I find it hard to believe it’s 2017 already,

and this will be my last report to you as your

President. We had a fairly good end to the

year which continued into the new year, but

as I sit to write this report we are seeing the

first few flurries of snow. Hopefully, fairly

soon, and leading up to the conference in

May, instead of winter we will see some

more spring like weather to enable us to

get the spring work up to date without too

much stress.

Finally, at long last, the dairy industry seems to be on the upwards surge. Although

the spot market seems to have dropped slightly which is maybe due to the influx

of heifers bought in from Europe at a knock down price. One of the most pleasing

aspects in my year as President is having sold heifers and cows to start the

foundation of the ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Riverlee’ Ayrshire herds in Wales and Preston

respectively, and I wish them both every success for the future.

Caroline and I had the pleasure of joining the Ulster and Cornwall clubs for their

presentation dinners, and it was pleasing to see a high number of members turning

out, especially from our younger generation. On the trip down to Cornwall we

were very surprised to see as many badgers lying at the side of the road, and we

sympathise with those herds effected by TB, as it’s such a terrible disease.

At the beginning of December I attended the Ulster Winter Fair with my ‘drinking

buddies’, and it was great to see John Hunter winning with a superb cow and

having achieved all the top honours. We finished off a great day by sharing some

excellent hospitality with John later on in the evening.

I am especially looking forward to rounding off my year with another trip to Ireland,

this time for the young breeder’s weekend. I am very much aware that they are the

future of our ever growing Ayrshire breed, and we need to continue to encourage

their involvement at all times.

I would like to thank all the staff in the office for all their superb help and continued

hard work during my year as President. A special thanks must go to Claire for

organising all my flights and travel arrangements and to Duncan who see’s nothing

as a problem and always has an answer to my many queries. Finally I must thank all

the staff at home for holding down the fort while I have been away.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone coming along and joining us in

Ayrshire, the home of the Ayrshire cow for the conference in May.

The Ayrshire Journal 4

Chris was born in 1938 in Wardend, Birmingham, an only and much loved child of Chris and Nellie Window. Chris was never a fan of schooling, but he loved his sport for which he excelled at and was captain of many teams including football, rugby and the swimming team.

Much of his time as a child was spent at his Uncle Frank’s small holding farm where he found his love for farming. Once Chris left school, he wanted to follow his heart to study agriculture. He went to college at Moreton Hall where he spent much time in the dairy unit and where his interest and love of dairying all began. During his time at college, he continued with his sports, following in his father’s footsteps with boxing, another sport he was also very good at. But it was his passion with swimming for his club and for the county that he met the love of his life in 1957, a fifteen-year-old swimmer called Hazel. Training and competing together bought them closer together which is where their relationship blossomed. Chris and Hazel were married in 1963 and were blessed with two daughters, Karen and Lisa.

An opportunity arose for an assistant herdsman at “Southfields” to work with Lord Henry Plumb. and it wasn’t long before Chris took over as head herdsman and had a very close working relationship with Henry which built into a great friendship. Chris was given more and more responsibility at Southfields due to Henry’s involvement in the NFU. Taking over the breeding, showing cows and full management gave Chris the hunger to have his own farm one day.

In 1973 an opportunity arose to take on a tenancy at Horsepool Farm, a very basic property with a lot of work needed. Owning no stock and no equipment did not deter Chris from perusing his dream, and work soon started at Horsepool. Machines were brought in to dig through the sand stone with little success. So, Chris, single handed armed with a pickaxe and an iron bar did it all by hand.

Chris purchased some in calf cows from Henry Plumb, namely the “Sailor Girls” and “Fragy”, and then the “Joybells” from Jack Skellan to get started. Little would he have known at that point what these families would develop into! In the mid 80s the opportunity to purchase Horsepool Farm came up and Chris went for it. Being a successful businessman through and through, he developed his own milk retail business which continued to grow over many years to what it is now.

It was breeding cows and the love of the showring which drove Chris on to be that successful breeder we all knew and loved. Developing further the families he bought in, to the point where Chris wanted to start showing. The first show was Bromsgrove, the only Ayrshire breeder there showing against other breeds and not doing as well as he thought. This made Chris ever more determined to do better and he always maintained you could learn a lot from defeat. A great lesson in life and that determination to succeed soon came. With so much support from Hazel, Karen and Lisa, they soon started competing and winning at National level.

Chris loved showing cows, meeting the other competitors and enjoying that time as if it were a holiday. Huge success came along in the early 90s with one of his most famous cows Hunnington Sailor Girl 29 EX.

ObituaryChris Window - 1938 - 2017

Chris loved the milking trials during the old days at the Dairy Event and his success here with Sailor Girl 29 was one of his proudest moments.Judging cows both at home and abroad was something Chris loved to do, and he was good at it! There was nowhere he hadn’t judged here in the UK, always consistent and very professional which is why he judged overseas and was so respected wherever he went.

Chris would always attend the annual Ayrshire conference and had attended many World conferences around the globe where he and Hazel met so many people and formed friendships wherever they went. A past President, council member and only last year Chris was awarded with a lifetime achievement award from the Ayrshire Cattle Society.

Chris was always so proud of the influence his breeding had for other Ayrshire breeders both at home and abroad. Many herds through the UK have family members from the Hunnington herd as well as influence from Hunnington sires. The distribution of sires from Hunnington, including Admiral and Mandella has worldwide appeal which has benefited Ayrshire breeders across the globe.

Family life was everything to Chris. Blessed with a wonderful wife, Hazel, two fantastic daughters, Karen and Lisa, and two wonderful grandchildren, Chris and Catherine who all meant so much to Chris and he was immensely proud of all of them and their achievements.

His own achievements to the outsider are nothing but miraculous. A first-generation farmer to make such a huge impact in the local community, nationally and Internationally are remarkable.

Obituary - Adam Wilson Montgomerie

Obituary - Ray Burt

Claire’s NewsIt was with great sadness that the farming and wider community learnt of the death of Adam Wilson Montgomerie on 20th January 2017. Born in 1943, Adam attended the local school before working at home with his father Wallace and twin brother Logan on the family farm at Lessnessock, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. He was a keen young farmer and served as Chairman of Ayr Young Farmer’s Club and then Chairman of the South West Area. Adam and his brother Logan won the Junior Stockjudging Pairs competition at Glasgow Dairy Show, and he represented Scotland as part of the International Stockjudging team at the Royal Show.

For many years Lessnessock held their Annual Sale of Ayrshire Cattle on farm, during the Ayrshire Sales week in November, when buyers came from all over the world to view and purchase the cattle on offer. During a trip to Canada in 1967, Adam purchased Doonholm Mr Centennial and this bull proved himself by producing excellent progeny.

A memorable occasion for Adam was when Lessnessock Bell Lawson was Reserve Champion at The Royal Show. He was also delighted when two daughters, sired by Lessnessock Will Cheer, won a new class for inspection and production, which had been introduced at the Highland.

A well-known figure at both local and national shows, Adam was frequently asked to judge Ayrshire cows throughout the United Kingdom - The Royal Highland Show, The Royal Show, Norfolk and Cornwall to name but a few. He loved attending shows and meeting other farmers and Ayrshire breeders.

