PASTORAL LETTER

A letter to the people of the Archdiocese of Adelaide My sisters and brothers As you are aware, on Tuesday I was found guilty of an offence in the Newcastle Local Court. As a result, I have found it necessary to stand aside from my duties as Archbishop. I am in the process of putting in place the necessary administrative arrangements to ensure that the affairs of the Archdiocese are managed responsibly. I will stand aside as of Friday. I know that we are a united community of believers, a people of hope, and we will continue to be the disciples of Jesus in the world today. We have achieved great things in all facets of the life of the Archdiocese, including in our parishes, schools, social services, health and in aged care. I want to assure you that all of these essential pastoral aspects of the life of the Archdiocese will not be affected by my standing aside. While the legal process runs its course, I want to assure the Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese of my continued prayers and best wishes and assure everyone that the affairs of the Archdiocese will be appropriately managed in my absence. Please continue to pray for me. Yours sincerely,

Most Rev Philip Wilson DD JCL Archbishop of Adelaide

a parish Trinity SundayThis Sunday, we continue the collection of Feast Days and Solemnities with Trinity Sunday. The readings selected for Trinity Sunday provide an opportunity to reflect on the nature of God. Over recent weeks, we have celebrated the Ascension and Pentecost – both of which reveal something about the nature of God through Jesus and the Spirit.

This Sunday’s gospel reminds us that there is a seamless continuity between the different experiences of God:

Jesus said to Nicodemus, ‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved. No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already, because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son.’ (John 3:16-18)

Although we sometimes regard the God of the Old Testament as judging and vengeful, Trinity Sunday reminds us that God is, was, and always will be a God of love. The gospel reminds us that ‘God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son.’ Love is the characteristic of God that is experienced as Father, Son and Spirit. God loved the world into being and loved the people so much that God made a covenant relationship with them and repeatedly drew them back into that

relationship when they strayed. God loved the world and the people so much that God became physically present through Jesus as yet another attempt to draw all people into an awareness of the loving relationship God desired for them. When Jesus could no longer remain a physical presence in the world, God’s Spirit became more evident to continue the work of drawing people into that loving

relationship with God.

Rather than focusing on the mystery of the Trinitarian God, this Sunday is an opportunity to marvel at the single-mindedness of God who is so determined to reveal the length and breadth of God’s love to us. That revelation has been made manifest in different ways throughout time but remains constant and unchanging.

The Sign of the CrossEvery time we bless ourselves or begin prayer with the sign of the cross, we reaffirm our belief in the Trinity. That seemingly simple prayer, ‘In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,’ is, in fact, a confirmation of our belief in a triune God – three in one. The

earliest use of the sign of the cross only involved tracing a small cross with the thumb or finger on the forehead as it is still done in baptisms or blessings today. Later, describing the shape of the cross on forehead, abdomen and shoulders became the common practice.

Every year, the College supports the work of the local Gawler Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society through our annual “Vinnie’s Winter Appeal”, which runs in conjunction with the society’s national appeal (for further information: https://winterappeal.vinnies.org.au/?ref=redirect).

Over the next three weeks (May 28th – June 15th), we are asking that every member of the College community seriously consider donating cans of quality tinned food to help the local conference meet the increasing needs they are faced with at this time of year. The tinned goods will be used to make up food hampers as well as supporting ‘Fred’s Van’ in the northern suburbs.

The following thoughts were put to the community at yesterday’s assembly: “At the heart of this appeal should always be our response to Jesus’ call to “love one another as I have loved you”. Through our acts of genuine generosity, we show our love for others and Jesus. Jesus’s love was never half-measured – it was full and rich and so must our response to the winter appeal be. We should never be prepared to give to others what we would not want to receive.

During the 3 days of NAPLAN testing, a group of students that were exempt undertook an enterprise task and excursion which proved to be a valuable learning experience.

Students researched and designed 3 different decorative toppings to go on biscuits. The task required the students to draw and label 3 diagrams and then list all of the ingredients required. Following this, they used Coles Online to discover the prices of their items, added them up and made a shopping list. Additionally, they calculated how much they would need to sell the biscuits for to make a profit.

Students attended the local Coles shopping centre and shopped for their items. They were encouraged to use the self-serve check-out at and managed this as a team; Katrina passing the items, Lauren scanning through the

check-out and Zac packing the bags. Katrina also paid via the Eftpos machine.

On Thursday the students used the pictures they had drawn and the ingredients purchased to then create their masterpieces. Towards the end of the lesson, Zac had not completed his last biscuits, so again the 3 worked as a team to complete them. They were placed in the fridge to set and then handed out to peers in P7/8 on Thursday 17th of May or distributed at swimming carnival. The Enterprise task was a great success and will likely be repeated in the future.

