Fun and Games Problem Solving and Team Work

Friday afternoon the patrols demonstrated their problem solving skills through a series of activities. You will find some photos of the fun filled activities on pages 2 –3. Hopefully you enjoyed the events while getting to practice the skills you

have been learning. From my observations, I saw a lot of good teamwork happening with everyone’s ideas being considered and tried. I would like to commend those that voluntarily ‘lost their

The Axe and Log

The Axe and Log symbol originated when Francis Gidney, the first Camp Chief of Gilwell wanted a special “logo” to denote Gilwell Park as opposed to Scout Headquarters. Gilwell Park has always been the property of Scout Headquarters. Gidney wanted to be sure that, although the Park was a part of Headquarters, it was quite different and much more associated with the outdoors and woodcraft side of Scouting rather than the “business” side. He, therefore adopted the symbol for use on all leader training publications and letterheads.

Gidney’s Leader courses always featured a great deal of practical activity and axes were as prominent as “billy cans.” Great emphasis was placed on safety with tools and axes were always expected to be “masked” by burying the blade in a log of wood. Hence there were examples of axes properly masked all over the Training Camp and they clearly struck Gidney as an ideal symbol to denote all that the training courses stood for!

Gidney was the first Camp Chief of Gilwell during the first Wood Badge course in 1919. He was known for his axe throwing exhibitions and training course in axemanship. Chief Gidney also invented the Gilwell scarf with the MacLaren Tartan.

Get Well Soon!

Scoutmaster Kim Barker took ill today and has been missed all day. The staff and participants wish Kim a speedy recovery and look forward to her return.

Our method of training is to educate from within rather then to instruct from without; to offer games and activities which, while being attractive to the boy, will seriously educate him morally, mentally, and physically.

- Baden-Powell

A certain Scout leader ordered a large pizza, The cook pulled the pizza out of the oven asked this leader, “Do you want me to cut it into 6 or 8 pieces?” “Better make it 6,” the leader responded, “I could never eat 8 pieces.”

Bobwhite Patrol We are proud to say the Bobwhites were the 1st ones all here this morning and got our Patrol pictures 1st. All completed the hike without giving up our backpacks and are enjoying being out in the woods, our natural habitat.

Eagle Patrol What a great campout – good food and good company. Lunch – wow – chicken and rice and our quests were Karen Hook and Roger Boyer. Dinner was just awesome steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and biscuits with cream gravy. Our guests were Dona Hokanson and Andy Tirpak. There were seconds all around and great conversation around the fire. Problem solving was really a great exercise; the Eagles aced them all.

The Five Fine Foxes began the day with folley of photos in fine fashion. Following the photos Five Fine Foxes forked over the non-ferrous fire finishing – fling – fling. At first our high flying feathered friends were not fazul . . . false . . .clearly they were fatigue by the fine finishings within four or five steps. The flag festival finished the Five Fine Foxes were following each other with fat packs. Starting off our trek with a fun filled factorium demonstrating car camping by the old Car Camping expert Patrol Leader Clyde Holt. Followed on by a Leave No Trace fun filled frolicking fine time. As the day continued our frailified minds were filled faultless with fabulously fantastic leadership knowledge. At our fine and fully prepared lunch we were visited by three Fraternal Foxes – Dave Wiegand, Andy Tirpak and Jimmy Geesing who filled us with fun filled flashbacks of Fox Dens from past years. Our fantastically fine day finished with a feast with Roger Boyer, Lisa “Boots” Stegman and Karen Hook who left with these fabulous farewell words “Thank you Five Fine Foxes For the Fabulous Fine Festive Feast!”

Give the man a toy, and he’s happy for a day. Slop Your Dripper.

PATROL NEWS Owl Patrol The Owls swooped into weekend two ready to howl. The Owls thought the hike was a hoot and enjoyed the fellowship along the way. We really enjoyed hooting it up with our exuberant troop guide leading the song. We hopped, surfed, worked together and flew through our patrol activities. WE CANT WAIT FOR DAY 5!

Editors Note: Upon further research after publication of yesterday’s Gazette, I have a correction to the Trivia Question.

There have been different sizes of the statue. The series I was referring to was the life size series of which there seems to be some additional confusion on. Initial research indicated that the original is sitting outside the

Cradle of Liberty and there were two copies. One at Gilwell Park and the other in front of the BSA National Office in Irving, TX. Then another article I read says that there have since 10 or more copies made and they are in front of a number of council offices.

A young boy was asked what he thought about change. He responded that he didn’t know enough about it to say much, but he liked things just the way they were. How much change he would experience in his life was still a mystery to him. All the excitement, challenge, and oppor-tunity that change provides is one of the benefits of a full life. Without change, we would have none of the high-tech equipment and materials that have improved overnight camping experiences. Think of the material used in your tents, stoves, and packs. Think of the innovation that went into the original compasses and now the GPS instru-ments. Change, when viewed as an opportunity, opens all sorts of new possibilities for us. Ask yourselves, how are you viewing change?

How many boots, could a Bobwhite wear, if a Bobwhite could wear boots?

Submit your answer (in writing) to Boots with name and guess… One guess per participant by Sunday breakfast.

1. Which U.S. President favorite sport was fox hunting?

2. How many degrees can a great horned owl turn it’s head?

3. How much body fat does a bear in hibernation loose?