Adam was an Honorary President of Ochiltree Farmers’ Society, where his knowledge and wit were appreciated by his friends and contemporaries. Ochiltree Show held a special place in his heart and he was the first person to attain “The Double” by winning both the dairy sections in the same year. He had also served as a Director of the Ayrshire Agricultural Association and supported Ayr County Show for many years.

In business, Adam was a very forward looking farmer and oversaw the modernisation of the buildings at Lessnessock, which included a 20/40 milking parlour. He was honest and honourable in his business dealings, and in his personal life, he was sociable and always interested in listening to what other people were doing. Outside of farming, he loved football, golf and bowling. Travel was also very important to Adam after his retirement when he was able to explore more of the world.

Adam’s life revolved around his family as well as farming. He is survived by his beloved wife Joanna and their two sons Adam and David, who are carrying on the farming tradition at Lessnessock, and their daughter Ailie who is a lawyer. He was also blessed with five grandchildren. Adam will be greatly missed by many people but especially by his family.

It has been a busy start to the year with various meetings and the annual accounts for both the Society and Cattle Services to prepare for. Work has also started on World Federation tasks and I look forward to providing the executive committee with the administration support they require.

Council met on 1st and 2nd March with 27 members in attendance.

As at 22nd February the membership is as follows:-Total - 912 - Adult - 654, Junior – 258

Please ensure that when DNA samples are requested by the office they are submitted at the earliest opportunity, and completed appropriately so that we can get the testing completed and release your animals from suspense as soon as possible. Normal turn-around from the laboratory is 2-3 weeks, but can take longer during busy periods.

For members on the CIS Complete programme, we have been noticing animals are being registered that are over three months and this facility is intended for animals under three months. The Society will charge members £5 per overage animal between 4-18 months, and for an animal over 18 months the usual charge of £24 will apply.

The organisation for this year’s events is starting to get busy and we were fortunate to be successful in applying for a donation of £2,500 from the Queen’s Patron fund towards the training and development of our Young Breeders. We have a high number of people booked into this year’s weekend in Northern Ireland with a full programme of events for those attending. We would like to congratulate Matthew McLean for representing the Society so well on his recent trip to New Zealand, with the President’s receiving an email informing them of what a credit to the Society and his family Matthew is.

The 2016 conference has reported surplus funds and the Derbyshire club have decided to donate £1,448.25 to Cancer Research and £584.12 back to the Society to be deposited in the Frank Renshaw Investment fund. This year’s conference is coming together and promises to be a great event, if you haven’t yet booked in as either a day delegate or full delegate then please give me a call at the office.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to give myself, Lesley or Elaine a call and we will be happy to help.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ray Burt on 27th December 2016 aged 89 years. Ray had been a active member of the Cheshire Club for 40 y ears, and latterly became their President.

After leaving Reaseheath College, he went to work for W H Slater’s Eyton herd. He left there to start his Leventhorpe herd, with his wife Eileen, on the outskirts of Bradford, and later purchased a farm at Kelbrook near Skipton. It was his ambition to return to Cheshire which he did in 1977, buying Gradeley Green Farm near Nantwich.

He was successful at local shows and herd competitions and was placed several times in the Bank of Scotland Costings competition. The herd was dispersed in 1998, and in his retirement he formed the Leventhorpe herd of Red Pols which gave him great pleasure. Ray and Eileen are succeeded by Carole and John after sadly losing their daughter Janet to neurofibromatosis. They also have four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ray will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

As the industry slowly pulls itself together, we at the Ayrshire Cattle Society continue to receive numerous enquiries about our breed. A large number of Ayrshires have already been sold to new and existing breeders since the beginning of this year. This has increased further, our already growing Society membership, and we will keep in touch with these new members to encourage the registration of their progeny and promote genetics from Cattle Services.

Breed HeritageFirstly I will provide you with an update on our Breed Heritage programme. I am delighted to report that this is progressing well, and daughters of our matings are continually being added to the watch list. Twenty six young females from our original matings on the current programme are now being looked at by the committee to breed the next generation. Any males born which are instantly of interest are put forward to Cattle Services for consideration. Following on from the Council’s decision to accept an invitation from the UK Dairy Day team, to host the National Ayrshire Show at the 2017 UK Dairy Day, we felt it would be fitting to invite an overseas judge to help promote the show and new venue at home and abroad.

We are delighted to announce Mr Edmund Els from South Africa has accepted our invitation to officiate at the event on Wednesday 13th September 2017.

Edmund Els, is a world renowned and respected Ayrshire breeder, and we look forward to welcoming him to the United Kingdom later this year to officiate at our National Show. Edmund is from the Western Cape of South Africa and is owner of The Ridge Ayrshire herd of 200 pedigree Ayrshires. He is a passionate breeder who has bred and owned several champions through the years, and most recently at the National Show in Bredasdorp he received awards for the National Senior and Reserve senior cow, Reserve Junior animal, Champion heifer and Reserve National Grand Champion.

Edmund was Breed director for the South African Ayrshire Society from 2005 – 2012, and has also served on the Ayrshire board for many years. He is also one of the South African representatives at the World Ayrshire Federation and was part of the committee for hosting the South African Ayrshire World Conference in 2012

Edmund has judged several shows in South Africa, namely Mega (Western Cape Championships), Riversdale, Uniondale, Bloemfontein Show and the Royal Show, and has also judged the De Heus National on Farm Challenge. Internationally Edmund judged the World photo

competition, Australia’s National photo competition and the All-American photo competition. He was also the first non-Northern American judge to officiate as judge at the Southern National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky USA in 2012. Edmund also judged the Livestock Breeders show 2016 in Kenya.

In 2012 he started working for TAG (ST Genetics) and created “Ayr Genetics” which is a local semen company that identifies top Ayrshire genetics in South Africa. Edmund was selected as the President for the Ayrshire Society in 2014 and still serves as President to this day.

Personally, I am delighted that Edmund will be coming to the UK to view for himself the quality animals we have. I met Edmund on the recent World Conference tour in the USA, and I can vouch that he certainly knows his cows and has the same outlook on the breed as we in the UK share. I shall also be organising a small farm tour for Edmund post the show.

At this point, let’s all work together to make this event in September be one to be proud of, and I believe we can all play a part in this. As well as considering showing yourselves, please help us to encourage others. Judges of herd competitions through the summer should keep an eye out for animals worthy of attending. Please contact me if extra encouragements is needed to get these animals along. Also it is worth remembering our Young Breeders will be present to prepare and show animals for you.

Last year the Interbreed Champion at the Livestock event was completely looked after, prepared and shown by members of our Young Breeders. It could be your cow next time!

1. Yield - As nutrient supply increases, yield increases, in a curvilinear relationship and with a law of diminishing returns. The actual curve dependant on the age, size and genetics of the cow.

2. Milk composition – Protein. As you start to feed concentrates, milk, protein % increases, but gradually the response slows to a maximum, then declines just before milk yield declines. The maximum yield of protein occurs just about the same time as maximum milk yield. There is some flex in the system by which you can manipulate the composition which I will talk about shortly.

3. Milk composition – Butterfat. This is different. At the start when you first start to feed some concentrates, one gets a small increase in BF %, but it soon starts to decline, and then rapidly declines at high concentrate feed rates. There is however more nutritional flexibility for manipulation BF % than there is with Protein %.

