Dear Friends in Christ, We have been reflecting at Sun-day Mass on the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. It begins with fear. The natural desire to help others is tempered by the fear that you will not have enough for yourself. Drawn more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist, you are set free from the fear that you will not have enough. You are set free in the Paschal Banquet to give yourself to others as Christ gives himself to you. This week, Jesus tells us that he is the bread of life. He tells us that he gives us food for the journey. He gives us himself. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (John 6:54). Jesus gives eternal life to whomever receives him. Notice that Jesus uses the pres-ent tense to talk about eternal life. He does not say, “You will have eternal life after you die.” He says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” Eternal life is here and now. Eternal life is much more than unending life beyond death. It is in the present. Eternal life is life so rich and full that we yearn that it may never end. Eternal life is the opposite of

eternal condemnation (John 3:14-18). Eternal life promises life free from sin and death (John 6:50-51). “Eternal Life is life itself,” Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his reflec-tion, Jesus of Nazareth, “real life which can also be lived in the present age and is no longer chal-lenged by physical death.” “And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Eternal life is friendship with the living Lord. His friendship frees you from the fear that you will not have enough. One cold morning in late Janu-ary, John ran into Joe on campus. Both were students at the univer-sity. John started to complain about all the papers he had to write, the tests he had to take, and the craziness of fraternity life. He ex-pected a sympathetic response from Joe, a fellow Catholic. But Joe looked him in the eye and said, “You know, John, if you really believe in Jesus, then noth-ing else really matters that much.” His words struck John like a bolt of lightning. Joe walked on, but John stood still, electrified.

Something in him responded to the truth that Joe had spoken. From that cold morning in late January, John began to change. John joined the Jesuits. He eventually became Father John. As a Jesuit priest, Father John Dear has been arrested dozens of times for civil disobedience against violence and war. He has written many books including A Persistent Peace. “You know, John, if you really believe in Jesus, then nothing else really matters that much.” Taking to heart those words, Father John Dear found real life. Adoration of the Blessed Sacra-ment helps you to taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:9). Lord does great things for others with the little you give him, even if it is only a barley loaf. This week, save a date in your calendar to take advantage of the extra opportunities for Ado-ration of the Blessed Sacrament. Read Chapter 6 of the Gospel of John while spending a holy hour in front of the tabernacle. Extra times are listed in the bulletin. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord! In Christ, Father David

Saint of the WeekSt. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr- Feast Day- August 14

St. Maximilian Kolbe was born in 1894 in Po-land and became a Franciscan priest. He contracted tuberculosis and, though he re-covered, he remained frail all his life. Before his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement devoted to Our Lady. After receiving a doctorate in theology, he spread the Movement through a maga-zine entitled "The Knight of the Immaculata" and helped form a community of 800 men, the largest in the world. Maximilian went to Ja-pan where he built a comparable monastery

and then on to India where he furthered the Movement. In 1936 he returned home because of poor health. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was imprisoned and released for a time. But in 1941 he was arrested again and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. On July 31, 1941, in reprisal for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Father Kolbe offered himself in place of a young husband and father. And he was the last to die, enduring two weeks of starvation, thirst, and neglect. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982.

EVANGELIZATIONIt's FREE - Symbolon

Symbolon aims at an immersion in the Catholic Faith that transforms adults on all levels: how we think, how we pray, and how we live. Need a clearer expla-nation of a particular Church teaching, do you wonder why Catholics believe what we believe and why? Symbolon is adult formation for every parishioner using modern technology; it is designed to help parishioners encounter the sa-credness of the faith. Comprised of 20 short video teachings on various topics of the Catholic faith, Symbolon can be downloaded on any laptop, tablet, or smartphone and accessed at your convenience any time of the day or night.

Go to our website www.oviedocatholic.org and register today to start exploring. Be in the “know” and share your faith - it’s FREE to Most Precious Blood parishioners, what are you waiting for?

Come & SeeHave you been coming to Mass but are not Catholic? Has God placed upon your heart an openness to becoming Catholic, and a longing for a closer relationship with Him as you search for answers to your faith questions? If so, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Join us as we plant the seeds of faith and ex-plore the richness and traditions of Catholicism. Inquiry sessions for the Christian Initiation process (RCIA) have started. These gatherings are for inquirers who are not baptized, as well as those who are baptized in another faith background, or baptized Catholics who have not received any other Sacraments. We invite you to ask questions of what Catholics believe in an open, informal and welcoming envi-ronment. Come and See…Contact Donna Scimeca at 407-365-3231 x121 or [email protected].

Sponsor Ministry (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)Are you being called to walk the journey of faith with someone who wants to become Catholic? An RCIA Sponsor supports an Inquirer seeking the faith to understand Catholic traditions and way of life, not by being a teacher, but by supporting the person and sharing their own experiences of being Catholic. Sponsors are not expect-ed to know the answer to every question, but should have a willing-ness to share their faith,be welcoming and hospitable, and a good listener. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics, received the three sacraments of initiation, and if married, then married in the Catholic Church. Many sponsors find that serving in this ministry renews and enriches their own faith. Training will be provided. For more informa-tion please contact Donna Scimeca at the parish office 407-365-3231 x321 or [email protected]

No matter who you are or where you find yourself in relation to protecting the environment, Pope Francis has this message for you: “I invite all to embrace with open hearts this Encyclical which is in line with the Church’s social doctrine” (General Audience, June 17, 2015).

Did you know:Climate change is a moral issue. We care about the planet be-cause it's created by God. We care even more about people because human life is created by God in His image and likeness. Pope Francis will be offering moral guidance as a pastor. This guidance is rooted in Scripture and central Catholic teachings about care for others and care for God's creation. The time to act is now. As Catholics, we are called to be good stewards of the earth and the people entrusted to our care. Pope Francis is offering hope, encouraging us all to care for oth-ers and for the gift of God's creation. It's time to work together to better protect the created world. Let's build a culture of stewardship.
