The breakfast was exceptionally well organised and all were fed quickly and well. The atmosphere was amaz-ing and the view out of the Museum Shed door as the sun came up was also amazing!! Everyone was in such good spirit it made you want to buy an old car and join the fun. The costumes people wore demonstrated their commitment to such a good cause especially the white space suits worn by the NASA astronauts! The generosity of those who were part of the 2019 Melbourne to Geraldton Variety Club Bash was also shown in the short auction held after the breakfast where for $200 you got to buy a broken tambourine.

Shire of Leonora
Recreation Centre/Swimming Pool
Opening Date
It is planned for the swimming pool to re-open on
Tuesday 8th October, 2019 for the summer months.
Please note that an Organised Sport Program will be
put in place for the summer months, dependent upon
interest and participation. At this stage it will be
co-ordinated and run by Alex Baxter, whilst other
staff are in place at the pool.
The focus will be on Childrens’ Sporting Activities for
Tuesday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, with
adults scheduled for Thursday evening with Indoor
Cricket being proposed, although this can be varied
dependent upon the community’s suggestions.
The program’s times are listed below:
It is important for any of these activities not to
encroach on other sporting activities scheduled in
Leonora during the week, so the selection of these
times and days were designed to fill any gaps
identified. Please do not hesitate to contact Alex
Baxter at the Shire of Leonora on 90367044 or Linda
Gray on 0429 376 044 should you wish further
information on the schedule. This is just a proposal
at this stage so we are happy to hear from anyone
who may have a constructive suggestion.

Leonora Police recently launched
the “Adopt-a-Cop Program” at
Leonora District High School. The
aim is to foster positive relationships
between the Leonora Police and
Leonora District High School
students, staff and community.
The program involves police officers
being allocated a classroom at the
school to attend on a regular basis
and engage with students,
participate in class, school activities
and events.
Potential role of Adopt-a-Cops:
Socialise with students in the
classes, getting to know them
and building rapport
In partnership with teachers,
provide ‘talks’ with classes on
important topics eg. Road
safety, cyber safety, the role
of police etc.
Attend Community Days/
Cultural Days Hand out
awards at assemblies (citizen
award/Adopt-a-Cop award)
Attend appropriate excursions
with approval
Benefits of the program:
The enhanced safety and
wellbeing of children through
education
Positive attitudes among
children, police, teachers
and community
The encouragement of law
abiding behaviour
Increased community
satisfaction with police
and the school
Greater community support of
the police and the school
Developing interagency
partnerships between police
and LDHS.
Police recently helped launch the
Road Safety Initiative with Leonora
District High School. The session
involved the whole school and target-
ed scooter safety, pedestrians,
vehicle awareness and seatbelts.
JuWest provided a semi-trailer as part
of the session which helped the kids
get a visual appreciation of the size,
limited visibility and stopping distance
of large trucks that regularly travel
through town.
A big thank you to all the staff at
Leonora District High School and
JuWest for your valuable support.

On the 5
th August 2019 a group of six students
and two staff from Leonora District High School
flew from Leonora to Sydney to compete in the
first ever INDIGIHack.
INDIGIHack is a hackathon where students from
Leonora, Sydney and New Zealand competed to
create an app or game, based on traditional
knowledge of country, culture and language.
Leonora students were put into two groups. One
of our teams came second with their creation
based on Pokémon Go. The idea is that players
move through country, like The Breakaways,
looking for totems.
All of the teams had to ‘pitch’ their game ideas to
a panel. When Chloe spoke about learning
traditional knowledge and language at school, and
from local elders, one of the judges was so
impressed with the Leonora students, she cried.
Chloe’s pitch even earned her a leadership prize!!!
While we were there, we met some incredible
people. On the first day, we went to Google
Australia and got to see the offices, including a
room with a pool table. We also go to talk to
people who work there.
We went to The Australia Museum and the
University of Technology, Sydney. During the
hackathon, we were interviewed by ABC and
NITV, representing our school and community.
Another exciting adventure was going to Taronga
Zoo. It was so much fun catching a ferry from
Circular Quay and seeing the Harbour Bridge and
Sydney Opera House. The view of the harbour
was incredible. A few funny things happened. Jet
got in the way of a tiger marking its territory and
we saw a seal, stealing a pair of sunglasses.
We would like to thank all of the companies who
helped make this happen through their generosity.
We also want to thank our school for sending us
on this incredible adventure.
We had an awesome time :)