Hello, my name is Duncan Rose and I am the Technical Manager for Carrs Bilington, and can be seen on dairy farms from anywhere between Wales and Scotland. My first real experience with Ayrshires was on a herd judging competition with John Howarth over 20 years ago, and I was impressed then with the diversity within the breed, their depth of body, good udders, legs and feet and milk composition.

Cutting to the chase, as a nutritionist, I want to know not just the nutrient requirement of a cow, but how she responds to a change in nutrient supply, and with more milk contracts based on composition rather than just yield predicting the change in milk composition as well.

Before looking specifically at Ayrshires, let’s look at how cows in general respond increasing nutrient supply, or if you want to visualise it simply increasing concentrate supplementation.

Ok let’s talk about the Ayrshire.Question for you – what is the average weight of an Ayrshire cow? A simple, but an important question as it affects their feeding from day one on milk replacer, through till calving and in lactation.

I am pluming for 600 Kgs, and an Holstein at 700 Kgs. That 100 Kgs difference will affect potential DMI (Dry matter intake) by three kgs per day, or roughly six litres of milk per day, so at least 1300 litres per lactation.

So how do recorded Ayrshires and Holsteins compare? I have two examples, one from CIS recorded herds and one from an Ayrshire and Holstein herd.

CIS Records firstHolsteins yielded 8995 Kgs at 3.80% Bf and 3.11% Protein compared to Ayrshires at 7297 Kgs at 4.10% BF and 3.32% Protein. In terms of per kg of body weight, Holsteins produced 0.488 Kgs BF and 0.4 Kgs Protein, BUT the Ayrshires produced 0.499 Kgs Bf and 0.404 Kgs Protein per kg bodyweight – if my assumptions of weight are correct!

Just for interest, I wanted to know how Ayrshires would compare under the same management and feeding conditions, so I asked Derek Howarth (son of John Howarth ) who runs a mixed herd of Holsteins and Ayrshires on a robot system near Blackpool, and asked him if he would be happy to let me tell you how his Ayrshires performed compared to his herd’s average.

His average yield is 9203 Kgs at 4.57% Bf and 3.47% Protein with a calving index of 425 days and a SCC of 154. The cows last three lactations on average.

His Ayrshires average 8819 Kgs at 4.32% Bf and 3.46% Protein with a calving index of 388 days, and a SCC 89. The cows last four lactations. He loves his Ayrshires and strongly believes they are hardier, and have a better ability to fight disease and recover, BUT, and this surprised me, he said the breed needs to focus more on selecting for plus fat and protein. His aim is still to retire with a red and white herd.

For this brief talk I must assume that Ayrshire producers are wanting to feed for good fertility perhaps not to maximise white water production, but to achieve high compositional yields, so what are my thoughts. Whatever the yield performance target, forage quality is the key to the achievement of high performance and or lower purchased feed inputs. Grass silage should be 70 D Value silage with a low acid loading. If dry it must be precision chopped – on average I do not like long chop forage wagon silage. It depresses forage DMI. Forge wagons are OK for high D, moister silage.

We must remember cows were designed to eat grass, that has a high sugar content and no lactic acid. The Dutch make the best silage achieving high D, dry high sugar silage, but weather in the UK makes this very difficult and as we try and cut sooner it can end up wet and acidic.

This type of silage, if fed alone, is a nightmare for me to balance – I want to get lots of fermentable carbohydrates in, in the form of starch, but that does not cause acidosis. In these more extreme circumstances I would favour maize grain over wheat, use caustic treated wheat over rolled cereals, use a buffer salt and a yeast and advise the feeding of some hay or chopped straw. If the farm is lucky enough to have two forage crops, then partly replacing the grass silage with dryish 50 % DM whole crop partly helps solve the problem.

So very quickly my thoughts on improving butterfat production1. High intakes of quality silage providing lots of digestible NDF are the best starting point - high D, dryish grass silage does a great job.

2. As yields rise one must provide supplementary carbohydrates and this should be a balance of starch, sugar and digestible fibre – but not too much rapidly fermented carbohydrates. So, at high feed rates one must move from cereals to soya hulls / sugar beet feed.

3. Diets should ideally be 50% DM avoiding wet acidic moist feeds such as Trafford gold if the grass silage is already wet.

4. If needed, reduce the acid loading with live yeast and buffer salts.

5. Fat type in the diet matters as supplementary feed levels rise – feeds that are high in unsaturated fats such as brewers grains, distillers grains and even grazed grass progressively depress BF as more are fed.

6. The most expensive, but sometimes necessary, is the use of high C 16 supplementary fats – typically feeding 250 g increasing BF by 0.25 %.

Now on to my thought on feeding for milk protein.“Energy, energy, energy, energy source, protein quality”.1. Avoid cows losing excess bodyweight – often I see the herd with the best average condition have the highest milk protein %.

2. Ok first thing, feed the cows enough megajoules to meet her needs for the yield and milk composition (Ayrshires have higher milk composition) and bodyweight gain. Meet the needs for GLUCOGENIC energy first by feeding plenty of starch that does not cause acidosis. So, whilst fat eg megalac, has a high- energy content it has a zero-glycogenic energy value. The feed with the highest glycogenic value and lowest acid loading is maize.

3. Since milk protein (casein) is made up of amino acids it should come as no surprise that altering the supply and quality of dietary protein which alters the level of amino acids being delivered to the udder does have an impact on milk protein yield. Grass silage has some protein, but is a very poor source of bypass protein and balance of amino acids.

4. So as yield targets rise, it becomes progressively more important to supplement with more rumen by pass protein such as our AminoMax, and in some cases specific individual rumen protected amino acids such as methionine. These become more important as more distillery products are fed.

Ayrshires may have lower yields than Holsteins, but their output per kg of bodyweight is equal to, if not higher, so nutrient density of the diet is important. The general response to a change in nutrient supply is the same for Ayrshires and Holsteins, BUT the specific nutrient requirement and supply could well be different, and one has to carefully take into account different dry matter intake potential and milk yield and composition targets between these and other breeds.

2017 looks like it’s going to be another successful year for Cattle Services. With the proven sires, we are continuing to perform well, supported by some very interesting young sires that are coming through, so it is an exciting time ahead for us.

Whilst visiting farms over the recent months, I have seen some fantastic fresh heifers by the two Rosehill bulls - Manderville and Vitality, along with daughters of Cuthill Towers Madison, Stamford High Definition and Caldervale Realisation.

Moving forward this year, we have some great sires entering the young sire program. The bulls which will have semen available in May include:

• Ravenhill Victory (Rosehill Vitality x VG88 Celandine First Lord x EX 94 Blackadder Milk Machine) PLI £217, Type Merit 0.75, 281 Milk Production

• Beeline Santa Rock (Kamouraska Rockstar x EX Jelyca Oblique) PLI £208, Type Merit 1.76, 191 Milk Production

• Knowe Norman (Ravenhill Stormin Norman x EX92 West Mossgiel Aramis x EX94 Palmyra Pardner Baltimore) PLI £177, Type Merit 1.2, 647 Milk Production

Later on this year, there is another exciting group of sires due to start collection during Winter 2017 - more details about these to follow.

