Meeting February 17 President Gail McCulloch was delighted to welcome our guest speakers John and Kay Eva. She was also delighted to welcome our newest member Joyce Smith, guests Kate Pearson and her Dad Marcus Pearson, Abby and Kerry’s guests Erol Cenza Jnr, and Joliene Crame, Shelley Konig, Kaye Southern and John Lightfoot from the Rotary Club of Albany Port and all members.

Carole Honorary Membership At the last Board meeting it was decided that Patricia Robertson be offered Honorary Membership. Patricia has accepted the offer and thanked the Board for the honour.

Foundation Grants Seminar President Gail thanked Bev Moffat, Heather McNaught, Carole Maxwell and Neil McKay for offering to attend the Foundation Grants Seminar. It has been decided that Bev and Carole will attend. Gail said it was really great to have people willing to help and that it is why our Club is so good.

National Youth Science Forum Gillian Introduced Kate Pearson, our National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) participant who thanked the Rotary Club of Attadale for the opportunity to attend the National Youth Science Forum. Kate said it was a once in a lifetime experience and she was so grateful to have been able to attend. The program enabled her to gain so many connections and network with like-minded people.

Her top three seminars were about neuroscience, the science of taste and critical thinking and philosophy. They were all extremely engaging and challenged her to ask more questions.

The highlights of the forum for her, other than meeting everyone and attending amazing seminars were the disco, home hospo day and the formal dinner. Kate was very fortunate to be able to spend home hospo day with Rob and his family who were so inviting and friendly.

The Rotary Club of Attadale received a letter from the Home Host family who Kate spent a day with. They said: - ‘I just wanted to congratulate your Club on your selection process in sponsoring Katie to attend NYSF. She is a delightful young lady … polite, friendly, fun, helpful, quirky sense of humour, respectful, vibrant, thoughtful, happy …. not sure there enough compliments in the dictionary. We would love the chance to meet her again one day.

Gillian introduced Erol Cenza Jnr our Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) participant Erol was very grateful to his host family Abby and Kerry Parsons and the Rotary Club of Attadale for the opportunity to attend RYLA.

He said it was an experience that will change his life. He was able to participate in a wide range of activities that were challenging and rewarding. The other participants were an amazing group of people that he formed a bond with.

Gillian was delighted to present Erol with a certificate of participation.

Guest Speaker Kay Eva Stitches of Hope

Stitches of Hope started with the passion and desire of one person, Kay Eva, from Gidgegannup, Western Australia. As a teenager, Kay had a dream to work in a third world country and give all that she had to raise the skills ability and living conditions of as many people as possible. Forty years later after marrying and raising a beautiful family her dream became a reality. In October 2004 she joined a group of fourteen people from the Riverview Church in Perth, and went on a life-changing Awareness Trip to Cambodia for ten days. This trip deeply impacted her and she returned home with a burning desire to raise funds and return to teach sewing to underprivileged women and young girls who would otherwise most likely be lured into trafficking and sweat shop situations.

Kay was aware that country people don't have the same access to opportunities that exist in the city, so she established projects in small rural communities.

Since Kay's first trip to Cambodia, she has returned more than 30 times, working tirelessly to help Cambodian mums and dads, boys and girls to gain a better way of life.

Stitches of Hope provide care for the poor, the abandoned and the marginalised with homes, education and skills development, thus giving them hope and empowering them to realise their potential. In procuring sewing orders they provide employment for up to 30 people. They have even established a project making sleeping bags for the homeless in Perth.

Kay’s talk was very interesting and she is to be congratulated on the inspiring work she and her team do.

Winners The winner of the Door Prize was Martin, who also won Raffle but not the Joker. He was very happy to take home two bottles of wine.

Colin entertained the meeting with many delightful Happy Dollars and a few fines.

District Conference The District Conference weekend is coming up starting on Friday 20 March. I believe we have about thirteen people coming, which will be really great sharing this experience. Some people are staying in Rockingham and others are coming home each night. We look forward to hearing inspirational speakers and the opportunity to enjoy amazing fellowship with like-minded people Just a reminder that the dress theme for the Saturday evening dinner is Beach Party. The set up and pack up Rotarians shall:

• Arrive at least 30 mins before the meeting starting time

• Retrieve the small Australian flags, the Sergeant's gavel and gong, collection box, donations tin, Joker container and two bottles of wine.

• The small flags shall be spread around the tables.

• The Sergeant's and President's items are to be placed on the President's table

• The microphones provided by Tompkins on Swan shall be turned on and tested

• At the completion of the meeting, all items shall be returned to the storeroom cupboard

The hosts shall:

• Arrive at least 30 minutes before meeting starting time

• Retrieve the wooden badge holder cabinet from the storeroom and place it within greeting area

• Greet all Rotarians with a handshake and give them their badge.

• Greet guests and welcome them and introduce them to at least two Rotarians

• Greet the guest speaker if the Chairperson is unavailable

• After the meeting, retrieve all name badges, place them in the wooden cabinet and return to storeroom

The chairperson shall:

• Read the Bulletin in advance and then contact Program Director for CV of speaker

• Arrive at Dinner Meeting venue at least 35 mins before starting time

• Greet and welcome the GS at the entrance and introduce them to the President and at least four Rotarians

• Assist the GS to setup his/her audio/visual and any other aids

• Show GS where to sit down for dinner on President's table and where to speak

• Invite the GS to stay for tea or coffee afterwards and ask them if they are happy to answer questions then

• Advise GS to speak for 20-30 minutes (or as agreed with Programme Director) including questions

• Introduce the GS by name and topic when requested by the President

• Formally introduce the GS by written CV addressing name, vocation, qualifications, family (if appropriate), interests and lastly topic. This should take from one to two minutes only.

• Chair the speaker session allowing one question per Rotarian or Guest

• Terminate the session with the presentation of the gift coaster (from Secretary)

• Escort the GS to the door after the meeting (and to their vehicle if appropriate)