The quality of our donations should reflect this. Our thoughts shouldn’t be – any old can will do, doesn’t matter if it is out of date just as long as we have massive numbers of cans. Our donations should reflect a genuine love and concern for others and it should be of quality and substance. During the appeal, our challenge for you is to think before you donate – ask yourself the questions: ‘Would I be thankful if someone gave me this?’ or ‘Is my love for others truly reflected by this donation?’ It’s a big challenge, but one we are sure you are all able of accepting and carrying out.

This year St. Vinnies are specifically looking for the following donations:• Soups: all varieties • Fruit: peaches, two fruits, fruit salad, pineapple,

apricots etc…• BakedBeansandSpaghetti• Canned Meals: braised steak and onions, vegetables

and steak etc... as well as Tuna• Vegetables – carrots, green peas and beans, mixed

vegetables and corn

• Pasta Sauce and Tomatoes • and Canned Meats – Chicken, Corned Beef etc...

The local Vinnie’s conference have asked that only cans of food be donated (no other form of non-perishable food, as this causes problems for them with storage).

Next Wednesday we will be holding Winter Woollies Wednesday. Students will be able to wear any coloured beanies, scarfs and gloves to school in exchange for a gold coin donation. Monies raised will then be used to purchase more cans of food towards the appeal.

We thank you in advance for your continued support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society through our annual appeal.

On Wednesday 9th May I had the pleasure of attending the Gawler Zonta Women of Achievement and Young Women of Achievement Awards and AGM Dinner Gawler. It was lovely evening and it was lovely to see past and present Xavier students receive awards during the evening.

Jessica Maiolo received the Young Visionary Leader Award. This was in recognition for her personal commitment to overcoming challenges. She is modest and dedicated to helping others through her involvement in the Don Bosco Youth Group. She is compassionate and caring and wants to help other young people which is why is currently studying her Certificate IV in Adaptive Education. Jess has overcome many obstacles to work towards her goals so we congratulate her on receiving the recognition she deserves.

Tyanne Kemp received the Young Community Worker or Volunteer Award in recognition of her commitment to helping others, not seeking the limelight and quietly getting things done.

Tyanne is very supportive and encouraging at our weekly Nunga Clubs, she offers quiet advice to her peers and younger students.

Tyanne volunteered to be part of a bush leadership program for Yellakka Yellarkarri (Today Tomorrow). She then went on to speak confidently in front of 70 people at the annual CESA Yellakka Yellarkarri Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander retreat. Tyanne has attended the Schools Reconciliation Congress and has made meaningful contributions to the Xavier Action Group. This was seen when they spoke to assembly about the negative and far reaching impact of racism.

Tyanne is really caring and encourages and uplifts other students in her House and Oratory - she does this in many ways, reading drafts and offering feedback, sharing positive affirmations and encouraging other students to attend school. It has been a pleasure to watch Tyanne grow into a mature young lady and we know that she will continue to be successful in the future.

Isaac Willis, Year 8 Occhiena student, and his family were invited to Blangy-Tronville, France to attend the renaming of Arthur Clifford Stribling Elementary School. The Willis Family were invited because Isaac’s paternal great-uncle, three generations back, was a soldier during WWI and this site is of significance to the family and to the war efforts made by ANZACs during that time.

Isaac says that this experience was really good, and he enjoyed French culture and learning more about the war efforts at that time, “The best part of my trip was when we went to The Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, because we went up the tower and got to see this amazing view of everything. That was probably my favourite part. I loved it!”

Isaac was really appreciative of the opportunity to travel overseas and be a part of the remembrance of WW1 war efforts and says, “definitely get to France if you can!”.

On the 23rd of May 2018, a number of students in Years 10-12 were selected to attend the Positive Futures Expo at the Playford Civic Centre in Elizabeth. This excursion incorporated not only the expo, but the use of public transport, and also money handling skills. Students used both bus and train services to reach the Playford Civic Centre and return to Xavier College, along with independently purchasing their own tickets on the public transport. Additionally, students purchased food and drinks from the café under the supervision of Xavier staff. The expo provided students with valuable information about NDIS funding, access to it after school and the School Leaver Employment Service (SLES) program.

After listening to a speaker, students enjoyed a relaxed lunch in the café and then attended the employment stalls in the main hall. The room was bustling with many attendees. It was a pleasure to see our Xavier students cheerfully engaging with stall holders to discover new information about their potential futures, as well as obtain some very important trinkets to bring home (lollies, pens, stress balls, torch key rings etc.). Students discovered that there are many outside

The Yamaha Keyboard Festival took place on Sunday 20th May at St Brigid’s Catholic School. This fabulous event gave students from northern schools an opportunity to perform in front of parents, peers and the local community. In addition to students of piano, this event was open to performers of all ages as well as school bands, pop/rock ensembles, vocal groups, choirs, and individual performers. The only criteria was that all acts must feature the beautiful Yamaha digital grand piano. The guest performers were outstanding and incredibly inspiring. Darcy Marker, Chelsea Mifsud and Amy Roberts all performed and proudly represented the College. It was an enjoyable afternoon highlighting some emerging talent!