Genomic testing is in full swing with another batch of samples sent. In April this year, the UK will have its own genomic base which will keep us up-to-date with other the breeds in the world. I must stress that Cattle Services are not just using genomics to select their sires, they are using it as a tool to help them find the best bulls that they can.

Cattle Services still has a wide range of bulls available which include six bulls in sexed straws. We offer free delivery to your farm tank and payment plans to suit your business. If you haven’t already, please like our Facebook page (Cattle Services Ayr Ltd) and visit our website (www.cattleservices.org) for regular offers and information on all of our bulls.

Finland VisitIn late January, Duncan and I went to the National Ayrshire Show in Finland where the aim of the trip was to promote British Genetics. I collected Duncan on my way to Heathrow at 4.40am, and then we had a three hour plane journey to Helsinki, followed by a three hour train ride up through Finland to our destination of Seinajoki.

Whilst we were on the train, the obligatory ticket collector came round. All was fine for the two of us, so we carried on enjoying the scenery. A couple of minutes later, at the end of our coach, a Chinese lady was struggling as she did not have any Euros to pay her fare and her debit card was not working. Luckily for her, up stepped Duncan! He went over to her, spoke his best English, Finish and Chinese, and ended up settling her train fare. In return, the lady thanked Duncan and gave him 100 Yuan and some Norwegian Crone to replace the Euros he had given her. Duncan returned to his seat with his hard earned money, feeling very proud of himself. Throughout the trip, we both wondered how much money Duncan had made; fast track back to England and Duncan went

to the currency exchange. The Norwegian Crone worked out more in commission costs than it was worth, and the 100 yuan was a grand total of about £8.60 - at least Duncan had done his good deed for the day!

Back to the show - we arrived safely with no hiccups. On the first night, we were invited to an Italian for tea with some Finish, Swedish and American breeders. A good night was had by all, primarily talking cows. Friday was show day with the judge being Leif Larsson, and the classes started with the baby calves. All classes were very well supported with the Junior Champion being the winning Junior Calf Hanhisaaren Neiti Napsa (Kamourasko Volvo). Moving on to the milk classes which again saw great quality and depth in each class. The mature cow class was certainly a great spectacle for the breed with the top two cows both having six calves and looking as youthful as some of the cows in the class that had had four. The Grand Champion was Kuusinemen Krisella who was sired by a stock bull that was a son of J Oblique. The Finish breeders certainly know how to put on a show, with music throughout the show, champagne for the winners and commentary throughout which detailed all the entries (although we struggled to understand this).

After the show, they had a sale of stars which had an entry of approximately 20 head and included some young bulls. The average on this sale was around 2000 Euros. Duncan was happy to see a heifer sell carrying a heifer calf by Haresfoot Elegant! Afterwards, we attended the after party in the newly-built football stadium about half a mile away from the show ground. It was another night of good conversation and some useful contacts were made.

On Saturday, it was the showmanship competition judged by Yves Charpentier from Ayrshire Canada. Pinja Kuntsi was the eventual youth handler champion. After this, some members of Ayrshire Finland, alongside some local celebrities did a presentation/ competition where people worked in teams. They had to complete an obstacle course which included milking a cow, riding a child’s tractor and cutting wood! This encouraged a massive audience around the ring and was good fun to watch. Following on from this, the open class was next. This is always a good spectacle and luckily, with attempts by Ayrshire Finland for Duncan and I to enter this class failed! This class is run so that people are asked to leave the ring rather than being lined up. The judge then narrowed it down to four competitors before making Eveliina Kumpula the eventual winner.

The Finish Ayrshire breeders certainly put on a great spectacle and I would recommend the show to anyone if you like a fantastic atmosphere and great cows.

Richard tell us a little bit about yourself and how you ended up as herd manager of Duchy Ayrshires? I am 51 years old, and I have milked cows since I left school at 17. I am married with three children, and as you are all aware, when you work with cows there is not a lot of time left for hobbies. When I left school I went to work for Monty Stallard, Heartly Ayrshires, and this is where I was introduced to Ayrshire cattle. I was involved in milking, show preparation and showing the herd. We also used to have an annual sale of heifers on the farm. I worked there for six years, and I then went self employed contract milking for 20 years.

I saw the job at Duchy advertised in 2009 and thought that it was a good chance to get back into Ayrshires being the only herd in Gloucestershire now.

Why do you love Ayrshire Cattle?Ayrshire cattle are lovely to work with, and they are fairly easy to manage and they live for a long time.

Tell us about the farm?Duchy farm is about 1700 acres with mixed arable, including vegetables, beef, sheep and of course the dairy, and the farm is all organicallyfarmed.

How many cows do you milk and followers?190 cows and 100+ followers.

And what system are these cows on?A mainly grazing system, with grass silage fed in winter.

What is the average yield and calving interval?

Average yield is 6100 litres, calving interval is 390

days, with 3.65% Bf, 3.19% P and 122 SCC.

What are your breeding goals?

Our aim is to breed a cow as true to original type if

possible, which is not too extreme or too big.

Which sires are you currently are using?

Ardmore Crown Napier, Stamford First Quality,

Hilltown Oblique (sexed and conventional), Rosehill

Vitality (sexed and conventional), Whitecroft

Furtado, and Wroughton Lord Winston.

And what is the sire selection criteria -

important traits and areas that you are trying

to improve?

Feet and legs are important as the cows have to

graze, so locomotion is a big factor. We also like

great udders, and the cows also have to be a good

size. To aid our breeding program, we currently put

the cows through a mating program to minimise

in breeding.

What bulls have worked the best in your herd?

Ardmore Crown Napier and Stamford First Quality.

What is your ideal cow?

Our aim is to breed a cow as true to the original type

if possible, and not too extreme or too big.

Why do you use Cattle Services bulls?

We use Cattle Services as they have the widest

range of Ayrshire bulls available, and we know that

all their bulls are tried and tested in UK systems, so

we can believe in the figures that each bull has.

With the conference fast approaching, a change of the officials is on the cards, so in this edition I looked at introducing you to the man stepping up to the Presidency role. A few simple questions have been asked to get to find out about his family, achievements and ambitions... for you to see the serious and not so serious side.

Name - Philip Graham Williams Commonly known as - PhilFamilyWife Sharon and three children Sharalyn, Stephanie and Stuart, along with four grandchildren - Noah, Isaac, Joshua and Nicole.

EducationCamrose North Primary School, Haverfordwest Grammar School for five years followed by USK College. Proudest moment while in education was in 1975 when I was awarded the Welsh Agricultural Student of the Year.

About your farmWe milk 170 pedigree Ayrshires and Holsteins (70 & 100 respectively), along with 200 followers, and the cows are milked twice a day through a 10:20 herringbone parlour. The family own 220 acres and farm an additional 80, and the cows graze through the summer during the day and are buffer fed in these months and are fed on a basic ration through the winter, with silage and a blend (high in cereal and sugar beet) in the winter months. Stocking is high and land is usually all down to a medium grass ley and reseeding is done when appropriate. The farm partnership includes myself, my wife Sharon and son Stuart, in addition to this we have one employed member of staff. Farming decisions are usually decided over breakfast!

Prefix: Willhome Breeding policy: At Willhome we have Holsteins and Ayrshires and we try to make sure each breed is kept separate. For both breeds we think it is easier to manage cows that are willing to milk using our farm resources. When selecting bulls for the Ayrshire we look for the whole package with a little extra type.

