Please tell every dog or cat owner you know.
Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.
Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special
message along to all of my dog loving friends and family.
Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Tar-
get to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away
from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and dev
oured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new
but wasn't acting lethargic in any way.
The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the
walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the
company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured
by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat
Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog).
However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'
This Snopes site gives the following information:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp
<http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp>
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply
stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like
chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already oc-
curred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and
be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Co-
coa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar
in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made
from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the
stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of
theobromine.

Zuchtwart Report Vereinigter CanAm Deutsch Kurzhaar Klub
November 2008
I send greetings to all and offer wishes that you are enjoying the hunting season. I hope you have success in
training, testing and now most importantly hunting over your DK’s.
I have had the pleasure to attend many tests across North America this past year and it was my honor to meet
many of you and your DK’s. I have seen many fine specimens of our breed. All of you are to be congratulated on your
dedication, sacrifice and training preparation whether you achieved your desired test result or not. Test day many times
does not go as we plan, or expect. Remember you put forth your best effort and this is all you can do.
If things don’t work out as expected, one still has one well prepared DK for hunting and is still your treasured compan-
ion.
In the past year I am proud to announce two litters produced by our member’s kennels.
In January breeder Shane Cook kennel Feuersteinfluss of Meridianville, AL; Feuersteinfluss produced a large litter of 10
pups. 6 males, 4 females. The parents were father: Brock vom Speidel 1364/05 and mother: Freya vom Schnepfenstrich
866/04.When I last heard these pups were doing well, and we look forward to seeing them in the coming testing sea-
son.
Next up in May I am happy to announce the first litter for kennel Salt Creek breeder Karre Leishman of Perry,
Utah. This litter Vanita and I had a personal touch as our male dog Wilson von Innviertel OHZB DK 20212 is the father
and the mother is Karre’s Flocke vom Kronsberg 200/05 aka ―Tillie‖ Tillie was momma to 6 pups 3 males, 3 females.
From last reports from Karre these pups are doing very well and there are evidently some Wilson clones. Good luck to
the breeders and especially all of the new owners/handlers!
I would like to remind all members that any breeding questions and/or concerns should be directed to my of-
fice. I will do my best to answer all of your questions in a timely manner. I am here to assist you and offer any advice
that is needed in breeding with your DK.
Please check with me prior to submitting request for applicable forms and current costs.
The Euro dictates VCDKK’s current fees, and it is always possible for fees to change.
With best wishes for a safe hunting season!
waidmannsheil und Kurzhaar voran,
Tom Skinner, Zuchtwart VCDKK

Special note:
We would like to mention that VCDKK autumn test host and long time JGHV Verbands-
richter Alan Davis took ill right after hosting our October Solms/HZP/AZP Zuchtschau at his
home in Yarker, ON Canada.
From speaking recently with Al, he is now home and we hope on the road to full recovery.
Al and his wife Kim put forth a marvelous effort in hosting the test festivities.
The hospitality, food preparation and grounds provided to VCDKK were absolutely wonderful.
We cannot thank them enough for the wonderful time we all experienced at their home.
We ask that you all remember Al, Kim and their family in your thoughts and prayers.
We wish you a speedy recovery AL and all the best wishes!
God bless.
On behalf of VCDKK

This is a very short story and picture of Hella vom Salzberg that was recently taken; feel welcome to add this to the next newslet-
ter if there is a vacant spot. Like what is common with most old dogs, age has had its way with my good old friend Hella vom
Salzberg. However, that doesn’t mean the desire to get the prey and have a good romp doesn’t still rule the day. After a rainy
weekend, I heard this loud wallowing sound coming from the vegetated waterway nearest our country home. A simple toot of the
whistle brought Hella home. I don’t know what she was after, but Hella was literally covered with mud from head to tail. After a
thorough bath, she was ready to resume her role as an outstanding companion. Or Perhaps just the picture with a title, ―Hella vom
Salzberg at work‖ would be sufficient and self explaining.
Thanks and prost,
Steve (Waters)
Hi Vanita,
I Wanted to relate my experiences to you as it relates to the SOLMS test at Yarker last month.
First of all, I would be remiss not to acknowledge Kim and Al Davis for the gracious hospitality. I really enjoyed sharing some of my Italian food and culture with them and everyone else. They are some of the warmest people I have ever met. I hope all is well with them.
For someone new to the club, I was sure made to feel welcome! I thank everyone for that. I hope as time passes, I can re-turn the favor. I look forward to it.
I found the whole weekend to be informative as well as enjoyable. Certainly highlights is what is required, in high relief.
I look forward to the next event.
Wishing the members all the best.
Warmest regards,