Ms Leanne Savill, Director of Music

Student reflectionThe Yamaha Keyboard Festival event was held on Sunday 20th May at St Brigid’s Catholic School. Three Xavier College students participated, alongside 30 performers on the day. The performances included a piano solo by Darcy Marker, who introduced the event with Toccata Brillante, and later performed Piano man by Billy Joel. Chelsea Mifsud and I presented a duo performance: Titanium by David Guetta. All participants highly enjoyed the afternoon performing.

The crowd, which consisted of around 150-200 people, highly enjoyed the entertainment, and noticed the pride each performer put into their piece. The festival was open to all ages, so there was a balanced mixture of intermediate and beginning pianists. The afternoon concluded with a stunning guest performance by Jessica Bigg and David McEvoy. The original piece held true emotion and passion, and was inspiring for all musician’s present.

Overall, it was a very successful day, and all performers from Xavier College left proud to have been a part of such a special, musical event.

From May 15th – 18th a group of students attended the Yellakka Yellarkarri. Yellakka Yellarkarri means Today Tomorrow in Kaurna Language. At YY students learnt their Kaurna birth order names. Language is the key to culture. Students enjoyed learning and singing Kaurna songs. Each day students and teachers gathered around a ceremonial fire. Eucalyptus branches were to brush away the old footsteps that were in the sand, to make way our new footsteps and journeys. The students painted story poles that will go in the Indigenous Garden at the Catholic Education office.

At YY there were around 60 students from 13 Catholic Schools and the focus was on the importance of culture and standing up for their culture. Students worked together to paint banners that expressed their desire to be listened to.

Facilitators included; Pastor Ray Minniecon who told of his journey around Australia meeting lots of people and his passion for Aboriginal Right, and Katrina Powers who shared her passion for reporting and speaking truth to power. The Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement worked with students to write a Yellakka Yellarkarri

statement which is a document that declares the hopes and dreams of the students. The last day of the week ended with ceremony during which students presented their Yellakka Yellarkarri statement to Frances Bedford, Independent member for Florey, who agreed to read the statement working together to create equality and read it in parliament.

The Yellakka Yellarkarri is often the highlight of the year for our Indigenous students. I would like to thank Catholic Education of South Australia and Xavier College for supporting students to attend this significant cultural event.

Class ClownsDuring the duration of this semester, the Year 10 Drama students were involved in performing the hilarious and slapstick comedy production of ‘Class Clowns.’

The whole unit of Clowning was conducted over the course of 7 weeks and students were required to produce a 20 minute clowning performance of their own design encompassing the history of different types of clowns, individual costuming and make-up, a storyline/plot, sound and lighting effects.

Three group performances were composed for performance night, which comprised, a mysterious ‘Scooby-Doo’ themed performance, a ‘Big Brother’ inspired sitcom, and a beauty pageant inspired performance with an unexpected twist.

As performance night slowly loomed and stresses ran high, students worked hard to memorise their lines and cues, and with the help of intense technical and dress rehearsals, they eventually were able to put their clowning faces on and perform their comical pieces in front of a sell-out audience at the Bosco Centre.

The night was an absolute success and all the performing groups attained many laughs and positive reactions from the audience. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and were thankful to their group members and the guidance and support from their drama teacher, Mr. Mohanaraj for a wonderful semester.

Xavier College Swimming Carnivala playground

On Friday May 18th, the annual Xavier College Swimming Carnival was held at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, North Adelaide. Students thoroughly enjoyed the warm water and being inside out of the rain! Even the late arrival of one bus and the rainy day did not dampen the spirits with students participating well across all four Houses.

The competition events were hotly contested. Our strong swimmers excelled in the water and it was great to see some of our not-so-experienced students get out of their comfort zone and have a go at the 25m events.

The novelty events in the shallow end saw the return of some old favourites including the T-shirt Relay, the Treasure Hunt and the organised chaos of the Poison Pool Toss. The new “Inflatable Relay” saw some very strange techniques but lots of fun and laughter too! The excitement, cooperation and competitiveness from each and every student was incredible to watch and ensured fun was had by all.

Congratulations to all students in attendance from all Houses who competed with high spirits and enthusiasm. Thank you to all staff who were involved in the organisation, running and general support of this event.