What bull has had the greatest influence on your herd?Without question this has to be Cuthill Towers Autumn Gold. They have been upstanding, dairy, capacious herd cows who are willing to milk with ease, but he’s also sired some of our show stars; W. Gold Caroline EX 94 4E (dam of W. Challenger) and W. Gold Moppit EX94 2E. If we look back about seven years, every Ayrshire on the farm was either sired by or were carrying an Autumn Gold calf. Currently LAGACE Ristourn is having a massive impact with his daughters being slow maturing and easy to manage.

Four words that your children would use to describe you and why?Generous – Always good for a hand out, the girls call me the bank of dad!Unpredictable – You never know what mood I am going to wake up in!Sarcastic – Always good for a laugh.Entrepreneur – Always likes to be ahead of the game.

Worst habit - Singing while in the milking parlour...god only knows who’s listening!Least favourite food - Indian (can’t stand the slurry look and texture or aroma)What are you scared of - SnakesFootball or rugby? Used to play both, but now watch them. Match of the day is essential TV viewing.Favourite drink (alcoholic & non alcoholic)? Pear Magners followed by a few whisky and lemonades. If you were given three wishes what would they be?Health and happiness for my family and friends. A big lottery win would solve a lot of issues!Wales to win the rugby and football World Cup in my lifetime.Favourite music? Abba and Elton John.Steak - (how do you like it? Rear / medium / well.) Very well done...with an extra one on top!If you were able to have a meal with any three people in the world, who would you chose and why?Gareth Bale - the golden boy of Welsh football.Mrs Brown (as in Mrs Brown Boys) - for me the funniest man/woman around at the moment.Donald Trump - he seems to be setting the world alight, and if I could build a shed as fast as he can build a wall, we would be laughing!Favourite holiday destination? Tenerife, closely followed by Disney World Florida with the family, but I have gone too old for that now!Places in the world you would like to visit?Niagra Falls and the Grand Canyon - I have always wanted to have a helicopter flight down the canyon!Three items you would take with you if you were going to a dessert? Water, an umbrella (in case of rain) and a comfortable deck chair to enjoy my time!

Proudest moment in your life? The birth of my children...each one was special in many different ways!Proudest moment for your herd? Winning the Fitzhugh Pair in the Royal Welsh Show 2016. Not only the first time Ayrshires have won this for many years, but both animals carried the Willhome prefix and were bred, born, reared, prepared and shown by ourselves. What do you look forward to the most in becoming President?Meeting old and new friends and visiting new areas throughout the country, and not being tied to our cows tails at home!Is there anything you want to achieve as President, if so what?Continue and build on the buzz and excitement around our breed, and promote to others not only what our cows can offer, but the friendships that can be made for existing and new members.

Thanks to Philip for his input into this fact file, I am sure like myself, everyone reading this wishes you the best of luck for the next year and please return home after....I will need a holiday by then!

From a breed point of view, our stand exhibit at the Ulster Winter Fair can be said to have been the busiest of the year. So many enquiries and interest in the Ayrshire breed from breeders both North and South of the Irish border. Our work and effort to be there was well worthwhile. The great display of Ayrshires on show certainly helped to generate even more interest on the day.

It was a day to remember for breeders John and Michael Hunter from Ardmore, winning four out of the five breed classes, taking the breed Championship and Reserve, and taking the Junior Champion award.

My Grandfather George Templeton started breeding Ayrshire cattle at Catcraig, Craigie in 1915 with stock from the family Home farm of Willoxton, Mauchline. He farmed there until 1923 then moved to Carnell Home farm, Hurlford. At the age of five years old, my father came home from school to Catcraig and led cow Catcraig Pansy 2 the five mile walk to Carnell. In 1941 the neighbouring farm Pocknave was acquired by my father Robert Templeton, and together with my Grandfather they formed the partnership G & R Templeton, and this is still the trading name seventy six years later. My son Robin and myself farm Pocknave and part of Carnell and have 120 milking cows plus followers.

We believe very few herds have longer than a 100 year history in breeding Ayrshire cattle on the female side. The history we have, has been traced back almost a century, and in the herd today are direct descendants of those original cows. The records on the male side are equally as impressive. In 1917 the bull Howies Grey Daylight was acquired and he had a profound influence on the herd, as he left hard wearing heavy producers of top quality milk. Other bulls used over the period were Carnell Footprint, Auchenbrain Fine Form, Nethercraig Prosperity and Bargower Demonstrator. A daughter of demonstrator achieved the highest lifetime yields of any Ayrshire within the UK producing 217,946 lbs (99 tonnes) in 15 lactations.

We believe very few herds have longer than a 100 year history in breeding

Catcraig Pansy 2

During a ten year period from 1955-1965, 77 animals were exported consisting of 36 females and 41 males to countries such as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Kenya, South America, Germany, USA and Canada. The female line of the Snowdrop like all other great families just keep getting stronger, and in 1961 at the Glasgow Dairy Show, Snowdrop 21 won first prize in the milking trials and fourth on inspection, and then went on to win reserve individual champion. She was homebred by Carnell Fine Art, and out of Snowdrop 17 who was a daughter of Aristocrat’s full sister Snowdrop 10. She bred some really good daughters including the high yielding Snowdrop 30

Carnell Snowdrop 21

by Hiawatha, but it was her daughter Snowdrop 34 VG by Bankend Unity who is responsible for all the Snowdrops in the Carnell herd recent history. Every generation since classification began in the 1960s in this line have been either VG or EX. Snowdrop 34’s granddaughter by Barwheys Keypoint – Snowdrop 65 VG when mated to Wheatrig Lena’s Commander produced Snowdrop 82 EX. Her daughter by Pant Bright Silver, Snowdrop 103 EX, one star brood cow milked nine lactations and was mother to Snowdrop 155 who sold for 3000 gns at the 2002 conference sale. Her sister the Brocklehill Happy Spirit daughter of Snowdrop 119 VG 86 LP 60 3 Star Brood Cow bred her youngest daughter Snowdrop 185 EX 92 (5E) 5 Star Brood Cow who won first prize in the Senior Heifer class at Agriscot, and as a second calver won Champion at the West of Scotland Dairy Show. She has bred seven excellent daughters one of which is Snowdrop 258 EX 92 (3E) which has been flushed for the 2017 conference to Hilltown Oblique (sexed) and West Mossgiel Modern Reality. Snowdrop 258 continues the production of the family with an average of 9,963 kgs of milk @ 4.33% fat and 3.24% protein in four lactations and calved on 24th October 2016, and is projected 10,555 kgs milk @ 4.26% fat and 3.23 protein in this lactation. Carnell Snowdrop 258’s daughter Snowdrop 308 EX90 by Carnell Warrior was Ayrshire Champion of Champions at Craigie Show in 2015. Both these cows have also won the cow family award in the Ayrshire herd’s competition.

