of wag its tail. It can be presented as a pan-icking sh, dying or injured sh, leisurely

swimming sh, stationary sh, etc.

Slow Retrieve

This presentation style requires you to slow-ly retrieve your paddle tail at a very slowand constant speed just enough to keep itswimming at certain water depth. Your lurewill look like a sh that is leisurely swimmingabout without a care in the world.

Recommended for use at lakes and pondswith still and shallow waters, you can applythis method just beside weedy areas, alongthe banks, or just to fan an area. In waterswith slight currents, you may need to in-crease your retrieval speed.

Slow retrieve of paddle tailbaits allows the tail to waggleand attract sh.

Retrieve And Pause

Also known as wind and stop or burn and killas the Aussies call it. This presentation stylemimics the movement of a panicking sh. Doabout three to four rotations of your reel andthen pause. What happens is that when youare retrieving your line the lure swims up-wards. When you pause it heads back down. Always pause until you feel you lure touchthe bottom. Most hits occur during the pausewhen the lure drops.

Recommended for use at areas with watersthat are not too deep. About a foot to 8 feetof water will be ideal. Can be used at weedyareas, sandy beaches, lakes, ponds, canals, etc. where underwater currents are very mini-mal to nonexistent.

Jerk And Drop

This presentation style mimics a sick sh that is near-ing the end of its life. Jerk the rod tip upwards anddrop your rod tip. Hold or pause at that position for about three of four seconds. Give it another jerk anddrop again. Hold or pause for three or four seconds.Repeat these steps.

What happens is that when you jerk, you actually dartthe sh upwards. Dropping the rod will allow the shto drop to the bottom. Pause is when the sh lookslike a dead or very close to dying sh. This methodactually attracts shes that are on the lookout for aneasy meal (opportunists).

Recommended for use at waters that are still such asa lake or pond where currents are nonexistent. Fish-es tend to hit it on the drop. Some shes also tend tohit the soft plastic bait while it is sitting at the bottom.

The Bounce

This presentation style mimics a feeding sh that is search-ing the bottom for food. Jerk the rod tip slightly upwards. The idea is to have the paddle tail hop off the groundabout an inch and go back down to the ground. Imaginea sh searching the bottom.

Recommended for use at all types of waters such aslakes, ponds, rivers, streams, ats, etc. The best condi-tions are areas with sandy bottoms and slight currents. You will need to match the size of the paddle tail and jighook weight, to the currents. You want to be able to havethe paddle tail abit sit at the bottom with is tail pointed up-wards at about 45 degrees angle wiggling in the currents.

Swimming About Foliage

Rigged wheedles, paddles tails can be used in weedyareas as well. You can swim your paddle tail aboutweeds, inside the weedy areas, even around lily padsand various vegetation. Paddle tails can also be madeto look like a sh eating or checking out the stems of

these vegetation.

Get creative when you sh soft plastics andcreate your own presentation methods. Thesoft plastic lure is in reality just a tool. Howeffective it is depends on how you use them.I have twitch them hard, play them fast (butcontrolled), added them to spinners andspoons (trailers), and used them without ad-ditional weights; and they have caught sh.So get creative and go catch that sh.

Visiting ParadisesBy Philemon Foo

Well, we are now celebrating our rstanniversary and being an angler’s life-style magazine, we have visited quitea few resorts. While some didn’t makethe cut and did not get published thosethat did made it because they met acertain requirement or standards thatwe have in place.

We have been asked how we deter-

mined if a resort or guesthouse passesour required standards or if we are paidto feature them. No, we have not beenpaid to feature them. In fact we do notget paid at all except for the resort cov-ering our some of our cost.

We take into consideration a fewfactors such as condition of the re-sort (especially rooms, facilities, etc.), quality of service rendered, quality of the facilities available, and lots more; and balance them

over the price or cost of the stay. This helps ensure that you aregetting your money’s worth.

Not all resorts that we have vis-ited made it to the magazine butwe do not just leave it at that. Weactually highlight to the manage-ment why they did not make it to-gether with a detailed property in-spection report on what’s lackingand where to improve together with some recommendations.

What Rights Do We Have ToDo So?

Before spending years in the shing in-dustry as a product designer, developer, specialist, and marketer; I actually spentyears as a hotelier managing differentsections of various resorts. With rsthand hotel experience as well as a trav-eler, I see things from both perspectives

as a guest as well as a resort’s manage-ment’s point of view.

Berjaya LangkawiResort

This is the rst resort that madeit to our magazine back in Oc-tober 2012. We stayed at thechalets on the water wherewe were given one near somerocks. I enjoyed myself catch-ing groupers and a few snap-pers from the balcony.