Carnell Snowdrop 258 EX 92 (3E)

Carnell Snowdrop 156 EX 94 (7E) 1 Star LP 80 was dam of Carnell Warrior EX 92, stock bull at Pocknave which was also used in the Sandyford, Knowe and High Mark herds. She was also the dam of Carnell Tristan EX 92 a bull on the Cattle Services Young bull proving scheme. A daughter of hers, Snowdrop 234 VG 87 was champion Ayrshire at Ayr Show, and is the dam of current stock bull Carnell Brigadoon EX 94 and Snowdrop 290 VG 88. Snowdrop 156 EX 94 (7E) also won the Genus long life cow competition in 2012 with lifetime yields of 95,272 kgs @ 5.01% fat and 3.82% protein in 10 lactations. Carnell Snowdrop 274 EX 93 (2E) is currently carrying her fifth calf and has produced 12,409 kgs @ 4.47% fat and 3.23% protein on average over four lactations and is currently on the breed heritage watch list. She has a very smart Hilltown Oblique yearling daughter. Another current member of the herd is Carnell Peg 166 EX 94 (4E) who averaged 9,100 kgs milk @ 4.02% fat and 3.34% protein, and has bred two EX 90 and two VG daughters that are also in today’s herd. The Peg family has won the cow family competition twice in the Ayrshire herd’s competition. While researching the historical literature to enable me to put this article together, I discovered a quote written in 1962 from both my father Robert Templeton and my Grandfather George Templeton. Both Robin and I agreed that this quote still rings true today in the way in which our herd is managed. “In the management of the herd over the years, particular attention has been paid to conformation and type, allied to milk production, and only bulls of the highest standard with sound milking pedigrees have been used”.

The Templeton family – George, Jan, Laura, Claire and Rachel are delighted to be part of the 2017 conference. The farm was bought in 1922 by George’s grandfather also George, and at that time it extended to 172 acres and has now been expanded to its current size of 390 acres, with an additional 200 acres rented seasonally from Auchinleck estate next door. As Laura and Claire work full time off the farm and Rachel is at university, George’s right hand man is Malcy Cowan who helps with the day to day running of the farm and organising the team of staff.

The majority of the land is down to silage or grazing with 100 acres of spring barley and 50 acres of winter wheat being grown for their own use. Grazing the cows can be a bit unpredictable, with the 50 to 60 inches of rainfall that they have come to expect. The cows are let out to graze the fields around the steading, but regularly have to be housed due to the adverse weather. When inside, they are fed by a keenan wagon, a TMR once a day, with no in parlour or out of parlour feeders.

The herd was established from a few cows bought from the Sloans of Townhead with the first calf being registered in 1926, and a further 20 being registered the following year. The numbers have grown over the 90 year history, and they now have 129 registered born in 2016. Over the decades there has been many bloodlines used - Lessnessock, Townhead, Cowgrove and Brieryside to name but a few. All the cows were kept pure up until the 1990s, and from then till the present day, a mix of pure, blended and R & W Holstein have been used. It is important not to lose the characteristics of the Ayrshire, so they believe there is a cow somewhere in the middle that fits their system. Numbers in the herd now extend to 300 plus followers and the cows and heifers calve all year round to try and keep a level milk production curve. Heifers are all calving at two years – two years one month old. Current herd average is 8500 litres at 3.95 % bf and 3.30 % protein with a 399 day calving interval. For the last six years they have sold their milk to the Caledonian Cheese Company in Stranraer, so the importance of protein percentage cannot be under estimated for a cheese contract.

For many years they have supported Cattle Services and have used nearly all of the young bulls that have been offered. Once they have gained a proof, they will use them again. The future of the breed depends on as many as possible being used by all members. AI bulls that they have used recently are: - Haresfoot Simply Perfek, West Mossgiel Modern Reality, West Mossgiel Modern Class, Muirston Top Brass, Hunnington Mandella and Ardmore Crown Napier. Natural service sires used are Cuthill Towers Madison and Barr Guardian. Current service sires are Knowe Warrior and Knowe Maestro out of the While Lily family, Brieryside Respect and Ronaldo out of Barr Retrospective and Mair’s Air Alex out of Chatter Susan by Nexus Dreamer. Young bulls currently being reared are Knowe Norman out of While Lily 503 by Ravenhill Stormin Norman, Knowe Silver Respect out of Silver Bell 4 and by Brieryside Respect, and Knowe Beatnik out of Beatrice 7 by Hilltown Oblique.

As well as good sire stacks, the cow families are important with some long established names - While Lily, Brown Kate, Dainty Lass and Butter Girl are all very prolific in the herd. More recent family names are Irnolas from Bankend, Silver Bells from Humeston and Beatrice from Jan’s Dad’s Strandhead sale in 1997. They currently have a five generations of Beatrices with Beatrice 7 being a granddaughter and a grandmother.

Showing cows is their shop window and they usually attend their local shows - Ochiltree, Catrine and Ayr at the start of the year, then the Royal Highland and Agriscot being the goal to aim for. Their most recent success was with Beatrice 7 in the R & W section at the Royal Highland in 2016. Over the years they have had various successes at these five events with some surprises and some disappointments, but made many friends and had a lot of fun.

As a past President to the Society and a director of Cattle Services for 10 years, George has had a tremendous amount of pleasure, friendship and fun all through the Ayrshire cow. Dairy farming is a way of life, sometimes it’s up, sometimes it’s down, but it’s what they do and they hope to continue to enjoy the challenges that lie ahead for many years to come.

The Templeton family of Johnnie, Margaret and Robin are delighted to welcome you to the 2017 conference in the heart of Ayrshire to view their Carnell herd.

The herd currently resides at Pocknave (neighbouring farm to Carnell) and has done since 1943. It is run as a family farm with relief staff and contractors brought in when necessary. Pocknave is 320 feet above sea level and is 190 acres currently all down to grass with a further 40-50 acres of summer grazing. The 120 cows herd consists of 24 excellent, 42 very good and 30 good plus. They generally milk 100 cows calving all year round as the family supply Graham’s dairies with a level milk supply profile being required to maximise payment.

Cows are strip grazed ideally from early May to September when possible, however, the last few years have been very challenging and last year their cows were at grass for a total of eight weeks and have been fully housed since 31st July.

The cows are cubicle housed and are fed on a semi TMR ration of maintenance, plus 23L, then fed cake to yield through in/out parlour feeders. Current ration for winter 2016 into early 2017 has been silage, brewer’s grains, molasses and blend. During summer months a TMR buffer is offered to maintain some stability, because of variable weather and grass quality. Currently the herd average is 8,579 kgs @ 4.19% fat and 3.25% protein with a calving index of 398 days. All dairy heifers are kept as replacements and reared at home being calved in at an average age of two and a half years, with surplus heifers being sold throughout the

36

year. In addition beef calves are sold to local markets at 6-10 weeks old.The top end of the herd are served with sexed semen, the bottom with Belgian Blue, and conventional bulls are used across the middle. At present the herd has two stock bulls, namely CARNELL BRIGADOON EX 94 and CUTHILL TOWERS RICH DREAM VG 87 used for serving heifers and cows at grass.

Current AI sires being used are Hilltown Oblique (Sexed), Sandyford Supreme (Sexed), Cuthill Towers Harry P, Cuthill Towers Elpaso, West Mossgiel Modern Reality, Hunnington Mandella, Haresfoot Simply Perfek and Carnell Tristan.

In recent years attending some of the larger shows has not been possible, however, they always try to support local shows, and in particular the annual Ayr County herds competition which they have had regular success in.

They would like to thank their sponsors - Mole Valley, John C Ferguson, John Barnes Nutrition and Graham’s dairies for their support. The Templeton family look forward to welcoming you to Pocknave to view and celebrate over 100 years of Carnell breeding on the 16th May 2017.

The Rennie family welcome all delegates to Brocklehill Farm to view their herd on Wednesday 17th May 2017.

The Rennie family have been at Brocklehill for 56 years since moving from Pant Farm in 1961. The Pant prefix was where their success began and was carried on until they changed it to Brocklehill in 1980.

Currently today the herd consists of 220 cows made up of 30/40 pure Ayrshires, 120 blended Ayrshires, and the remainder being Red & White and Black & White Holsteins.

Brocklehill Farm is a unit of 270 acres all grass, with approximately 40 acres rented for young stock and dry cows.

In 2014 they made big changes to the system and layout of the farm by building two new 40 x 180 feet silage pits, and taking away the self feed system which they depended on for almost 50 years. The shed for the cows was revamped inside by digging out a 10 foot slurry pit, and a 30 foot extension uping the cubicles and space for the cows. The new design was also set up for cow comfort and cow movement in mind, by making long and wide passages and installing a Fan Separater to make green bedding from the slurry of the cows. All of their nutritional work is now done with advanced nutrition, and the cows are fed by TMR at the feed passage with additional cake added in the parlour to feed to yield. Ayrshires current herd average is 8860 kgs, 4.50% bf and

3.40% p. Cows will calve all year round with slightly more calving in the spring to suit going out to grazing, and their milk is currently being sold to Caledonian Cheese Company based in Stranraer, Scotland.

They are very much a family run unit with Keith, Irene and Shaun taking to do with the roles around the farm, and Aileen and Lisa providing a helping hand when needed. Their calves are reared on whole milk fed twice a day starting at two litres, and then building up to three and half at peek, and then back down to two, and coming off at eight weeks old. They find this a very effective and great way to give them the best start possible. Calves then move on to a calf rearing nut and straw until around six months old. Older heifers and in-calf heifers are fed a basic silage ration until they calve.

Their breeding programme is focused on breeding long lasting cows with good type and milk. All pure Ayrshires are bred back to Ayrshires every time to keep the pures going strong. Blended cows could be bred to whatever bull they think suits her, and this could be a pure, blended or red bull whichever fits her traits best. Current bulls being used are Gentleman, Viking, Kestral, Preditor, Triclo, Lucky Charm and for the reds - Absolute, Awesome or maybe a red carrier.

Their main families breeding and working well right now are Ena, Waterflower, Penny, Madonna and Quadrille lines, and you can look out for these on your visit.

The Rennie family hope that you enjoy your stay in Ayrshire and look forward to showing you around the Brocklehill herd.

The McHarg family of Martin, Lesley and Paul would like to welcome

the Conference delegates to Crofthead Farm in May to view their

Croftside herd.

Martin, Lesley and family have worked in partnership with Martin’s

late father William and mother Jean who purchased the home of the

Croftside herd in 1953, building the herd up over the years to the present

day of 110 cows with 140 followers. The farm sits at 600ft and extends

to 120 acres with 100 acres rented for grazing and silage. In the winter

months, cows are fed grass silage, draff and a 19% protein cake through

the parlour, and in the summer they graze from May with a top up of

round bale silage if required and cake through the parlour. If weather

permits, the cows are strip grazed over pastures until a first cut of silage

is cleared. Cows have then more acreage to cover as fewer fields are

kept for second cut. All first cut is put in a silage pit and sealed with all

second cut made into round bale silage, and this is fed to the young

stock in the winter months.

The Ayrshire cow suits the climate and landscape of Crofthead very

well, and continues to produce premium quality milk for their purchaser

Lactalis, with a current 12 month rolling average of 4.36% butterfat and

3.46% protein.

All herd replacements are homebred, with most cows being served at

present to their homebred bull - Croftside Alibaba who is 75% Ayrshire,

sired by Croftside Emerald King ET and is out of Croftsde Lady Alice

56. The Lady Alice family were winning shows 20 years ago, when as a

heifer, Croftside Lady Alice 12 out of West Mossgiel Just the Job took

championship honours at Ochiltree Show. Paul and Martin both enjoy

showing and supporting local shows. They hope that by using this family,

they continue to breed a milky, stylish cow with good legs and udder,

and which will go on to win them more trophies.

At the Muirston dispersal sale two cows were purchased, namely

Muirston Joanna 17 and Muirston Carol 48 who both produced bulls

that have been used on the herd, with three cows out of Croftside Jonah

winning the progeny group at the recent herd’s competition in November

2016. Croftside Calico sired by Croftside Cavalier, and out of Lady Ann

from the Lady Alice family is presently with heifers which should calve in

the Autumn.

Last year’s heifers are bred from Croftside Emerald King ET, an embryo

out of Haresfoot Pamela 5. The current aim is to continue to breed from

good lines of stock to produce cows with good quality milk production

and the familiar traits of the Ayrshire cow.

They hope you have a lovely time with them at this year’s Ayrshire Cattle

Conference and look forward to welcoming you to view their herd.

The Logan family are pleased to welcome Conference delegates to view

their Holehouse herd.

Holehouse has been in the Logan family for five generations with pedigree

Ayrshires since at least the 1930s. It extends to some 4000 acres of

hill land, 250 acres upland and 750 arable at 370’ to 1670’ above sea

level with an annual rainfall at the steading of 80 inches. As well as the

250 milking cows, there are 350 dairy young stock, 180 mainly Limousin

cross suckler cows and 1750 Scottish Blackface ewes.

In the earlier years, bulls from the Gree herd were mainly used, then bulls

from Pant/ Brocklehill herds were used extensively. In more recent years,

the herd has had a mixture of pure Ayrshire, blended and Red and White

genetics, hopefully something to suit everybody!

Currently their in-calf heifers are sired by -

Sandyford Lucky Charm, Kamouraska Rockstar and Holmland Red.

Maiden heifers are sires by -

Tiger-Lily Ladd P Red, Riverdane Artist Red, Vetech Security Red, PG

Superpoll, Jenniton Aikman Rory Red and Ri-Val-Re Rager Red.

Their service sires include -

Rager Red, Coyne-Farms Sympati Pat Red, Cogent District Red,

Haresfoot Simply Perfek and Palmyra Smptco Manny, along with current

stock bull Wolfa Autumn Red.

In 2014 the cows moved into a new dairy unit which was built with

deep bedded cubicles and a 20:40 rapid exit parlour to house the cows

all year round with cow comfort a priority. This has allowed them to

fulfil their genetic potential and has meant that the weather is no longer

an issue.

Dry cows and young stock are currently still grazed during the summer.

The new facility has greatly improved cow comfort and health, with cow

performance exceeding expectations with the rolling 305 day average

sitting at 10159 kgs milk at 4.05% bf and 3.35% protein with a 399

day calving interval. The cows are fed a TMR of grass silage, purchased

blend and brewers grains, and topped up with out of parlour feeders.

The Logan family look forward to welcoming conference delegates to

show them the type of cow that they are breeding to suit their system,

and they hope that everyone sees some cows to suit them too!

The Slater Cub was hosted by Steve Oultram in July and was won by a team from the NW Club.