To date, the Berjaya LangkawiResort is our favourite resort withchalets out at sea. We visited afew of such resorts and my part-ners and I cannot agree any lessthat this is the best within thecategory. It won over its closestrival with much better service, fantastic food, and cleanliness. The room quality also stood outwith better maintenance and at-tention to detail.

Belum RainforestResort

The Belum Rainforest Re-sort made it to our magazineback in November 2012.They were full during our stay and we were quite luckyto get a room. I had friendsover from Hong Kong andUSA there with me duringmy stay. We were shing atBelum and this is the mostcomfortable resort to lay our tired bodies in after a tiringday out on the water.

In all honesty, the Belum Rain-forest Resort barely made it.

The rooms are great. We reallyloved the rooms. Food choiceswere really poor and serviceat the restaurant was slow, but hats off to one of the wait-ers who took it upon himself toensure that we had good foodduring our stay.

but he actually drove all theway into town to get us thefood that we wanted includ-ing a meal of “ikan billis” thatmy American friend was crav-ing for. The kitchen team alsocooked up a few dishes thatwere not in the menu, uponour request, and that madethe experience so much bet-ter.

Nipah Guesthouse,

Pangkor Island

When it comes to budget travel, no

other guesthouse that I have been toeven comes close to the hospitalityand service given. We actually visitedNipah Guesthouse right after our stayat a four star resort and we found thisplace to be better. This speaks vol-umes on the experience that we had.

dating. We even got to have our meals withhorn-bills at the dining area. The rooms arereally clean and comfortable. What I reallymiss is the baked beans specialty cooked by Anuar.

There is nothing not to like aboutthe Nipah Guesthouse. Serviceis fantastic, rooms are clean andcosy, food is good although youhave to prepare other meals on

your own, and the experience isthe best I have had so far evencompared to those of star ratedhotels and resorts.

Credit goes to the owners (Anu-ar & Alicia) and their team. Thisis by far the best guesthouse westayed in.

Swiss Garden Golf &Spa Damai Laut

We featured the Swiss GardenGolf & Spa Resort, Damai Laut, in

our January 2013 issue. It barelymade it to electronic print but itdid as it sits on a good locationespecially for anglers.

What we liked about this resortis the location of which is near Pulau Sembilan (Nine Islands),Pangkor Island, Jarak Island, etc.If you do not want to spend on aboat trip, there are a few placesthat you can sh at within the re-sort.

The resort also offers lots of funactivities for children and thestaffs manning these activitiesare a friendly lot. Food is good too

but a bit on the pricy side. Whatwe didn’t like is the maintenanceand housekeeping of which isquite slow.

Clearwater Sanctuary,Perak

Most anglers in the Peninsular Ma-

laysia would have probably heardof the Clearwater Sanctuary Resortin Perak. This is one of the resortsthat I like a lot too. As an angler what I like is that I get to sh fromthe balcony of the chalet and theshing is quite good.

Should I opt to sh from a boator scanoe, I can rent one at theshing club house, or I couldalso just bring my own boat andthruster and sh at one of thefew lakes within the grounds of the resort. Fishing can be quitesatisfying if you know where tosh at.

There are also lots of facili-ties for the family such as ten-nis, kids club, swimming pool, gymnasium, etc. Even golfersget to go for a game or two atits renowned golf course. Thereis plenty of wildlife to explorearound its grounds. We’ve seenmonitor lizards, otters, and even

came face to face with a wildboar.

The rooms are lovely butdated which I don’t mindfor the price. The balconies

denitely needed somemaintenance work butthey did not fall apart dur -ing my visits. Other thanthat, I have no complainsabout the rooms that I havestayed at.

What’s lacking is the quality of food provided and the main-tenance of the area. Another thing that I complained aboutis the cleanliness of the swim-

ming pool. Anyway, the man-agement have decided to closethe resort for maintenance andwhen they reopen, I will be vis-iting them again.

Payung Guesthouse,Cherating

The Payung guesthouse in Ch-erating offered us a village like

experience. What I like about theplace is that it is rustic, and wegot to stay in a little “KampungHouse” (village house) all toourselves. The air-conditioning(something I cannot live without)worked well to keep the placecool.

As an angler I like the locationwhere I can sh at the beach do-ing surfcasting or at the river for estuarine shes. Points werededucted for housekeeping as

our rooms were a bit dusty andhaving a dusty mosquito net ontop of our bed didn’t go well withmy sensitive nose. The other is-sue was mosquitoes. Other thanthose, the place was great.

Next we were chauffeured to the resortin a very classy MPV with built in sofas, instead of normal car seats, with morewater and towels, and a friendly driver.

Everything was rst class all the wayand the suites were indeed built with at-tention to detail. The facilities were alsorst class like the boat rides, the largeswimming pool, shing pond (average),etc. Well, they have some lows too suchas the slow service by the food and bev-erage team.