We had an interesting club visit in October to the All Breeds Calf Show at Malvern, followed by a visit to Martin Park’s Highway herd, and we thank Martin and Jane for the hospitality. Ian Patrick also kindly hosted a club judging night.

Our thanks must go to Stuart Hassell for standing in at late notice to judge our herds competition, and the results were revealed at our presentation dinner at The Golden Pheasant in Knutsford.Adult Stock - 1-J Bostock, 2-S Bailey, 3-S OultramAdult Stock Inspection Only - 1-S Bailey, 2-J Bostock, 3-S OultramProgeny Group - 1-S Bailey (Brieryside Lucky Swiss)Two Females By The Same Sire - 1- S Bailey (Mosside Northern Star), 2-M Aidley (Attwells Myrtle Boy )Lifetime Yield Of Fat & Protein - 1-S Oultram (Stamford Miss Norma 28)Cell Count - 1-S Bailey Dam And Her Daughters - 1-S Oultram (Shy Girl Family), 2-J Bostock (Lilly Family), 3-M Aidley (Sailor Girl Family)Best Cow - 1-S Bailey (Beeline Star Crummie), 2-M Aidley (Pagewood Topspeed Bessie), 3-S Oultram (Stamford Miss Norma 50)Young Stock - 1-S Bailey, 2-M Aidley, 3-A CouttsBest Heifer 1-S Bailey (Beeline Swiss Pansy) , 2-J Bostock (Knutsford Polly), 3-M Aidley (Pagewood Fiction Buttons)Scar Shield - I Patrick

We will be celebrating 70 years of the Cheshire Club this year.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our club President Ray Burt who died on 27th December 2016. Ray has been an active member of our club since he moved to Nantwich in 1978, and his Leventhorpe herd was very successful at local shows and herds competitions. They were also placed a number of times at the Bank of Scotland costings competition. His cow Leventhorpe Pimple 51 made 4100 gns at their dispersal sale. He will be sadly missed by all our members.

DEVONThe Devon Club Herds Competition was run in September, and Geraint Thomas travelled down from Wales to judge it. After a busy couple of days taking Geraint from farm to farm, the length and breadth of Devon, we held an evening barbeque, kindly hosted by Mark Evans at Blannicombe, so we could all have a leisurely chat with Geraint before he headed back home.

The annual meal and competition results was held in early December at the Gypsy Hill Hotel, Exeter, where Geraint joined us again with Sheryl and

NORTH EASTThe North East recently held their AGM at Forth Milestone Farm by kind invitation of James and Nicola Waterhouse, a new president to take over from Mr Jimmy Fitton who has just served three years. I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Joan Myers has taken up the honorary position. Ian Hutchinson stands on as Chairman, with James Waterhouse as vice chairman, Steph Myers as Secretary assisted by Nicola Waterhouse with the treasurary duties.

Last year we had two judging Sunday afternoons, the first one was on the 28th August held by the Cranshaw Family, Brindle, and the second one was on the 6th November courtesy of the Patrick Family, Bolton. We would like to thank these families for hosting these event, and we must thank all members who attended.

We have to thank the members who showed their cattle at the local shows, as without them there would be no Ayrshire classes. So congratulations must go to Bobby Cranshaw, Ian Patrick, James Seedall, Andy Rimmer, Richard Moore, John Watson, Bill Bruce and Martin Wall.

On the 29th and 30th July we had our herds competition, and we would like to thank Chris Adams for judging the competition, and we hope he had an enjoyable two days in Lancashire. Thanks must also go to David and Helen Morris for the accomodation and to John Barton and Bobby Cranshaw for taking Chris around the farms.

On the 15th November we held our member’s night at the Salmesbury Hotel, where we had thirty seven members and friends in attendance.

We have sadly lost two of our lady members - Janet Jones and Barbara Cranshaw. Our deepest condolences go to the David and family and also to Peter and family.

On the 29th November we held our AGM where Bill Bruce took over as Chairman, and President is Martin Wall, Vice President is James Seedall, and Secretary as Margaret Gregson.

WIGTOWNSHIRE

ULSTERIt is lovely to see snowdrops and daffodils appearing and heralding the onset of spring, and I will be delighted to welcome the longer days.

It seems such a long time since we had our annual dinner and prize giving in the Adair Arms Hotel, Ballymena back in November. We were delighted to welcome Gilmour and Caroline Lawrie as our special guests and Gilmour entertained us all with his speech, while Caroline graciously gave out the various awards and trophies. We had a delicious meal and a few bottles of wine, and enjoyed the music and dancing after the formalities of the evening.

At the beginning of December, we had a club meeting and we were delighted to welcome Philip Abernethy, Partner of Parklands Veterinary Clinic, Cookstown. Philip and his team are specialising in IVF and Embryo transfer in cattle, and his talk complete with power point presentation was very well received and thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

Our next major event was the RUAS Winter Fair, held at Balmoral Park, Lisburn. This was as usual well attended and competition was fierce. A full report appears in the journal, but I have to mention the well earned success of the Hunter family, who had a clean sweep winning four out of the five classes and being crowned Champion, Reserve Champion and Honourable Mention with Sandyford Honest Blizzard, Ardmore Janet 110 respectively filling the top two honours. Their success was a great credit to their hard work and dedication, and will surely be hard to surpass!!

We are now preparing for the Young Breeders visit to Northern Ireland at Easter and thoroughly looking forward to welcoming them all to our club.

Well a lot seems to have happened in the last few months. October was our Annual Herds Competition and AGM and the results were as follows:Herd Competition Results - Youngstock- (Judge - Debbie Christophers) - 1-A C & D C Walters, 2-R & A Cornish, 3-M EvansHerd Competition (Judge - Courtney Walters) Best Heifer - 1-Gadles Napier Sade (Ardmore Crown Napier), 2-Rosehill Thorn Pamela (Rosehill), 3-Butterbesley Sarah (Butterbesley)Best Cow - 1-Perdi Bouquet (Rosehill Ayrshires), 2-Devas Tingle (Devas Ayrshires), 3-Coombe Perfek Peach (Coombe Ayrshires)BarryColtonMemorialCup(Bestfamilygroupover75%Ayr.)- 1-Devas (Roskilly Family), 2-East Church (M Evans), 3-Golden (Martin Family)Best Herd - 1-Devas, 2-East Church, 3-Rosehill (Christophers Family)Well done to everyone!

December saw our annual Christmas meal at The Fingle Bridge Inn, Devon, which is always a favourite to get the festive season underway. We have been visiting this pub in memory of Barry Colton for many years. Barry was a keen Ayrshire Breeder, local auctioneer and subsequently landlord of The Fingle Bridge until his passing, and his family still run the pub. The trophy in the herds competition for Best Family Group over 75% is presented in his memory.

Our first event of the New Year was our Photographic Evening held at The Wilsey Down Hotel, with probably one of the biggest entries to date which took some sorting out. Categories ranged from the heifer and cow classes, to the ‘funny’ and ‘any other’ which had us all laughing. A buffet tea was followed by a talk from Colin Christophers about his visit to the USA and Madison which everyone found interesting and informative. Thank you Colin.

Up and coming events will include the annual Young Breeder’s Training Day at Arthur and Debbie Walters closely followed by the start of the show season.
